The Oilers own a nova heart in December, inspired play bringing responsible hockey to the final frontier. A fanbase raised on arias and symphonies and devoted to pure offense is seeing shot and high-danger suppression all over this land. The question for Kris Knoblauch is the same one we have asked about all coaches since the last successful defensive coach (Craig MacTavish) to walk the cold, cold streets of downtown Edmonton. The forwards continue to score, those old emotions remain. What’s new? The defense is well positioned, and both sets of skaters close gaps like demons. Music!
The Athletic article today is about balance. How close are the Oilers right now? Article is here.

- At home to: UTA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)

- December results: 5-1-0
- Oilers in 2024-25: 18-10-2, 38 points in 30 games
This is going to be a fun week, with the Stanley Cup Final matchup from the spring on the schedule tonight, followed by my childhood team (the Bruins) and then two cuts from The Soft Parade to round out the pre-Christmas schedule. It’ll be a good test, we know the Oilers will be ready for the Panthers, but they also need to make sure they are ready to demolish the Sharks and Senators. I have the team going 3-1-0 this week.
MOST DEPLOYED LINES, 2024-25 (five-on-five)
Nuge-McDavid-Hyman: 11-7 goals (61 percent) in 162 minutes. The expected goals (62 percent) are right in line with performance and only injury and struggles from the wingers in cashing passes have held this trio back. Hyman is scoring at just 1.26 points-60 on the McDavid line at five-on-five, Nuge (1.59) is better but both wingers should be able to increase scoring totals in the days to come. The line allowed 2.57 GA-60 last season, that number is 2.6 GA-60 this year. Quality trio, wingers need to increase offense.
Janmark-Henrique-Brown: 4-4 goals (50 percent) in 100 minutes. The line has an expected goal share of 59 percent, and this is the No. 3 line so a 50 percent goal share is fine (Oilers can win Stanley if the bottom six play at par). Puck IQ has Henrique playing elites 3:37 a night, 40 percent Dangerous Fenwick but a stellar 7-0 goals. That’s a gap, but the line has been effective and has played 100 minutes together already this season.
Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Arvidsson: 3-3 goals in 92 minutes. This line was interrupted by the Arvidsson injury, suspect we’ll see it again soon. Expected goals 57 percent and the GA-60 (1.95) is encouraging as Draisaitl is showing exceptional progress in goal suppression for the second season in a row.
Skinner-Henrique-Janmark: 2-1 goals in 85 minutes. Huzzah! Skinner on an outscoring line! Let’s not go crazy, we aren’t close to 200 minutes, and the expected goals (41 percent) and scoring chance share (40 percent) are eternal damnation. The HDSC (17-16) totals are encouraging and I do think Kris Knoblauch needs Skinner’s goal power as a regular part of the team.
Draisaitl-McDavid-Hyman: 8-2 goals in 82 minutes. People get the vapors when this trio marches through the saloon doors, but good lord their scoring rate is intoxicating. Expected goals 68 percent, this trio is money, money, money. I don’t think the Oilers will ever have the depth to run the line full time, what a wonderful world it would be.
Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Kapanen: 3-1 goals (75 percent) in 51 minutes. Small sample size alert, but this trio is absolute fire currently. An expected goal share (all of these numbers are five-on-five) of 75 percent matches the performance. A quick note here on Leon, who has improved his GA-60 year over year from 2.34-60 to 1.71-60 this season. Music! What a player.
It’ll be a busy day on the Lowdown, noon to 2 on Sports 1440. Rachel Doerrie from ESPN and Betalytics will join us, we’ll discus the current run by the team and the value of keeping powder dry until the deadline. I’ll also ask about how much of an upgrade Edmonton’s roster received via last week’s waiver activity. Jason Gregor will join us in hour two, he has been trumpeted the fine work of Leon Draisaitl and I’ll ask about a Hart/Selke summer for the big man. Declanations with Declan Krueger is Momma MMA. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio; Radioplayer Canada, we tweet out the show after it’s done and you can catch us on Apple and Spotify.
