Christmas is about memories, and Todd Kirkpatrick gave me a wonderful moment last night when he sent me this photo of Turtle Lake. It’s about 30 minutes (if I recall) from the Allan Store, which (iirc) was 17 miles north of Maidstone. We lived two miles up the road (turn left at the store coming from Maidstone), and lived in an old school. Up the road was Keith Schwartz, a bunch of Lundquists, Leachmans.
Turn right at the store, it was the Franks farm, and some more Schwartz’s, including my friend Brian who could hit a ball one mile when we were kids. Kevin Jarrett, another friend, lived somewhere around there but I can’t recall the exact location. Charlene Lee was the first stop after Maidstone on the school bus, I had about half an hour of stops before getting to my place. Silver Lake was just before the store coming from Maidstone. That’s where Pop Eidsness taught us all to golf in Grade 9. He was a good man and a fine teacher. I was afraid of his wife, Mrs. Eidsness, and I wasn’t alone among the males in the school population at Maidstone High. Her lecture to me in the office about abuse of the double entendre is still ringing in my ears!
That’s a lot of memories in one photo. Funny how time slips away, but the memories remain. It’s a wonder.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN DECEMBER
- At home to: CAR, MIN, NJD, CHI, TBAY, FLA (Expected 3-3-0) (Actual 4-2-0)
- On the road to: NYI, NJD, NYR, SJS, LAK, ANA (Expected 3-3-0) (Actual 2-1-0)
- Overall expected result: 6-6-0, 12 points in 12 games
- Actual December results: 6-3-0, 12 points in 9 games
- Oilers in 2023-24: 15-15-1, 31 points in 31 games
When we last left the Oilers, they were saving their season. If Edmonton can go 2-1-0 in the final three games of December, the club will celebrate New Year’s Day with a record of 17-16-1, 35 points in 34 games. That’s after a 2-9-1 start, meaning this Oilers team is running hot—15-7-0 in their last 22 games. That’s some fine hockey.
NEWS
Sam Gagner won’t play (via Matty) and so that means Adam Erne stays in the lineup. Ben Gleason is the designated sitter and one expects Stuart Skinner to start. There are sometimes lineup tweaks due to illness/late flights, so stay close to the town telegraph office today.
ROSTER CONSTRUCTION
The Oilers are 24 men deep right now and they were procured in the following manner:
- Draft (9): Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Ryan McLeod, Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard, Vincent Desharnais, Stuart Skinner, Dylan Holloway (IR).
- NHL free agents (10): Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, Mattias Janmark, Derek Ryan, Connor Brown, Adam Erne, Sam Gagner, Cody Ceci, Ben Gleason, Calvin Pickard.
- Trade (3): Warren Foegele, Mattias Ekholm, Brett Kulak.
- CHL free-agent signings (1): James Hamblin.
- College free-agent signings (1): Ryan Fanti.
The Oilers have eight draft picks and each of them contributes in a significant way. There was some concern not long ago about Stuart Skinner and Ryan McLeod, but both men appear to have turned a corner. Organizations need to develop young players, and have those players emerge as feature players. From Nuge in 2011 to Bouchard in 2018, there are some high-end talents here.
The NHL free agents are the largest population, but in truth a few of those names are marginal NHL players. I’d suggest Gleason and Pickard qualify in this category. Hyman is a monster signing, absolute home run so far, with plenty of contract to come.
The trade route is a small but vital piece of the pie. Ekholm is a foundation piece, with Foegele and Kulak offering depth on wing and defense.
The Oilers under Ken Holland have turned off the tap on European free agents, with college and CHL free-agent signings also rare. The Condors are filled with mid-20’s players who were signed as free agents and can fill in if required in the NHL. The price paid? The potential on the Bakersfield roster is low, unless I’ve missed a gem in there somewhere. Here’s the Bakersfield procurement order.
- Draft (12): Raphael Lavoie, Xavier Bourgault, Carter Savoie, Tyler Tullio, Matvey Petrov, Jake Chiasson, Philip Broberg, Markus Niemelainen, Max Wanner, Phil Kemp, Olivier Rodrigue, Beau Akey (jr).
- NHL free agents (7): Lane Pederson, Drake Caggiula, Seth Griffith, Brad Malone, Greg McKegg, Noel Hoefenmeyer, Jack Campbell.
- Trade (2): Jayden Grubbe, Cam Dineen
- CHL free-agent signings (1): Brady Stonehouse (jr)
- College free-agent signings (1): Carl Berglund.
- AHL contracts (6): Cameron Wright, Dino Kambeitz, Ethan de Jong, Alex Peters, Connor Corcoran, Xaver Bernard.
- Ft. Wayne (ECHL) contracts (8): Jack Dugan, Matthew Wedman, Ture Linden, Darien Kielb, Jake Johnson, Noah Ganske, Tyler Parks, Brett Brochu.
I’m not sure how many Komets can be recalled to Edmonton, but those are the names of note. Holland is running a low-risk scheme with free agents, allowing them to audition on minor-league deals. It has paid off in contracts (Desharnais, Hamblin) and could soon (Wright), but I would prefer the organization aim higher and compete for impact college and junior kids. Perhaps the new general manager will do it.
Leon at 19 minutes, McDavid at 16 minutes and the lowest player (Erne) over 10 minutes.
Like.
So just checking if the two points tonight were meaningless??
The San Jose Sharks are a team in the NHL.
I’m going to be honest – expected a much more crushing performance on the scoreboard.
