One of the things that has major appeal for blogs and message boards is the debate over lines and pairings. In today’s GDT, you will read all sorts of discussion (and hopefully take part in it) about best pairings for tonight. Debate, discussion, back and forth. The first time I ever typed anything onto the internet, it was a debate over Daniel Cleary versus Dan Lacouture. You may find this hard to believe (or not) but I was wrong. Kim Gernack, who is now in heaven, won that round, and introduced me to the art of commenting online and respecting opinion.
It is fun to play along with the decisions of your favorite team, to argue the things you don’t like and remind others about things we called long ago. We all do it, this is fun! I have also received an education, from hf boards, other blogs, this one too, about the doings of NHL teams and coaches. I learned more from Craig MacTavish and his deployment of players during his coaching career than I had from anyone since Howie Meeker in my youth. MacT did some unusual things (ran Toby Petersen on the PP, others) but the man made sense in word and deed as a coach and there is not enough time in either of our lives for you to change my mind on it.
Edmonton’s current coach, Kris Knoblauch, has a lot of things in common with MacT when he coached the team. Knoblauch has advantages, beginning with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisiatl. Both men made the final as coaches, and Knoblauch has done it twice. Question: What would MacT do with this team?

A CONVERSATION
This is dumb. Cool, you may advance straight to the comments section.
MacT would never try Jack Roslovic at center, I’ll tell you that much. Are you kidding? MacT tried to make every swinging Dick a center. Chad Kilger? Spent hours with him. Marc Pouliot? MacT tried damned hard with him.
Since when it MacT the gold standard for Oilers coaching? Knoblauch is the best Oilers coach since MacTavish, but I’m not sure he is better. Today’s article is hopefully the start of a conversation.
You always liked MacT as a coach? I wasn’t thrilled with MacT’s power plays and he faded first-round picks like they were rancid meat, but the man could make a team hum five-on-five. That’s what Chris Knoblauch needs now.
So the Roslovic at center idea is a good one? I don’t think it will work, but the Carolina Hurricanes tried it and that’s a smart organization. It’s worth a try.
What would MacT do? I have no doubt that he would run Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as the No. 3 center. MacT liked to run three strong centers and the third guy (Michael Peca on MacT’s best team) was more like the first guy in terms of minutes played in some important games. He ran Shawn Horcoff the most in 2005-06, followed by Jarret Stoll, then Peca, then Marty Reasoner until he was traded. That’s a classic MacT center depth chart. Reasoner was a helluva player. He could impact the game across 200 feet.
The great thing about saying that about Reasoner is it’s clearly a lie but most people won’t remember him. In 2005-06, the Oilers finished -3 overall at even strength. Reasoner was +12. He could play, and he dominated the soft parade that year. I wish they hadn’t traded him at the deadline.
MacT would fade Savoie and Ike Howard more than Knoblauch does! I think MacT would use Savoie a little more, actually. If a young player showed he could be trusted, MacT would play him over established guys. Pisani over Cleary is one example, but there are countless others. I don’t think Howard in the AHL would be a problem for the old coach, he would want him to arrive in the NHL with sufficient discipline. Howard, who is a sublime talent, still blows the zone often.
What would MacT’s lines look like? I wrote about this at The Athletic today. I wrote about the two best No. 3 lines for Edmonton 25 years ago. I think MacT’s third line would include the smartest center available (Nuge), with a filty winger and a two-way type who could score. That would be the template.
Who is the filthy winger? Trent Frederic. He’s not skating as well as he did two years ago, but there are good signs there. He’s also not confident now, I’m glad they’ve moved him off center. Frederic, when healthy and playing his best, would be a terrifc third LW on the Nuge line. I’m certain of it.
Who is the two-way type? It has to be a young winger. Matt Savoie is the guy I would try first, he’s so smart and won’t give up on a play. He’s shy offensively at five-on-five, and if the third line is going to work someone will need to help drive it from the wing.
Who would MacT try? Now we reach the purpose for today’s exercise. I think MacT would figure out a way to push Quinn Hutson into the lineup on a third line with Nuge and one of Frederic or Vasily Podkolzin.
MacT hated rookies! Shawn Horcoff played NHL games as a rookie pro, age 22. The coach also employed older rookies like Dominec Pittis (25) when the incumbents were found wanting. Brought an entire line to the NHL in 2000 fall. MacT was very good at increasing the talent pool by trusting unproven players who thrived at five-on-five. He faded power-play specialists and indifferent checkers. I think he’d elevate Hutson this year, maybe Howard later in the year.
What about defense? MacT ran his best heavily, something he shares with Knoblauch. MacT made his defensemen better, too. I could quote you chapter and verse about how much he improved individual players, but will pick just one. Igor Ulanov was an absolute masher on the ice, but MacT gifted him defensive finesse and it made all the difference.
