This is the roster for the outdoor game against the Calgary Flames at the end of October 2023. Ekholm-Broberg didn’t see the light of day, and the McDavid line above didn’t cash, but the second line and a supergroup trio shuffled mid-game (McDavid with Draisaitl and Hyman) did some real damage.
These Oilers have a chance at Stanley, and fans need a team to measure against them. The old Calgary Flames of the 1980’s were splendid, as were the New York Islanders. I would like a rivalry to exist between the Alberta teams, because I associate a venomous relationship between the two teams with the best times. If Calgary is going to be in the conversation in March, then a win tonight is vital.
I expect shenanigans.

The Oilers are not just a wagon, they’re the war wagon right now and it seems only defensive indifference, fatigue, luck and the black and white stripes can stop them. You’d like a better power play, but the penalty kill is shining on right now so let’s review.
The 1984 Oilers, the first Stanley team, had formidable off-ice advantages. Glen Sather was a fine general manager, still the best in team history and for my money one of the best ever despite the post-1990 coda. John Muckler and Ted Green helped Slats coach, Muckler the chalkboard warrior and Green the actual warrior. Roger Neilson was doing video work and the Oilers were more prepared than they’d ever been.
I always point to the 1-0 opening game against the Islanders, Kevin McClelland cashing a Pat Hughes pass. Grant Fuhr was brilliant in that game, stopping 34 shots (7 from Denis Potvin). Game 2 was a tough game for Edmonton, Clark Gillies getting a hat trick and the top line (Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy) collecting eight points. I remember Bossy had back issues, suspect several Islanders were not their best.
Game 3 was pivotal and a 2-2 tie until late in the second when Edmonton scored twice (Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey) and put it to rest. Game 4 saw Mark Messier score late in the first period to make it 3-1 and a trio of markers in the second secured a commanding 3-1 lead in games for the Oilers.
Game 5 was the clincher. A double shot of Gretzky (Kurri) in the first, Linseman and Kurri in the second to make it 4-0. Pat Lafontaine scares the hell out of Edmonton with two early in the third, Dave Lumley pierces the heart of the empty net at 19:47 and the celebration was underway.
The second periods of Games 3 and 4 were vital to the win, much the same as the second periods of Games 5 & 6 were to the Vegas Golden Knights last spring. It’s a game of inches, small margins and heavy drinking.
I think fans who don’t remember the 5 Stanley Cups won in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988 and 1990 think were a breeze, they were somehow guaranteed. I can list many great teams that never won the Stanley Cup for various reasons.
The 1969-74 Chicago Blackhawks should have won, but a Jacques Lemaire shot late in the second period of the 1971 classic (Game 7, no less) felled them. The 1972 New York Rangers lost their best player (Jean Ratelle) during a pre-game skate when defensemen Dale Rolfe shot the puck and injured the classy center. The Brian Propp Philadelphia Flyers and the Brian Propp Boston Bruins also should have won. Any edition of the San Jose Sharks over many years should have won. The Vancouver Canucks in the Sedin era should have won, and I’ll add the Linden era just for fun.
This is a very difficult road. Things I’ve read about Stuart Skinner even in recent days suggests to me that some fans feel there should be some kind of guarantee involved in the McDavid Oilers winning the Stanley Cup. It doesn’t work like that, never has and never will. It’s possible the McDavid Oilers never win Stanley and that’s what makes the chase so exciting. If the team wins, you never have to wonder if it was earned.
I would like to post some thought about Stuart Skinner. Since November 24, his save percentage (.930) ranks him No. 4 among goalies with 500+ minutes (all strengths) via Natural Stat Trick. His GSAA is 12.17 and ranks No. 3 overall in that time. Yet I keep reading about his being out of position on the Auston Matthews goal. No shit he was out of position, did you see the pass???
It’s okay to change your mind when new evidence appears. It’s better to trust the larger sample size. The eye test isn’t always right, that’s why we count things. Stuart Skinner is playing brilliantly for the Edmonton Oilers. That isn’t an opinion. It is a fact.
New for The Athletic: The Edmonton Oilers’ 6 biggest 2023-24 first half surprises
https://theathletic.com/5215010/2024/01/20/edmonton-oilers-2023-24-surprises/
I figure it’s more likely I’ll get an accurate answer here than at the Athletic, so..
Out of curiosity, was Messier a sometimes center even in 81-82 when he scored 50?
My impression is that he was mostly or fully a winger at that point, but I really have no idea when the transition to C happened since I was a small child at that point.
I thought his move to centre was for the 83-84 playoffs, and he was a full time left wing during his 50 goal season. Mr. McCurdy?
He was a centre in junior, but as a pro he played mostly LW right up to the 1983-84 season. I believe he made the move into the middle on 1984 Feb 15, same day Gretzky returned from injury, & suddenly the Oilers had a 1-2 punch down the middle for the ages.