Could we get a sit down with 99, 11, 7 and 17 for the team so that they can be made to understand why you run that score WAY up?
Oilers win 5-0.
What scored would it take for you to be happy?
Skins has his A game. What a thing of beauty!
Skaters had their A game in the first but decided to coast through most of the second and all of the third.
When we play hard we look damn near unstoppable.
Full marks to Skinner. He earned this Shutout, no thanks to the coverage in the second and third.
Business like effort gets the job done
On to LA
SHUTOUT!
But other than that, what a Tryptophan tilt this was.
Great game Stu, great game. 👌
Canucks and Kings lose in regulation.
Hear, hear.
Lots of turnovers up the middle here in our own zone. I think the team is already looking to the LA game.
Is the plan to give Stew a workout? Sloppy out there, rn…
Steady Stu stays square, cross crease. Nice save.
OK lets win this period for Stu!
…Not like they don’t owe him.
If the Kings and Knights could avoid a three point game that would be nice. 3-1 Kiniggits right now with about 5 to play.
So-so period. Dominated for stretches but got running around in our zone a few to many times for my liking. Skinner was sharp! Also not liking the sharks taking shots at our guys. Time to ignore the puck a bit and blast a few, too. Tit for tat. Can’t let a bottom feeder out muscle us. Send a message.
The new objective should be to get some depth goals. Ahem… paging Connor Brown
Real nice move by Erne. I’ve liked his game recently.
Hes upped his game since he got back into the lineup, for sure. Actually making plays, now. Instead of killing them.
Impressive shift by the Oil gets rewarded, just when sharks were showing some life
BOOM!!! Hyman in the good area again!!!
last thing the Sharks needed was a double deflection goal, lol. they had pulled up their socks…
Hyman from his office.
Burroughs -5, so far.
TSN has goal scored by Ceci?
Credited to RNH now, and I’m not mad about it.
Yeah,a lot going on with that goal – Ceci shot, deflects off Nuge’s stick, bounces up after hitting the defender’s skate/leg, then changes direction again after hitting the defenders glove
And now Nuge??
Foot appears to be off the gas. Cruise control is set to “coast.”
Can’t say I am real impressed with our play so far this period…..
OK I stand corrected, goal #5!
that was a a quality reflex pad save from Skins
These stripes are tossing someone from about 7/10 face-offs. Get a grip.
I am fairly critical of Holland’s pro scouting.
But Hyman is dialed. Has been value since day 1.
Kenny nailed that one !!!
Remenda hates the Oilers, this is hilarious.
I was so happy when he left the Oilers. It never made any sense to me to have a guy on a home broadcast team that was a BIG fan of another rival team.
Anyone else miss the intermission summaries from LT?
He has more important things to do now …
Glass …
Ice ….
Drink of choice …
🙂
If I woulda know that all I had to do was ask I woulda done it a lot sooner.
Helluva period! Totally out working them in the offensive zone! Some wobble a few times in the D zone but they seem to have a better plan back there at it’s miles better than the start of the year.
Warms my heart. Might be the scotch, though…
What’s your dram tonight?
Chivas Regal. Says 18 years. Smooth…
Niiiice! One period in the books and 9 of 18 Oiler skaters have a point so far. Let’s get a point for everyone now.
Like Oprah. You get a point, you get a point, you get a point….
Well that was quite the dominant period by the Oil! There were some sloppy moments in their own end but Skinner cleaned it up. Like to see that 7-1 score predicted earlier.
I think the bookies are sweating the over on this one! Bury em in rubber, boys! Send a message we are baaaack….
Holy Moses, the SJS broadcast tandem for NBC is AHL quality.
They’re so bad, I’m going to have to switch over to Sportsnet.
McCleod with another apple
BOOM!!! Drai goes to the good area and Foggy finds him!!! Great forechecking!!!
Sweet pass by Foegle after Highlander digs the puck out! Love it!
on paper, that line shouldn’t be much of anything, but they’re getting it done
Good thing they play on ice!
Drai adds a cherry on top
Despite the score on an ahl team, Oilers puck management has been poor in spurts. Two long 2 on 1s, 3 easy give aways by so-called veterans.
In O zone they are fire though.
We’re going in Drai.
That’s pretty amazing!
That looked like Brown redirected Bouchs bomb
I thought so too, but I guess not
THREE!!! Oil really getting payback for the loss which cost them their head coach.
I believe it was their own ball licking that cost big Wood his job
He tried to reinvent the wheel. The best thing that happened was San Jose whipping us enough for Action Jackson to call Holland on the bat phone.
BOOM!!! Owning the puck!!! Bouch Bomb for the finish!!!
I think Brown scores tonight
… we wait
“A long time”
on which net, though?
Evan the B-52 Bomber.
Oh my! Beauty Bouch Bomb!!!!
Brown gets the puck in his own end and pass’s cross ice directly to a Shark!! WTF! He seems to be getting worse.
That was Brown? Thought it was Hamblin
I think it was 13, which would have been Janmark??? My apologies to Mr Brown!
Can’t tell with the camera work tonight. Some left over rum and egg nogs for the camera crew tonight I guess
Bouch is such a filthy passer. That whole play you could see he was keeping tabs on where Drai was back-side.
Why the whistle?
Bouch with some brilliant work but Drai wasn’t ready! lol To busy watching the talent…
Great look off by 97. Some guy named Wayne used to be good at that to
Wayne Cashman?
