The Edmonton Oilers waived Tyler Benson yesterday, we’ll find out if he clears around noon today. Benson was a high second-round pick with plenty of talent still on the board, and much of the talent passed over has found its way to the NHL.
Opinions varied of course, but I think most people hope Benson gets an NHL chance, either on waivers or at some point with the Oilers. Plenty of “waive Josh Archibald and keep Benson” opinion, but that isn’t the job Benson was applying for with the big club. He adjusted his game, but the things he does best haven’t yet seen the clear light of day in the NHL. We have seen hints, and that’s what I’d like to talk about today.

- At home to: MON (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
- On the road to: CAL (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
- At home to: WAS, TBAY, DET, BUF, NJD (Expected 3-1-1) (Actual 3-0-0)

- On the road to: CAL (Expected 0-1-0) Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: ARI, LAK (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 8-5-2, 18 points from 15 games
- Actual March results: 4-2-1, 9 points in 7 games
- Oilers in 2021-22: 33-23-4, 70 points in 60 games
A win tonight puts Edmonton on a trajectory for 97 points, and that should be the magic number or beyond it. Now, there’s many miles to go, but the 10-5-1 run by Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson has been outstanding. I still see the big problem with this team on the roster, but the new coaching staff has done a wonderful job on the five-on-five. Can they fix the special teams? I can’t tell you. It’ll have to come to us. Can this team beat the Sabres? The last time Edmonton beat them at home was January 14, 2019. Milan Lucic and Zack Kassian scored twice.
THE BENSON CASE
I learned so much about team building by watching Whitey Herzog construct the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals. Herzog had special circumstances (his ballpark had an outfield the size of the Pacific Ocean) and he took advantage of that fact by finding outfielders who could run like the wind. You see, Whitey took what was not valued, and put it to use. He found a centerfielder (Willie McGee) in the Yankees system and got him for very little. McGee helped the Cards win the 1982 WS, and take the 1985 and 1987 WS to seven games. McGee never hit 15 home runs in a season, but he won an MVP and was a feared player at the plate, on the base paths and in the field.
The Yankees focused on what McGee couldn’t do, Whitey concerned himself only with the things he could do and how those skills could be applied to the cavernous outfield in St. Louis.
In this story, Benson is McGee (although not the same calibre player) and the Oilers are the Yankees. The things Benson can do well (pass the puck, find seams to send it) are obvious (he had over 50 assists in his first AHL season) but untapped during his NHL time. Benson has two NHL assists, and they’re gorgeous. One is the cover photo and the other is the photo on the front of this blog that rotates through when this article pops up.
I don’t know what Benson would have done with 40 games on a skill line. I think Cooper Marody is the more talented player. As it turns out, both could exit the system during the calendar year 2022 without getting a full shot at an NHL job.
Tyler Benson has played 25 minutes at five-on-five with Connor McDavid in his NHL career. He has a goal. 59 percent expected goals. I think he earned a full shot. For years now, since 2016 really, I’ve read comments from both sides, each in a hurry to be right about Benson’s career story. I’ve never really cared about the ‘being right’ part, because at some level I’d be cheering against someone’s success. I cheer for a full shot, 500 at-bats. Tyler Benson has yet to receive those 500 at-bats, that full opportunity, and if he gets claimed today, that will be my wish for him.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After his impressive rookie season in 2018-19, the Oilers depth chart (May 2019, as Ken Holland arrived) had Leon Draisaitl, Milan Lucic, RFA’s Tobias Rieder and Jujhar Khaira, Benson and Joe Gambardella as options. Holland had much work to do, so in that first summer added pieces like Joakim Nygard, James Neal (for Milan Lucic), Markus Granlund and Tomas Jurco. All of them played ahead of Benson. He would add (at various points) Andreas Athanasiou, Tyler Ennis, Dominik Kahun, Zach Hyman, Warren Foegele, Evander Kane.
