We are down the stretch and at the final turn now, the regular-season schedule is in sight. The marathon season finally sees winter ease and spring emerge in the land of ice and snow. We have yet to see the roster Stan Bowman imagined in the hours after the deadline. There is no Miro Satan 1994-95 bubbling under and awaiting recall. Or is there?

IF IT WERE ME…
I’ve been thinking lately about ideal lines for the playoffs. This won’t happen, but as a blue-sky think piece I like it.
LINE 1: Jeff Skinner-Connor McDavid-Zach Hyman
Since January 1, this trio has been on the ice for just 21 minutes at five-on-five. However, they have scored 4-1 goals and own a 60 percent expected goal share. That’s 11.25 goals-60 on a trio that doesn’t involve both glimmer twins. I’ll take it.
LINE 2: Trent Frederic-Leon Draisaitl-Viktor Arvidsson
This line, with Vasily Podkolzin playing left wing, has outscored opponents (five-on-five) to 56 percent with an expected goal share of 61 percent. I believe Frederic can provide the same level of performance defensively while controbuting more offense.
LINE 3: Vasily Podkolzin-Nuge-Connor Brown
Nuge and Brown have combined to outscore the other side (five-on-five) at a 64 percent (55 expected) clip. I placed Podkolzin here, but Evander Kane might be more suited to the role. This line, and the next one, are more about outscoring as opposed to scoring.
LINE 4: Evander Kane-Adam Henrique-Corey Perry
If Kane can’t go, and that’s very possible, Mattias Janmark would get my vote to draw in. I can’t take Corey Perry out of the lineup for any of Janmark, Kasperi Kapanen or Max Jones. Injuries will take care of playing time, same as it ever was.
AHL POINTS-GAME FOR FORWARDS
I thought it might be fun to run some points-game totals for rookie Condors over the last several seasons.
- Matt Savoie 2024-25: 0.81
- Jesse Puljujarvi 2016-17: 0.72
- Dylan Holloway 2021-22: 0.67
- Kailer Yamamoto 2018-19: 0.67
- Xavier Bourgault 2022-23: 0.55
- Noah Philp 2022-23: 0.53
- Raphael Lavoie 2021-22: 0.46
- Ryan McLeod 2019-20: 0.41
Huh. Interesting names there. I wonder if Savoie factors in to things this spring. If injuries hit, it would be possible.
The Lowdown is noon-2pm today, Sports 1440. We’ll look at tonight’s game in Vegas, the lines and pairings for the playoffs and more with Daniel Nugent-Bowman at The Athletic. We’ll also talk plenty of MLB. The Tuesday vibe is different, as Declan, Liam and me are joined by Donovan Paulson who brings a completely different view on all things great and small. I hope you can tune in.
I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio, Radioplayer Canada, it’s available post-show on apple and spotify, and we tweet it out on X.
I haven’t been around here too much lately. Has there been any talk about the announced/rumoured European/college signings?
That was some impressive lock-down hockey. Love seeing two guys and what looks like dozens of sticks on a Golden Knight every time he comes near the puck. That was last-two-minutes-game-7-vacouver hockey, its the desperate Oilers. Its the best Oilers.
Add Ekholm, McDavid, Kane, and presumably Frederic to that effort, and this team can still do a lot of damage these playoffs.
Edmonton has a deep enough defence, but they are only successful when the forwards buy in. Waves and support. Every loose puck pops out to an Oiler who turns it the other direction, safely and quickly up ice. Keep the gap tight. Its simple but this, and a determination to clearing dudes from the front of their own net, is what separates the Oilers from other teams. Last night we saw how they can suffocate but it was not perfect: one rush goal and one screen goal from the point demonstrated a slight lapse in either.
Oilers win statement game.
Now 5-2-1 in my mini 16 game stretch to the playoffs mini season. Oilers look good if they can enter the playoffs with 20 points from this last 16 games.
Next game against the mighty California Golden Sharks.
Brochu gets his 3rd consecutive start for Bakersfield, yet again only letting goals get past him. Unfortunately, the Condors only muster 1 goal, scored 15 seconds in on their first shot of the game. They only manage 13 shots the entire game.
Meanwhile BB is peppered 37 times. He now boasts a 0.937 save percentage, which towers over the others. I am confident he can keep it up, given his resume. This should parlay into an NHL contract, I mean they signed 25 year old Cameron Wright last season after he scored a measly 12 goals for gawdsakes…..
Should read “only letting 2 goals get past him”
This is why sleep is very important kids…
Podkolzin with another great game, fantastic stuff.
Broadcast gave him the 1st star (well earned imo)…he was very good tonight
Great win, especially considering the Oil are without their best player and No 1 centre, their No 1 Dman and their No 1 goalie.
looking like some aren’t happy with the win.
I don’t understand how an Oiler fan wouldn’t be at least satisfied…..
Their #1 goalie played the game.
And Draisailtl is their best player…has been all season.
Draisailtl?
Correct.
So you and HH are expecting the McDavid extension to be for less dollars than Drai?
Drai is not the Oil’s No.1 centre
The Coach and Organization say otherwise.
Who are they?
What a game! I could watch that game over and over. Two great teams going toe to toe.