New for The Athletic: Are the Oilers balanced?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5995596/2024/12/16/edmonton-oilers-roster-2024/
Ask Florida, Tampa, Minnesota and Golden Knights that question.
Tonight’s game demonstrated that the Oilers now have the forward depth to go up against the league’s best. It also highlighted that the main thing they are missing is another legit top 4 D to take the pressure off and reduce the minutes for Bouch, Ek, Nurse and Kulak.
That said, I’m trying to decide if 7mins of Ryan and 10mins of Perry (and only 10mins of Podz?) is the best lineup utilization
When Kane and Arvidsson get back there forward ranks will be DEEP.
When the Oilers scored their 4th goal they put up a stat saying the Oilers were like 15-0-0 in games they’ve scored at least 4 this season. At the time I thought “Oh geez. Don’t tell me that! That just means we’re due!”
I fully blame whichever Amazon employee put that stat up while peeing into a Powerade bottle.
Entwrtaining game. Showed some holes in their game in the 3rd when Florida cranked up the physicality and pace. Despite the goal of controlled breakouts glass and out and icings are acceptable tactics in times of high pressure.
Most groveling apologies for jinxing this game at 4-2; but at that point the Oilers had Florida by the throat, then lost their heads…
Still it was a classic NHL entertainment regardless of the final score. I still hope they learn something because Florida are still the defending champs, man.
Poor defensive effort tonight from the Oiler. The “top 5” were especially bad.
And Skinner cannot let in the Reinhart goal from the corner, back breaking goal against.
Messier not impressed with defensive effort
By either team but Oilers in his intent
We praise McDavid and Draisaitl when they score that goal. Sam Reinhart had 57 goals last year, and 20 so far this year.
What’s your point?
I think J. Skinner is the man out when Arvidson is ready to go. Week plays by him leading up to 2 goals against
If your name doesn’t start with a C, or a L, fight anyone who does a nasty
Bang them, take a run at their goalie. Seems to work for them. Time for Tiger Stripe or Chocolate. Or Ghost Pepper. Vanilla and hockey tastes like manure
Bouchard’s worst game in the NHL. Abysmal although I know he wasn’t alone.
Guessing he was less than 100% and likely played too many minutes He was -2 but so were Connor and Leon.(assuming TSN info correct)
His partner had some rough moments as well. They did not handle the forecheck well. Hearing footsteps
6 goals on 28 shot
Woof
Oilers 0-3 on Amazon Prime now. This is the first one we didn’t get shutout at least. Maybe don’t bet money on the Oilers on Apr 14th.
That was a charge on Jeff Skinner in front of the bench. 100%
Tell the players not to react to bullpoo like that is like telling them to not know the rules. Utter nonsense. They never recovered from that.
I bet Maurice has them practice being complete POSs. He looks the part
Horrible broadcast (“Oilers looking to extend their lead” @@ Anyone hear that?) horrible officiating but the loss is on our horrible defence and Bouch Ek were bad. Days like this I want 6 Embersons.
LT taught me that when players struggle injury is often the answer. I think Bouchard needs his minutes dialed back until he is 100% healthy.
He and Ek haven’t been very good in a while
Bah!
Well we lost game 8. That sucks.
Thank goodness Florida can’t score in the West
Sad horn
Another let go
The Amazon curse is real…..
F[_]CK Amazon
I hate Maurice so much. Honestly, what a dirtbag.
💯
Being out willed and looking for fancy. Perhaps sick?
Flu is hitting Alberta hard right now.
Bouchard is definitely injured.
Yes. Weird the lack of gumption overall. Healthy enough I would have expected a savage level of energy. Not
This game is like reliving the horror that was the Stanley Cup finals loss.
PTSD
I’m bummed aht
Skinners puckhandling adds more pressure to the forecheck.
