It’s just after 7 Christmas morning. Nimbus (the black cat) emerged from under the bed when I turned the bed side light on a couple of minutes ago, Luna (the multi-coloured cat) will be waiting in the kitchen for treats that are maybe an hour away. Ziggy is at the end of the bed, her spot for coming on 15 years now. Clifford, the big dog, had his usual evening. Kicked off the bed to give the humans a head start on space and covers, he jumped up when we were sleeping (Clifford is smart) and won the cherished middle part of the bed by the time I woke up. Clifford is a big dog who thinks he is a small dog. Hilarity ensues.
Karen is sleeping next to me. She snores, but it’s a quiet, cute snore. I like to hear it because then I know she’s getting a good sleep. Karen takes less room on the bed than Clifford, is wicked funny and easy on the eyes. She’s way smarter than me and calls me on my crap, which is good because I need it. We have been married for three months now, this is our first Christmas as a married couple.
The kids are in good places, both get today off but my daughter works tomorrow. They love Karen too, so it’s been an easy transition save for organizing all the boxes, furniture, roll ends and remnants. We probably won’t have that straightened away until spring.
When I married Karen, I gained two more kids. They are like their Mom: smart, funny and kind. I’m looking forward to getting to know them better as time moves along. Kids keep you young, you know. It’s important to be in their lives, and to embrace the influence.
I’m feeling good this Christmas. I have beautiful memories of my life past, and will never forget those wonderful days. The human spirit is capable of many things, time and distance has allowed me to heal. I am genuinely surprised at my good fortune now. I found love and goodness in a moment of great anxiety and trauma. I am a lucky man.
I’ve tried this year, and will again next year, to find common ground with people who do not share some of the things I hold to be true. It seems to me that the differences we have, no matter how severe, should never reach a point where we allow ourselves to cross the line into what we know to be poor behaviour. i’ve often been told I’m too politically correct, but when you ease into those waters it comes at a cost.
I have people in my life that I loved and cared for before Covid, before the communication fault line became so wide, that I still love now. Compromise is not a popular word, but I don’t see much good coming from living our lives separate from each other, allowing anger and fear to fuel our verbal. The words we say today do not resemble the words we said 15 years ago. I’m absolutely certain we are doing harm to ourselves and each other by distancing from those with whom we do not agree.
So I’m going to start with the easy things, items we have in common and agree are good. If we can communicate on enough things, perhaps the jarring realization that we hold very different views on some things will ease.
We are human, we have way more in common with each other than we’ve shown in the last year. I’m going to try to make things a little better this year in my own way. I am tired of losing friends over what can be overcome in a quiet conversation. I hope you’ll join me.
Finally, call your Mom. Tell her you love her, and have been thinking about her. Make her feel special, she earned it way back when she was changing your diapers. When you’re done making Mom feel great, ask her to put Dad on the phone and do the same with him. The key word for me in 2026 is love. Love is love, no matter how it manifests itself in your life. Embrace the good. Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas everyone.
Merry Christmas LT, and all ye who gather in this most eclectic and renowned of taverns to grace this obscure corner of the ol’ Al Gore.
Here’s to cheating, stealing, fighting, and drinking.
If you cheat, may you cheat death.
If you steal, may you steal a woman’s heart.
If you fight, may you fight for a brother.
And if you drink, may you drink with me.
Sláinte mhaith.
Hope everyone had a Christmas day surrounded by loved ones, who all have full bellies from too much yummy food. Seasons greetings Lowetide gang!
We are fed a steady diet of outrage, served up on screens we hold in our hands, designed to make us look at our neighbors with suspicion rather than solidarity.
Division isn’t an accident it is a strategy used to gain and hold power. Mobilizing a base through anger is efficient. Fixing things arent in the best interests of people in power. Inciting a culture war costs nothing and works instantly. It’s cheap fuel.
They dangle a controversial social issue in front of us to keep our eyes off them. While we are busy fighting our neighbours over ideology, the cost of living climbs and services crumble. We are attacking each other, not holding leadership accountable.