For me, there had to be a window in there somewhere. In the offseason, Holland added Hyman and Foegele, plus Kane mid-season, and that’s all she wrote. What do we know today? Benson isn’t going to replace Kane, Hyman, Foegele and with all of the veterans returning Benson is odd man out.
All of this to say Tyler Benson has skill and giving him 40 games (or more) with a reasonable facsimile for a skill center was an option. Good teams don’t waste talent. Edmonton has a fine LW depth chart today, but a value contract who could play with skill would have value next season. Maybe Benson clears and fights another day. Maybe he lands in Seattle. Either way, when the next kid arrives and scores close to a point-per-game at age 20, we’re going to compare his audition with that of Benson. I think the kid didn’t get a fair shake, come what may at noon today.
HOLLAND’S TRADE DEADLINE
Ken Holland traded for Andreas Athanasiou, Tyler Ennis and Mike Green at his first deadline, then Dmitri Kulikov at the 2021 deadline. Elliotte Friedman’s comments in the latest 31 Thoughts suggests a defenseman is likely, a goaltender isn’t coming and there’s a chance at a depth forward.
This runs counter to what Edmonton could use (goalie, shutdown blue). I don’t see a need for another forward, the Oilers have all kinds of depth there when completely healthy. A Tyson Barrie for shutdown defender deal might not be out there, and goalies are hard to find, but James Reimer and Mark Pysyk shouldn’t cost the moon. Dmitri Samorukov isn’t more valuable than a strong playoff run in the McDavid/Draisaitl era. It’s go time. I thought everyone agreed about that last October.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
A busy morning on TSN1260. Chris Johnston, TSN Insider will discuss yesterday’s trade and what the market looks like as we head into trade deadline weekend. We’ll also have Crossfire! (pew! pew!) and talk about NFL free agency. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio at 10 this morning!

Dreger reporting the ask for Lindholm is a first, a third and a prospect.
My goodness, rental prices are high this season (as we’ve seen with Chiarot, Jankrok, etc.).
Its almost heartening that the 2nd and 3rd are tied up in the Keith trade (although 2023 picks are valuable this year).
I mean, I’d like Justin Braun but I don’t want to pay a 2nd rounder to rent the 35 year old. Maybe for a younger/better player like Soucey who also has another year at a decent hit.
Why did it seems that all those years when we were sellers, the deadline market was so low, and now that we can even thing about buying, prices are crazy?
Like the officiating, It’s a global conspiracy against the Oilers!
Lets remember, with Malone assigned to Bakersfield, it leaves the team with only 12 forwards and, after tomorrow afternoon’s game, 11 given Archie can’t travel to Denver. It could be as simple as Marody, coming off a hatty, finally getting a call, as exciting as Holloway getting the call (doubtful) or maybe a precursor to an external add in the next few days.
The latter seems the most likely, no?
Likely but why do it mid-game (and with less than 40 hours to another game) leaving the team with no extra forwards unless something was imminent?
See: Holland, Ken: hapless GM of the Edmonton Oilers.
I would like to see a Marody call up, but I imagine Malone is still with the team? Would they just keep him up North until they travel and “call him up” for the road trip? Just spitballing, didn’t double check my initial assumption.
I don’t think so – technically, once assigned, a player needs to get going promptly.
Not to mention, I think part of this is to get Malone back to his family – he’s got a baby (I’m fairly confident his wife gave birth during the current season).
NEW for The Athletic: Is Oilers winger Warren Foegele doing enough to warrant his contract? I think you’ll be surprised.

Are there any song titles with the words “60 Minute Clinic”?
11-5-1 in 17..over 82..53-24-5.. Pretty promising.
Vegas look to have found their game again. Gonna be a race to the line!
5-3 with an empty netter…1 min remaining
rough night on the out of town scoreboard
Canucks lost though, and that makes for a civil message board at least!
Goalie.I don’t think they can expect Thompson to always out-battle the other guy. Or Broissoit.
Well we didn’t learn anything about Smith tonight – zilch, zero, nada. Looks like the plan is to enter the playoffs with the same goalie tandem. What can go wrong?
