Bottom line, the entire sport is built around the Stanley Cup. When it comes to romancing a sport, baseball’s poetry and prose has no equal. The one thing that hockey owns is the power of its championship and the trophy given. The history of the game is written in the names that have adorned the Stanley. It’s for all time. It can never be taken away. It rewards all men who reach the peak of the game equally and allows no intruders (sorry, Basil).
You have to earn it. That means blood, sweat and tears, gashes and pulled muscles, bruises and broken bones. Winning Stanley is a career achievement of the highest order, not winning Stanley is the cruelest cut of all.
On the day Edmonton reaches a game where elimination is possible, I always reflect on the men who may not pass this way again. You know, Evander Kane turns 33 in August, he has never won a Stanley. Derek Ryan is 37, Samwise 35 and he’s barely played in a postseason game during a long career.
I think of a player like Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 31 now and he’s been to hell and back again. Surely winning the Stanley Cup at this age would represent justice for the 50,000 miles of bad road traveled with poor teams in his early years. Stanley isn’t about justice, not really, in fact luck is a major factor in winning the damn thing.
TONIGHT
The Oilers were humbled in Game 5, unable to create the play to win the game after the unfortunate second goal allowed. I expected Connor McDavid to set his jaw, say to hell with the noise, and score the winner. Perhaps that comes tonight.
I will watch with interest the moves of Kris Knoblauch this evening. He had so many correct tweaks before Game 4 I called it a Scotty Bowman night. Man, everything he touched was a winner. Music!
I think Game 5 was a different animal and don’t put the blame on the coach. Evan Bouchard’s misstep was unfortunate, but just like 1986 after the Steve Smith own-goal, Edmonton had plenty of time to make up for it.
I think the coach was correct in running his PP men heavy in Game 5. The group is his magic wand, he needed a goal. I’d do the same.
I’m not sure about the starter tonight. I’m a Stuart Skinner fan, and the possible storyline (redemption!) is too good to resist. Still, I think it’s fair to say that Calvin Pickard has given his team a chance to win during his time in net and that’s the job.
Everyone has an idea about how to tweak the roster, I don’t really have much to add. I do think that Connor Brown and Mattias Janmark are showing up in good places on the video, maybe that’s an area that can be utilized.
The pre-game story is pretty clear: Since he arrived in town, the Oilers success comes when they get good goaltending and Connor McDavid makes things happen, often with Leon Draisaitl in a starring role. Perhaps Evan Bouchard will serve as hero, he has been a pivotal player in this series.
It feels far too early to contemplate the end of the season, but we are here. Ain’t it funny how time slips away. I wish Adam Henrique was healthy.
KEN HOLLAND
All kinds of rumours about Holland going to Columbus and I think it’s hilarious. All of the “well, he’s probably not interested in doing the job past this season” and “no way he’s employable” chatter and the guy walks into a new job. Sports is gonna sport.
My hope for new general manager is Eric Tulsky. He’s done the work, built the resume and the Carolina Hurricanes are well stocked and ready to push for Stanley over the rest of the decade. The Hurricanes are one of the teams that could easily push for Leon Draisaitl and have placed themselves in position to do so, this summer (trade) or next (free agency).
That’s the path Edmonton should take in my opinion. Grabbing Tulsky and Brett Pesce this summer from the land of the Hickory Wind would be a grand play in my opinion.
The only thing missing in last night’s game was Evander Kane flashing 7 fingers after scoring.
Canucks Twitter is a wasteland. Absolutely nothing to learn from this fanbase. Today the paranoia is fed by an espn.com bracket error that has Edmonton advancing. A screenshot is circulating like wildfire, more proof the league has orchestrated —despite no outward evidence— a conspiracy where Edmonton advances.
I don’t know if Edmonton wins Game 7. But holy hell will I be cheering for Edmonton as much as I cheer against Vancouver. Vanquish these clowns. Let them have their paranoia — or whatever framework they need to understand their repeated failures. They sure had the white flag out last night. Losers.
Caught part of the game here in Sydney Australia today. I get back to Canada just in time for puck drop on Monday. Can’t wait, for the game at least.

My prediction: If the Oilers score 5 or more goals, they will win.
Called it! 😀😀😀😀
G6 SCF 2006 vibes.
Visiting team throwing the towel in early to regroup for G7.
This is the next (weird historical narrative) hurdle… but I believe!
Had to miss the game tonight due to work….but, after watching the highlights on NHL.Com. “Holloway goes alltheway” Loved it! American announcer. Not sure who…
This was, understandably, my son’s favourite playoff game in attendance!
The Canucks did a good job in the first of sucking the life out of the building with their boring play, hard for either team to get anything going.
I still think the end period 1 goal should not have been interference but credit to the boys for churning out a dominant 2 periods. Top 2 lines and all 6 D came to play.
PK came up huge end of 2nd when it was still a game, RNH was huge there! Number. 1 for both PP and PK%
Looking at the recap, the TNT announcer going “Holloway, all the way” was epic
Chris Berman: He could go Holl-o-way!

