Ziggy watched Game 1 with some concern, and feels the Oilers should cut down on the mistakes. She does think the team is good enough to outscore the errors, but also believes a two-pronged attack of “outscore” and “don’t let them score” is the best plan of action. She was also about to say something about injuries, but a bird flew by and she took off like a bat out of hell. Ziggy, who has been with us for well over a decade, has never caught a bird nor a rabbit. She’s the Switzerland of dogs.
Do you think the Oilers can win tonight?
Yes. If the team plays the same style as Game 1, it’s possible. We know the Stars will bring more in this game, and Roope Hintz could play (likely to play) in a game that’s more important to Dallas because of the opening loss. However, the Oilers have ironed most of the unforced errors out of their game, and don’t wobble when bad things happen. This team has the look of a mature club ready to win. In my opinion.
Should Kris Knoblauch insert Adam Henrique and toy with a winning lineup?
Henrique’s skill set is appreciably more than the player he’d replace, so yes. There are thousands of traditional worries that get mentioned this time of year, but logic and reason should win the day. I see Henrique as another Nuge, a player with great utility who can play up and down the line.
Holland screwed up at the deadline.
I didn’t agree at the time and don’t agree now. Henrique is a strong addition to this team, injury aside. Sam Carrick hasn’t played much but is useful and I think he’s earned the starts he is getting currently. I know it’s popular to hammer the GM, and there are things on his resume that stand out in the extreme negative, but since Brad Holland arrived (Zach Hyman and everything after) it’s my belief the team has delivered impressive procurement results.
What proof do you have?
The Oilers are up 1-0 in the conference finals.
Because of McDavid and Draisiatl and Bouchard. All of those players were already Oilers before Holland arrived.
I’ll list Hyman, Henrique, Mattias Ekholm, Evander Kane, Cody Ceci, Brett Kulak, Corey Perry and there are others. Holland’s style is not my preferred approach, but that’s kind of the fun of it. I would have had Evan Bouchard in the lineup as a regular long before he got the chance. I would have stayed the course with Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones. I was all-in on Kailer Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi.
Is this your resume? Because it sucks.
No, it’s a list of my past bets that didn’t work out. Holland’s trade for Duncan Keith cost way too much, Edmonton should have received a first-round pick in order to establish value. Trading for, then walking, Andreas Athanasiou, looks terrible although it was the right thing to do (walking him) due to the salary cap stagnating because of the pandemic. The Zack Kassian contract, signed just before the pandemic, was also unwise in any situation. Those things are true.
So you agree, Holland should have been fired long ago.
It’s also true that he acquired Hyman, Ekholm and others. The entire resume must be viewed, good and bad. I think that’s fair.
What exactly are you saying?
I’m saying that Brad Holland’s arrival coincided with an uptick in procurement on the pro side. I’m saying that Jeff Jackson’s arrival signaled a more aggressive (firing Jay Woodcroft, sending Jack Campbell to Bakersfield Condors) approach to roster fixes.
What exactly are you saying?
Evaluating Holland’s run in Edmonton will be easy if the Oilers don’t win a Stanley this spring. It will represent another GM who didn’t get it done with ‘gut feel’ and represent a clear indication that the team needs badly to modernize hockey ops.
And so?
And so, I think, based on recent events, they’re already there.
— McDrai playing way too many minutes. 5-6 more than Stars best
— over 7 games that’s not sustainable…
Sid
@NHL_Sid
Edmonton’s third line has now been out-scored 1 to 6 in the playoffs thus far (14% goal differential).

Woodguy
@Woodguy55
EDM had looked just gassed in the 3rd
9th game in 18 days.
Rust vs. Rest always turns to rest.
You’ve posted this multiple times in this thread.
I know math is hard, so hopefully this will help
Dallas went 7 games against Vegas
Oilers played 5 vs LA.
Dallas went 6 against Col
Oilers played 7 vs Van.
Stars have played 1 more playoff game
Series is 1-1
The only rust I see is your schtick
Dallas got 3 extra days rest before this series started.
It’s a big damn deal.
Fatigue could be a factor. McDavid is skating like a mere mortal, so I’m hoping it’s just fatigue.
Still something didn’t rhyme in the offensive zone. They couldn’t make passes or get shots on net. Dallas had very active sticks taking away the east west passing lanes.
I think Deboer made a systems change and Knoblauch was too slow to react.
I look forward to the Curlock report.
The biggest systems change was Dallas having a man high in the defensive zone ready to take off.
Not only does that put pressure on the Oilers D in the zone but it makes puck retrieval paramount.

I think DeBoer has figured out that pressuring the Oilers D is the way to victory.
