Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.
The train is leaving the station for the ninth time. All aboard the McDavid-Draisaitl express, next stop glory! I think this regular season is going to feature some wild arguments in the comments section. Why? The regular season for this Edmonton Oilers team has a great chance of being a success. What comes after is the real thing.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER
- On the road to: VAN (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: VAN (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: NAS, PHIL (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: WPG (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: MIN (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: NYR, CAL (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 6-2-0, 12 points in 8 games
- Actual October results: 0-0-0, 0 points in 0 game
- Oilers in 2023-24: 0-0-0, 0 points in 0 game
I think it’s possible the Oilers run hotter than 6-2-0 but there are some things (more in a moment). The top end talent is going to (once again) float all the boats in Christendom. I think 6-2-0 is right, if it’s 5-3-0 no one should be torn asunder.
OBSERVATIONS
During preseason the McDavid line (with Evander Kane and Connor Brown) was fire. In 30 minutes together five-on-five, they were 4-0 goals and 73 percent expected goals. I think Connor Brown is exactly what this line needs, but also think Connor Brown is what the Draisaitl line needs. His line (with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman) is just 1-1 goals in 30 minutes with a 48 percent expected goal share. Leon often sits under 50 percent in the possession metrics, but one goal is low for his line. I think we might see a shuffle.
Pairings are likely to be all over hell’s half acre. Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard played a ton together at five-on-five in the preseason (76 minutes), finished 3-4 goals and 48 percent expected goals. Philip Broberg with Cody Ceci spent 27 minutes together, 1-0 goals and 65 percent expected goals five-on-five. Suspect they run:
- Kane-McDavid-Brown
- Nuge-Draisaitl-Hyman
- Holloway-McLeod-Foegele
- Janmark, Ryan
- Nurse-Bouchard
- Broberg-Ceci
- Kulak-Desharnais
- Ekholm
- Campbell (Skinner)
My feeling is we’ll see all kinds of combinations tonight with Ekholm the key. Campbell should be the starter on merit, but running Skinner on the road and giving Campbell the home start also works.
MEMORIES
I remember it like yesterday. Saturdays in fall and winter. Sometimes we would spend the day raking leaves, placing them in barrels, and burning them. It remains one of my favourite aromas although you rarely encounter it now. Back in Maidstone, or more accurately the old McLaren school 17 miles north of Maidstone, my brother and I would fashion a rink on the driveway. Ski-doo boots, warm jacket, mittens, sticks and a rubber bouncy puck or ball. The nets were two saw horses we stole from Dad, the goalie at each end two 10-gallon buckets. You had little room high, and could drill the pick through the buckets but had to be my brother (four years older and stronger by a country mile) to do it. I remember breathing in the cool fall air, watching the sun go down and the outside light come on, and waiting for Mom to call supper.
Years went by, my brother placed his stick in the shed and left for women, cars, demon liquor and the world that awaited him. Alone, I kept up the game, one sawhorse now, I could be the Bruins all the time. Not the same. I remember missing him terribly those years between his growing up and mine. He’d bring A&W root beer home in a big jug and we’d talk about his adventures (man, he liked women). Eventually, I too put my stick in the shed and made my way into the world, finding my place in the sun.
I think about that plot of land often. You drive to the Allan Store 17 miles north, turn left and we’re right by the first road crossing two miles down the road. Dad and Mom, my brother and me haven’t been on that spot for 50 years, but those nets and those dreams remain with me. They are stronger when the hockey season arrives.
I think I’ll drive to Maidstone someday soon.
A fun show on Sports 1440 today, noon-2pm. We’ll be joined by my friend Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal. He’ll give us his expert preview on the season’s lid lifter and I plan to dig into that giant memory bank for Oilers openers in years gone by. Harman Dayal from The Athletic will join us to talk about the Canucks offseason and expectations for the season to come. You can reach me in the comments section, @Lowetide on twitter, or text us 1.833.401.1440 directly.
Summary:
— But wait Campbell looked so good in preseason. But preseason doesn’t a matter. It was so long the preseason.
— it’s one game, small sample size. But wait campbell sucked. We can’t take much from it. The sky is falling.
Bouchard is a seductive player. Great shot great passer. Too often in my opinion, no clue from the red line down to his own end boards.
I didn’t watch the game, no access as I am in Houston all week, it is not the city I thought it was. I like Dallas a lot more.
Just reading about Holloway with the open palm block, when I see that I am reminded of how RNH broke his hand the same way while defending a point shot on the PK early in his career.
