Game 70 2018-19: Devils at Oilers

The Mickey Mouse game was November 19, 1983. In a rare moment of controversy, 99 said “well, it’s time they got their act together. They’re ruining the whole league. They had better stop running a Mickey Mouse organization and put somebody on the ice.”

The game that inspired the quote earned it. Gretzky took a penalty early, and the Devils scored, then scored again. That was followed by four first-period goals by Edmonton, Wayne 1-1=2 in the first 20. The captain had a goal and two assists in the second, Edmonton outscoring the home team 4-1.

In the final frame, it was 5-1 Edmonton, a period that included Jari Kurri’s third, fourth and fifth goals of the game. Final tally: Gretzky (3-5-8, first of his career), Kurri (5-1-6) led Edmonton to a 13-4 victory. Ron Low, former Oiler (and perhaps the reason for the outburst), got caved (stopped 14 of 22) and Chico Resch (stopped 10 of 15) got the same treatment. A fascinating piece of hockey history.

THE ATHLETIC!

The Athletic Edmonton features a fabulous cluster of stories (some linked below, some on the site). Great perspective from a ridiculous group of writers and analysts. Proud to be part of the group. Outstanding offer is here.

  • Lowetide: How the emergence of William Lagesson in Bakersfield complicates Edmonton’s 2019-20 depth chart.
  • Jonathan Willis: The Oilers aren’t good, but this group has more potential than teams from the decade of darkness
  • Lowetide: Bob Nicholson’s search continues for the Oilers new tomorrow, but at a leisurely pace.

OILERS AFTER 70

  • Oilers in 2015: 27-36-7, 61 points; goal differential -32
  • Oilers in 2016: 37-24-9, 103 points; goal differential +19
  • Oilers in 2017: 30-35-5, 65 points; goal differential -37
  • Oilers in 2018: 31-31-7, 69 points; goal differential -20

If the Oilers win by two or more goals tonight, the team will have cut its goal differential in half season over season. Small victories are big steps. Note: I exclude EN goals.

OILERS IN MARCH

  • Oilers in March 2016: 4-2-0, seven points; goal differential +1
  • Oilers in March 2017: 3-2-1, seven points; goal differential +7
  • Oilers in March 2018: 3-3-0, four points; goal differential -1
  • Oilers in March 2019: 4-1-0, eight points; goal differential +6

WHAT TO EXPECT IN MARCH

  • On the road to: Columbus, Buffalo (Expected 0-1-1) (Actual 2-0-0)
  • At home to: Vancouver, Toronto, NY Rangers, NJD (Expected 2-1-1) (Actual 2-1-0)
  • On the road to: Arizona, Vegas, St. Louis (Expected: 0-2-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: Columbus, Ottawa, Los Angeles, Dallas, Anaheim (Expected: 3-1-1) (Actual)
  • Overall expected result: 5-5-4, 14 points in 14 games
  • Current results: 4-1-0, eight points in five games

NOTES

  • Oilers missed on the first group of college free agents, but there’ll be a bunch along shortly. Luke Philp, righty center with the Alberta Golden Bears, may not be headed Edmonton’s way.
  • In his last 10 games with the Guelph Storm, Dmitri Samorukov is 5-11-16.
  • In his last 10 games with the London Knights, Evan Bouchard is 4-7-11.
  • In his last 10 games with the Niagara IceDogs, Kirill Maksimov is 8-4-12.
  • In his last 10 games with the Saginaw Spirit, Ryan McLeod is 2-6-8.
  • Harvard should get into the playoffs (plus Cornell and Providence) so John Marino’s season is ongoing. He’s a junior, so can return for a final year. However, he may want to turn pro, but will it be with Edmonton?

SAMWISE

Early days and the numbers are going to vary wildly, but we can have a peak at usage. Hitch has Sam playing AT center in some games, and he also deployed him as a winger with Nuge, Leon, McDavid and Cave. Jack of all parades. I wonder if the new GM will see him as a useful piece for next season? He’s done well.

