I picked the Oilers in seven games, so a 3-1 lead by Edmonton over the Calgary Flames is a surprise even for many of those who believed the underdog could win the series. The Colorado Avalanche reminded all fans about what can happen in a game five last night, or perhaps it was the St. Louis Blues who did the reminding.

TONIGHT
Today, I would just like to talk about the game, the series and what passes into lore. In 25 years, I expect people will remember Connor McDavid’s incredible outscoring, Mike Smith’s goaltending and the McDavid-Draisaitl-Kane trio. After Game Four, maybe Ryan Nugent-Hopkins gets a mention one score and five years from now.
The great thing about a playoff spring is the anticipation of memorable events. It’s like that car song by Neil Young (“Long May You Run”) where he sings “we’ve been through some things together, with trunks of memories still to come” and that’s where we are at this time.
In 1981, it was Andy Moog, he slayed the Montreal Canadiens. In the 1983 series against the Calgary Flames, Mark Messier scored eight goals in five games. In 1984, Grant Fuhr stoned the New York Islanders in Game One of the Final, Kevin McClelland scoring the only goal of the game. Later in that series, in the final game, Jari Kurri and Wayne Gretzky didn’t change when the other skaters from both teams went to the bench. Kurri raced back to the puck (RH side behind Edmonton’s net) and sent a bullet pass to Wayne Gretzky. 99 was standing at the spot where a “Yellow Pages” sign would later find a home. As the Islanders rushed off the bench to catch him, Gretzky raced in alone on Billy Smith and scored an enormous goal for the home team. Edmonton would win the Stanley Cup that night.
Messier with Anderson and Kent Nilsson in 1987, Wayne Gretzky strikes the puck as it flutters and catches Mike Vernon with a ‘touched by God’ shot over the goalies shoulder 1988, Craig Simpson takes a gorgeous behind the back pass from Glen Anderson and scores what would be the winner (against Andy Moog) just before getting hammered in the back from behind by Bob Sweeney in 1990.
Curtis Joseph impossible stop against Joe Nieuwendyk, followed by Doug Weight’s pass to Todd Marchant and his breakaway goal against (gulp) Andy Moog and the Dallas Stars. Ryan Smyth losing a row of teeth from a Pronger shot, then coming back to set up Shawn Horcoff in triple overtime (Ales Hemsky with the second assist). Dwayne Roloson versus Jonathan Cheechoo, Ales Hemsky twice May 1 versus Detroit late in the third period.
Zack Kassian and Connor McDavid, both shorthanded, in a 2-0 shutout by Cam Talbot versus the Sharks. Zack Kassian the only goal on another shutout night in Game 3 of that series against San Jose. David Desharnais from Leon Draisaitl and Andrej Sekera, then Draisiatl’s hatty against the Ducks. We’ll all have to decide what’s memorable from this year, but tonight, on an evening when the series against Calgary could be clinched, the stage is set. Any memories I missed? I know there are. Please let me know!
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260, we preview a massive game this evening. Chris Johnston, TSN Insider, will chat about the remaining series and we’ll chat about the Oilers and Evander Kane’s next contract. Your comments welcome, 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk soon!
In my opinion, the last play of the game was a microcosm of the series.
Gaudreau was cherry picking at the bottom of the screen, which allowed for an easy zone entry for Edmonton. He got back into the play and he had the option to engage Draisaitl along the boards. Instead he chose to cover the point, which gave Draisaitl the time he needed to make a play. He held on to the puck long enough for McDavid to get open, but knowing he had to take a hit in the process.
I’m not a great hockey player, so maybe gaudreau made the correct play there, but, to me, one player is willing to take a hit to make a play and the other chose not to engage. Not true for all players from Calgary, but, overall, I feel like that was indicative of both teams in the series.
Tkachuk was also in picture for that last goal too. Calgary’s stars just didn’t show up in my opinion
Winning the BoA feels just as good this morning!!!
Did the refs call back the goal or is it Toronto/New York that has the final say?
Toronto.
