This is the NHLE defense for July of 2017. The eye, assaulted by the color scheme, manages to find NHLE and sees Ethan Bear and Caleb Jones. That’s the conversation piece. Wander a little farther down the list and we see Hahvahd defender John Marino, who wasn’t getting any playing time on the PP but would emerge as exactly the player I was looking for with NHLE in summer of 2017.
A journey deeper into the list would uncover the shutdown blue, routinely under 10 pts-82GP NHLE. Do you see Vincent Desharnais right at the bottom? The problem with NHLE is the problem with the French in war: All of the cannons are inevitably pointed in the wrong direction. When it comes to evaluating young shutdown blue, look for the word “speed” and learn to be patient.
BAUER BERRY
The scouting reports on Bauer Berry resemble those of Matt Greene 20 years ago. Elite Prospects writes about Berry “is a suffocating defender with a physical style and clean retrievals. He wins body position early. If he’s given a bit of space, he picks the puck up with speed, draws pressure, and ignites the rush. A punishing down-low defensive game rounds out the core of his game.” Please click the link there is more there.
Greene’s bio was similar, I remember distinctly the words “rugged” and “speed” along with size and winning battles from the Greene scouting report. Now, it doesn’t mean one damn thing because there’s only so many ways to say rugged and speed and there’s a lot that goes into being an NHL defenseman. Additionaly, and you may not remember or have been old enough, but Greene struggled plenty before establishing himself as a bona fide NHL blue.
All of which is to say I don’t have much to tell you about Bauer Berry save for the fact that “speed” appears in his scouting reports. He’s a big man already, he has genetics on his side, and we’ll see.
Here are the men who Edmonton drafted over the years with similar circumstances. How many do you recognize? How many were worth the draft bet?
2000—D Jason Platt in the 8th round. Drafted out of Omaha (USHL) after 18-year old season. Attended college at Providence and signed with the Oilers after full four years in NCAA. Turned pro at 23, peaked with 109 AHL games.
2002—D Matt Greene in the 2nd round. Drafted out of Green Bay (USHL) after 18-year old season. Attended UND for three seasons, turned pro at 22 by signing with the Oilers. Greene would play in the SCF’s that season and enjoyed a long NHL career (615 games).
2009—D Troy Hesketh in the 3rd round. Drafted out of Minnetonka (USHS) after 17-year old season, he did not progress.
2009—D Kyle Bigos in the 4th round. Drafted out of Vernon (BCJHL) after 20-year old season, he attended Merrimack College (NCAA) for four years before turning pro at age 24 by signing with the San Jose Sharks. Peaked with eight AHL games.
2014—D William Lagesson in the 4th round. Drafted out of Frolunda (Swedish Juniors) after his 17-year old year, he played the following season in the USHL before heading to the NCAA UMass-Amherst for two years. Once turning pro he developed by sundial but has played in 100 NHL games. This blog recognizes 100 NHL games as being a draft success for a fourth-round selection, your mileage may vary.
2016—Matt Cairns in the 3rd round. Drafted out of Georgetown (OJHL), he couldn’t get into the lineup in the USHL (not a good sign) so played in the BCHL to complete his year. Played sparingly in freshman season with Cornell 2017-18. Did not sign in Edmonton. Has played in 14 AHL games since 2021.
2017—Phil Kemp in the 6th round. Another player drafted out of the U.S. National Development Program. Kemp has a defensive reputation, he was effective at Yale and has established himself in the AHL as a reliable defender. Has played in one NHL game.
2021—Luca Munzenberger in the third round. Drafted out of Cologne, Germany, he played for the University of Vermont last season. He’s a perfect example of this player-type, Munzenberger has been playing college for three years and remains mostly a mystery. He is big and can skate, so never say never.
I know some of you look at the numbers for a player like Munzenberger and draw the conclusion that he has no value. I would respectfully submit that as you track this type of prospect more and more, your view will change a little. Always remember we don’t know what we don’t know. Munzenberger’s goal differentials have improved markedly in three years, he’s still a big fellow who can scoot. Best to track him through his senior season, find the remnants and roll ends of information that come available, and then see if the organization signs him. Making an early call on this player-type is just useless. Example: Poor Vincent Desharnais on the NHLE list above. Using offensive metrics to track shutdown blue is like pissing in the wind and that’s a fact. Honestly.
