This is the Vollman sledgehammer from mid-season 2016-17. I well remember the thrill of seeing this puppy the first time, it wasn’t like the first time I saw Ziggy (her brother had just been chosen moments before and the two had been separated, she was so anxious, poor little one). I digress.
The Vollman Sledgehammer (in this case) shows us Connor McDavid was Connor McDavid the moment he Connor McDavided into the NHL. Ridiculous graph. Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
The Athletic article today is about progress over the last 14 games for men like Adam Henrique, Mattias Janmark and Connor Brown. The article is here.

The Oilers 3-1-0 record matches my prediction for the month so far, and I have tonight as a loss. Minnesota has been a difficult visit at times over the years, because Mike Modano or Jacques Lemaire. Former Oilers winger Bill Guerin is the Minnesota Wild GM now, and he appears to be wicked smaht (he is from Wilbraham, Massachusetts) in roster construction. I’d like to see the Wild win Stanley, the fans in that state saw their beloved North Stars win after moving to Dallas. Most unkind.
THE PUCKIQ SLEDGEHAMMER!! (THUNDER SFX, DEEP MALE VOICE YELLING “FEAR ME!)

This is the defensive Sledgehammer for 2024-25, five-on-five numbers and all blue listed have played 200+ minutes. I did not parse this into elites, mid-level and gritensity bins, because we want the entire view. For the record, the ‘elite’ PuckIQ sledgehammer is basically Ekholm-Bouchard at the upper right quadrant with blue bubbles because they are the only pairing to play 200+ minutes versus elites. I have X axis as DFF percentage and then we have all levels of competition. What does it tell us?
Ken Holland made a brilliant trade for Mattias Ekholm while also limiting the team by being slow to give Evan Bouchard the opportunity to show just how brilliant he is at five-on-five. I know some are non-believers, as single events in games can have enormous impact while also being single events. If you read “when will Evan Bouchard stop making mistakes” your brain should immediately respond with “never, but his level of execution with the puck is elite and the biggest part of the story is how much he impacts the good with Edmonton” or something similar. Man, what a draft pick by Peter Chiarelli and Bob Green.
The Darnell Nurse-Brett Kulak-Troy Stecher experience will be a full chapter in the Oilers story during 2024-25. This is an unusual platoon by Kris Knoblauch, Paul Coffey and Mark Stuart and it is innovative and (so far) successful. It’s kind of amazing, really. I don’t discount the talent here, these are quality hockey players. Still, the impact has been incredible. Here’s the elite player card, I’ve relaxed the TOI to less than 200 minutes.

We see that Ekholm-Bouchard are clearly doing most of the heavy lifting, but we are also aware that Nurse-Kulak-Stecher are sans 97 and not that far down the graph (although averaging about 90 seconds less per game versus elites). This is music! Long live the PuckIQ Sledgehammer!! The third pairing is flotsam and Ty Emberson is protected bigly, but there’s much to like here from the top-five blue on the roster. Notice where these men land compared to 50 percent on the graph. So good. Now the forwards, this is including all levels of competition. Will McDavid still land upper right?

This is cherry. SO cherry. I included McDavid’s player card here becaue it’s le freak and the world should know. The PuckIQ sledgehammer slices and dices, but recognizes true greatness belongs top drawer, right side. Don’t tell the burglars. Leon Draisaitl is also supreme major here, a little different bubble than we saw in January of 2017. Podkolzin is a lucky fella and our man Nuge is doing a little walkabout but he’s still contributing. The third line needs to pull up their pants, but Adam Henrique’s jazz trio added Astrud Gilberto and things are looking better now. Here’s the forwards versus elites.

McDavid is King of Kings. What a player. Also, Draisaitl is king. Hyman is a king. Look at the kings!! If the Vollman sledgehammers from the past saw the Puck IQ sledgehammers of today, it might get ugly (it wouldn’t, Rob Vollman is a gentleman on the level of Bruce McCurdy). I hope you enjoyed the Sledgehammer review, there’s plenty I didn’t mention (Adam Henrique is doing a great escape on a motorbike in the elite sledgehammer) we can get to in the coming days.
At noon today, Sports 1440, we preview the Oilers-Wild game and talk about early-season trends that appear to be correcting. We’ll talk to Bagged Milk from Oilers Nation and spend extended time discussing the big deals from MLB’s winter meetings. Declanations will be MMA today and we’ll discuss the NFL weekend and Thursday night game. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio; Radioplayer Canada, we tweet out the show after it’s done and you can catch us on Apple and Spotify.
After watching Picard tonight, Oilers appear to have no problems going forward in goal.
Either one of the goalies can stand up long enough to win a cup.
Fantastic to see.

