Stuart Skinner had another strong night in goal for the Edmonton Oilers, and led the effort that resulted in the team’s fourteenth win in a row. My favourite part of the game, and there were several, involved the absolute sellout at the end to make sure the CBJ scored just once. It’s a team game, and sometimes one part of the roster comes out flat. It was such a night for Edmonton’s blue. They played guilty, blocking shots and working on the double to recover from errant passes. Edmonton can’t play that game again and continue the streak. Did they get scared straight last night?

This run is starting to remind me of the Philadelphia Flyers after acquiring the rights to Bernie Parent from the Toronto Maple Leafs in May of 1973. They had been building for a couple of years under coach Fred Shero, but the Parent re-acquisition sealed it. ‘Parent moment’ events I can see: the acquisition of Mattias Ekholm, plus Kris Knoblauch, Paul Coffey and Mark Stuart. I think it’s a collective, though. I don’t think the Oilers had a Ryan McLeod or Warren Foegele in previous seasons, a set six on defense like this season, a goaltender like Skinner since Cam Talbot.
This team seems capable of overcoming difficulty during the second-period intermission. Helluva run, folks. Helluva run.
THE NUMBERS
If Stuart Skinner didn’t exist, they would have had to invent him. All the things written about Edmonton’s poor drafting, and Skinner rarely gets a mention. For the record, they liked him so much a trade up was necessary. I believe Bob Green was behind the push, doubt we’ll ever know for sure. The nature of humanity is to hammer the negative senseless and gloss over the positive. Stuart Skinner is genuine. In his most recent 20 games, he owns a .933 save percentage in all strengths (via Natural Stat Trick) and that’s second in the entire NHL. No one should ever ever overlook the importance of Skinner to this team.
I didn’t like the defense last night. Lots of good plays without the puck, brought on by poor plays with it. Everyone has a bad day, and the club has been exceptional defensively through this run. Cody Ceci was having a tough time but he was not alone. I loved the balls out, sell out play by the flat six on defense, though.
It’s time to have a chat about Warren Foegele and Ryan McLeod. These two men are delivering the goods offensively, and if they can help lift Dylan Holloway this roster could be humming by April. Here are the current five-on-five pts-60 totals for Edmonton’s regular forwards, and where each ranks across the NHL among league forwards. First line forwards are 1-96, second line 97-192 et cetera. There are 384 regular forwards in the NHL this season, the exact number who have played 250+ minutes. Rankings are overall, NA means the player hasn’t played 250 minutes.
- Connor McDavid 2.88 (No. 5) (first line)
- Warren Foegele 2.78 (No. 13) (first line)
- Sam Gagner 2.71 NA
- Zach Hyman 2.67 (No. 22) (first line)
- Leon Draisaitl 2.54 (No. 32) (first line)
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 2.01 (No. 113) (second line)
- Ryan McLeod 1.95 (No. 125) (second line)
- Evander Kane 1.86 (No. 140) (second line)
- Dylan Holloway 1.06 NA
- Mattias Janmark 1.06 (No. 328) (fourth line)
- Derek Ryan 0.96 (No. 339) (fourth line)
- James Hamblin 0.75 NA
- Adam Erne 0.70 NA
- Connor Brown 0.59 (No. 376) (fourth line)
- Raphael Lavoie 0.00 NA
So, the Oilers have four (five with Gagner) first-line forwards in terms of production, plus three second-line players. That’s very good. What Dylan Holloway and Corey Perry might be able to do is slide in and produce enough for the Oilers to optimize depth minutes ala Sam Gagner. It is not an easy role, but will be important in the postseason when the top lines are being suppressed by brilliant two-way lines.
I like what is happening here. Ken Holland has been to hell and back with this Oilers team, same as the fans. He has made mistakes, many of them loud noises and memorable losses. However, credit where due. He kept his powder dry on players like Skinner and McLeod, he acquired Foegele (who is filling an important role), Ekholm, Hyman and Kane.
I think Holland deserves accolades for not making a panic move back in November. I think he has earned credit for making the coach switch. I expect he won’t get it from many places, and the criticism was warranted in many areas of procurement, but Holland’s team looks very, very good today.