I recall Holloway using that same stance last season and wondered why a player like RNH would not advise him against that…
Go to the Maple Leaf Pub if in Houston. Westheimer and Bagby. They have every game going and people go with their colours. I go when the Oilers are playing Calgary.
Well, the good news is we can break up Brown and McD. Put Hyman up there, maybe Nuge as well.
I remember some season starts where folks were planning the parade. This year, people are jumping off bridges after game one.
I think a brutal start is a good thing for a team like this. Humility helps a team that believes the hype really understand how steep the hill really is.
It is game 1 of 82, if this group is serious about Stanley, they will have this sorted out in short order.
More time catch up if you fall behind early…
In all honesty the only real positive was that it’s one hell of a reality check to start the season. If this a good room, and the players have been claiming it is for a long time, they should be able to use as fuel this going forward.
I might have some bias because I still have high hopes for the player but I think Broberg had the best individual performance of the D group, now that’s kind of like being the least drunk person in a downtown Glasgow bar, but still. He left Boeser open on the 6th(or 7th?) GA but was directing traffic just before so I’m wondering if it was him or someone else who was out of position. Would have to rewatch the play. Not sure I want to though…
The players should shame-watch the tape and then burn it. Upwards and onwards.
I commented at the time that it looked like Broberg indicated to Bouchard to switch. Bouchard clearly didn’t see the hand wave. Now maybe Broberg wasn’t calling switch, b/c you can’t hear them, but that’s what it looked like.
Bouchard lost his man and then followed him behind Broberg. Bouchard should have called a switch, not Broberg. I don’t think Broberg knew Bouchard ws switching, so he let Boesser go,because he felt/saw the Canuck that Bouchard lost behind him.
Bouchard lost his man and then skated to the right side of the ice without telling anybody.
Thomas Drance
@ThomasDrance
Thatcher Demko was dehydrated, battling the flu says Rick Tocchet.
Tocchet said he tried to battle through it, but he pulled him once Demko threw up in his mask.
Wow – what a goalie. I wish we had one of those.
The last one was Mike Smith.
Nurse, Bouch, Ceci all looked BRUTAL. Thankfully Ekholm will improve Nurse and Bouch simultaneously….Ceci might have to be jettisoned
1) Ekholm needs a raise if he has to do his job as well as cover for Nurse, Bouch and Ceci.
2) The Nurse contract is effectively untradeable. He is being paid $2M more than he should be with term. We are stuck with him.
3) Who is going to take on Ceci and at what cost? Would love to jettison Ceci and cycle through Nemo/Kemp/Gleason to see if someone can stick.
4) Bouch fits in perfectly on a team that doesn’t play defense. Great offense and not usually too noticeable defensively when everyone else struggles on D as well. Oiler for life.
all this means is the oilers will be the first team to win the cup after opening the season with an 8-1 loss
Last year they had a team meeting after Christmas after another horrific start, and then lost to the Kings in an embarrassing affair with heavy contribution from the officials. They largely wrecked teams after that turnaround. Shame on them if they wait till the New Year to decide to play with commitment.
It’s only one game and we’ll see, but how many times have we seen this movie?
Worst opening night loss since 1991 9-2 Calgary. went tot he WC Final that year though.
Zero excuses for that. Literally no reason.
How these guys manage to just not show up after all that “unfinished business” talk is beyond me.
Because it’s just talk?
As I said yesterday, expectations mean nothing unless they show they are committed. At 5-1 I went to bed. Bouchard was horrible. At least he will be cheap next contract…..
Well that was disappointing, I was really rooting for 10!
8 will have to do. 🤷♂️
Its one game…..blah, man they looked like an AHL team tonight. Horrid.
Flush that one….
You kinda called it though…complete with fan reactions.
Stop it! 😡😡😡😝😝😝
Stanley cup or Bust… tonight definitely looked like the latter.
Stauffer: “I think we’re going to see some compete drills Thursday and Friday, Jack.”
Boeser ties Naslund and Sather’s old buddy, Bobby Schmautz, who was a ubiquitous hockey card back in the day, for most Canuck goals in a game tonight.
Woody shouldn’t have touched the d-system at all. They were fine. Only needed to tweak the system when playing Vegas. They were dominating in the last half of last season.
but yeah, obviously Bouch is completely lost without Ekholm.
No system was being played tonight. They stood there and watched.
No system will work with that level of compete and lack of engagement. 4 hits from the D all game and a whole lota minus
Why the hell does Bouchard get this Pp after this display of non compete?