Not coincidental that Nurse -10, Desharnais -7 and Ceci -6 are top contenders for the playoff green jacket.
I know no one cares about plus/minus (it’s a team stat) but this is actually interesting and worse than the eye test would indicate. Comparing all players +/- of the final four, EDM is the extreme outlier here.
Plus/minus doesn’t tell you much but it does tell you something.
I suspect DeBoer has spotted a critical weakness and is trying to exploit it.
Weakness, probably for sure… I think we all see this. Calling it a ‘critical weakness that DeBoer has spotted’, I mean, sure. He’s found the teams weakest defensive paring and is trying to exploit it. What coach isn’t doing that?. You suspect a lot of things. “Pressuring the d”, is like every coaches plan to victory.
The worst plus/minus among Dallas D is 0
Two of the Oilers D pairings are underwater.
I thought that was a really good game from the Oilers, minus some lack of finishing. The puck was bouncing a lot — seemingly more so for the Oilers — which caused some issues in terms of finishing and/or being able to get the shot away in time.
Nuge made a pass down low to Hyman at one point — I would have loved to have seen him pick a corner and rip it instead.
Nurse has been on for some GA but IMO none of them have been his fault. More importantly, I believe he is moving the puck *much* better. I saw him make a couple nice, on the ice bounce passes off the boards. More please.
Draisaitl was terrific. 97 getting there, still not 100% through the neutral zone. Still hesitating to shoot at times, even when he does decide to shoot it feels like he really doesn’t want to. Hopefully whatever ails him is getting better.
Getting Henrique back, at or near 100%, is going to help that third line. And I trust that Knoblauch will get some favourable matchups at home.
Oilers seem pretty proud of their performance tonight. Not sure if it’s confidence or ignorance. There’s a pretty fine line between those two.
it is Maturity ….
If you told me before the series started the Oilers would be going home with the split, I’d have said; “Amazing!” especially considering the verbal from the talking heads.
But they are taking home sometime just as important as the split,
Belief & Confidence
Oilers are every bit as good as the Stars & in some areas, better.
Skinner has found his game & the bottom 6 are contributing.
Bottom line
It’s a great spot to be in & that is F¥cking Fantastic
Yes, agree with all of this
It’s a tough loss, but I’ll take a split all day every day
They ran out of gas but I think we match up well against them
I like our chances
Knoblauch calling out the refs and the league in a politically correct way after a long pause. What a beauty
Load them up ….keep doing it
Kane seems to stand the entire game on the bench. He doesn’t appear to sit down.
So?
With his injury, sitting and standing up must cause some discomfort.
He doesn’t want you to think he’s tired or not trying
Dominate game.
Coach gets credit from Simpson
Loads up McDrai in 3rd.
Wow.
Plumbers record only goal of game
Soooooo Coach K with a pretty epic fart on that goalie pull eh?
Why would you signal to him in the middle
of a line change when Dallas had three guys back?
Id take McLeod out for a game. Give him the Stu treatment. He’s clearly fighting it all
over the ice and he’s a black hole on the Dallas side of the redline. He’ll benefit from a rest.
Kane came up short
McDavid getting more speed, but still not enough to beat the D
Dallas D were allowed to do their thing, they don’t want to play physical and Oilers didn’t hit them hard. And that high man is completely new look for Oilers to play against, it really spreads out the ice.
Skinner first goal a bit weak, but big saves thereafter.
Oilers looking for perfect goal again, we’re not in front of goalie for their own lucky bounce.
Couldn’t disagree more. Benn with a perfect shot. Looked pass and low blocker quick release. Skinner not at fault on either goal. Boys played hard. Dallas a great team and playing more desperate. Oilers had so many shots blocked and passes. This is Dallas’ strength. Oil also coming off a g 7 game series. The difference was minimal all considered and could have gone our way just as easily.
Stu should stop a wrist shot above the circles all day
We are a more physical team than Dallas. If we don’t start being aggressive and punishing them, finishing our checks, we aren’t going to win this series. We have to play to our strengths. It’s as simple as that.
I much prefer the game when the oilers are tied or up a goal. The way Dallas plays with the lead makes me think they won’t give it up too often.
Well, 1-1 out of Dallas isn’t bad, especially since the Oilers were competitive both games. Much better than I expected.
According to expected goals, Oilers should have been up 2-0 after the first, and won 3-2.
But Dallas is a good team, and the Oilers will have to keep their focus and drive at 100%. They’ll have to play better than they did during the third period.
…
.
Lol. And this might’ve been the easiest prediction of the night
Rest came home to roost early in the second period.