It has been amazing watching a few of our home grown players turn into such positive contributors. I’m thinking mostly of Bouchard, Yamamoto and McCleod, who can all be on the ice together without causing a heart attack. Beautiful.
Given the recent history of Oilers free agent signings and trades, it might be even more amazing that Hyman, Kane and Keith have been such positive. McDavid and Draisaitl finally have the help they need to play together, though I still think they should be separated to start the next series.
That 3rd line played really well in some key minutes last night (notably vs. the ‘best line in hockey TM’).
The Oilers deserved to win this game and the series, so it’s unfortunate that the disallowed goal will be remembered as a decisive moment. I couldn’t believe it got called back, but I guess it doesn’t matter it would have gone in anyway. Now Flames fans will be even more insufferable.
Here’s the thing w/the called back goal. Let’s say the refs did let it stand. Who’s to say the Oilers wouldn’t have tied it up late the way they kept coming back time and time again in this series?
Bottom line. Oilers outplayed the Flames. It’s just that simple.
For me, the moral of the story is, “If the puck is going in, don’t kick it.” I never for a second doubted that it was kicked, I certainly doubted it would be called back though.
Holy crap the thread cracked a G-Note, wow!
Should be expected for the Biggest Win in like 16 years.
Man that was fun. This is so so so much fun!
And to think. They’re just getting started!
Go Oilers!
I feel the need to step out for my boy Leon this morning.
As is his style he waited until everyone was jaw dropping over McDavid and then proceeded to quietly put up one of the most dominant series in NHL history playing on half a leg for the first few games. What a fucking machine! Finely tuned German engineering transplanted to Northern Alberta at its absolute finest.
We have the two best players in hockey right now on our team. Stunning, amazing, beautiful, glorious. Add in a supporting cast that’s just been, wow, (I think Yamo is climbing my list of favorite players, he was a gem this series).
And to think nary a fortnight ago some folks were ready to give up on these fellas…. It happens, we all get frustrated. Man this is fun.
Probably posted already, but that’s the 3rd most points ever in a playoff series:
Middleton 19 (7GP)
Gretzky 18 (6GP)
Draisaitl 17 (5GP)
And I believe the most ever in a BoA series, Gretz previously had 14
Watching the game here in NL so Connor scored about 2am. I woke up every damn neighbor in my bldg and haven’t seen the cat since.
I’m still not sure this is real but thanks to all the 1K posts below I’m starting to believe. Cheers to all here and especially our gracious host. We have all earned this one, let’s enjoy!
Unfortunately, missed most of the game last night. But wow! This team faces adversity during each game but always seems to find a way to bounce back. Call it the McDavid/Draisaitl factor or the Woodcraft factor this team is resilient. My most memorable experiences with team sports has always been on teams that play for each other and the Oilers seem to be one of those teams.
Next round will be tough for sure, but lets hope the Avs/Blues series goes 7!
And a Big Happy Birthday to Ben Stelter today!
Play La Bamba Baby!!!
Is this post #1,000?!
— Almost a thou posts! Now let’s get to a game 7 in other series please!
Beautiful! Feeling good, but tired. These late games are exhausting. The team must be over the moon to be moving on though
Thank you to LT for creating such an incredible community on the interwebs. I rarely (if ever) comment, but read on a daily basis and feel like I’ve gotten to know a lot of really great people just through reading their contributions.
By way of introduction, just want to tell a quick story about my 10-year-old daughter who listened to her dad and is an Oilers fan even though we all now live in Calgary. This is the first year that she’s really into hockey (was kind of a casual fan previously). Last Thursday, the day after game 1, she gets ready for school, comes out and is already wearing blue and orange and oilers stuff. I ask her if she really wants to do this, given that the the other kids – heck, everyone in this city – is going to be insufferable after a game like that. She calmly tells me, “No problem – I’m proud of the Oilers, I’m proud to be an Oiler fan, and I know they’ll win the series!”.
I don’t remember crying when she was born, but man, the air was mighty dusty at that moment…
I saw the called-back goal as a clear kicking motion (and Coleman even implied that this was his intent – even if he didn’t agree that he *kicked* the puck)… but I also didn’t think that there was ANY chance that the refs would call it that way.