NEW for @TheAthleticNHL Four late summer free-agent additions the Oilers should consider signing.
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5631996/2024/07/12/oilers-free-agents-vrana-yamamoto/
Vrana could be interesting, especially on a show me contract… but I’m not in favour of a retread like Yamamoto. I like the player and was glad he developed as an Oiler, but hope the management team will… aim higher.
For me it’s the fact he’s a replacement level player under 160 lbs, why bother?
In a perfect world, we are all loved with the same devotion that LT has for failed prospects.
Yamo, Puli, Yak. LT would welcome back all the prodigal sons. You could call them the Offense Suppression line. The problem is the offense they suppress is their own!
Yes there’s no love like that!
For the record I like all the players and wish they could all succeed how they want to
But it’s not possible and after years of waiting the team is so close to being completed I don’t want to give quarter
Agreed. Yam is skilled but cannot supply any of the things this team is missing, and any opportunities to upgrade the roster should have a focus of rounding it out.
All that’s needing improvement now is 2RD and 4C
I’m hoping they sort it out and go into the season with everything in place, and work on the process all season
Who knows maybe they can do it internally?
Maybe, if Philp really pops, I don’t think Grubbe is there yet. Given he just took a year off I wouldn’t want to put too much pressure on him though, not sure it will happen this season
At the end of this past season, Grubbe isn’t close to where Philp as at the end on the prior season.
If Philp can get back to that level, he’s all but NHL ready – who knows who long that will take, or it he can even get there – but he was very impressive in the 2nd half of that season.
Yes he was. I’m on the fence about waiting to see if he gets his game to the level it was at. I suppose there might be a 4C RS later, shouldn’t cost too much, but they need a decent one. Or two. Ones they will play late in playoffs unlike Carrick
Yamamoto makes zero sense in my opinion.
Vrana is intriguing on near league min contract, however, how does this work on the roster?
I mean, as of right now, the Oilers could get cap compliant with no trade or LTIR by signing Holloway and Broberg for apx $1.9MM (and having them replace the $1.9MM of J. Brown and D. Ryan) and then swapping Lavoie and Perry for a $375K savings.
Boom, cap compliant with a 21 man roster.
I guess Vrana would compete with Lavoie for that last forward spot.
Of course, I don’t see them actually waiving Perry out of camp.
Sorry to be a bit slow and not be reading all the comments, but just so I know what’s going on…I think ‘The Great One’ is an attempt at a Harpers Hair rebrand?!
If so enquiring minds would like to know;
• has this name been chosen because of its incredible irony or is a continuation of perhaps the greatest lack of awareness in history?
• how many aliases is this now? And after how many failed personas does someone think, hmmm, maybe it’s just me
• why was ‘the grate one’ not chosen as it would show a level of humour and self awareness that might endear a troll to the local villagers
No idea but I’m certain there is no lack of self awareness.
Stauff mentioned yesterday that, while the Oilers didn’t qualify Carter Savoie, he thinks he offered him an AHL deal. It didn’t sound like Stauff knew this to be the case for sure but he did say it to Savoie’s agent, Gerry Johannson…..
Damn, there’s been a run on right handed defensemen.
I still can’t believe Durzi was traded for a second round pick.
Colorado has Josh Manson at 2RD. The Panthers, I think, only have Ekblad.
The Canes have 40-year-old Brett Burns and Sean Walker.
Dallas has Miro (left handed), Dumba, and Lyubushkin.
No one has any good right handed d except Boston.
Doughty
Spence
Clarke
Burroughs
You forgot Reilly Walsh
What about Brogan Rafferty?
I don’t have the Kings in the contender category though they do have better right handed defensemen than many other teams… if Clarke pans out.
Spence was a great draft pick. 4rth rounder, 2019.
Doughty is fading hard and Burroughs is below replacement level.
Any right handed d on expiring contracts playing for teams unlikely to make the playoffs or any right handed Siegenthalers floating around?
Adam Larsson
Fox
Trouba
Schneider
Ruhwedal
Fox is the goods.
Trouba is cooked. They’ve been desperately trying to trade him.
Schneider is still young and playing bottom pairing.
Pionk
Demelo
Miller
Coghlan
That’s pretty meh.
I like Demelo better than most. Before the season started last year, I had Demelo as our deadline addition.