Division hardens partisan loyalty, and people become entrenched in winning some imaginary battle.
I reckon, things will shift in the future, when the divide between a capitalist society, and people’s ability to prosper becomes an insurmountable chasm, and politicians can no longer pretend they’re serving the people while protecting the 1%
I wonder if Bowman has talked to Fleury and how close he is to teaming up with Jarry for this Cup run.
I think he’s fairly content at this point with Jarry and Ingram. Pickard is likely being waived once Jarry is healthy
Fleury might have been planning D if Ingram was a flop coming out of the gate.
that could be the case. Still early on both Ingram and Jarry but so far so good.
Why would they want to sign Fleury – he was not good the last two season and not good in his last two playoff season (2 games and 1 games, with brutal results).
Weren’t you on about Jarry/Ingram winning this team multiple cups like as recent as yesterday?
i bet Bowman has talked to him. So far so good on Ingram but thr jury is still out. The days of being happy to have average below average goaltending are finally over.
Reports out of Sweden that Tomasek is heading back to the SHL.
I’m surprised he’d give up what’s left of his U.S.$1.2MM.
Maybe the team in Sweden is making up a good portion of that to have him play for them
Could be but that would be an insanely large capital commitment generally not seen from SHL teams (to my knowledge).
I agree but he has about 1/2 of the 1.2 by now so it may not be as painful for him if the Swedish team can take a bite out of the remaining $600,000
For sure but its tough to see Farjestad pay like double the league top salary for him to pay half a season, right (less than half a season probably as the European leagues start earlier).
I’m speculating a bit on the SHL salaries.
Yes I agree. Maybe he just misses playing a premier role on his team like he is used to . Im sure he is financial secure .
Coming to Canada as an adult ( I know he played in junior) is a big culture change so that may be a factor especially if the family is involved in the decision making process. It will be interesting to hear the exit interview if the rumours are true .
Some things are worth more than money
Sure – still surprised.
Who would of ever predicted this? Apparently just 1 old dude on Lowride. Nobody in the mainstream called this one. Same goes for Clattenburg playing NHL games this year. I’m batting well over Mendoza line if in fact he heads back or gets traded instead of eating all by himself in the back corner of a shady Bakersfield Cafe.
Free Howard for heavens sake stick him with Leon and Podkolzin watch him get 18 goals in the remaining games.
The Oilers are 8-2-1 in their last 11. Leon is over 2 P/G in this last 10+ game. Howard is continuing to develop the skill-set that will be required to play in the top 6 in the NHL and that will give him the best chance to reach his potential.
Why would they do this now?
I want a Cup. I want a Cup where our Goalie is considered for the Conn Smythe trophy. We are in a new era. Bowman finally fought back the clan and mercifully pulled the chute and as a result we are 5-0 with the new guys.
From December 6: We are reaching the point where the Oilers should send David Tomasek down, get Trent Frederic right, and recall one of the exceptional forwards who are impacting things in Bakersfield.
https://lowetide.ca/2025/12/06/jets-at-oilers-g29-2025-26/
From December 20: I remain a little baffled by the organization’s stubborn approach to David Tomasek. The general manager is pretzeling the roster for Tomasek, a player the coach plays sparingly. Tomasek has dressed for 63 percent of Edmonton’s game and is averaging nine minutes a night at five-on-five. Tomasek is scoring 0.92 points-60 and has a 38 percent goal share.
https://lowetide.ca/2025/12/20/oilers-at-wild-g36-2025-26/
I mentioned right from the moment Tomasek was signed that he probably had a handshake agreement with Bowman which included no minors if things aren’t working out. If that happens trade me to a team that was interested in the Summer and if all else fails I’ll head back home where I’m a rock star and I can honestly say I gave my NHL dream a chance. Tomasek gets traded when the freeze ends or he goes home.
If this does in fact pan out, you certainly were a stone alone in predicting Tomasek skipping BAK and heading back to the SHL loudly, and often, from the earliest of opportunities. Have to hand it to you, kudos.