Given the number of people who seem to think it was a 50-50 proposition, I’m now wondering if part of the reason that it went the Oilers’ way was the referee clearly getting in the way of the clearing attempt before Calgary’s 4th goal… Essentially, might it have been a make up call for that rather egregious error?
Then again, make up calls don’t usually go in Edmonton’s favour, so is this too far-fetched?
I also felt that Calgary was actually offside for the first goal. Surprised it wasn’t reviewed closer.
I think we beat them with our B game tonight. The Oil didn’t look like they really had their legs going, but slow played the first period as best they could and worked their way into the game.
Connor said too post-game he didn’t feel like he really had it goin on. I thought maybe it was the ice, but not everyone looked like they were skating in sand so must’ve been some legs.
I really liked the Oil’s positioning tonight. I thought it was the best we’ve seen this playoffs. Okay maybe S1G6. For the large part, everyone was where they were supposed to be, covering who they were supposed to be covering. Very little cheating for O tonight. Just didn’t look like we had our usual jump on the counterattack or chasing down loose pucks.
Someone, I think Bling, called Hyman a mucker below. Apt description, but also apt for the entire game. Natural turf, rain and mud, little passing, simple direct plays, push the ball forward slowly but surely till your O-line scores a touchdown, play good D…
I like it that we can win those ugly games now.
Kane was looking super gassed by the first shift, must’ve been an eventful childbirth. That alone could make them all feel a bit slower.
Surprise Surprise Flames Shrill Craig Button crying about the Goal. I love it he took great joy in calling Bouchard a bust a few years ago.
I honestly thought it was a good goal. Seemed to be about 50/50. His job is to have an opinion, so I wouldn’t worry too much.
So many smart people missed on Bouchard. He’ll put up 60 points next year. His level of physical engagement is really up and down, if he can find a way to keep it high he might even be considered for a Norris one day. (Bouchard, not Button. Button has poor lateral movement).
His loyalty is to the Flames who he was once the G.M for. He’s been shitting on the Oilers for years until Holland took over. Button must owe Holland some lunch money going way back.
Bro still works in their scouting dept too I believe
I listen to many of Button’s radio hits and he often gushes over the Oilers.
“Don’t tell me Patrick Maroon is a good hockey player.”
I think most of us here had as a goal for the team this season to win a couple of playoff rounds. Well mission accomplished, and while beating the Falmes no less. From here on out we’re playing with house money – the team is learning to win.
Would you be thinking that if we had Hellebuyck between the pipes.
Dear Pacific division, thanks fer comin out.
Pure elation here. Started the game with Flames fan friend for birthday, but after first period I had to get away from that.
About the goal – I think Coleman was nudged and then decided to use the momentum to go for the loose puck, and in doing so kicked Smith’s pad in the crease and impeded his ability to move laterally. Not sure he would have, but if you look at what McDavid did in game 2 I don’t think Markstrom was getting back to rob Draisaitl on his disallowed goal. So to me, this was goaltender interference. As for the kick, there was one angle that makes it look like he swept it in, but I’m not sure he was truly graceful enough to intend to do that.
But here’s the thing, in game 4, Oilers had a terrible goal against when they were in control in the 3rd, and responded with another goal. Flames could have done the same but didn’t (they were outplayed in the 3rd). As we know, 2-0 comebacks X 2 on the road, overcame disallowed goals, several bad goals against by Smith, and the last 2 games where the whistles were put away and it was open season on McDavid. This team deserved to win the series and no Flames fan should convince us otherwise. Enjoy!
Hyman a true mensch tonight, Drai excellent, lots of contributions from players not named McDavid, and now a McDavid goal to add to LTs list from today. So happy we could also shake the playoff OT record of disappointment as of late.