EVEN STRENGTH 5-ON-5 PER 60 (F)

Edmonton scores a lot of goals at even strength outside 5-on-5 situations. For instance, Connor McDavid’s 2.75 per 60 at 5-on-5 sees about half a goal added to his total when looking even strength. Here’s the complete list.

  1. Connor McDavid 3.29
  2. Leon Draisaitl 2.89
  3. Josh Currie 2.30
  4. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.89
  5. Sam Gagner 1.89
  6. Zack Kassian 1.44
  7. Jujhar Khaira 1.37
  8. Ty Rattie 1.29
  9. Alex Chiasson 1.24
  10. Milan Lucic 0.98
  11. Tobias Rieder 0.89
  12. Kyle Brodziak 0.67
  13. Colby Cave 0.59
  14. Brad Malone 0.00

I think the Oilers will run 97, 29, 93 and 89 next year, not sure if Gagner gets top-six minutes on the regular. Kailer Yamamoto will get a look, Jesse Puljujarvi (or possibly his return) will certainly be in the mix and I do wonder about Tyler Benson (possibly later in 2019-20). I think Gagner makes it to the fall.

Should have pulled Koski when he was shaky in first

To be fair, the Oilers are a terrible team. He gets ridiculously bad defending.

He does, but he was very shaky in first and you could tell goals were coming

  3. Réal Goudenyéu says:

How’s that goal on mikko? Went thru like 8 guys and right off the inside of the post.

The team has zero energy right now. They are getting beat to pucks all period.

The goalie is not the problem.

  4. hunter1909 says:

According to ESPN Oilers goalie had to make 3 point blank saves between 5:06 and 5:16 – he can’t stop everything.

I missed the first period. I only saw the first 5 minutes of the 2nd right up to the score when I was typing how good he was looking.

Oilers have always been a heartless, gutless team under the Lowe+MacT watch.

    LT / Everyone

I’ve attempted to resolve this missing post issue with Godaddy, but their Managed WordPress system is not meant to deal with small wrinkles. It’s a one size fits all system, and their support have been useless. From everything I have gathered, this is a caching issue, and other than manually releasing the cache every day, the cache settings are set in stone.

So, with LT’s approval, my solution to the community, would be setting LT up on a better hosting platform. I use Siteground and will vouch for their and impeccable support.Suggestions welcomed.

    1) someone start a gofundme annually to purchase a years hosting for LT each year as a ‘thank you’
    2) Siteground allows a 3-year purchase up front at $5.95 per month, it increases to 19.95 per month afterwards though… so its better to buy 3 years upfront. ($214USD)
    3) whoever handled the gofundme would purchase the 3 years of hosting, and send me the credentials
    4) I would finally be able to get a transfer of LT’s database (its huge) and that would allow me to install a new responsive mobile friendly blog design. Which has been impossible under Godaddy.

**** Again this is all based on LT being interested, and trust in us that three years from now he won’t get stuck paying $19.95USD per month compared to what he’s paying now because we don’t like quirky websites.

Doesn’t LT get more than 25K visits per month?

Do you manage this site for LT?

He had a full view of that the entire way, didn’t seem like a screen was an issue – well placed but that’s a saveable puck.

He botched the rebound on the first goal.

He’s given the puck away trying to play it.

    He’s given large rebounds.

He simply has not looked comfortable at all tonight.

Boys are having trouble getting any clean air (except the 15 minutes they dominated) but Koskinen hasn’t been solid tonight, not at all.

He’s not THE problem tonight but he’s one of the them.

  9. hunter1909 says:

How the fuck can pro athletes paid millions not have the basic professionalism to show up for the games?

  10. Lowetide says:

Third NJD goal was deflected, I don’t think that’s on the goalie.

  11. emonkee says:

    hunter1909,

Second goal nothing mikko can do, could have been another goal just prior to penalty coz larrsson left his man open. Maybe i saw it wrong, in the pk, rieder was at the wall but couldnt get the puck out, puck went from one side to another, kassian force to move up and severson stepped in and score, sure mikko isnt play like he has been but the team in front of him is pretty bad tonight

  12. hunter1909 says:

Being a fan of the Oilers at this point feels like now I understand what it feels like to be an Anvil fan.