Yawn.
This is an Edmonton Oilers blog, on behalf of my fellow fanatics Wayne Gretzky says “hold my beer”, Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl then take turns doing the same.
Chasing points is so ‘23. HH is a half step behind, must have zoned out during the recent 2 month run where Edmonton lost 3 games.
Can we get an update on the kings though? I’m sure Danault and co feasted on the perpetually terrible Sabres.
I wanna hear more about how the Kings depth is so much better than the Oilers.

Awful and lazy defensive zone play after a Condors PP – lackadaisical with full possession and no pressure and they have it away on the exit – a soft shot is mishandled by Rodrigue for a bad rebound and its 3-2 SJ.
San Jose tie it up with 2 PP goals.
First on a long 5 on 3 – rebound and scramble for the open net.
Then, on the ensuring 5 on 4, one is ripped home high from the circles – Rodrigue was screened.
A bad penalty by Hamblin on the PK has big effect
Interestingly enough, this season James Hamblin has 31 NHL games to his credit and 0 PIMs.
Zach Hyman farted
Like a quiet goal siren

Condors’ first goal was a beauty.
Defensive zone draw is lost, Petrov and Savoie both pressure the point and Petrov makes the seal for the 2 on 1 – pass over to Savoie who dekes backhand for the 1-0.
Can’t say too much about the second goal as classic Baracuda arena camera work had the camera off the play for 4 second as the Condors rush up the ice but Tulio buried a net front path.
Rodrigue with 15 solid stops (a few high danger) in the first.
2-0.

Looking at their next 14 games, they could realistically go 10-2-2 and maybe even better.
Their worst part could a be a 4-2-2 stretch in the middle of the next 14.
Game. #PTS%Rank OPPONENT(@ means road game) – Expected Result
That’s a 16 game win streak and a 21-game point streak.
I hate to point it out, but it doesn’t bode well for a Stanley Cup. Very few teams with lengthy regular season win or points streaks won the Cup that season. Islanders did it with a 15 game win streak in 1982 and Chicago won with a 24 game point streak in 2013. That’s it.
🙁
The Oilers have always broken the mold
How many of those teams also started 2-9-1 and didn’t give themselves much of a choice?

Looked a lot like a team closing in on a loss last night but so far Knoblauch has found the right buttons and is showing some serious fingerspitzengefühl with his in game moves. Early goings and it’s easier to look smart when the team is rolling but it certainly looks like we have a proper match coach on our hands.
Still, they are wobbling a bit lately, not the same sharp focus we saw a few games ago, which is understandable. Chicago are bad enough that they should be able to beat them even with a 20 minute effort and then hopefully they can find some extra motivation going into the Nashville game as it’s not only a chance to prolong the streak but also to have a full month worth of wins, plus it’s the last game before the break and according to reports Perry’s first game.
And Draisaitl will likely be on the ice. He’s Arnold vs the Preds.
The Chicago game feels like a typical streak buster though, the game you’ve won before it’s started but instead bites you in the ass.
And the Hawks have been surprisingly resilient, a hard out
Is that a Swedish word?
Fingerspitzengefühl? It’s german but it’s used in swedish sports to describe coaches with that extra tactical touch.

He won’t win it, but if Skinner save % climbs up a bit more and the GAA goes down a bit more, he will get some Vezina votes.

also would be tempted to get them to throw in AHL dman phillipe myers too, see what he can do as a black ace in practice and sign him to a cheap and cheerful contract extension as vinny insurance in case vinny chases the bag as a UFA.
Myers is +20 in the ahl and is 6 ft 6, 220 lbs and is a far better skater / much more mobile than vinny. He is age 26 and we know big guys take longer to settle down. Coffey is the D whisperer after all.
Will be interesting to see who gets the net for the Condors tonight. Both rested, both playing well and team rolling.
They play W, F, S so whoever starts today gets 2 out of the 3 (presumably) and Jack got the last start.
Rodrigue gets the start.
