This is the ‘certain Oilers’ list from late August 2023. There are 20 names here, so you could expect all of these men to play for Edmonton (all 20 have played for the team). Five additional players have joined the party. Who are they, and how far back were they perceived to be at the beginning of training camp?

WHAT TO EXPECT IN JANUARY
- At home to: PHI, OTT (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- On the road to: CHI, DET, MTL (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: TOR, SEA (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: CAL (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: CBJ, CHI, NAS (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 7-3-1, 15 points in 11 games
- Actual January results: 1-0-0, 2 points in 1 game
- Oilers in 2023-24: 19-15-1, 39 points in 35 games
Several people I respect have suggested my prediction is too conservative based on December. I get it, the team seems invincible these days. However, when you factor in this club’s history of stubbing its toe against lesser lights, I’ll stick with my 7-3-1 Nostradamus. For those who asked, the three losses are Montreal, Toronto and Nashville.
UNCERTAIN OILERS
Four of the five names were on the ‘uncertain’ list: James Hamblin, Sam Gagner, Raphael Lavoie and Calvin Pickard. The fifth man, Adam Erne, was invited later on. In truth, all of the names here could play this season in Edmonton, although Seth Griffith’s on-ice goal share at even strength is a concern.
DISTANT BELLS
From this group, Ben Gleason has been recalled but did not play. Candidates for recall on this list include Olivier Rodrigue, and pretty much all of the blue. Funny, Brandon Sutter’s name seems like such a vague and foggy memory. Time flies when you’re having fun.
HOLLAND’S RECALLS
Fans want to see the future now and Ken Holland wants all of his children to live at home until they have enough to buy their first home with no debt. As much as I’d like to see Raphael Lavoie as a regular, the actual results of his uncertain Oilers have been rock solid in 2023-24. All numbers five-on-five.
- Sam Gagner 2.73 pts-60; 60 pct goal share
- James Hamblin 0.89 pts-60; 64 pct goal share
- Adam Erne 0.86 pts-60; 67 pct goal share
- Raphael Lavoie 0.00 pts-60; nil
- Calvin Pickard 2.87 GAA; .903 SP
I know it isn’t sexy. I would prefer Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg and Raphael Lavoie on this roster. I would like to see Olivier Rodrigue down the stretch. Holland’s aces are good. Flat out good. Credit where due.
I’ll have an article up this weekend looking at the Oilers prospect pool. One of the questions we can’t answer: WHO becomes the No. 7 defenseman and first recall if Broberg is traded? It’s not an easy answer. I think the current depth chart looks like this:
- Mattias Ekholm
- Evan Bouchard
- Darnell Nurse
- Cody Ceci
- Brett Kulak
- Vincent Desharnais
- Philip Broberg
- Ben Gleason
- Markus Niemelainen
- Cam Dineen
- Noel Hoefenmayer
- Phil Kemp
- Max Wanner
- Alex Peters
SATURDAY NIGHT
When I was young, my Dad worked six days a week. Mon-Friday and then Saturday until noon. He worked miles away, so wouldn’t get home until early afternoon. He would get out of his (yellow, his favourite colour) truck, I would grab his thermos and lunch kit and we’d walk to the house together. My dog, Colby, would be wagging his tail and being a wonderful fool. Labrador dogs live forever in your heart, they are beautiful. Dad would smell of sweat, it’s a sweetish smell, and Mom would tell him to have a shower as soon as he hit the front door.
I loved Saturday afternoons, we would play cribbage for awhile and then my brother and I would retire to the shed behind the house (where we discovered matches one rainy day and damn near burned down the whole damn thing. The giveaway? Smell of matches and my singed eyebrows).
Later on, we would walk across the property to Grandma and Grandpa’s house. On the way, there were old cars (that was commonplace in the sixties), apple trees, Grandpa’s sawmill (he made little boxes for the hatchery), the big horse Tom, a sheep, some strawberries, a big garden, various dogs and cats, a church pew, bikes.