What do you mean? I went to a practice or two during those years, and MacT’s drills were impressive. One drill I well remember involved the defenseman forcing the puck carrier to the outside while matching his speed at the blue line. Get the forward outside, then skate him to the end of the rink without getting to the net. MacT had Ulanov (and all the blue) do it without a stick. Disaster early, dreadful for a time, but Ulanov got it eventually. I’m always struck by this Oilers team acquiring good players from teams like Nashville and having them stand out immediately. Why does that happen? I think this Oilers team could use some fundamentals. Maybe there’s no time. I think Alec Regula could use some of those MacT drills.
Is Knoblauch a good coach? Of course he is. The team made it to the SCF in his first two seasons as coach of the team.
Is he better than MacT was? That I don’t know. MacT made his players better. I’m not sure Knoblauch does. Maybe no one can get better with small amounts of ice time, but every year the third and fourth lines are an issue. Sooner or later, you develop a past. Knoblauch’s past in this area is not strong. He would do well to strike up a conversation with MacTavish.
On the Lowdown today, Rachel Kryshak and Jason Gregor are my guests, and we’ll talk NFL wild weekend, NBA, WJ’s and more. Noon to 2pm, Sports 1440 and You Tube.

What are the Edmonton Oilers’ options for an outscoring third line?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6922946/2025/12/29/edmonton-oilers-lineup-lines-stats-2025/
Calvin Pickard
0.861 SV % at start of game
0.874 SV% after game.
Just needs 88 more saves without letting in a goal to get back to 0.900
Couple more starts like last night and won’t be far off.
Important information on Ingram.
He is on emergency recall so he call play 9 games on emergency with no time limit before needing waivers – at the end of those 9 games, they can transition him to a standard call-up and the 10 game / 30 days clocks start then!
He can play up 70 18 games, potentially, prior to requiring waivers.
Check that: Jean Francois C. (right up there with Hart on CBA info) has challenged Hart’s intel with the following:
It seems, disappointingly, that JFC is correct as he’s followed up with CapFriendly intel on the exact point from a few years back.
Check that: Hart pushing back:
The original 2013 CBA, Article 13.5 Waiver Expiration, states in 13.5(ii) that games played while on regular recall do not count towards the 10 NHL games played while on emergency recall. At first glance I do not see any amendments in the 2020 or 2025 MOU’s to that particular article.
If anyone is interested the game is up now on Amazon Prime under the ‘sports’ tab from the home page, then “NHL”, then ‘watch replay” -so they had the game posted for replay about an hour after the game ended
Not as clean as Sportsnet +, where you can “restart” the game while it’s still on, pause the game, and fast forward to LIVE.
With the PRIME broadcast you’re watching it live, or you wait an hour after the game ends and then you can fast forward and pause
LateNiteOilFan- I’m curious if the replay is now available to you, or if you’re still getting an “unavailable” response
I started the game an hour late tonight and was able to fast forward the commericals and intermissions.
Last year on sports net plus, if the game has already started, it wouldn’t let me start from the beginning on my tv, only my laptop.
Oh, interesting, thanks
So it appears your hardware matters wrt the playback options- I have my Amazon app on the TV’s embedded software (the TV is 5 years old) it actually says onscreen the Pause/FFWD options are not available
I’ll check the upstairs TV next time as game is on Amazon – I’m running a new(ish) Firestick on that TV, I’ll see if I can join the live game late, and use the Pause/FFWD functions
Thanks, it’s not showing up at all now lol. I suspect it has to do with the regional blackouts. I watched the NHL condensed game this morning. 🙂
Wow the boys played a shitty game. Not sure if Calgary game was worse.
Still, who cares, they won!
Oilers first place in Pacific after 40 games just as we all predicted at the start of the year 😉
The Oilers are 15th in the NHL by points percentage.
Did you predict that?
This was a tongue and cheek comment based on the Oilers first half of the season. Oilers fans will admit we have underperformed and we are underwhelmed to date. However, despite this, the Oilers are in first place and are positioned well to win the division. Hope this clarifies the point of my comment.
Hey Spanky. He said first in the Pacific. Nothing about NHL or points percentage. Typical goal post moving from you.
You got beat up in the other thread but you heard the bell and came dancing over to this one.
#punchdrunk
You are the most popular poster on this blog.
Did you predict that?
That’ll be an important note for when the NHL changes their playoff seeding to league wide standings.
Someone is having a bad day and looking for a fight on the internet
ha. never fails
It should be mentioned that a lot of Pickard’s family members live in Winnipeg. He spoke about this yesterday in his interview after practice. Makes the win and his performance even more special for him and his family. The Oilers just put up a photo on Facebook of him with his family in the stands. Also, being originally from Moncton, I’m sure he’ll be featured on the Maritime Hockey 3 stars of the night.