Time for a breather
I love how within 8 seconds of Conor’s OT goal….Woodcroft had dismounted the bench and nearly sprinted to the redline…..put his hand on his hip and waited for his counterpart to congratulate him….At first it looked to eager, almost like he was gloating….but after reflection I think Woody probably has a massive amount of respect for Sutter and Muller and prioritized his interaction with them.
I had that exact thought lol. He waited forever as well.
Yeah, rookie coach jitters maybe to get there too quickly?
I can’t sleep until 1000 comments. Where the hell is Randle McMurphy when you need him!
Lights out at 10:00 at the old folks home.
Just got back from an amazing, tense, heart rate inducing, all around enjoyable VICTORIOUS experience at the dome! So much fun. The increase in negativity the Flames fans felt towards their own players compared to game 1 was palpable. Their moments of glory, mercifully short lived. Their sphincter tightening when McDavid had or was near the puck, at all, audible.
and the post game. Lingering as long as possible, a post game pub beer. A good number of fellow Smyth jerseys at the bar. And just basking in the dejected resignation of the Flames fans, with little to offer other than “Colorado is gonna…whatever”.
I feel truly lucky to have gotten to witness this handshake line live.
Tomorrow is Collection Day then we’re going to party like it’s 1999.
Oilers break a streak of six straight overtime losses courtesy of the Flames tonight.
Also, it is Ben Stelter’s birthday today.
Hurrah Hurrah for little Ben.
I don’t post much, but this blog has been a daily read (well, often several times per day) since the 2006 run. It was a long time ago, but I think this is where I first learned of the Pronger trade (working late in the lab during my PhD). I watched all the cups, but I was pretty young, and in 2006 this blog and that team meant more to me than every cup win (1990 was close, esp. the comeback against the Jets). This is a special place, all thanks to its creator and host.
The best of us here make us consider and reconsider our views on the game and its players, but also accept when their own views (or math) don’t match the outcome. I hope that continues, but given that this place is filled with the kind of fans whose mind is often preoccupied with all things Oilers, I also hope we all find time to savour the last couple weeks and whatever comes next. It could be another 16 years. The players on this team all have warts (97 excluded perhaps), but more than some of the past rosters they can also make plays, and they have personality and passion. Very much reminds me of the 2006 group, and I haven’t had as much fun watching a team forever. As an example, I honestly can’t stand Mike Smith as a goalie, but watching him succeed while being 100% true to himself (and often in spite of himself) is kind of special. Seeing 97 finally let loose and show true joy on TWO whole occasions is worth the last 7 years of frustration. There’s stories everywhere, let’s enjoy for as long as it lasts.
Then in the summer we can spend weeks complaining about Woodcroft dressing Archibald for no justifiable reason (I know I will) and fretting over Nurse’s ’23 cap hit.
But for now, let’s enjoy. Cheers.
Posts like this are why I’ve also been a daily reader since that amazing run. It’s nice to see that the quality of posters has returned after the earlier dip this season. That quality is partly due to the number of long-timers posting again.
Same here.
Great post. I have always loved Smith and your words are helping me understand why. He is genuine. And he is taking Oiler nation to the WCF and possibly beyond.
Getting ahead of myself but if Mike Smith raises Stanley over his head, the story is absolutely incredible. Even if he doesn’t, like LT said, he’s already Roloson and already an Oiler legend in my books. Persistence, loyalty, effort, humility, patience, perseverance, and of course BATTLE! Be your best self! Oil in 5.
Cheers
Woodcroft: I don’t know if you noticed this, but I flipped Hyman (onto the top line).
JW coyly dunking on the MSM in his reserved way is must see TV!
That man plays exceptional mind games. Repeatedly mentioning how many goals they’s scored on Markstrom (“we hung 6 on their starter” in game 1, “we scored 7” in game 2) then talking about how Smith wasn’t tired because he hadn’t played 63 regular season games plus 10 playoff games (shocker, exactly what markstrom had played) was hilarious. It probably made no difference but it adds to the intrigue.
THANK YOU GARY BETTMAN. WE ARE EVEN AFTER KESLER IN 2017.
Tkatchuk/mouthguard in photo on the winner.