Unfortunately, Rob Blake was playing 3D chess. He orchestrated the PLD trade which prevented the Jets from missing the playoffs.
Sean Durzi, Sean Walker & Brock Faber all say hi…. oh wait, Rob Blake traded them all out of L.A.
Oops.
I don’t understand what this list is – a mix of aging/regressing stars, 3rd pairing d-men, disappointing “top prospects” and journeymen?
Hamilton
Pesce
Nemec
Kovacevic
Foote
Hamilton and Pesce is a nice one-two punch.
Craig Conroy is a predictive genius. He’s already sent Markstrom to the Devils to help them try to stop us from winning the Stanley cup.
The Devils will be good next season.
I agree about pissin in the wind; development not always linear
Pouring through Puckpedia.
Conclusion: there are not many good RHD available. Running with the current D group until the deadline is probably the right play.
Me too. What about Radko Gudas? Would be a trade, maybe Ceci and Akey or a forward prospect? He still looks good on PuckIQ, and talk about upping the compete level. Isn’t without some skill, 4M cap hit 2 years left
The Henrique angle might entice him, he does have a 16 team list. Get out of crazy Cali and play some meaningful hockey again to close things out
Parayko, Gudas and Zub are my top three established players. Maybe Mayfield.
Doubt they’re available, but that’s the type of player (RHD, big, mobile, hairy ass, not puck optional) I’d be targeting.
Problem with Gudas is he’s specifically said that he has no intent to play in the Canadian pressure cooker.
Yes, maybe Henrique changes his mind. Or not. Parayko makes too much unless they retain but still looks good. Mayfield missed a half season and has an NTC loves NYI. His numbers have dropped off. Zub would be great, perfect. Probably cost a bit but I’d make the call, send CC back to where he started
The Ottawa Senators are going to trade us Artem Zub?
The Senators were so desperate for a right handed defensman that they traded Chychrun for a 33-year-old Nick Jensen and a 3rd round pick.
Parayko is interesting. Bad contract but decent player.
I like Gudas but he is old.
I like Zub but I doubt he gets moved.
I think John Carlson would be interesting.
Solid take, if for nothing other than it mirrors my own assessment of the situation.
Carlson is interesting, hadn’t considered he might get moved but it’s not out of the realm of possibility. Could be a good fit, but like Gudas, he’s no spring chicken.
If I’m not mistaken, John, Calrsson played the most minutes in the NHL last season so, yes, very interesting but, of course, the 2 years at a cap hit of $8MM remaining….
Unless something has changed Gudas is not coming this side of the border for any team.
Yes if he signed in Anaheim he probably is fine without winning a Cup
IMO I think the Oilers are in a situation now where if D-men have the right “bones” they can rapidly develop at the NHL level. Basically, every D-man that’s come up to the big club has had brillilant success. Part of that is development before getting to the team. The other part is the Oilers aren’t asking too much from the players once they get to the team. Having Mattias “the defenseman shepherd” around doesn’t hurt, either.
Gotta remember to leave a note with the boys next time you take a break LT – having the show devolve into Leafs talk…blech.
There are whole networks for that sorta thing gents!
although Lowtide you will be happy to know that Declan is doing an excellent job…very passionate and well spoken… a true padawan
Has there been any contemplation about getting another competent stay at home defensemen and pairing him with Nurse?
Maybe if Nurse were able to play with a little more cover, a little less burden, he might be able to use his size and skating more effectively than trying to be the main shutdown guy he has been asked to be since the big contract. He’s not that guy unfortunately.
Shutdown guys don’t usually get $9.25M contracts. They must have thought he was Bobby Orr, or something. Nurse should not need cover and he most certainly isn’t the main shut down guy, Ekholm is.
Nurse had 16 goals in 56 games the season before the contract. Combine that with nobody to replace his minutes. Nurse had Holland by the balls.
The most frustrating part is everyone else on the team is taking discounts to win. Nurse takes the bag and can’t even admit his own faults. Somehow it’s the fans/media’s fault he played horrible this year.
When did Nurse blame the fans and media for his poor play the second half of this season and the playoffs?
”Playing hard. Thanks guys, have a good day.”
IMO Nurse needs a more mobile partner who can outlet the puck.
One of Nurse’s best year was when he played a lot with Bear, who was a great passer. He also had decent results with Barrie who was also a quality passer.