Serves us right with no deathmarch contest.
Well put!
🤣🤣🤣
It would seem the parade planning was a bit premature.
So is writing them off after one game.
Touche!
Honestly, they should just skip the preseason and the captain skates, and just start the season on game 1. Based on what we’ve seen tonight, all that preamble was completely pointless.
Quoting Raphael Lavoie…
“This whole game is fromunda fromage”…
Has the coach done any coaching tonight outside of pulling a goalie who was not at fault for the score at the time he was pulled?
Makes my wonder how good the training camp was….
Look like the frickin Toronto Maple Leafs out there. Bunch of Barbara Ann Scotts figure skating their way through their own zone.
/PatQuinn
What in the actual F was Bouchard doing there?
Backs behind the goal line with a F bearing down on his G after a loose puck. I’ve never seen such a soft game from a D man. He should get absolutely roasted for this game!
This is not the type of player who helps win cups.
Bouchard is EKHOLM DEPENDENT……pardon the whole defence and team is…
Oof. Bouchard just kind of stood there and watched him score.
Zero redeeming outcomes here.
One of the worst Oilers games I’ve ever seen.
And probably a broken hand for 55 to boot.
Oilers are getting manhandled.
Damn… If only Raph Lavoie was the 12th forward.
Not sure.
I do wonder if Woody was too preoccupied in training camp finding tradesmen to play with Lavoie.
Kenny Holland just admitted it was ( or felt like ) a looong training camp.
I am going to throw…I dunno.
D zone structure and PK work on the list for next years training camp.
As an aside, Adam ‘the welder’ Erne is still with the team.
BTW, this was sarcasm & supposed to be a joke.
*but it’s my bad for forgetting the sarcasm indicators*
Nope. My bad….apologies
Bouchard having about as bad a game as one can have…
That last goal may have been the worst though…where was he going?
I think Bouchard is going super nova offensively this year…I love him
But, tonight has been some comically bad defending.
Do you pay him $11 million per season for 8 years two summers from now? Or fasttrack Akey?
Yeah, could be a big problem. You can’t pay up like that for a guy that can’t really defend.
Again, nobody should pretend to be surprised by this aspect of his game.
Many scouts talked -exactly – about this in his D zone game.
Nobody questioned his offensive game
should have dealt him in the summer. He is nothing without Ekholm.
Yep – I said it earlier … he looks completely disinterested in engaging physically, and is just drifting around with zero urgency. A first pairing RHD is he is not. I suspect it won’t be long before we see Nurse-Ceci, once Ekholm gets back to babysit ‘dad’.
Nurse Broberg.
Bouchard can’t play 5 v 5 against anyone with anyone if that’s the effort given. Other than PP where do you play him?
Next to Ekholm until the trade deadline. Let him pump up his numbers on the PP and then trade him for a RHD that knows how to find his own zone at the deadline.
I cannot disagree with this.
torn asunder
This is an absolute joke. Bouchard is doing NOTHING.
If this isn’t part of Woody’s post game diatribe to the team, it should be.
Louis rubbing it in with the this Canucks ravaged by the Flu bit.
Well hopefully this puts an end to the “Oilers are a contender” discussions. It sounds like it will take a good number of reps before the new defensive system is ready to go.
So what’s everyone drinking tonight!
Nyquil.
Hoping to forget.
Best answer ever. 🤣🤣🤣
You’ll need to spike that with some GHB then ;-p
Maybe not the smartest move by Holloway to put your hand out open palm to stop a slapped down by a touchdown.
Blocking shots with your hand in a 7-1 game…nope Dylan. That’s a nope.
PK is humming like it did last year….
that last one bit Holloway good
Holloway showing some heart
4 1sts, Nurse, Campbell, Broberg, Holloway, more 1sts for that Buick in Winnipeg.
Are you kidding me? He couldn’t stop a beachball against Calgary just got a raise and is massively overrated. They need better defencemen.
No lack of motivation for the Oilers on Saturday night. Who starts in net?
I would end the game playing third and fourth lines only if I was coach. This is an embarrassment.
I’ll bet this is candidate for worst game by seasons end. Better be.
This is still a candidate for worst game ever.
Tocchet had these guys ready and their confidence is growing.
Stop the fight…..
Lost draw in their own end…no worries. Not a care in the world.
McDavid and Kane are having a night here…
Good news is oilers are going to have plenty of video evidence of wtf not to do!!! Many video sessions upcoming.
Video is not going to correct what we are seeing tonight.