Also enjoyed Tkatchuk doing his best Eberle impression after game 1: good karma for his BS Chirp of Kane asking him if he wants money.
John Gaudreau made the softest playoff OT elimination game play of all time prior to that goal. Truly hideous commitment.
Absolutely no willingness to engage Leon physically
He was just kind of a wallflower there, watching his Cowtown chapter snap shut.
Helped that Koskinen painted his glove red & white and snuck it into Markstrom’s hockey bag…..
Shades of Eberle.
I reject this premise. At a minimum, tonight’s call debatable. Kesler supplies textbook video of an infraction.
But yeah. Thank You Gords 🙂
I felt 90% it would count. I feel like it would have counted in the first 2 months of the season.
Zack Hyman and Leon Draisaitl put this team on their backs in regulation.
Drai with 4 apples in total and could have had more, so many smart passes.
Hyman with 1G+2A, 7 SOG, +4. What a gamer this guy is. This man thrives when the game gets mucky.
It feels like we’re playing with house money now! After some disappointing performances in the past, this has to feel like a huge weight off the team’s shoulders. I don’t think they will be gripping their sticks too tight this next round.
Archibald played 4:17 and was -1. Kassian played 2:48 and was -1.
Lots of love for Woodcroft, but for goodness sake get Holloway in there next round.
They have practice days available now. Definite possibility 😉
Concur!!
Devin Shore, Brad Malone, Dereck Brassard, Brendan Perlini, Colton Sceviour, Seth Griffith, Tyler Benson – lots of NHL choices.
Yeah yeah yeah OP, trying to win games here 🙂
What the hell is MacLean talking about Oil history in Alberta. He should brush up on his province history. Turner Valley In the 20’s Ronnie
Don’t comment much, and I’ll admit I’m three sheets to the wind.Haven’t read the comments as I started the Game way late due to coaching my daughters soccer game so apologies if this has been posted. So happy right now and I just find it funny that Lucic was on the wrong end of the pad grab by Anaheim and that goal called back. Neither should have happened but the latter couldn’t have happened to a more fitting foe!
lets go Oil!
The coolest thing about the supporting cast on this team? You have the best player in the world who was effectively neutralized in regulation, but the league’s second best and guys like Hyman, JP, Yamamoto, McLeod, etc all stepped up.
And when the lights were shining brightest? It was 97 storming the gates.
For all of us waiting for balance and depth all these years, this game was poetry.
Are you worried about the Oilers’ ability to prevent goals? They surrendered 20 over 5 games.
Thing is they scored 25 and win tonight’s game by the series average 5:4.
Talk about outscoring your defensive woes.
I think they knew they could go full on pond hockey against CGY and took advantage.
Why play their (defensive, stultifying) game when you could play to your own strengths?
And whomever is their next opponent will be into run n gun as well (Colorado because they can, Blues because they’re like Calgary and will have no choice)
Am glad for the breather tho, my vasculature and liver need rest.
I dig this take.
The next opponent will warrant greater defensive attention. They will be fine:)
&ct=g
This pic will never get old.
Jay Woodcroft with the (successful) Jedi mind tricks on Markstrom. Also did a great job shuffling the deck tonight and in earlier games. What a coach!
The hockey Gords smiled on our team tonight. Smith let in some stinkers and team started flat and got down by two. Wild second period. Then a gift from the Gords … the puck was likely going to go in by itself … it didn’t need Coleman skate to direct it in. Then the gift from the Gords that keeps on giving … Leon to Connor for the OT winner. WCF! GoOilers!
Leon is going to get pissed tonight on some hard liquor.
It’s Christmas morning and we’re drinking the blood of our enemies!!!!
I thought it was a kick. Thought so immediately. Don’t like the rule but I think they got the call right. I wouldn’t have complained had the goal stood, however. Crazy thing, that would’ve trickled in on its own… Looking at Coleman’s face, I think he knew what he did…
Eat shit Calgree!!!!
Leon with 17 pts in 5 games on 1 leg! Better than Matthews.

What a gutsy performance by Chris Tanev who played with a torn laberum, separated shoulder and had a sprained neck.