Yes and gap closer and stand up at the blue, retrieve well enough. That will take pressure off Nurse. Repeated deep dives have pointed out that those are Ceci’s weaknesses
Darnell Nurse is at his best as a stay at home defenseman.
Getting younger on D might have to be the play the next few seasons
Kulaks nice but a luxury on third pairing.
I know many disagree but I will never forgive Kulak for the game 7 winning goal. If someone has to go for cap, it’s Kulak.
Yeah, too bad he didn’t score the game winning goal in game seven of the SCF.
i love kulak hes great plays big minutes even as 3rd LD. eventually we need cheaper and fresh talent even with growing pains
I’d prefer they start Bro at 3LD and get a 2RD. Bro will get his minutes and it would allow Coffey to play the pairs more evenly and keep pairs fresher for playoffs. 3 pairs with size and a puck mover. It will drive more offense
I’m hoping that they can pull off a trade for a RD
Age is a factor but the third best D in the finals was Bro, not Ceci or Kulak
At some point ability is more important and I think they need an ability upgrade. The vets were the problem not the solution
That’s where a trade for a young stud RD would come in handy.
It’s a shame we weren’t able to land Byram or Drysdale.
Ceci was beginning to impact the quality of Kulak’s play. Kulak is noticeably worse playing with Ceci than playing with Desharnais. The first couple of games is okay, and then the Ceci effect on his partner begins to kick in.
Kulak backed in because he lacked the confidence in Ceci that he had in Desharnais.
I think it was more than just a lack of confidence in Ceci. I think Kulak was worried about Kassian not getting in shooting lanes, and Barrie making poor neutral zone pinch decisions and Bouchard not tying up sticks in front.
& that is somehow Ceci’s fault?
Are you arguing the quality of the teammates and the quality of opposition one plays does not affect the level of play of a player?
McDavid makes the players around him better. Ceci makes the players around him worse.
I do agree Kulak played that poorly. Skinner needs to make that save though.
Yes very true.
The panthers deserve credit (I guess) as well. Earlier in the series they burned us , turning the 3 on 2 into a 2 on 1. That time the Oilers dman did rush the puck carrier. I think Kulak may of had that in mind and played safe. Pretty well executed plays by a dirty rat filled team.
Getting John Marino back would be nice. However, he never was too interested in signing in Edmonton. So, it would be highly unlikely.
IMO though, a nice trade with the Rangers, Cody Ceci & Philip Kemp for Braden Schnieder would be something out of left field. It’s just JJ’s style of deal, that would work well for both teams.
Schnieder is a 19th pick overall, 22 years old, RHD 6’3 211 lbs. out of Prince Albert.
But of course, why would the Rangers do that?
The only reason Marnio wanted out was there was no path to the NHL since he was blocked.
There’s no reason he wouldn’t come back if he had a clear spot. He might be a good 3RD for this team at this time, depending on the AAV he’d want. Not sure how good he is on the PK.
Well, he would have a clear spot. Let’s see if he comes back. Circumstances are different. My belief is he’s American and wants to play in the States.
marino is not cheap or affordable unfortunately
That ship has sailed.
On further research Schneider is an unsigned RFA for the Rangers and is considered a top 4 Dman, expecting something around the $2 million to $4 million range on a bridge deal. Not something the Oilers could afford. Would no doubt be the ideal partner for Nurse.
But that’s what Broberg is. Isn’t he? Good thing JJ is handling this and not me. It’s tough to find the right deal. So, we wait.
Maximus Wanner. Already ours, very inexpensive. If Brock Faber can play 22 mins as a rookie, why can’t Wanner play 14. I have a feeling we will see him this year in Edmonton.
Wanner isn’t Brock Faber.
I doubt Wanner sees NHL games until the 2025/26 season.
He may get some games this year but, while he had a very encouraging rookie pro season, I don’t think he’s on the verge of an NHL spot right now.
Faber: Drafted 45th in 2020
Wanner: Drafted 212th in 2021
Asking Maximus to play NHL minutes this year might be asking a bit much. A cup of coffee at the end of the year would impressive. He probably needs all of this upcoming season and the next, before punching his ticket to the big show.
Who is the most underrated, unsung defenceman in Oiler history?
