It’s morning in Oilers Nation. Maybe. The club is playing a solid two-way game and it appears to be repeatable. Oh sure, there are moments when they’re in chase mode in the defensive zone, and we know from years of observation that results in a goal against, a penalty, or a great stop by the goaltender.
There are things we’ll watch for as the month rolls along, including Connor McDavid’s shot total and his five-on-five outscoring. We’ll want to see how well Darnell Nurse is playing, and if Brett Kulak can gather his game and deliver as expected. The Matt Savoie two-goal game offers promise, as does the December schedule.

If the Oilers win today, it sets the team up for a patented Kris Knoblauch winning streak. More than anything, this team needs a substantial run of points in every game, at least through Santa’s visit.
We are reaching the point where the Oilers should send David Tomasek down, get Trent Frederic right, and recall one of the exceptional forwards who are impacting things in Bakersfield. Frederic’s foot speed this season (34.96 kph) is slower than last season (35.48 kph) and the playoffs in the spring (35.94 kph). He was 36.88 (92nd percentile) in the 2022 playoffs, and may never get back there. I know high ankle sprains take time, and this was known at the time of the trade (Rachel Kryshak was on the Lowdown at the time of the deal quoting a doctor about the worry). Frederic gets ripped daily by fans, but for me this is an Oilers thing. Management and coaching should acknowledge the issue and have him work through it without costing the team.
If the Oilers run Nuge-McDavid-Hyman as the top line, and Podkolzin-Draisaitl-Savoie as the second trio, then getting more goals for than against on the third line lands at the feet of Adam Henrique. His line had a fine night on Thursday, with both Andrew Mangiapane and Mattias Janmark (as well as Henrique) showing up on the scoresheet. In 18 minutes together, the line is 1-0 goals with a 69 percent expected goal share. Watch for them tonight, if they have another good game I’m going to call them ‘The Grumpier Old Men’ line.
CONDORS

Ike Howard scored last night, he’s such a talented player. Some things to learn without the puck, but you can see the talent pretty much every night. If we exclude him from the possible recall list among forwards, I would go with Quinn Hutson, Josh Samanski and Roby Jarventie. That’s a center (Samanski), a right winger (Hutson) and a left winger (Jarventie). The Condors have NHL-ready talent today. That’s real progress from previous seasons.

I wrote about the recall list at The Athletic yesterday, article is here. The Oilers have one prospect matriculating (Damien Carfagna) and another building a foundation (Akey). I’m encouraged by both, and starting to feel good about Artro Leppanen’s game. He’s been posting offense since arrival, but the outscoring at even strength is now coming along.

Connor Ingram is not shooting lights out in Bakersfield, but there’s a chance we see him before the deadline. Bowman brought him in as a possible solution, so the club should see if he can fill that need before making a trade.

Bouchard under 21 minutes, McDavid under 19 minutes and Drai barely over 16.
3rd line was good against Seattle, well, their numbers are NOT pretty tonight!
Score effects?
the first line gave up 2 goals in the 3rd, pretty sure they weren’t a problem last night