Up ‘til then the Oilers had run with a line of Messier-Linseman-Anderson, & before that Messier-Hagman-Anderson. (I list centres in the middle where they belong. 🙂
Messier was first-team All Star LW in both ‘81-82 & ‘82-83 & second team at the same position in ‘83-84 despite the late-season switch Visionary move by Sather to move the best left wing in the game to a different position. Linseman got demoted to the bottom 6, scored 10 goals in the playoffs including 3 series winners, then was traded that summer… for a LW (Mike Krushelnyski).
Glen Sather was pretty damn sharp.
Lions game just starting, right now!
Impressions from the Bake: FWIW, my 3 stars were Griffith, Broberg and Caggiula. (My friend picked Griffith, Broberg and Gleason). Rodrigue was solid. Savoie and Lavoie both looked pretty good. Bourgault was quiet in the first two periods, but played well in the third. Lowetidians will be pleased that Chaulk gave the ‘yutes’ lots of ice time, especially in the third.
Having spent a couple days in Bakersfield, I can safely say that if Kenny managed to find a trade partner for Campbell and Campbell had a choice of staying in the Bake or going to any other NHL or AHL city, Jack would definitely waive his limited NTC to leave this place.
Tell us about Bakersfield!
Lots of strip malls, old (and not in a charming way) buildings downtown and flatter than Edmonton. Definitely a few dodgy parts of town as well.
There can be only one…
Yeah- that’s the view I had when I slowed it down ( and froze it) on the PVR
The back of Mcleod’s skate looks like it’s (probably) on the vertical plane of the blue line, and the puck is (probably) over the line
It’s too close to call
But the puck doesn’t need to be over the line, just on the line, right? That makes this less of a close call.
Nope, the leading edge of the blueline is the actual line for offside calls. The back edge comes into play after the puck is in the zone.
How can you not enjoy this run?
Goals from the 3rd and 4th lines.
Skinner excellent – again.
Stifling PK.
Responsible defending of a 3rd period 1 goal lead, while still generating chances.
Classic Zach effort with the shot block then balls out to earn the EN.
Brown is playing well, Kane is getting back to normal, and Gagner and Holloway added to the emergence of Foegele and McLeod is a joy
Next team up to the plate:
CBJ – Johnny Hockey’s team featuring their sparkling 5 9 5 road record.
Although they scream mediocre – Columbus has been sputtering along at roughly a 45% pace recently.
Who knows perhaps they make this their SC Final, like Calgary just did.
I think we lost to them both times last year. Didn’t they have that quick 4 goal lead off the opening whistle and then we came back but lost in the end?
CBJ have surprisingly been beating the oilers the last couple seasons while being extreme underdogs. Don’t underestimate them at all.
Korpisalo stole those games which is why LA picked him up at the deadline in a desperate move to find the magic playoff juice against Edmonton.
This is getting really fun. Lots to love about this team right now.
I’m loving that Samwise is able to see some real success with an Oilers team. The guy never was as good as we hoped, but he’s had a long career and keeps finding a way to stick around.
Defense, goaltending and depth are carrying us right now. If that keeps going and we can get McDrai and the powerplay going in the playoffs, I think we can do some real damage.
By the time we lost to the sharks, I was pretty sure we were out of it (as did many others). The only way to claw into the playoffs was to mature and become a team, not a bunch of individuals with flashy stats. The early season adversity and losses in the past couple playoffs might be just the thing to make this team into a real contender.
13 Game winning streak! GO OILERS GO!!!
Unfortunately the OOT scoreboard tonight turning out to be a dogs breakfast. Unless the Rags can pop a couple in the next few minutes, all three of Van, Vegas, and LA will have won tonight. So Oilers just holding steady in the standings.
Relax.
Oilers scoring 2 points every time for the past 13 games makes them an unstoppable force.
And they’re playing as well as any team in the NHL right now.
4 points on CGY tho. obv.
And Nashville lost.
Hrudey flustered now he’s pimping Monahan for the Masterson before Elliotte can get Sam out of his mouth.
No player with more than 1 pt tonight. 8 players with 1 pt.
Did Karri and Huberdough play tonight for the best 3rd period team in the NHL? 😂🏒
Lindholm was just as invisible. They,be got defense and goaltending, but you’re not going anywhere when your most productive forward is Coleman.
I feel like the team has taken on persona of coach KK. Calm. No matter what happens in game, they seem to be so chill.
not too high or too low.
Love Samwise!! Such a great guy and significant addition in bottom 6. Significant.
He looks rejuvenated this season. I’m ecstatic to see him exceed my expectations.
He’s healthy he’s been playing in pain for years.
Gagner can still score. He’s a superstar 4th liner.
With the win, the Oilers have surpassed LT’s January points prediction. And still three games to go.
13 straight wins and the PP has struggled throughout the streak (a couple of games it scored a few but, overall, well below its norm).
That’s good. Last season watching their dazzling powerplay, knowing that playoffs were going to be the death of them.
Powerplays are terrific, but you live by the powerplay, and you die by the powerplay.
5 on 5 is the way to go.
Some definite slop out there after the first period (which was just dominant) and a fluke goal won it but the Oilers were the best team in each period to my eye and by the NST numbers.
Skinner was solid but the defence made some big blocks in the 3rd.