Here are my top 3. Would love to hear yours…
1) Janne Niinimaa
2) Craig Muni
3) Eric Brewer
Boris Mironov. Way better than 95% of people appreciated.
Ryan Whitney in 2011-12. He was having a Norris-calibre season.
Roman Hamrlik. A Sather special on the trade that brought him (a vet and 2 young spare parts that aren’t working out for a former #1 pick and a prospect who if not for concussions would likely have played 10+ years for the team) and just an awesome hockey player.
Nostalgia in full effect today – if Paul Comrie never gets concussed…imagine the brothers staying for a decade together and turning the team into something amazing. Paul was a hell of a player.
Bobo is a great choice. He was an absolute horse.
Loved Bobo. Kravchuck?
Igor could play for sure. Back when the team knew how to get and utilize Russian players.
Craig Muni.
Spacek
1) Jason Smith
2) Charlie Huddy
3) Boris Mironov
I picked this list to represent the d-men I had the most confidence in to make the right play at the right time (more often than not). The common thread between them is they typically played on weak teams, and were still moving pucks north and out of danger.
There were plenty of players it was tough not to choose (Brewer, Niinimaa, Bobo, Kravchuk, Hamrlik, Ulanov, Marchment, Beukeboom, even Poti to a degree), but to me the three I listed had an outsized impact (did more with less).
Don Jackson
Niinimaa
Poti
Petry
Ninnimaa, Boris Mironov, Kravchuk…that’s my list. Lot’s of love for other players, but these guys are my underrated heroes. I’d add an honorable mention to Ulanov, who twice looked like a superstar here, in very brief spurts. 😀
I look for Munzenburger to sign an AHL deal with the Condors when he’s done with college. Maybe an ELC? I think the Deharnais route makes sense.
I haven’t seen him play much but recall him being more of a “2-way guy” in the brief stints at the World Juniors – Covid effed up his showings on the international stage.
He reminder me a bit of a young Michael Kesselring – one can hope/dream.
For rugged defender, I have hopes that Phil Kemp will take another step this year, pass Josh Brown on the depth chart and maybe, just maybe, solidify a 3RD spot (currently likely that of Cody Ceci, with Stecher currently ahead).
It may never happen, or it may.
LOL if you’re looking for a rugged defender Josh Brown certainly fits the bill.
He sure is rugged.
I’d prefer one that hasn’t proven to be fully under water during the entirety of his NHL career.
With Phil Kemp, we don’t know that he won’t be under water, he very well may be – its to be determined.
With Josh Brown, well, there is an established history there.
That’s OK we have both been wrong before.
Gee. Maybe they could use Josh on RW too?
LOL.
He’s on a meh team and someone commented he had high D zone starts the other day
Im reserving judgement as I haven’t watched him closely, although my hope is he’s better than Des. I’ve had enough of puck optional types on the Oilers
Lots of d-zone starts, very few minutes against tough comp – mostly mid and Grits.
He’s already 30 so I don’t think we are looking at him developing his game.
Sure, he’ll likely have better results on a better team but this player has an established level of play in the NHL and its not in the lineup of a contending team – in my opinion.
Kenny is gone. The playoffs opened the minds of the coaching staff and new management to actually address the problem. No longer, Kenny just sitting on his hands and going all in on Ceci, even after losing the Vegas series.
In fairness to Holland, Ceci was playing injured during the Vegas series and naturally he was expecting Cody to make the big come back the next season. But yeah, it’s time to move Ceci Senora.
Well, to this point, management has not done anything to positively address “the problem” and, actually, in my opinion, down-graded from Vinny D. to Josh B.
To this point.
They could be looking at the combo of both Stecher & Brown, two vet RHD to play with Kulak on the third pair, to replace Ceci, more cost effectively. Vinny priced himself out, otherwise he wouldn’t be a Canuck making twice what he would as an Oiler. It’s all about money. IMO it’s not a matter of if they trade Ceci, it’s a matter of when they trade Ceci, they will knock $3.25M off the cap and that will be positive.
Vinny is being paid twice as much, a contract that most said he wouldn’t get.
You were adamant not pay Vinny what he got, Oilers had to sign some beef. Brown at half the rate is the result of that, imo Vinny’s player card wouldn’t look much different then Browns if he was a Coyote the last two seasons.