However, if we’re factoring in all of your predictions, including so many book its that never came to pass, you’re closer to the Mason-Dixon than the Mendoza.
I’m 1975 Pete Rose. I hope Clattenburg injury isn’t serious like the one that ended Brett Callighen career. Callighen-Gretzky-MacDonald were rolling like a freight train up until the injury. Anyhow I was on the Clattenburg express going back to his Junior days. Next long shot will be Poulin.
Well that solved that problem I guess.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained … it cost the Oilers nothing to see if there was any juice in Tomasek’s game.
Logos is one of the foundational principles of the West, and is firmly rejected by the post-modernism that forms the philosophical basis of the new left.
Today is the day the West and what’s left of it celebrates the Logos -the Word- made flesh.
Most of us here, although I confess not all of us, still cling to blogs and comment sections because of a belief in the Logos of the sophists. We even named our sphere, the Oilogosphere – after it.
Make no mistake: to celebrate Logos on any level is a philosophical, spiritual and political statement and the enemies of Logos are many, popular and powerful.
in other news: Tomasek to the SHL.
https://www.vf.se/2025/12/25/david-tomasek-pa-vag-att-atervanda-till-farjestad-cc3ac/
Wow. Heady stuff for a hockey blog.
I suggest that the “new left” critique of Logos has more to do with historical/cultural use of Logos (word, law, “rationality” as having been defined by those in power. Modernism was a critique of tradition. Post-modernism, as best as I understand it, takes that critique one step further and questions everything (& nothing?). There are many who viewed modernism as of the left. And many who see post-modernism as the triumph of the neo-conservatives.
I am attracted to Walter Benjamin’s notion of “redemptive criticism,” finding in tradition (Logos, for example) things that are worth salvaging, even if they have in the past been used to subjugate and to reinforce traditional privileges and rights of exploitation. Take Christmas. For some simply a tale of magical thinking that justifies all manner of evils. For others, a moment to reflect on light and the power of love to undo or at least undermine all manner of evils. That is how I’m understanding (interpreting) this post by our good host. I also interpret his, what I would call “defence of civility,” in the same way. Civility and its codes have, historically, kept the great unwashed “in our place.” Civility has also afforded a way to be together —in communities, in our nations and between nations— without having carry and master the sword.
My apologies for the long response. I just don’t think this is a left/right thing. Or even a Logos/anti-Logos thing.
Thanks for stirring these thoughts on a quiet Christmas Day afternoon, as I wait for my beautiful and beloved Ruby-dog to slip into another realm.
The basis of civility is the golden rule, which is pretty much a univeral principle/value across the cultures and religions of the world. The woke have long disavowed the golden rule, with speech codes, compelled speech, collapsed Overton windows of what speech is permissable, cancellation for incorrect thoughts, etc. etc.
Christianity: “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12).
Islam: “None of you will believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself” (Hadith).
Buddhism: “Hurt not others with what pains yourself” (Udanavarga).
Hinduism: “Do not unto others that which would cause you pain if done to you” (Mahabharata).
The principle extends beyond religions to indigenous traditions, secular philosophies, and even Native American codes like “Respect for every form of life is the foundation.” The 1993 Parliament of the World’s Religions declared it a global ethic signed by leaders from 143 faiths.
Wokeism allows no space for discussion or debate or for compromise or finding areas of agreement. One either virtue signals that one is an complete and total ally, or one is the enemy.
Dissent means “exile”…i.e. the loss of a job or promotion, debanking, official ostracism.
When they say we should all just try to get along, they mean submission, not common ground or dialogue.
Their appeal for civility is a ruse.
I am civil and cooperate when necessary or when it is my obligation under the golden rule, with the knowledge and certainty that there is and will be no reciprocation.
You will know them by their fruits. Ripeness is all.
It’s hard to believe that there is so much hate espoused by wokeism- hypocrisy?
Ive always been amused at the rejection of “wokeism”, but now feel it’s just a word that lets me know how seriously a persons opinion should be taken on a matter.