Surgery next week.
Great post, OP, feel for the guy. But fuk ’em.
I know it his job….but its just a game…not worth it with all that holy hell.
Kudos to him for toughing it out though.
He must of popped his shoulder back in shortly after the Hyman Goal.
He was obviously hurt. Gutsy. Now he’s got more time to heal over the summer.
Ryan Smyth blocked a shot with his face. Kevin Lowe broken ribs with a wrist injury. The list goes on no guts no glory.
I tore my labrum and separated my shoulder in a rugby game in grade 12. I popped it back in and finished the game.
He’s a tough dude, it is professional hockey and I’ll give him that, but not in the same league as what Leon is playing through, if he indeed has a high ankle sprain +/- back injury.
What was that, the single injury the Calgary Flames endured the entire season?
Also, blah blah blah, Mike Grier.
Every second game.
Gord bless Leon’s chipped tooth, it may be our lucky charm.
To the Oilers players who read this blog:
Congratulations. You are now half way to a Stanley Cup.
Get rested and enjoy watching the Avs/Blues beating each other up.
Speaking as a Body mechanics Expert:
That was a clear kick by the Flame = no goal
LOL CP is basically leading with this “We Wuz Robbled” argument.
Many of them are honorable and are admitting they lost to a better team.
I thought it was a kick in real time, same on replays. That said, i did not expect the league to overturn it. I was happy but surprised.
Coleman basically admitted that he ‘directed’ the puck in with his skate…. by basically kicking it in.
Coleman knew exactly what he was doing like Beiska and Jenn stated.
“My understanding is you can direct the puck as long as you don’t kick at it” hahahahaha
No, that’s accurate.
To call a goal back requires a distinct kicking motion.
For an example, see the disallowed goal tonight. He pushed his leg toward the puck at the last moment. Ergo, no goal.
Blake Coleman: had no idea I hated his guts until this series!
Lowetide asked about some favourite memories from playoff runs past. Well tonight. Tonight is one of those memories.
McDavid’s all time fave goal as of tonight.
LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!! I love this team and this city!!!!!
More than happy to upgrade the 3rd rounder to a 2nd if we can win the west.
“There’s only four teams left. Right now, we’re going to enjoy this, I’m gonna tell you, we are going to enjoy this one… however long the flight is back from Calgary.”

“It wouldn’t surprise me if Holland Fast-tracks resigning Evan Bouchard to this summer on a long term deal” – Bob Stauffer
From now on, may Draisaitl’s name be spoken with the same reverence as our beloved Stan Weir. What a wonderful player!
17 pts in 5 games on 1 leg!!!
One lazy ass leg
Imagine, Tkachuk and Gaudreau (and Mangiapane and Kylington) all having career years in contract years, Treliving giving up a 1st for Toffoli and then signing the average and regressing payer for four years and then the Oilers taking the flames out in 5 in the playoffs.
Didn’t they also trade their second for Jarnkrok.
“Imagine you’re a deer. You’re prancing along. You get thirsty. You spot a little brook. You put your little deer lips down to the cool, clear water. BAM! A f—in’ bullet rips off part of your head! Your brains are laying on the ground in little bloody pieces! Now I ask you: Would you give a f— what kind of pants the son of a b—- who shot you was wearing?!”
—my cousin vinny.
That’s probably how the flames feel right now
Will be interesting. I was expecting Gudreau to be gone once Sutter came on board, but then he has the year he did under him. Can’t see any of these guys taking a discount though.
They’re still a very good team. Needed more saves from their Vezina candidate to move on
Hopefully Treliving makes some knee jerk moves based on the short term disapointment but not likely
Turtle being a hardnose Tkatchuk and wanting to outdo his brother won’t take a discount and that will force the issue
Both are going to want 9 plus on term. Johnny has been on discount for years. Just like Nurse it’s time to pay the piper or I’m walking.
Goddamnit, Woody.
Just when I thought I couldn’t love you more, you go with the class act move in your opening statement in the post game presser.