I mean… I honestly don’t see any better ideas
Skinner…
Nice 60 minute effort by the Oilers gets them back to 11 games over Bettman .500 for the first time since game 21 when they were 16-5. After their 2-11-2 swoon, it took them 25 games to get back to +11.
Canucks lose. Panthers down 1 early in the 3rd
Big goal by Bennett. 3-2 Vegas
Are we claiming Sekera off waivers..?
I don’t hate the idea
You should hate it.
Has he been that bad..?
Upper body injury and COVID related illness- been on LTIR since late Jan – activated a few days ago.
Yes, and not having a good season before those issues – he’s a shell of the player he was 6-7 years ago.
His numbers have been all over the place this year, largely due to sample size issues is my guess. So hard to say waht you’d be gettting. He might be able to handle 3rd pairing, but it is no given.
http://puckiq.com/woodmoney?season=20212022&positions=d&team=dal&group_by=player_season_team
Thanks for that
3rd pairing/ 7 D was all I was thinking – he was a shadow of 2017 Reggie when he left EDM
I thought he was passable last year and hadn’t heard much since then
My worry would be his skating and I haven’t seen him take any shifts this year so have no idea. Pivots and retrievals, that sort of thing.
I know what you’re thinking though… he can play both sides.
Better to keep the powder dry and wait to see if a RHD shakes loose.
I would prefer the likes of Lagesson and Broberg over Sekera at this point to tell you the truth – and I was a big fan of Reggie back in the day. His body has been battered and he’s past the cliff. I just don’t see the point.
Also, no, he’s never really been able to play both sides – he did so in Edmonton for a good part of one year with a young Nurse and they did not do well.
He lost effectiveness on his off-side before his body broke down on him.
First Flyers give up the tying goal to the Kings in the dying seconds and Kings win, now they are down two to the Knights – good for nothing team.
Almost as bad as the Panthers? 😉
Nice timing on the win streak oilers. Playoff hockey – ruthless and toothless.
Getting some players back in the lineup and not travelling after EVERY GAME (for 14 games) certainly helps….
Giroux didn’t fly out with the team after Philly’s game.
Florida deal apparently
It’s an arms race. They got Chariot too…
I’m eager to hear the high danger chances given up. 1?
It was 24 to 7
Game wasn’t as close as the score looks. If they got a couple bounces it could have been 12-1.
How wide open nets did they miss?
At least 3
So…. we don’t need a goalie?
Side…
Have you let your wife know the Oil hung on? 😉
She witnessed the miracle.
Nurse at 22 minutes, Leon at 19, Connor at 16.
You love to see it.
20-0 when scoring first…
if that’s not an NHL record it’s probably pretty close to it…
2nd team to do it.
Ok. If you ain’t gonna say who it was, then don’t say anything at all.
LAK up 2-0 going in to the 3rd.
VAN down 1-0 to DET nearing the end of the 2nd.
VGN and FLA tied at 1 early in the 2nd.
For me, 100% Mikko starts on Saturday.
Even if Smith has shutout, even if he stole a 1-0 win, I play Mikko on Saturday.
Mikko has been the man over the last 3 weeks and a big part of this team getting back in to a nice playoff position.
Mikko has earned the next start!
What makes you think it wouldn’t be Mikko?
I never stated that I didn’t (although, to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did give Smith the net again), just stating my thoughts.
We’ve gotta get Smitty going
-Ken Holland
and Jay W…..
Yes….but…. NO!!!!!
😀
Seriously though, they’ve gotta start Mikko on Sat. Have to.
And like it or not, the 3 goalies we’re going to use down the stretch are already on the roster(or in Bakersfield)
If Woody sees Koski as his #1, then I can see Jay giving Smith the easier start against the Devs, and then using Koski in both B2Bs… Smith gets the Sharks and then Koski the Flames.
Yeah, OK, I hadn’t looked that far ahead
I was thinking more towards the deadline and just the 1 game remaining prior to
These 3 “winnable” games conclude Saturday and I’d put my best goalie in and make sure that happens
Deadline won’t matter, Ken’s not looking for a goalie.