What you’re actually talking about is free speech. Everyone still has that, but not free of consequences. Its the consequences for expressing politically incorrect opinions that you seem unhappy with. Frame it however you like.
Canada is mostly a moderate centre country sprinkled in close proximity of both sides of the political line, but social media is polluted with controversial takes by fringe bad actors trying to make that line a chasm. These exist on both sides.
People feeling silenced and oppressed is by design.
In regards to free speech, even though thats not technically a thing in Canada by law, nobody truly feels unable to speak their minds on a legal level. We do not have secret services that abduct you in the middle of the night for making your opinion on gender affirmative care known. But we do have a base that aims to embrace intelligence and compassion where possible, and reject a lot of the ugliness we have seen emerge from more extreme individuals.
Woke is a word coined by black people in the 30s, regarding being aware of racist forces and keeping your guard up. It now officially means an awareness of inequity, racism and other issues that the impoverished and underserved deal with.
It was co-opted by right wing movements in the 2010s to label people that didn’t agree with them regarding hot button subjects like George Floyds death.
Merry Christmas LT and everyone else on the blog. Even Matt S. if he’s here from The Athletic.
Thanks for the daily opportunity to join the community LT. You give us an opportunity to talk about a team we all embrace probably more than is actually healthy and give an outlet to our imaginations of what the team could be.
Please don’t stop and share all the numbers you’d like to share. Many of us love it, as you know some out there don’t but this is your place and can share whatever you like.
When’s the last time we had a top 4 Goalie with a SV% that was at .920 with a goals against of 2.00? Bowman promised me this Summer that he would fix the Goalie woes. It took awhile but he has come through with a 5-0 record so far. I have a sense that both new Goalies will thrive in the tough but fair Edmonton market. Our D is not that bad watch us climb the charts from 2nd last save percentage wise to mid pack strictly on the between the pipes upgrade.
Merry Christmas to everyone!! Wonderful words. Love is important. Be a light.
Bought the boys a team Canada jersey, Oilers hat and hockey sticks. 2026 is our year!! 💪
Merry Christmas LT. Thanks for being a morning tradition every morning in my life for the last twenty years. And for teaching me about analytics and human restraint.
I was able to start this company because of the early influencers on this blog and your concept of being constantly data forward.

Shout outs to gmoney, woodguy, mirtle, tulsky, and dellow if they keep reading.
A hockey blog that inspires a business startup. Love it! And congratulations. I had a look. Once upon a time I’d have looked deeper (when I was in marketing and startup development). Now I’m just happy to hear another story of random things inspire success.
Merry Christmas!
Division is political currency. Books have been written on it. Sowing it has never been easier for those with the money and power to benefit from it. If we put away media, social and traditional, we’d probably find most of us have a lot in common.
Merry Christmas LT. Glad love and peace are prevalent in your day to day – makes everything worth it.
The peacemakers and the peacekeepers both have roles to play. Almost everyone does – which role is most needed shifts with the times and the issues.
As times go on I have found that conflict delayed is nearly always conflict made worse rather than avoided – so those of us geared to deal with it will deal with it.
Stay warm, find joy, and be safe all! Thank you for being part of this place.
Merry Christmas to all!
Merry Christmas and Happy Festivus 🌲🎉🎄🎅 LT and all.
The holiday isn’t over until somebody pins Bookje!
Merry Christmas from Rio dos Cedros, summer home of the lady and her family. Warmest Christmas this Sask guy could ever ask for.
As I’ve seen, no matter where you are in the world, family is family, and that love is universal. Cherish it, whatever that definition of family is for you.
Merry Christmas all from the heart of the Red Menace in Calgary!
Merry Christmas Lowetideans from a sunny Squamish – the first time we’ve seen the sun in weeks
Best wishes to all – including the Oilers – in 2026

— Thanks for this. I’m in peak Xmas years : 2 of 4 kids still believe in Santa. Both sets of grandparents still alive and coming over and my sister her husband and her young boys. Primetime ..