Agreed, the Oilers were the better team throughout the game — and that reflected by both the fancy stats and the eye test.
That the Oilers play has been sustainable throughout this streak is amazing.
They could actually improve as the PP will likely get better and they’re a little shy compared to their xGF.
Just crazy.
Oilers now playing at 130 points/82 games pace under Knobby and Coffey.
Spectacular!
16 goals allowed in their last 12 games.
Skinner is a starter.
And this defense is for real.
Not a chance they’re looking to trade Ceci.
It was Nurse who looked a bit shakey tonight. Ceci was heavy on that puck along the boards and didn’t get caught out of position. That’s all one could ask of him…
epidermis stu
they bend but they do not break
extinguish the flames
Getting better!
McLeod with the jets
Samwise scores a fluky goal
Zach eludes all Falmes
McLeod marvelous
Samwise serendipitous
Hyman heroic
Someone needs to tell P.K the troll that’s 11 games with 2 goals or less against.
He truly is a clown. Obviously he hasn’t watched this team the past couple of months.
Fireworks indeed.
Klapa had 6 mins of ice time and a 23 CF%
Coronato had less than 13 mins and a 40 CF%
Keep on prognosticating, how’s LA doing?
https://lowetide.ca/2024/01/20/2023-24-game-42-oilers-at-flames/#comment-1260593
I thought this game might be rougher but there was too much at stake to take stupid penalties. The right team prevailed!
To be fair, HH has to keep abreast of the entire NHL. The rest of us merely get along with Oilers plus the odd other team.
That’s how he always is able to come up with such a compelling case for Carolina, Detroit, LAK, and soon to be Vancouver.
Soon we shall be getting updates on Roy on Long Island lol
Reminds me of when he hyped up Brandt Clarke who would immediately anchor the Kings 2nd pairing this season and be a Calder candidate on his way to a Norris.
Final score. Bakersfield 7, Calgary 3. Rodrigue 25 saves on 28 shots.
Is that now 11 in a row with 2 or less goals against?
What do we tell PK?
PK is so out to lunch. He is just trying to create some clickbait. He’s clearly not watching this team right now. Totally clueless.
Watching Drai hustle back a few times tonight is more evidence of buy in to working hard at both ends.. throughout lineup.
I’m not usually critical of broadcasters, but surely they realize that 4 pts (now 6) with 4 games in hand is not even in the same ballpark…
Holloway played 9:58 – all at evens – 5 forwards, including McLeod (who was great) played less at 5 on 5 (Brown and McLeod played more overall).
Ya, I’m liking how this coach thinks. Frankly liking our (rookie) coach more every game.
But truth be told, Holloway was earning the time & the trust. Hope he can stay healthy.
No Drai points, no McDavid points, but still get two points. Oh what a feeling!
And Bouchard the only RD held off the scoresheet.
I love the end of game toi distribution.
Holloway with basically 10 minutes at evens. Awesome.
The 4th line didn’t see the ice for the last 8 shifts, but I’m totally okay with that.
WOOOOOT!
WHERE’S THAT HH GUY!? THAT’S RIGHT! SHUTTING UP THE HATERS!
GOILERS!!! HISTORIC RUN!
Eat $hit Calgree!!!!!
You plugs!
They absolutely had a nightmare creating chances at 5on5. Oilers had little problem.
Those Ekholm chances were interesting. The fwd defends Bouchard high to prevent him from launching bombs so there’s a big gap and lane for Ekholm to sneak in. If he cashes on a few of those, defences won’t know what to do with this line.
Skinner ties Fuhr’s club record 10 game win streak for an Oiler netminder
Bottom six in the first two periods and Ceci/Drai in the 3rd period.
Fantastic game for Dylan Holloway
I’ve had a beer.
Think I’ll have another
Ice Sage for mayor!
But Flames are the best 3 rd period team in the league…..
I think Jay Z said it best.
On to the next one, on to the next one..
I’m not even sure what to say, I can’t believe they’re still winning.
Damn impressed though!!
Huzzah!
Baker’s dozen!
We’re going baking!!!!!
That Hyman goal was great. Legitimately great.
I’m surprised they didn’t call for the goal to be reviewed.
With his luck they would have called him for goalie interference on his EN goal ..
Holy gord what an exciting EN. My man Hyman!!
Hyman vs. 6 flames.
Victory, Hyman.
13
Great job Andersson, great job – he was awful tonight – I thought he was becoming a solid low end 1RD but he’s regressed and I’m here for it!
He went backwards after trying to end Laine career for no reason. Don’t tell Hrudey but Andersson has a loose screw.
Beauty ENG by Hyman.
ANOTHER big win!!
Review that zebras!
Zach is a tank
Hyman ices the game. Lookedlike a cheap shot after he scored the wraparound
Definitely on replay
What an empty net goal by Hyman and i think that extends McDavid’s point streak.
Dagger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Suck it Flames!
Hyman gets the job done
Done
Congrats to Seth Griffith for becoming the Condors all-time point leader (and then extending).
Connor Breadbasket will never score again.