Rust is gone now.
Hey Foghorn Leghorn It’s called adjustments , Knobs will have his response ready for game 3.
I still don’t agree that the last two periods of this game were more important that the first game.
Maybe you should re-read those posts again. You don’t seem too clear on their meaning.
Zero shame in that effort. One goal off Des pants the difference.
Looked like a nice tip by Marchment to me.
Not a bad game, Oilers. Had a lot of good chances and pressure. Sometimes it doesn’t work out.
Dominant in the first, even in the second, faded in the third. I think if they come out of the first with 2 goals it would’ve been a very different game
Not enough sustained pressure, the Stars had more. You could see the lead up to the second goal they were pressing successfully we need more of that. Passes seemed off more tonight, wonder if it’s fatigue or the ice. Either way looking for a better game 3.
Disapointing result tonight – needed to cash more in the first.
Two good hockey game in Dallas.
Either team could have won either.
Oilers going home for two where they’ve been dominant for a long time.
Gotta be Derek Ryan out for Henrique – he was poor tonight, barely played on their PK and, well, is old so a rest is always good, right?
I agree. I have lots of time for Ryan, but he was not good. Obvious candidate for replacement IMO.
Need to get the Curlock report.
The Oilers soundly outplayed the Stars in the first. Gave up the better chances against in the second.
By the third, something was broken on the coaching side of things.
We definitely got Deboered in the 3rd period.
Didn’t you notice all the Stars stretch passes in the last two periods?
DeBoer has changed things up.
I posted earlier Ryan out for Henrique. Ryan was weak tonight and is having trouble keeping up. Also, Henrique can be the scoring threat on that line.
Another perfect game by rhe Stars for infractions! Such BS. Make the penalty differential look better when the game is done. Classic NHL
What were the two power plays for again? What were the infractions? Honest question. Couldn’t watch whole game.
Not the Oilers night. Needed more than 1 goal in the first period.
Refs making sure the scoresheet looks like they were actually at the game with whistles
I’d put Henrique in for one of the 3rd liners.
Henrique is a top 6 forward. Gonna be nice to have him back in the lineup for game 3
They’ll regroup and do better once they get back to Edmonton. They were in this game the entire time I think, and are evenly matched with Dallas. Just have to mitigate the senseless mistakes and inopportune decisions.
Oilers ran out of gas by halfway through the second. Dallas with the rope-a-dope tonight.
Lol now you call a penalty
Game managers gonna game-manage.
Garbage time calls are the worst, we’ve drawn one PP in two games that was of any consequence.
Not the best time to pull Skinner imo but game could have gone either way. Going home series tied.
Getting the split on the road is just fine. Oilers were in this game the whole way. Stars win on a lucky bounce.
Flush this one and win the next two at home.
What a bad pull…didn’t even have possession…
Stupid time to pull the goalie. Over two minutes left without possession and the first line not on.
Bouchard literally moved out of the way for Lindell’s shot. What was he thinking?
He was probably thinking it would be fun to make you think what he was thinking
Maybe the worst goalie pull in the history of the national hockey league. Wow
It was just dumb. Over 2 minutes left no possession. Players changing. Just bad
Why in the hell was Skinner called in?
That is so stupid
Why pull Skinner when you don’t have possession?
Just a terrible time to pull the goalie.
That’s a terrible pull
Unbelievable. Just said to my son, watch them pull the goalie without possession of the puck.
Bouchard needs to do better there but at least it was a shot attempt.
One shot
Even too many men going uncalled
Are they going to drive the puck deep at any point instead of continuing to try stopping or turning at the circle?
That play isn’t there.
Not much room out there. Dallas playing a pretty tenacious team D. Shoot it in and fore check like demons!
Maybe a timeout for now and reassess how to get the offence going?
Lay it all on the line, Guys!!!
Get it on net and drive!!!!
You worried? Who’s worried?
Time to not worry.
I’m still not worried
It’s been a hell of a long time since Dallas really gave up any chances. They seem to be knocking down everything.
Theyre playing great with a lead, still attacking when it’s there. I wish the good guys knew how to defend a lead like this. Edmonton looks a bit tired TBH
Just can’t get anything going.
Five Stars guarding the blue line and Drai tries to carry it in multiple times. smh
We deserved a lead coming out of the 1st. But since then, Dallas has had too many chances. That last Dallas goal felt like it was coming.
Dallas getting alot of good looks going low to high slot.
Terrifying flashbacks to VGK last year
McLeod line does zilch offensively and is now a liability on the GAs…
Gotta swap it up Coach K, can’t have that.
Ryan on the 4th
