By the time spring rolled around 17 miles north of Maidstone, the isolation of winter in Saskatchewan gave way to more socialization. In mid-winter, interaction might be limited to buying the inexpensive hockey magazines at the Allan Store (they used to rip the top of the cover off “Hockey World” and then sell it for like 10 cents. I don’t know why, the 1970’s were weird) and maybe saying hello to a neighbour who happened to be at the store for canned goods, nails, etc.
My personal favourite purchase was “Smith Brothers cough drops” with the wild cherry borderline intoxicating. My Mom picked up on my ‘cough drops as candy’ usage early on, so I would have to fake a sore throat at times when she raised an eyebrow.
As soon as I could each spring, I’d ride my bike two miles to the Allan Store, and do the shopping solo. When you’re 10, walking into a store with money—maybe a dollar or two, no more—without parental hovering was quite the deal. I loved the chocolate bars (oh how I miss Bar Six), Salt and Vinegar potato chips and Coca-Cola. I especially loved not hearing about ruining my appetite or the ritual worrying verbal about what youth of today wasted their money on. Again: 1970’s were weird.
The Allan brothers were nice fellows with bizarre senses of humor, I imagine these years later they must have been bored most days. I liked them fine, I think I was the only one who bought “Hockey World” with the top half of the cover ripped off and they were nice to me. I discovered girls there, they had bikes too and smelled good.
Saturdays 17 miles north of Maidstone meant some work (shoveling coal, or carrying wood, Dad was the only one who could use the axe) and plenty of play. We had goats, on account of my brother not being able to drink cow’s milk. Goats are funny animals, they are sweet, unpredictable, smell bad (not as bad as penguins, mind) and could be stubborn. We had a billy goat named Billy (we were not the world’s most creative family) and he just stunk to high heavens. Imagine walking garbage.
One time, Dad tethered Billy in the yard where he could graze in a fresh area (because he ate all the grass in the usual area).
The new tether allowed Billy access to things like parked cars and the clothes line. That was the beginning of Billy and Mom’s terrific battles. Mom won, but Billy ruined sheets and shirts and all kinds of things. He also famously reared up and rammed Mom right in the ass as she bent over to grab more laundry to hang on the line. I saw it, laughed and then ran over to see if Mom was okay. She wasn’t okay. She was pissed! Billy had a smile-sneer on his face, kind of like Glen Sather, but it didn’t turn out well. Dad sold the goat not long after, he was sad to do it but Mom said.
Saturdays for me remain Hockey Night at My House. I won’t ride my bike to the Allan Store today, I won’t pretend to have a sore throat in order to have a couple of Smith Brothers, no salt and vinegar, no Coca-Cole, no bar six and no billy goats.
Those days are gone, they are just beautiful, innocent memories for an old man who reminisces more than most, I imagine.
You might say 17 miles north of Maidstone was a lonely place to grow up, but you’d be wrong. I was alone many days, too much probably, but it gave me a great imagination, an appreciation of dawn, dusk and the midnight sky. I saw the northern lights dancing, I discovered girls, I invested in magazines with covers that featured Jean Ratelle from the hips down. I wouldn’t change a thing.
It’s Hockey Night in Canada. In a lifetime few things last forever. Hockey on Saturday is one.
“I think he’s going to play in the playoffs” – Bowman on Kane.
“May not be ready for the start”.
I am convinced he’ll be ready, but Stan was seeding doubt so as not to arouse suspicion for this being a planned return to NHL for game 1 of the playoffs.
Kane won’t be the first player to have done this
Frederick is skating – probably 10-14 days away.
“They are not serious injuries” “Not going to be a long time” “Not concerned”. “Lean will probably be back before Connor” – Bowman on After Hourse.
Burying the lead here OP haha. Bowman re: Connor’s contract talks this summer:
“We all know that Connor is going to be here and we’re going to make it happen.”
(!!!!)
Sure, that’s not news though.
That’s interesting considering LeBrun was reporting the opposite.
Nuge gotta be the NHL’s first star if the week, right?