  13. giddy says:

    Slump busters again, lol.

  14. OriginalPouzar says:

A third goal Koskinen could have/should have stopped.

That’s just a really bad goal.

  15. Lowetide says:

    Now THAT’S a poor goal..

  16. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Ok that one’s on mikko

  17. Gerta Rauss says:

awright, lets see that Stolarz fellow…

  18. hunter1909 says:

Oh my 4-2 and NJ are all smiles.

Way to go Lowe+MacT you sure know a lot about(the opposition) winning.

  19. ArmchairGM says:

    Anyone still believe in playoffs?

  20. OriginalPouzar says:

Lots of time to come back if Stolarz can shut the door.

  21. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    ArmchairGM:
    Anyone still believe in playoffs?

    Can’t lose this game.

  22. emonkee says:

The sequence before the 4th goal, rieder and cave (i think) went to the same devils player who passed pack to Quen to score, mikko could have had that but why is Quen left wide open in the first place? Cave and Rieder’s fault imo

  23. OriginalPouzar says:

Gulls with a late PP goal in the 2nd to tie the game up.

2 for 2 on the PP – PK letting the Condors down just like the Oilers.

  24. Gerta Rauss says:

Well, there’s lots of time left, and the Oilers should be motivated

    They better be

  25. leadfarmer says:

    I Don’t get coaches.
You know your goalie is not on his game, so why not pull him before he costs you the game. After multiple miscues in first no one is shocked Mikko gave up 4

  26. OmJo says:

Were the Oilers at the end of the shift there or skating in quicksand?

  27. texmex says:

Draft lottery is April 9th. Oilers playoffs start a day sooner than the real ones.

  28. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Gerta Rauss:
Well, there’s lots of time left, and the Oilers should be motivated

    They better be

I think chaisson said in his intermission interview that the team needed to get their feet moving…. They haven’t.

  29. OmJo says:

    I blame Hunter

  30. hunter1909 says:

To protest these sad sack of shite losers, I’m going to go and do something positive.

  31. Oil2Oilers says:

So is Dylan Cozens NHL ready?

(Note: I don’t think any of the draft class is NHL ready, this is a comment on the truly tedious hockey game)

  32. Dicky94 says:

    ArmchairGM,

Yes. A come back in this game first.

  33. McSorley33 says:

In fairness, this New Jersey lineup is a powerhouse.

    Rooney
    White
    Pietila
    Santini

We’re just lucky to be in the game.

  34. OriginalPouzar says:

and a weak one on Stolarz……

  35. Gerta Rauss says:

    lol

  36. ArmchairGM says:

Réal Goudenyéu: Can’t lose this game.

    Really?

  37. OriginalPouzar says:

Man, Larsson has had a tough game tonight – maybe the worst I’ve ever seen him play.

  38. giddy says:

That young fellow wearing the Devils jersey “dabbing” in the crowd after that goal is a great representation of what the Devils are doing to the Oil right now. Tough.

  39. Ice Sage says:

    Damn.
Time to get to spring chores!

  40. Réal Goudenyéu says:

The oilers were leading this game 2-1

  41. ArmchairGM says:

    ArmchairGM,

Yes. A come back in this game first.

    Poor timing with that comment.

  42. OmJo says:

If the Oilers do make the playoffs, McDavid and Draisaitl won’t have much left in the tank.

  43. jake70 says:

    This is quite disappointing.

  44. silasbengtsson says:

Classic Oilers 😅 How anyone can think any game is a should win with this team is beyond me.

    17 playoff games 😂

  45. delooper says:

I’m sorry guys. I hadn’t been watching Oilers games for a few months now. Tonight is the first game I watched from the start, probably all season. Oi, I should go back to watching only from the 3rd period on. . .

  46. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Well guys… at this point I’m cheering for losses, and for all other teams to win. I will (again) be cheering for SJ to get their first cup.