Sabres 9 in a row.
I don’t think they can afford to trade Tuch
A playoff race -even if they come up short – is worth more to that fanbase than another draft pick
Yeah…I think they’ll keep him.
A playoff spot would be manna from in Buffalo.
Everything you touch turns to shit… leave the Sabres alone!
Agreed, I have a soft spot for the Sabres…we have felt their pain. They don’t need HH latching on and providing Sadams touch
.
is Jerk another alias for HH/ Fibonaci? I apologize for not hating 3very other team on this blog. I will cease to do so 🙂
I’m kinda cheering for Buffalo (after us, of course). Cold climate, good hockey town, deserved better in 2006, good organization for 50 years that still doesn’t have a Cup.
I could have (barely) tolerated losing to them in 2006. I still can’t tolerate having lost to Carolina.
You mean like the Avalanche?
They seem to be doing okay.
Like the blog you started that nobody followed.
Did it do okay?
Even a broken clock is right 2x a day.
Judging by all of your previous posts, you seem to have a soft spot for any team not named the Oilers. Replied to the wrong comment before, sorry. Hehe
Jerk please accept my apologies for confusing you with an actual jerk 😜
And poof! He was gone.
Yep, they will now lose the next 10 in a row….
Ugly but happy to take the win.
1st star – Jean luc!
2nd star – baby nuge. Team was totally flat before that fight. They need a Perry character (sad commentary when a senior citizen needs to be your emotional leader)
3rd star – bottom six as well as Lady Luck.
Keep waiting for 97 and 29 to realize that trying to play Harlem globetrotter hockey against tight checking, motivated and hard working teams is going to be a losing proposition the majority of the time.
Im sure KK is a smart guy and he is a nice guy (shared an elevator ride in LA last year) but becoming more and more convinced they don’t get over the hump with him behind the bench
Go Oilers!
Seconded
They seem to think they have to do it all themselves. Learning to trust – and use – the other players is the key. The two biggest decoys in the league. Deceiving the other guys should be easy for them, with a little practice
Can they send Mangiapane down to Bakersfield or does his contract not allow that?
Yes, they can assign him to Bako after he clears waivers
Let him ride the buses for a month maybe that’ll put a little pep in his step come playoff time
That only clears $1.15MM of cap space – there will be a $2MM plus dead cap hit for him while in the AHL.
He only stopped 41 of the 42 shots he faced. Only 41. He’s a terrible back-up goal tender, terrible.
Ha!
Credit due. Great goaltending. Winnipeg’s top line held off the scoresheet, contributions from the bottom 6. Nice win tonight.
Definite credi – it seemed like Connor had a good 6 medium danger looks – Pickard stopped them all.
Woohoo Oilers! Super happy for and proud of Picks. Going by NST only, the numbers look like complete domination by the Jets. Glad the scoreboard says otherwise.
Pickard number one and perhaps second star also tonight. Not a lot of rebound chances though.
Does he get the next start against a team that couldn’t score on him 2 weeks ago?
I would give him the next start. I think the coaches need to start rewarding wins with same lineup. Jones made one poor play but he and Lazar looked good together mostly. Frederic not fully where we want him to be but he is even looking a little better.
I go back to Ingram as he’s the goalie with the higher ceiling and the goalie they are trying to get up and running to see what we may have in him going forward.
They aren’t in a place where every 2 points are so vital that you have to go with the hot hand. There is room to run with Ingram and is no like he’s been anything but solid to very good in his own right.
Pickgram!
Take the points – on to NYE vs. Boston!
Picks has to be 1 st star!!!!!!
No-doubter.
He stoped all 13 shots against Boston 2 weeks ago. I think you gotta give him the next start both him and Ingram are playing basically for their livelihoods. It’s amazing what competition can bring out.
Two weeks ago, you waned to sign Pickard to a 2-year extension, 48 hours ago you wanted to sign Ingram for 2 years and run with a Jarry/Ingram for 3 cups and now its back to Pickard’s net.
GREAT game by Picks tonight – I go back to Ingram for Boston – we know who has the higher ceiling despite a VERY good game by Picks tonight, right?
Great work on the 5 on 6 face-off!
Very subtle play by McDavid to win the draw and then shake free.
#NEVERINDOUBT
.Jets waited forever to pull Helleybuyck
Jesus Drai, THAT back-pass at the blue line with a one goal lead and 5 minutes left?
Oilers a couple of breakaways tonight, by d-men, Bouchard and Ek.
Lines are in the blender tonight. Boys are not working well together to be first on pucks
Summarizing!
Neither Barnett nor Lewandowski incurred soup.
Barnett played 14:00, 4th among the 7 US d-men. Lewandowski at 17:51 was 2nd among German forwards.
From the little I’ve seen of the US, past the first game, and the intel I’ve read/heard, he’s one of their most trusted d-zone defenders and making his way up the depth chart (with Hutson out).