This game really reminds me why the Oil need one more high end defender.
The top 5 line defence cost this game.
Skinner hung out to dry this period. Such a shame, at 4-2 there’s no excuse.
D are rattled. Can’t make a pass, can’t take the pressure. Centers aren’t coming low enough. Skinner is on an island.
Yes. They need some functioning bangers to change the script
Pretty much just Bouchard I think
Just Bouchard?
Ekholm was worse in the 3rd (actually the last couple periods).
All of this. Florida’s play style is our kryptonite. They’re lethal on turnovers.
That was poor defending by our top 5. Get pissed off and get it back.
Florida has had plenty of time to scout our top units.
throw out the other units and tell them to spill blood!
Don’t have the horses for that game… yet. that will be on the deadline shopping list
The lack of execution exiting the zone is really frustrating. I appreciate Florida pressures hard, but glass and out is fine. Especially when up by two earlier the game. It has caught us multiple times tonight.
I saw Henrique in particular having a dastardly time getting the puck out many times. Feels like he should be better than that
Definitely time to split up the 5 man unit
Ek and Bouch need a break
Gf% es no bueno
Maybe Nurse top pair with??
100% they’re over playing that pairing
Ek has not been near his level. Time to stop running the big guns too much
Ekholm is 4th among d-men for 5 on 5 TOI over the last 10 games and 3rd overall.
Both Nurse and Kulak have played more at 5 on 5 than both Bouch and Ek over the last 10 games (and Nurse more than both overall).
Ekholm gives up a freebie. the winger was changing, but this is the template against this D. High Pressure
What a shitty game. Piss poor plays everywhere.
Just started watching. 6 goals on 24 shots. My goodness.
Just when I thought I had had it with nothing unfair ever happening to Vegas, Fla comes and demonstrates how they use uncalled penalties as fuel. They truly apply the axiom that if you are a POS 10x more than the other team, the refs will still call even penalties.
Yet the Oilers refuse to add more players capable of doing it back. The softest lineup in the leauge combined with Kane missing is such a shame.
Tough period for Ekholm, very tough.
The diving play on Reinhardt’s goal was bizarre. He had body position and was 6 feet from the puck.
Was that goal with Nuge between Podz and Kap (given load up)? If so, even more huge….
New look line, Nuge between Kapanen and Podz paid off. Kasperi been quiet tonight, timely goal indeed.
Giving up three straight was suboptimal
Thank you Leon
Kulikov was out, regardless if he got up, on the chin
Hate to say it but Panthers physical play got them back in the game.
They got away with a clear interference. I don’t see that as a good physical play
They have gotten away with some cheap shots but they are clearly the more physical team.
I swear to the Hockey Gords.
It was 4-3 when I turned Amazon on and proceeded to put away the folded laundry on the bed…
What in the hell?
Draisaitl is morphing into a pre concussed Lindros lol
Which goalie wants it the least?
Skinner it seems… Sigh
Looks like Stu….
I would like to see the Oilers add the Undertaker at the deadline to literally murder some of there Panther players.
Relentless work by Kap (and Podz).
Lucky goal a bit but they earned the break with hard work below the goal line.
It’s crazy town out there
5-5
KAPANEN
Kapanen!
and a gross one the other way to fix the vibes……
Geez your feed must be quite ahead of mine. I didn’t know what you were talking about then we score.
Skinner plays very small for a large person.
Lame
Okay, what’s with the excessive downvotes today, people? Just a kind explanation would do.
He makes himself small when he lunges forward. Mike Smith used to do the same. Frustrating
Ugh, that is gross, very gross.
What should have been a 2 min interference becomes a goal. Terrible ref and terrible announcing
Yes. They seem to be way too excited for the Away team.
Bouchard is Boucharding too much tonight.
It’s games like this that makes his 4 nations “snub” make sense. It’s also games like this, that Hyman’s snub completely insane.
Too much play in our own end. Panthers with heavy forecheck.