    Go Sharks Go!

  47. OmJo says:

    That was a fucking dive…

  48. innercitysmytty says:

This game has zero to do with the overall talent level of the team. Pure and utter lack of give a shit against a team that played last night and is missing 10 regulars including all their best offensive players. We have significantly more talent and depth than that team. Terrible.

  49. Fiveinatrailer says:

    OmJo,

He’s not even the GM yet!

  50. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    Shots 15-6 in the second.

  51. Lowetide says:

    Benning scored.

  52. jake70 says:

big goal, we’ll see how this evolves….

  53. Lowetide says:

Connor McDavid: Ahead by a century.

  54. OmJo says:

Matt Benning is not the defenceman you try to get rid of this summer.

  55. giddy says:

Benning’s goal made the game interesting. Hitch is riding McDavid and Drai hard right now. I hope they have energy for the 3rd.

  56. OmJo says:

With how injured the Devils are, playing a back to back after getting their asses handed to them in Calgary… this game shouldn’t be this close.

  57. giddy says:

Oh, and the threepeat on the triple digit seasons is decent.

*Ryan Whitney voice* Not a big deeeeal

We can compare them to the greatest team of all time the Montreal Canadiens who instilled right from the first day to the rookies the importance of winning.

These pampered assholes just turn up hungover for work, pretend to listen to the white haired old man coach who they know won’t be around for long anyway, then deal with the media that the cleverer ones know are no more than shills for the Lowe+MacT influenced “management”.

The main downside for the players is that the Lowe+MacT “management” has a secret hate-on for skilled players who remind them of the Gretzky/Messier/Coffey/Anderson/Kurri/Simpson types. Pathological sports management, in effect.

  59. Réal Goudenyéu says:

    OmJo:

    Right. Nurse is.

    *Hides*

  60. OmJo says:

That was a nasty elbow. Carelessness by Krieder.

  61. Lowetide says:

    After Two:

5-3 New Jersey (3-1 NJD in the second)
23-21 New Jersey shots (14-8 NJD in the second)
27-27 Corsi for 5-on-5 (15-8 NJD in the second)

This is a terrible game by Edmonton. They don’t deserve to win.

  62. OmJo says:

    Réal Goudenyéu: Right. Nurse is.

    *Hides*

    *throws a tomato*

    Get off the stage!

  63. Zelepukin says:

The fact that you now have to double shift two players to tie a game against an AHL team on a back-to-back where they let in 9 goals, is just, by definition, #becauseOilers.

  64. Réal Goudenyéu says:

It is most noticeable in the defensive zone. They are passive and reactionary and so guess what? Too late. Your on the wrong side of the puck.

  65. giddy says:

    No kidding. Egregious disregard.

  67. OmJo says:

New Jersey is starting a collection of American players.

Stolarz (he’s from New Jersey so he has to have extra value) for Hall? One for one.

  68. OmJo says:

  70. hunter1909 says:

Lowe+MacT probably love how Gagner’s returned a broken man lol

  71. BONE207 says:

Quite the game considering the topic of today’s article.

Prior to the game, Rob Brown predicted 4 points from both CONNOR & Leon. They are going to be busy in the 3rd.

Or 35 years later the table has turned.

  72. OmJo says:

I agree with Remenda (Lord forgive me): Matt Benning is underappreciated.

  73. JimmyV1965 says:

Just wanted to thank you LT for all you do here. I’m sure no one is more frustrated by the glitches than you. Definitely willing to help defray any expenses. Just tell me what to do.

  77. OmJo says:

The Oilers PK is looking decent to start the third. Didn’t give the Devils much ice in their end.

  78. flyfish1168 says:

Oilers not giving up and rolling over. Good to see.

  79. OriginalPouzar says:

Condors give up the go-ahead goal early in the thrid but then a minute later they score two in less than a minute.

    Lagesson from Vesel

    Callahan from Gust and Vesel.

  82. BONE207 says:

    OmJo:
I agree with Remenda (Lord forgive me): Matt Benning is underappreciated.