Merry Christmas to our glorious hoste LT and everyone else. Have a happy and joyful day surrounded by friends and family.
However, sometimes love means throwing the moneychangers out of the temple, and not kumbaya.
Thanks LT. Many years ago I came here for the hockey. And stayed for the rest of what is this little patch of the old al gore.
It seems appropriate today that you remain such a skilled shepherd of this unruly flock of oily sheep. Cheers Al and all the rest of you. Have the best day you can.
Beautiful message as always LT. Your well deserved happiness and journey to it are inspiring along with your words.
Merry Christmas to you and all here.
George Harrison wrote Something about his wife Pattie Boyd.
This video is the only time you see The Beatles with their significant others, and it’s wonderful.

Merry Christmas all! Woke up excited to call my mom. This will be the second Christmas that I can’t ask mom to pass the phone to Dad anymore, that’s hard. But since he passed I’ve phoned my mom and sister more than I did before. At first to support them, but now just because I want to. I feel closer to them now than I have my whole life. Funny how that works. I think of it as one more great gift from dad.
What a beautiful Christmas message LT!
I have a bit of a quiet moment now, waiting for the chaos to begin. Buddy Jr. and Buddy Jr’s Girlfriend got here from TO well after midnight, so they’re not moving yet. Buddy’s Little Girl has been here for a few days now, curled up at the moment on the couch with Buddy’s Dog. And Mrs Buddy is still on the spin, making sure everything will be perfect for all of us.
Merry Christmas to all my fellow Lowetideans!
Merry Christmas LT.
I am very happy to read about your happiness.
One of our furry angels is spending her last days with us this Christmas. The woman I love, for keeping me honest among other things, reminds me to “be in awe of her, she loves so much.” Because love is, as you say, all there is.
One of my teachers says the first step to happiness is to be kind and compassionate. I agree, we will have our differences, but practicing kindness and compassion helps me to remember love even in places where it’s easy for me to feel frustration. I need that help. And I appreciate your words here, today. And the other day on the radio. Yours is a welcome and calming voice.
Merry Christmas to you and Karen, your children, your cats and dogs. You are making a difference.
🙏
Merry Christmas everyone. As you get older you really do learn to appreciate the little things in life. You also learn that time-health best the all mighty dollar 9 times out of 10. I still see a path for multiple Cup wins with hopefully our new and improved tandem of Jarry-Ingram.
Those are beautiful words LT. I too am happy that you are in a place of peace. It’s underrated how important that is in life. My family didn’t get home until 3am from my brother in law’s after Christmas Part 1 lol My girls are older now and still sleeping so I’ve made a coffee with a little Baileys and awaiting the excitement that comes with Christmas morning. My cat Miso just greeted me, he wanted to play when I got home, didn’t get to sleep until 4:30. Gotta love those little fur balls right. I hope that everyone has a day filled with family and joy. I truly appreciate this space. Have an awesome day.
Merry Christmas everyone
Merry Christmas to all, especially to my fellow lurkers who come here mostly for the wisdom of our host.
Let us indeed seek common ground, especially the higher ground where the light is better and the air is cleaner.
Wise words as always LT! Merry Christmas to all who reside here. May your 2026 bring you love and abundance of that which matters most.
I am feeling blessed and grateful as well this morning. Cancer came for a visit in 2025, but it brought me home from living in Saudi and more than anything it helped me to realize how lucky I am for all the beautiful people in my life who I love and am loved by. It is truly all that matters. I hope you too can count your blessings this Christmas season.
As Oiler fans, we have to realize how we have been twice blessed by ‘best ever’ players. Bearing witness to Connor’s December run will hopefully only be bested by Connor’s April/May/June 2026 run!
Wonderful words LT!!
Merry Christmas Al to you and yours! Thanks for the good reminder about our shared humanity on this Christmas day.
And there it is, my Christmas gift. Wise words LT. Fill your heart with love, it’s the only way to heal. So happy for you LT! So happy for this community! Merry Christmas all, enjoy your time with family and friends!