Vinny got an opportunity in Edmonton he may not have ever gotten elsewhere in the NHL.
They got him an NHL contract for sure and into the league, but for me he wasn’t the right type. I don’t think he and Ceci can play a high enough tempo, and that’s KK’s style
Vinny’s looks worse than Brown’s to me at Puck IQ on the Oilers
Absolutely I was of the opinion that I would go over $1.75MM for Vinny and even that would have been stretching my person ceiling for him.
I’m fine with the Oilers not over-paying for Vinny.
They definitely signed some beef with Brown but, at the same time, I think he is a much inferior player and I am hopeful that he doesn’t play many, or any, NHL games with the Oilers.
Happy for him to prove my opinion wrong, that would be fantastic, but everything I’ve read and heard from those with more eyes on him that me line up with his numbers – which is not good.
Well, they have. Broberg is likely #2RD on the depth chart. And they have NOT extended Ceci. And they have a handful of competitors for Ceci at right D.
Kemp, Brown, Stecher, Carrick, Gleason
That should be enough to get to the deadline, when they will know whether Broberg is up to the challenge.
And we know that they are probably not sitting on their hands and hoping like Kenny did last year. If an opportunity for a decent RD becomes available, they will likely morve.
Not extending Ceci a year prior to his contract being up is evidence of absolutely nothing and you know that – come on G, don’t try and sneak that by as meaningful – you are better than that.
Those handful of competitors for Ceci at RD are the same last last season but a downgrade from Deharnais to Brown. Carrick is a non-factor.
I’m sure they will likely move if they could upgrade the RD on a reasonable deal – prior management tried that as well, offering a substantial package for Tanev and kicking tires on Walker (that we know of).
Agreed.
Seems incredibly strange to simultaneously throw shade on Holland and Ceci while cheering the new guy’s signing of a Dman who could not consistently crack the roster of the woeful Coyotes…but then I note the source and his continued ax to grind.
Isn’t it grand to see the rightorium we’re seeing being developed in Oilerville.
Phil Kemp was a 7th-rounder I believe.
University of St. Thomas – I doubt he goes there
Competent #6 dmen are a dime a dozen as we have seen over the years (Deharnais, Stetcher)
I hope they can parlay Ceci, Kulak and a prospect into a legit 2RD
Competent #6 dmen are nothing to get too excited about until you get to round 3 of the playoffs and discover that the other team is feeding off of every weakness you left unadressed at the TD.
The Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup with Alex Petrovic in their lineup nightly in the SCF and he had not played in the NHL in like 4 years (I think one game).
Good news. There’s hope for Josh Brown.
The fact that Knobber only got McDavid out for 10 minutes out of the 68 that Petrovic played at 5 on 5 was a missed opportunity.
Petrovic played this season for Dallas, not Florida.
Coaching and player development makes a difference. I’ve seen it personally and also observed it time and time again over the years.
Paigin and Niemelainen will always pain me in this regard.
No one in the modern era gets close to Omark in this way though. Sather would have turned Omark into an absolute star in both ends of the rink. His ability to win corner battles alone despite size limitations and not being terribly physical was utterly beautiful to watch.
Knoblauch may have some of this gift as well. I like the early returns, but we shall see how the first full season goes.
That was perhaps my favourite trait of Lubomir Visnovski as well. Still burns my gullet that we traded him in search of magic beans.
Yep. He was a special player who we still wish to replicate to get the puck to #s 97 and 29.
I’m also probably one of the biggest Joni Pitkanen fans. Between the corner work, the positioning and being the best puck flipper I’ve ever seen, his unique personality would have been just fine in this era and with the right guidance.
I’m convinced if you were able to put Pronger and Pitkanen out at the same time, no one would score on them. Ever.
I don’t know if Stan Weir could’ve made Omark care about defense.
Omark was one of the most over-rated players to wear an Oilers uniform next to Nail Yakupov. You guys thought McLeod was soft … those two made McLeod look like he was made of granite by comparison.
Jeff Jackson is known as a pioneer in the player development area for propsects even before they are drafted to an NHL organization and it will be interesting to see what Kalle Larsson and his team does.
Will note that the Oilers development camp switched to fully off-ice, there were no on-ice sessions.
I can’t remember if it was Matt Kassian or Colby Cohen but someone in the last couple days expressed that on-ice sessions for development camps in July were useless.
