The Edmonton Oilers have a chance to start a December run tonight, as the Columbus Blue Jackets come to town. CBJ are stronger this season than usual, 6-3-1 in the last 10 but not strong (3-7-2) on the road. The Oilers have Zach Hyman coming back into the lineup and that should help. One question I’m hoping we get an answer to in the coming days? What, exactly, is the RW depth chart? Based on recent viewings, I can’t see Kaperi Kapanen behind all of Hyman, Viktor Arvidsson, Connor Brown and Corey Perry. Kapanen solves some things. Speed. Aggression. I think he may force the issue on right wing before the deadline.
The Athletic article today is on the third line. Some of the numbers posted this season by that trio are eye-popping. Article is here.

- At home to: UTA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)

- December results: 0-1-0
- Oilers in 2024-25: 13-10-2, 28 points in 25 games
Oilers need this win and it could set up a nice early run in December. This month will tell us much about what Stan Bowman will be looking for at the deadline. Based on your comments to me on the blog and privately, your main concerns are Stuart Skinner, Evan Bouchard, Second pair RH side, Jeff Skinner, scoring wingers, fourth-line center. That’s a lot for a deadline, but the view should be clearer on New Year’s day.
FOUR NATIONS UPSIDE
Lots of online upset among Oilers fans about the final lists for Four Nations rosters. It isn’t a major tournament (one-offs happen and this looks like one) so there won’t be much of a chance to build up rage and rancor about this event. Connor McDavid, Mattias Ekholm and Viktor Arvidsson will play (if healthy, Arvidsson’s day-to-day has more sustain than Jimmy Page), but all other Oilers (as of right now) will rest.
I think that’s a positive. If you’re asking me if Evan Bouchard should be there, the answer is yes. If you’re asking me if I’m upset he will rest instead, my answer is no sir. Rest at that point of the season will be key for Edmonton’s big minutes men. It’s all good in my opinion.
TONIGHT
I’m loving the defense currently. Not everything is roses, but at five-on-five Since the start of November there’s some good mojo working. Ekholm-Bouchard (59 percent expected goals since November 1, but 11-13 goals); Nurse-Kulak (3-0 goals and 63 percent expected goals); Nurse-Stecher (3-2 goals and 61 percent expected goals); Kulak-Emberson (6-8 goals and 31 percent expected goals). There’s some wobble for sure, but I’ll take it. Kulak-Emberson are running some good luck based on expected goals, that might be something to monitor.
The Lowdown runs noon to 2pm today on Sports1440. We’ll have the view from both teams on the show today plus have a long look at the NFL and NCAA football with Declan. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio; Radioplayer Canada, we tweet out the show after it’s done and you can catch us on Apple and Spotify.
I hope McDavid and Draisaitl target Holloway and Broberg early and often and make absolute fools of them tonight.
Gregor:
GAME DAY PREDICTION: Oilers get back to .500 on home ice with a 6-3 victory.
OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: Ekholm scores his first EV goal of the season. He has a career-most six goals v. Columbus.
NOT-SO-OBVIOUS GAME DAY PREDICTION: On the night he gets honoured for being the fourth quickest player to 1,000 points, McDavid picks up four points.
Pff! Couldn’t even get that Ekholm would score on the PP, eh?
Template remains. A little wobble but two fluke goals only made it look closer than it actually was.
A deserved dominant win.
Hyman and Bouch look like they took it personally when they were left off the Canadian team.
Nurse looks like he’s gonna maintain this level. Skinner sighting. Made some astute plays tonight. Consecutive good games gives us hope he’s coming on.
25 pts for McDavid in last 12 games after return from injury. And all without a consistent PP and mostly without Nuge and Hyman at full capacity
McGenerational
Score was closer than it should’ve been. One fluky goal and Pic should’ve probably had one of the other two. Dominant win.
Drai selfishly scored that PPG taking away a chance for Hyman to get the EN hatty.
lol I see sarcasm is lost on some
I guess 2 is some.
I looked it up, some is not 2. I guess sarcasm is lost on a couple currently.
Wow, real sharp there, you must be really proud of yourself. After you mistook the original comment as a real criticism of Sraisaitl
What is up with Brownie? Two open nets in two games and nothin…you can go weeks without getting looks like that…gotta bury those
Connor Brown last yr version makes a reappearance
Connor Brown is a legit terrible finisher….
I honestly don’t know how he scored 20 in a season.
Yep and by the looks of it he will be lucky to score 10 in a season. Stone cold hands.
Missed a gaping net 2 games in a row. Previous game’s gaffs were the worst.
Holy crap that was an amazing shot. Just wow!
BOOM!!! Drai don’t ever miss from there. Almost unfair…
What a release!
ROCKET LEON!
Janmark breaking ankles!
Why is Leon out with Nuge and Hyman…..?
Was that just a line change…?
Nuge forever being Monahan’s bully is an awesome thread in the fabric.
Geez Ek, great recovery but a terrible decision to pinch with a 2-goal lead the Jackets with momentum….
Pickard doesn’t even make an effort to look around the screen.
Time for the forth line to sit for a while.
Poor defensive zone play by Brown – get that puck out at the line.
Ooop, before I finish typing, its in the net.
Weak call on Janmark……
Top line and top d-pairing killing this game – unstoppable by eye and the numbers back that up.
Bouch all-world tonight – that play defensive play after Leon broke his stick, to force the off-side was elite.
Happy to say my prediction of Nurse’s emergence as a upper echelon capable defenseman has taken big strides since last whenever I made the prediction on Lowetide.
Nurse looks better and better.
I want 10.
PILE ON!!
Which d-man made that play at the point to keep that in?
Cale Makar.
BOOM!!! Skinners shows off silky hands!!!
J SKINZ!!
My goodness.
I believe THAT was what was advertised.
Very cool to see.
Needed that goal after missing the PP (X2) opportunity.
Here comes Jeff Skinner….
Ridiculous move there.
Skinner! 3rd line cash’s!
Not exactly what I was looking for on that 4-min PP…..
They generated great chances and kept it rolling
Poor play by Hyman!
Good battle by Podz there – think he drew a PIM.
PIM separate.
This door repair better be on their tab 😏
For about 10 seconds on their last shift 93-97-18 looked like the old KLM soviet line!
27 stick saved a goal
Nope. Col player missed it
GA followed up by a dominating shift by the 1st line and then the 4th line caving the Jacket in – perfect.
That’s a bad goal by Picks.
Gives the Jackets some “belief” as Rob Brown would say – hopefully the Oilers crush that belief before it grows.
Hyman is back, baby. Still below expected goals, for what it’s worth.
Jeff Skinner is rolling again
My goodness Nurse is playing good hockey (and, yes, i saw him ice the puck – god forbid).
Hyman showing Canada their mistake in not adding him to the team.
BOOM!!! Hyman is Rhymin tonight!!!
2 goals and a video view win. Is that a hatty for Hyman?
Hyman hatty. Definitely.
That’s kind of expected for Hyman, but good to see.
Once the dam breaks..
Yep – needed an injury apparently. Crazy game.
Hyman is BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great finish – beautiful passing.
BOOM!!! Eks!!! Rare PP2 goal!!!
Ha ha wasn’t sure we actually had a PP2!
Summarizing!
Wakely scored twice, including a shortie, to give him 12 on the year. He was named 3rd star.
Akey and Clattenburg each had an apple.
Day stopped 30 of 34 in a losing cause.