Using tie-breakers, Oilers slide into playoff spot by a hair
(4 regulation wins in past 6 games, matching their RW total in the first 23 games, helps)
Great game. Just realized that Oilers will be back doing a 9 games in 13 nights grind from Buffalo through Calgary. Sounds like a lot of teams are going through this to make time for the Olympics?
Any ways, it would be nice to take care of business at home against Buffalo and Detroit this week and overcome the fatigue that will set in by Dec 23.
Save McDavid and Draisaitl, the two week Olympic break will do this team good. With the depth of their teams, I cannot imagine McDavid and Draisaitl playing more than eighteen to nineteen minutes a game. I don’t think that they’ll get overworked. Hopefully.
You’ve not been watching the coach.
Key to managing 97/29 minutes is getting out to a lead and not chasing the game.
Wow, we’re finally tied with Chicago!
Lazar grabbing the reigns of that 4C hole.
Niederreiter trying to put his stamp on the game at the… 0:00 mark. 🙄
You know he’s a player that I always wanted in Edmonton. I’ve always had time for his game.
Ugh on Skinner’s footwork there. Can’t go post to post like most butterfly goalies can.
Nope. He doesnt flare out the pads as well as most modern G. Looks like he tweaked something with that stumble
That’s the Frederic they thought they were signing. Hard to believe there’s been only a handful of those moments so far
Frederic’s best play as an Oiler.
Nice finish by Tomasek.
Great pressure by Lazar on that sequence too.
Three Jets went after Regula, two to hold him back while the third attacked him. You’d think that would result in three Winnipeg penalties, but the NHL has some other rationale.
As Regula gained the zone, known large person and literally nothing else Logan Stanley decided to punch him in the face, nada.
Idk man they must have a reso at the nino.
Have not missed that version of #2 for the past few weeks. Flashbacks
They should start shooting the puck from the slot again….
Beauty Winnipeg goal there.
The HNIC panel ribbing one another and I’m always here for it 😉
Wallstedt seemingly taking it on the chin tonight…
Helps when you layer traffic in front of him and shoot high.
It’s the same thing that gives Hellybuck issues.
Morrissey hasn’t been the same since the Smiths.
He on your Olympic roster?
Prime Morrisey is a hell of a D
Agreed. How Long (ago) Is Now? 😏
Heaven knows they’re miserable now
Michaels trying to get fired by HNIC?
We can but hope.
Summarizing!
No soup was awarded on this night. Can’t remember this happening with this many players before.
The only player yet to play this weekend has a chance to avenge them on the morrow.
Any one else see the muppet wearing full flames silks behind KK?
My 12 year old son just exclaimed, “what a dink!” I did not correct
Dont give it attention maybe it’ll go away.
Rage Baiter.
Cheaters
That was a SNIPE by Sheifele – if it was onside.
It wasn’t.
What’s their record with these unis?
The way they’re playing, they should petition the league to wear them all the time. Home and away.
2-0 I believe.
Looking like the Globetrotters when they want to this game
McDavid one shift away from spinning the puck on his finger…
Podz does not miss a shift!
Why are our broadcasters making excuses for Winnipeg rather than praising the Oil
Inferiority complex combined with being bad at their jobs.
Credit the Oilers structure – getting in shooting lanes and committing when the Jets do have the puck in-zone, even up by 5.
Great start & I’m glad the preseason is over now it’s December (ht to Courtney Theriault).
Sorry, I should have stated it that I did not have Savoie & Lazar both scoring tonight. Good on them both & hopefully quiets the Savoie naysayers.
Hutson with a nice zone entry and quick dish to Samanski who one-touches to Howard who SNIPES from the high slot.
4-0.
Do you watch 2 TVs side by side?
Condors game on the work lap top beside me.
It was quite the scene when the Jays, Condors and Oilers were all playing at the same time e- triple screen.
lol I admire your dedication
Pre shot puck movement baby!!!
If Janmark didn’t miss a bunch of time he’d be the bottom 6 leading scorer, great shot Lazar.
He’s been much better this season than last.
He was playing a new position last season and did Admirably well at.
Hockey’s fun again in Edmonton.
What’s with all these controlled entries?
Transition game has been superb
Whoa, 4th line goal (4th line was a bit caved in the first period if you can believe it).
Nice snipe by Lazar – not a great goal on the rookie.
Nice pass by Janny!
Podz forechecks like Jesse P but has a much better game
Higher hockey IQ
After one period, MoneyPuck says McDavid has an individual attributed xGF of +0.78. In one period. RNH +0.45, and all Jets players together <0.4.
It’s rare for a player to have that impact over 3 periods, let alone 1. MacKinnon had an individual xGF of +0.4 today, for context.
Oilers are feelin’ it… showing some real confidence. It’s swagger time in Oilers Country.
Very nice save by Skinner up 1-0 leading to the 2-0 goal. We don’t get those swings often enough, so credit when due
We’ve wondered for 6 years; the answer is yes, the Jets are all Helly.
Toews has apparently been poor. And the loss of Ehlers was not accounted for.
Jonny Toews was everything you want in a hockey player in his time but the Wpg gamble on him was a sentimental one, hometown hero and all that. Perfetti is no Ehlers.
For all the handwringing around here, having an elite G is a two-edged sword: covers a lot of sloppiness and sewers the team confidence when injured / unavailable.
That being said, these are the Oilers so a 4-0 lead after 1 is no sure thing.
Ya just saying that it’s not just the goalie. Comrie’s save percentage coming into the game was better than Skinner’s, for example
Bah. Playing mostly against that weak sauce Central Div 😉
Price covered up the fact that the Canadiens were icing awful teams for over a decade – even getting them to the finals one year. He was probably the only reason Bergevin held his job as long as he did.
Ehlers was a hell of a player for the Jets
OK. So, where have these Oilers been hiding for most of the season?
Probably like last summer. Intense summer recovery / off time, slow to get back into it.
Not a smart play by McDavid – no need.
Hope they kill it!
I agree. Someone was going to take a penalty, so better it be the player who catalyzed this period
Connor just figured Comrie would go out to the edge of the crease. But Comrie saw him & backed into him.
So really who’s interfering with who there. It’s Comrie’s crease though not Connor’s.
It created the opportunity for exactly what happened. Not a big deal but, up 4-0, no need to do that.
I felt that at first as well. On the other hand he didn’t injure goalie and deciding to play like that is playoff hockey. That I like
I take it that Winnipeg is tired, but in this light the Oilers are quite terrifying.
I like that they are dominating this team as they should
Winnipeg is tired and injured near the end of a long trek and they looked terrible. Sound familiar?
If we can give the Jets slack, maybe we can contexualize the Oils early season struggles a bit too.
Oil are rolling, can’t wait for Roslovic to come back and Howard to boot a bottom 6er.
Bouch🚨🚨🚨🚨rd!
If this were NBA Jam, the announcer would be screaming about Leon being on fire.
He’s just rolling.
I think 2 other Oilers could have scored before the Bouchard bomb.
What an absolutely beauty of a keep by Nuge.
This is the McDavid line I remember. Every shift is a legitimate chance to score.
I don’t think I’ve seen him look as dangerous, shift after shift, like this in a few years.
And Leon equally dominant
Nuge wil finish tonight with a min of 22 points in 20 games.
That’s not good enough for some trolls, who declared a preference for Holloway
Ten minutes in and they haven’t even shown us Stu’s alt mask. Ice tilted so far!!
3 goals in EACH of the last 4 periods
The Showtime Oilers have arrived in time for Christmas ..
Reja, you’re rich.
Ekholm contributing to the offence again is big.
lol. Reja gets paid
Wait for the Frederick goal