Game 7 seven. It should not be any other way 🙂
LT says enjoy the ride, Ride enjoyed !!
place was rocking tonight.
LETS GO OILERS!!!
Evander Kane tonight: 1 goal, +2, 4 SOG, 7 Hits, zero BS tolerated.
Me likey.
Thanks Kert.
This is brilliant
Nothing but respect for Vancouver.
Game seven is going to be douzer.
Not sure about ‘nothing but respect’. Some respect, sure. Nothing but? Definitely no. After calling the league (not the Oilers) out for embellishment it’s pretty obvious what the play was.
McDavid: 21 minutes
Leon: 17:30
Ekholm: 15:24
Ceci and Deharnias 2nd/3rd among d-men in total TOI (Bouchard 1, of course).
Those are pretty balanced numbers. Hope Ekholm feels better soon. He was noticeably slower tonight. Impressive to push through when obviously feeling so rotten!
Stu sounding so much more confident!
Stu with an absolutely massive blocker save on the pk at end of second that might have really changed complexion of game. Hope that gives him confidence and team.. as they play better in front of him. No lucky ones for Van tonight
Shout out to Skinner for rock’n a .933 tonight! Only 7 HDCA and Stu did his job. Well done.
Ha! Stu doing his end of game cele with Vinny by himself with Vinny kicked out is great
Skinner seemed to settle down as the game went on. Having him on his game would be a huge addition in Game 7.
I thought Skins was ready for the odd angle shots. The games off gave him a chance to adjust and he’s was ready. No ridiculous goals this game to kill momentum!
History says it was the right choice to go back to Skinner but I didn’t feel confident pregame. Even tonight he just seems a bit floppy. Gets up and isn’t square to the action in my eyes. I do want him to succeed and the evidence over 82 is there, but I did not see Skinner good tonight.
Other than a bunch of fancy hair flips in warm up I didn’t notice Miller tonight
I saw the embellishment on the call against Ryan.
There was an abundant number of Canuck divers tonight, all looking for a cheap penalty call. Sickening.
Tochet confirm that Demko will not play game 7.
Wonder I& they go to DeSmith to give the Oilers a different look.
Really liked how our forwards pressured their d up high in our zone. Better way to defend as most of their goals in series have come from point shots
Evan Bouchard now with the best +\- in the playoffs at +10
Two ahead of Tanev, twelve better than Heiskanen who’s -2
1-2-3 +4 22.25 minutes. What a game!
He also leads all dmen in goals, assists and points.
Don’t tell Harper’s hair, his two golden boys.
Facts only matter when it makes you right.
Ek only 15:24 TOI – lowest among D. As someone noted below, he looked really slow tonight. Hope he’s feeling a lot better in 48 hours.
Great win! Rest up, heal up, get healthy for the next one!
Nice win for Stewie.
Winning in that manner was important heading back to Vancouver for game 7.
A seed of doubt has been planted in the Canucks minds:
“What if their power play adapts again, as it always has?”
“What if they’ve just been playing through a slump this whole series and have broken out of it?”
“What if we are actually a bunch of losers playing for a loser organization that has never won anything?”
Good work Oilers. Now execute on Monday.
First time this series that the team scoring first won the game.
Not true. Oilers scored first in game 4. You know, the one where Bouch scored the GWG with like 30sec left?
Right you are. Thanks.
Dawson Who?
I’m a Holloway fan and, he brings more elements to the game than Mercer and could surpass him if he continues to have the game slow down for him but Mercer has 7 points in 12 playoff games himself.
The kid can play.

We are an ATTACKING TEAM!!!
Game seven and the stuff of Dreams coming up!!!
La Bamba!!!!!
My mind’s eye had 6-1 with an EN
I’ll settle
So happy!!
gotta win two in a row.
Suffice to say we saw the Supers have a bad game the other night.
Elevated when it mattered most.
Stu seemed to calm down in the 3rd.
What a fun series. Nerve wracking but fun.

La Bamba.
Alright, off to game 7.
Strong game for the Oilers.
No team has won 2 in a row this series, Oilers need to break that on Monday.
Please and thank you.
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot
see you Monday
Carrick has been good in his role tonight.
Well my prediction of Oilers in 4, 5, or 6 games did not pan out. Feel good about predicting Oilers in 7.
Mr. Kane might have finally woke up.
You mean now or games ago?
Kane has been good throughout the playoffs.
Wasn’t snapping that shot on at 86mph though.
He’s not supposed to be good – he’s supposed to be ‘take over a game per series’ good.
Kane has been up and down these playoffs. Tonight he looked like the Kane of old.
Highlander’s stick disintegrates on his best chance of breaking his goose egg all postseason. Don’t know what he did to anger the hockey gods but sacrificing a live chicken couldn’t hurt.
Get him a bucket of KFC already
Why the f__k is Connor out with five minutes left in a 5-1 game?
Love it when Kane is a wrecking ball!!
Time to get the 3rd and 4th lines out and go for big hits.
Hurt them.
BOOM!!! Kaner with the lazer!!!
Play the bottom six!!!
In the middle of a serenade!
Kaner!!! No more shifts for the fab 5.
Suck it Zadorov!
Cool, Kane finds the net. More insurance is still important.
Pour it on
Kane!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A face off goal. How novel!
Finally 5 on the board.
Holloway with a beauty tie up and screen.
Kaner!
little early to be playing la bamba into the break. i’m not superstitious, but kinda of a classless move by sportsnet.
Like they were trying to hex the Oilers.
Not cool.
Des out there a long time. Held on, no mistakes, get the change.