Thats good because our D man cupboard is pretty bare.
A bit, yes, but I have real hopes on Paul Fischer and I wonder if he might sign after his season is over in a few months…..
Perhaps Nikita Yevseyev as well but I think Fischer would be closer to the NHL.
Drais hasn’t returned from the Christmas break yet.
No he has not been good tonight.
4 th line gives up a goal. Time for a Connor goal.
Really just on Jones (well, Pickard with a weak play on the puck as it came through the crease) as opposed to the 4th line – in my opinion
Definitely the first poor play by Picks tonight
Good on Jonesy getting back but can’t mess with the puck in our zone. Crappy deal.
Oh, Max Jones – you can’t do that!
I can’t watch the game (not sure why this game is not available online in my area when I have a subscription), but surely being out-shot and out-chanced is not the plan for the third period?
It’s on Prime
It’s on Amazon.
Yeah it’s weird, I have Amazon Prime, was logged in and all the NHL games show up as “Unavailable” and this game can’t even be found. Too far gone to bother now but this has happened a couple times this season.
Are you in Canada or the US..or….?
NHL is only available to Prime customers in Canada
Canada (NS), I never had an issue last season.
Tiks looks great!
Sail on Calvin, for sure you will be claimed.
I’d say with Jarrys worrisome injury history that you don’t waive Ingram or Picks. May need all 3 through this year.. Mangi trade for a much lesser salary will be key to no more waiver losses.. Lazar and Jones looking good tonight and Roslovic as 3c as well.
If there is sufficient demand, Stan may be able to get a modest return in a trade, if it comes to that. Miles to go before we have to make that decision
Seems highly unlikely.
If they can move the contract clean for futures, I would consider that a big win.
I’ve missed the first and early second but, man, the guys are flying. Even the third and fourth line guys! Sure like Lazar not passing on hits. He and Jonesy on like can’t be fun to play against.
Connor and Leon are just a tick off. I’m thinking they’re gonna start clicking in the third.
Picks has been phenomenal!
Keep up the hard work and let the talent shine, fellas,
Scoring depth! Goaltending! PK!
Great first 10 minutes of that period – leaked chances for the rest.
Pickard very strong so far and the Oilers lucky with some missed nets and bobbles.
Special teams huge, as always.
Whoever identified Stastney, needs more rope.
Whoever advocated for Mangi needs to get the rope…..
I don’t follow the Preds.
Why on earth did they trade him?
Whoever found Stastney needs to go out and find us a 25-year-old 3rd line centre at league minimum for a 3rd round pick.
What a great skater! He’s the kinda guy that makes it look so easy. Hard to believe he couldn’t make it on another team. Crazy
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Who are the play by play guys on Prime? Roger’s needs to watch this and have all their announcers go to these guys school. Miles better than all the Roger’s guys and Miles times 1000 better than Louie and Jack (especially Jack, not sure if you could possibly be worse than him and that’s including Hrudey).
The play by play guy is actually calling the game. Uncharted territory for Oiler fans.
Surely you miss Jacks numerous stories????
The under 35 crowd loves Jack just go to the Oilers Reddit for proof.
I actually don’t have an issue with Jack. He’s just very different from most play by play guys.
Reddit isn’t real life.
Agree, what a great broadcast by prime. Jack makes me nauseous. He repeats stories and doesn’t call the play. He doesn’t know how to do play-by-play.
I’ve missed this version of Picks!!! He’s dialed in, tonight!
When did Eks get so mean? He’s had a burr in his saddle blanket lately. I could get used to it.
Calvin Scrivens
PP2 goal. Snipe by Roslovic! All the things that need to work outside of Glimmer twins coming to fruition this game. Starting with excellent goalering by Pickard!
file that last Pickard save under filthy
Roscoe P Coltrane!
Roslo has such a good shot.
Jack on the PP! Nice shot!
BOOM!!! What a snipe by Rosy!!! Great plays to get the puck to the net! Good things come when you do!
ROJACK SCORESMAN!!
A 4th line goal and a PP2 goal.
Great work by Savoie and great bury by Jack – welcome back Jack!
the fear of a scratch or trade makes players play better or they where due
Hard Work gets rewarded. Now let’s bury one!
Pickard and the line 4 boys saying not soooo fast for waiving or trading me!
Picard has been terrific so far. Have liked both Lazar and Jones lately.
Boom.
Now, to capitalize!
Janmark is having a great PK game to this point.
Yea but I wish he wasn’t getting so many opportunities! Have to stay out of the box.
He had a good game, to my eye.
These iPhone ads seem like they were designed by an algorithm to be as obnoxious as possible.
PPs 3-0 so far.
Need to kill this one off and then get a PP opportunity of their own.
Jones with a very opportunistic goal!