At Grandma’s, the beer would flow, the food was endless, the cigarette and pipe smoke hung in the air like balloons. It was magic. Adults would play cards, the lights would go on, and I’d watch the hockey game. It was Hockey Night in Canada. All of the adults would watch the game at the start, but fade away to other activities.
Grandma and me were always the last ones standing for the hockey. She was a fine woman. She loved the game, knew the game, and taught me hockey more than anyone I’ve ever known. She loved Johnny Bower, Gary Smith made her nervous (Smith skated to center ice once with the TML and she damn near lost her mind), she loved Allan Stanley and we both loved Dave Keon.
I sometimes think of my Grandma on Saturdays. In a life blessed by strong women who knew what was important, she stood out as a person who took time. There’s a lesson there. She was present for so much of my life, offering guidance and being kind. I’ve been blessed so much in my life, I could write this about several people. Today, with hockey on the way and work to do, I’m reminded of a kind woman who offered love and support with a smile and freshly baked bread with butter and jam. What a gift she was to me. I hope she’ll be watching tonight.
I’m not sure, but that might be the Oilers first victory when they have had 40+ shots. I know they were 0-6-1 earlier.
2nd actually. Dec. 8 vs. The Wild: 4-3 Win, 40-20 shot ratio (for Oilers)
Also, Nov. 30 win vs. Jets and Dec. 31 win vs. Ducks both had 39 shots for the Oilers. One shy of 40.
Hyman has to easily be the greatest UFA signing in NHL I mean Oilers history right?
Is Hyman the Taylor Hall of 2018. Seems like everything is going in.
man, I want Hyman to score 50 so bad. He just needs to grow a solid stache and do it in true Glenn Anderson form.
If McDavid had Gretzky’s or Ovi’s killer instinct with an empty net….
He almost seems reluctant to shoot as he looks for someone to pass to.
KK the first coach to have two 7 game win streaks in his first 25 games coached per the radio
Oil are starting Skinner–Pickard–Skinner over the next three per Bob
I thought Stuart Skinner was rock solid tonight. Now owns a .912SP at five-on-five for the season.
fixing his numbers in real time and career. 908 save% i think we have something in this guy!
Would like to see Gagner and Holloway in, Erne and Brown out…….
Gagner in for Erne seems like a no-brainer.
I have no issue with Holloway playing a string of games in the AHL before he’s brought in.
Brown is a key member of the PK and the PK is an important part of the game.
Hamblin would be my choice to come out for Holloway.
AHL time for Holloway is the right move. Bring him up after he gains confidence.
It took 36 games, but the Oilers are now (finally) in a playoff spot.
What a turnaround!!!
GO OILERS GO!!!!
Wasn’t pretty, a bit sloppy at times but the Oilers were the better team in each period, in particular the 1st and 3rd. Clear separation in this game between the teams.
I’ll take the win, but they can’t keep sinking to the other team’s level of sloppiness.
They are 15-3 in their last 18 games.
This was their first game in 4 days.
There is going to be some slop in the season, right?
Two sloppy ones back to back and a stretch of sloppy teams ahead. Sloppy habits are not a long term recipe for success and are the reason the Oil had the crap start they did. So “some” slop has been killer. Hopefully the coach can nip it in the bud. Obviously it’s not a concern for you. Fair enough. Doubt the coach will agree.
Both those games resulting in multi-goal wins. In fact, in this 7 game streak, the only games that were not multi-goal wins were over the Rangers and Kings.
I agree with the general premise but the Oilers are winning games handily but for against the league’s top elite (and “just winning” those games).
My initial post states that I am not okay with continued sloppiness. You disagree. I’m okay with you holding that stance as bizarre as it appears to me.
I personally don’t think the goal of this season is to beat the Ottawas, San Joses and Anaheims of this world. Again, clearly you are satisfied with their play. The coach wasn’t last game and this game they were worse. If you can’t see how this can become a real problem—just like it was for the first twelve games–I’m sorry I can’t help you.
Solid win (though not perfect).
Great game by Skinner. Hyman and Bouchard would be my other 2 stars.
2 points is the biggest thing.
La Bamba!!!!!!