Authentic NHL hockey.
Huge win, love it! Not a great first period but they were dialed in after that. Clutch save by Picks and block by Nurse at the end to get the job done.
Picktacular!! #PlayLaBambaBaby
Pickard won the goaltending battle tonight.
That Pickard is winner, I’m telling ya
Stop writing things that might upset Stuart Skinner when he reads it.
Wonderful effort.
Kapanen’s best game as an Oiler.
Bouchard, Walman, Nurse – all very good.
Nurse continues to play so well.
The two games he just strung together were very strong.
Everyone had high hopes for the big guy.
YUGE!
Saw Hyman good multiple times relieving pressure in the last 10 mins
Fantastic block by Nurse!
Arvidsson is NOT a player I generally think should be out there defending a lead with the goalie pulled.
Was it early June that Stauff mentioned as the timeline for a bunch of signings to be complete?
I think so and I note that Berezkin is available to be signed June 1.
The Oilers have moved a lot of draft capital Gene, you may see them even announce a couple of forward signings out of Europe here possibly in the next 48 to 72 hours. It would not surprise me by say July 3 or 4th, Edmonton has added a combination of 6 or 7 players, maybe 4 forwards and a couple of defenceman,at minimum, from either Europe or the NCAA
-Stauffer 2nd intermission with Gene P
Thanks – would have been more notable vis-a-vis Berezkin if it was June not July – couldn’t remember what I heard.
Wasn’t Korczak one of the Sweathogs?
“I’m SO confused…”
Sure would be nice for the likes of Janmark, Brown, Jones, Kap to score an insurance goal…..
Condors can’t hold on – give up two third period goals and fall 2-1.
10th straight win for Abbotsford.
Kap with a great offensive play (pass to Arvy) and a big defensive play there.
He knows his lineup spot is in great jeopardy.
Henri should not play another shift with this team. He floats around all three zones. That was on him entirely
Welp
I had the Oilers chances of closing this out at 5%
FFS
take the L.
Not a good goal for the goalie to let in – got to fight through the traffic.
It’s true. It’s also true that Pickard had easily been the best goalie to that point
There were 7 guys screening him. Hardly on the goalie.
Much, much better period.
watch for the refs to get themselves involved in the 3rd
Summarizing!
Nathan Day has been arrested and charged with grand larceny. He stole Game 3, stopping all 38 shots he faced as Flint prevailed 2-0 to close the series gap to 2-1. He was named 1st star as he earned his first career playoff shutout.
O’Reilly, like the Yardbirds’ train, kept a-rollin’ all night long as he put up 2 + 2–including a shortie–in a London victory. He was also named 1st star as the Knights took a 3-0 series lead.
For the third straight game, Wakely assisted twice but Barrie lost Game 3 and now lead the series 2-1. Also had a game-high 6 SOG.
Clattenburg assisted on a shortie and had a team-high 5 SOG.
Akey and Nicholl were denied soup though, according to ace reporter Todd Macallan, the latter was 13-of-16 on the dot.
Prospecting takes a break until Thor’s Day.
Highlight pack from Day’s whitewash:

Skinner completely off the powerplay after a successful convert??
We’re winning 3-1 *in Vegas.
I trust the strings the coach is pulling atm
SOLID
road period
They counted similar play for Michkov so.
Kapanen rewarding his coach with this evenings effort.
BOOM!!! Arvi doesn’t quit!!! Great pass by Kap and pick off by Rico!
Garvidsson goal.
On its face, that seems like a very silly challenge, no?
Cassidy let emotions get into the equation. I do really hope the Oilers have another questionable goal count because VGK can’t challenge. That would be an extra kick to the junk
goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooal
That’s a goal. Puck was loose and he put his stick between his legs where the puck was loose.
it won’t count, I bet
Petty interference challenge
Zero part of me will be surprised by TOR overturning the call
Suprise!!
The Vegas D shoved the puck under the goalie…Arvy poked at the loose puck
this should count…but…
The ref probably should have whistled it, but they didn’t for Pickard right away. And because he didn’t whistle, I’m not sure what he was disputing. Unless he felt that he pushed the pad across the line, which clearly wasn’t the case
All puck.
Goal + powerplay should be on the way.
Should be a good goal but…
Yes!!!
Arvidsson…!
Hill ain’t happy…
Atta boy Arvy – way to stick with it.
Leon the LionHart’d.
BOOM!!! Drai from his office! Great McDavid like pass by Nuge!!!
Wow Nuge,
Just wow
Oh that was a sweet pass by Nuge and a bullet from Drai!!!!!
Amazing patience
Leon from the killing floor
WHAT a pass by Nuge – that fake and then the pass – wow.
Looked like (another) penalty to me
5 on 3…c’mon boys
Is that Hymans 3rd or 4th offside? I’ve played with guys like that and it’s frustrating…
Brochu with 23 saves through two and the Condor lead 1-0 (only 10 shots taken).
Who the heck is Brochu?
Ok… Just catching up. I know who he is now. He looks to have ok stats. Does anyone have a take on this guy?
Call up from the ECHL to fill in for Rodrigue.
Won two starts on the weekend and is leading in his 3rd tonight.