If the skaters play like they did tonight (and against TBL and oithers), and Smith is truly as healthy as he looks, I don’t think it really should matter who they put in against the Devs. You would epect a win.
The plan could be anythng though… Jay might want to split the B2Bs, he might want Smith to play COL or maybe set him up to play the Flames….who knows.
Whaaa? Really?
So, you think the coach will sit his starter for two straight games and then play him on back to backs…… with respect, I can’t imagine either of those (well, I can see Smith starting on Sat but not if Jay thinks of Mikko as his legit 1 right now) notwithstanding opponent.
Jay is not shy about playing goalies on B2Bs. Those are the two most difficult games. And I don’t think this is what he’ll do, I just think it is one of various options open to him.
He did so quite a bit at the AHL level but its MUCH more common-place at the AHL level generally.
I would be shocked if he doesn’t split the back to backs.
It would be nice to see some pattern to playing these goalies- play three rest three?
Not for me – for now, its Mikko 7 out of 10 (give or take an adjust as schedule requires) unless his play drops from the last few weeks – one game is just one game – Sat will be telling.
With the back to back against Dallas and Colorado I’m not sure it’s a slam dunk Mikko starts Saturday.
might be a better idea to give Smith another easy start, build his confidence for big game against Dallas and give Colorado to Mikko. Let Mikko dance with the best who he’s played very well against.
Smith with the .964. Oiler goalies continue to do their job. Here’s hoping they keep it up.
Wow Oilers easily could have 10 goals tonight!
Shore will be seeing that look in his dreams tonight lol
Barrie…!…first goal since Nov 20??…per Jack Michaels…wow
We’re fattening up that goal dif..!!
Beauty. Great pass by Foegele.
BARRIE!!!
My goodness what a pass by Foegele – that was Drai like.
Boys should score on this, for Connor….
McDavid is leaking again..we may not see him again with such little time left
4 min PP
Not sure we should have seen him with a 4 goal lead and 5 minutes to go.
Good to see the team has the “taking care of business mode” back from earlier in the year. Had been missing for quite some time.
Zach has had such a good game was hoping he would score there.
Hyman is junk on breakaways. Especially when the net is empty…
A new Marchant?
Relentless, like Marchant was. Love how Zach Hyman plays.
I think Hyman has a better chance of scoring while cutting in on a defender from the side boards rather than a clean cut breakaway.
He needs 2 guys hanging off of him… won’t work any other way.
Man Archie is a breath of fresh air. Great boots
And hits everything that moves.
Guys have passed up a few good chances tonight by failing to shoot when in a good position to do so. Jesse and Bouch guilty as well as a few others. I like Kane. He has a “shooters mentality” (DRINK)
You can almost see the emotion in some of those plays. Leon is really turning to get Bison King on the board.
Bouchard seems more assertive tonight.
Low event third period………
Jesse needs to get that shooters mentality back.
Puljujarvi has two settings. In one he plays with the confidence to wheel with the puck and shoot it and he does both quite well. In the second he seems like he feels he has to get rid of the puck the moment it touches his stick and he is frustratingly ineffective.
I think Jesse has looked good tonight after being out. Lots of overpassing generosity from the whole team, to be expected when you are up the whole game
He needs a couple more games to get the rust out
Pujo tried to pass back there. what is he thinking
They need some kind of hypnotherapy or maybe the toothpicks in the eyelids ala A Clockwork Orange and just show Jesse youtube clips of NHL players shooting the puck
Evander hit that crossbar like he bet the Oilers would win 5-1.
He tried to go bar down … almost had it.
What a pass by McDavid and, with an empty net, Kane lazers one off the bar.
What a Shorethanded goal.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uev2J_cBHjQ
So… Feisty.
Grteat Pk
Hell of a PK, even without taking in to account the beauty shortie.
Shore!!
Shoretie.
Remind me again why some Oilers fans have a problem with Shore?