Oilers with 13 hits tonight. Podz with 6 and Jones 4. Lots of guys pitched no hitters….
When there were 16 games left I decided to announce a 16 game final run to the playoffs mini season:
So far Oilers are a sparkling 3-0-1
I like it. Though it should be 3-1, no OTL in the playoffs.
Good win. They played better against Winnipeg in the 3rd, I would say but the team again played well enough to win without the Harts, and that’s something. 2/5 on the PP with simplified play was also a positive.
Jeff Skinner’s deployment this season for some reason reminds me of this clip: https://youtu.be/EGWT5JMl3ns?si=G0TJTKINMxQ0JZq5
Oilers prove tonight to be a pretty good NHL hockey team:
SIX point night for the defence.
HAT TRICK for RNH!!
For a bunch of these vets, I have the impression they intentionally coasted until 15 games left and are now buckling down and finding their game for the upcoming dance. Nuge, Zach, Ekholm, Henrique, Janmark… they’ve all only recently put it into 4th gear
I’ve been saying for months that the team has barely taken it out of 2nd gear.
I don’t know about “intentionally coasting” but definitely cognizant of how long the season is and the grind of the playoffs.
McDavid no longer hitting or leading with his shoulder in puck battle is a clear indication for me.
This is what the Oilers are without their two Forest Rangers.
A lower level playoff team with potential to go on a cinderella run.
Nuge is just playing the game the coach asks him to play.
Someone should have punched Stuart Skinner instead of congratulating him. He was so shaky during that last easy save it wasn’t even funny.
Still, he’s got his good side. Fire that putrid goalie coach and get him someone who understands how to get him to play with just slightly less panic; he could blossom instantly into a premiere goalie.
That last shot was in regulation and tipped. Nice stop by Stu. Points without McLeon!!! Rest up boys!
Both goaltenders were shaky.
Nice win for Edmonton.
They’ve lost quite a few of these when the G at the other end is better than average
Good win – would prefer not to have given up 4.
RNH putting team on his back.
Biggest part of the penalty is the faceoff in the SEA zone.

FYI: the Philp goal was a beauty dangle.
Nurse 🤦🏻♂️
That was all Walman with the aggressive gap and no recovery.
lol Guys forgot there was still a game to play! Such an Oilers thing to do, eh?
Nurse with the soft coverage. You have to actually provide some resistance to getting to that spot!
Not loving Nurses play lately with the Walman.
Let’s not bring Walman into this..
The reverse Bon Jovi effect 🙁
Go get another empty-netter for #4!
Take the man Darnell…..
He can get overly puck focused
Skinner is Swiss cheese
The special teams witch is back!
(I’m still bitter LT didn’t use Burn the Witch for Nuge back when he was assigning Radiohead songs for his reasonable expectations series.)
Maybe our host should choose another problem player to write about.. after the Nuge article (accurate at the time) the Nuge has turned it around in a huuuuuge way!
Don’t think its a good idea to go 6 on 4 there
Nuge must read this blog
This will help RNH get to 50 points,
Maybe one day
🧢 🧢 🧢
So many cold heads!
No Drai. No Mcdavid. No problem, says the Nuge!
The Nuge will set you free
Well LT. Guess you gotta lay off the Nuge for a while now eh?
They’ll probably pull the goalie again…..
BOOM!!! Nuge long range!!! Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy!!’
Ryan! Nugent! Hatty!
No Glimmer twins … no problem.
Nuge with a monster game tonight!
Don’t call it a comeback.
RNH has unfinished business.
The Nuge, is HUGE.
Nice play by Walman on the boards.
What a night for Burnaby Nuge!
Nuge Snipe – Hatty!
Hatty for Nuge! Whoop whoop!!!!
Oleksiak Good job selling that one. This is what I’m talking about
NHL refs mandate is parity. Keep it close, keep it exciting.
Janitor deserves some garbage.
Holy heck, Janny! When you find your finish again you’re gonna pop some big goals! Great skating, buddy. Don’t let up, it’ll come!
Janitor will never score again.