Oilers one minute from jumping into a playoff spot for the first time all season…
C’mon Browner
Aghhh, shoot that Stu with a 2 goal lead.
Kane-Draisaitl-Brown is a nice touch by KK.
I know a bald guy who would be mortified at the thought of throwing his hat on the Oilers ice.
I feel caps are coming now just to keep the lady in the pants on the ice
3 assists for Bouchard as well, I believe.
Z! A true hollywood story!
3 points for each of Hyman and Bouch.
Both these guys should be going to Toronto (although, really, I’d prefer a few day off but I bet they would each like to go for their first times).
Bout time Connor got a point! Atta boy Zach hat attack!
Zach Hatman!
Stupid Oilers…score!
lol
Glad to see the hat trick, and the win sealed (seemingly).
Hattrick Hyman!!!!!
that was pretty
Hatty!
McDavid’s last pair of two on ones…
McD and Draisaitl – passes to Drai who blows it
McD and Hyman – passes to Hyman who blows it.
You have to reckon at least one of those goes in if McD shoots which makes the game out of reach.
hes so passionate! always passin it!
Some would suggest it was McDavid that below both – neither pass made it to the tape.
What’s the data on Mcdavid and shots so far this year? My eye test tells me he is shooting less and lost a touch of his killer instinct on the shot. Kinda resembles his 20/21 years as opposed to his last season or two. Obviously wants to get his guys going, but should be shooting in those money spots.
This is a seriously weak effort from the Oilers.
Skinner has been great.
And Fogele is having a solid game.
I agree. Some bad habits returned tonight.
On the positive side – good teams still win those games.
The test is whether Knoblauch whips them right back into shape for next time out. Gagner should be in for sure.
Agreed, Gagner should draw in.
I said last game was the trap game but I guess this was the real trap game. You come off the Xmas/New Year’s hangover and coming off a road trip and hugely successful December but have to focus on coming home and cleaning up.
So you do. And tonight bites you in the ass.
Bouchard didn’t challenge the Tkachuk move to the net.. Backed up and away from Brady.
He should have stepped up and into him. Soft play by this years Norris Trophy defenseman.
The situation was getting far out of hand before Bouchard got near this.
Evan “Norris” Bouchard could have put a end to the disorder with a simple standup the forward play.
You shoulda seen godot’s comments when Coffey had 138 points and was +61🙃
When Evan is plus 61,,,,
LOL. Bouchard just daydreaming in front of the net.
I love Bouch but some parts of his game you need to ignore to keep sanity.
Oilers team were all dreaming before that goal.
You too bad he didn’t have a little snarl in him.
This is another Skinner shutout bid lost to the poor play of the skaters. That’s an upgrade from outright losses, but they can still eff this up.
Yea unfortunate.
100%.
The goal was a direct result of three players doing their best human statue impression.
That looks like a goal to me. Note I am high.
How does Greig not get a penalty on that play?
Sens had to challenge. Crazy not to
That’s a good goal.
I would be shocked if this isn’t overturned
I’ve seen better.
😆
Janmark was set up too well. He doesn’t know how to score goals that pretty. He needs to claw his way to the net.
Janny needs to learn a backhand move
Hyman now given credit for the Oilers first goal.
The top line dumping the puck in behind the D on the rush is always heartening – at any point of the game (Hyman now but I saw McDavid do it in the 2nd).
I thought they might call that interference
Yea you had to know next penalty was going to us.
Connor Brown made a nice play after a ghastly giveaway. My goodness this team.
Drai almost did the same thing a couple minutes earlier. Both right at the blue line. With the damn lead.
Yes he did. The tight play from December seems to have slipped a little.
Looking forward to the return of Gagner and Holloway. Bottom six is in need of a skill injection.
Gagner was available for tonight – coach’s decision…..
I think a little speed, too. Holloway will help there.
Was just thinking this game is pretty tedious. Thanks Zach!
Another great primary point by Bouchard.
Snypman!
Zach Attack!!! Boosh with the assist
Very damn key insurance goal!
Well done Zach Hyman. Lovely pass by Evan Bouchard.
Brilliant Bouchard Pass