No forgiveness required. That’s the thing. Everyone has an opinion about the Oilers & they are all correct. Why? Because almost everything about this Disorganization is wrong.

  83. OmJo says:

Why take Kassian off the first line?

  84. OriginalPouzar says:

Condors give up their 3rd PP goal of the game (just as the PP expires) and they are tied again.

  85. giddy says:

    OmJo:
    Much better PP right now.

I never understand how sometimes the PP can be so fluid and beautiful, and other times so rigid and slow. Like keep the boots moving!

  86. hunter1909 says:

Oilers played like shite for the first 2 periods. Now for the third, they just won’t be good enough.

  87. hunter1909 says:

No question about it. Oilers are a pathologically repressed team under the Lowe+MacT watch.

    Goodnight.

  119. Gerta Rauss says:

Well that game was a big, wet, turd

  120. texmex says:

    Réal Goudenyéu,

Agree. Even if they squeaked into the 2nd wild card, they would get destroyed in the first round like NJ did last year.

Sadly, I prefer getting a decent draft pick to use as trade bait or draft BPA.

Missing the POs will hopefully help clear house

    Isn’t it obvious?
    It’s on the OBC/ Katz/ ex GM/ Coach/ Scouts/ Players/ Fans/ Media/ Injuries/ Refs/ Equipment/ that dog across the street/ your 2nd cousin’s grouchy neighbour/ Neuman from Seinfeld/ and that guy in the office who always says “what’s up bro?”

Oh yeah. DEFINITELY the water… they use that same water to make the ice they skate on don’t ya know! which would explain the crappy home record.

    MAJOR OILERS ANNOUNCEMENT:

The Draft is on April 9!

  135. JimmyV1965 says:

Well, it was nice while it lasted. We made it to mid March playing meaningful games. Lots of criticism of the effort level tonight. Not sure that’s why we lost. Although our top three forwards are clearly better than anyone on the Devils, our bottom nine forwards are certainly no better than anyone on their team. We’re definitely a lot slower. If McDavid and Drai aren’t lighting it up, there’s no reason to expect this team to beat anyone in the league. Credit to them for carrying the team this far.

  136. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Hey, remember when we all thought the pacific Division would be the worst division, and the only real proven team was SJ?

    Good times…

  137. Reja says:

    hunter1909:
McDavid+Draisaitl are Charlie Simmer+Marcel Dionne of the 21st century; toiling in obscurity with zero hope of ever winning anything aside from personal awards.

Dionne and Simmer at least had some help up front with Dave Taylor and Butch Goring.

  138. Crazy Pedestrian says:

Hey, ‘Member when the Oilers only needed to play .500 hockey for the rest of the season to be in a playoff spot?

    I ‘member…

  139. JimmyV1965 says:

I still maintain this team is not that far from contending for the playoffs. We have six really nice core pieces and some prospects on the way. The Hawks transformed their team with two stinking trades in season. They were awful until they acquired Strome and Perlini. Dumping Manning for a functional forward was huge as well. The big question of course; are they capable of hiring a good GM?

With Katz playing Malibu-Citizen Kane in LA, perhaps you should be the one telling us what’s going on since being in Mexico you’re closer to the centre of impotence.

Katz’s next production needs to be a little less Citizen Kane and a lot more Narcos.

If the OEG ran like the Cali Cartel, some heads would finally roll.

If the OEG was a drug cartel, they would be snorting what they were selling. The merchandise would be sent by cruise ship with everyone on deck with rolled up Bennies playing musical chairs. They would get lost at sea & wander the ocean for many years looking for a port while crashing on the rocks every spring. Entertainment provided by Cirque du CONNOR.

It’s supposed to be the best and newest ice in the league, but it seems as if this is not the case, and hasn’t been for a while.

I’ve never been West of Ontario even, but apparently the arena contrustion and set up in general is not good, especially for something touted to be next-gen big?

It’s sort if like a septic system. Works & looks great until you fill it with shit.

Rereading my comment makes me sound like Hunter. Sorry…