#Oilers Evan Bouchard will be reevaluated on Friday after he was sent flying into the post by Ryan Hartman late in the third period.
Bouchard had a slight limp postgame and soreness, but otherwise seemed to avoid the worst of it.

Had to watch on what they useta call PVR.
Heck of a game.
Many dull. dim, sad, sluggish ghosts exorcised. I’ll never not enjoy seeing Oil crush Calgary, Dallas, Minnie, or any of the Californians. Preds upon a time, but I feel that time has passed.
The sign of a coach over their head is when enough players regress
The sign of a good coach is when most of the players play better
Congratulations to Kris and his guys. Since day one it has been a progression forward. The slow start this season was 3 games. Forward ever since. It is really impressive
My thoughts turned to the Nuge tonight. Watching 29 dominate Hartman, so glad that when we need a stop gap #2 Center RNH is ready, willing and able.
Absolute domination by Drais at both ends of the ice. An unstoppable force of epic proportions. Too much?
Oilers have killed 28/31 penalties in the last 14 games and scored 2 SHG during that time, for a net -1. That’s approaching playoff level, and a big reason why I don’t think Brown is going anywhere when all the forwards are healthy.
And very possibly, Ryan for his face off ability. Props to him, cuz he was gold tonight.
Two forwards are coming out, so Skinner and Perry? Nuge, Henrique, Janmark, Podz, and Kapanen all PK as well and I can’t see the coach removing any of them. Arvidsson pj’s aswell, and a Healthy Kane will contribute 5×5 goals to superior to bench.
Appreciate Ryan, yet Bowman probably makes a move there.
We are truly blessed with talent, veteran and youth. Tough decisions ahead for sure.
Hope Bouch is OK
Big respect to Nurse; for getting that quick brace of points in the third period.
It’s now time to consider erecting a statue of Lowe+MacT, now the Oilers are looking like contenders.
Ok, after they win something.
I forgot about all of that heh heh
“The Mauling in St. Paul”
Just a total flex all night. 💪🏼
Nice game from Cal. Some big stops.
He was the goods

I love watching Podz, no quit, max effort on every shift. Reminds me of Kris Russell in that regard.
Draisaitl-Nurse-Brown are my picks for 3 stars, but there are so many options to choose from
Louie agrees
Molson’s all around!
Mine’s Budvar.
Called it: Nurse has gotten very good at calmly hold the puck from afar, identifying a shooting lane and slinging the puck toward the net. It gets through a lot, causes chaos. A nice wrinkle in his game. I wonder if he’s picking things up from Bouch — or Coffey.
Derek Ryan scores
The apocalypse may actually be upon us
DR is in, via Nurse.
Ok, that’s not ideal
Dear Tim Murray,
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts for drafting Sam Reinhart.
Signed; Oiler fans
A effin Men.
I mean, Tim Murray probably regrets trading away Sam Reinhart more than he regrets drafting him. Reinhart may not be Draisaitl, but he did score 67 goals last year.
It’s a little like drafting Hakeem Olajuwon at #1 over Michael Jordan. Pretty forgivable. Drafting Sam Bowie at #2 over Jordan? Oops, not so good.
It may be -20 in Minnesota but they certainty have a lot of fair weather fans jumping ship on their .750 team…
I love watching Podz, no quit, max effort on every shift. Reminds me of Kris Russell in that regard.
Looking Edmonton
And feeling Minnesota
Outshined, outshined, outshined, outshined
Oilers turn up with big boy hockey tonight.
I like Leon and Nurse, but the lower lines I don’t even care who they are look already like as if they understand what they are here do to. At the end of the period 2 Oilers players with mid 40’s for numbers looked sharp on the forecheck.
Not missing any of the last seasons rejects.
I want to run to my bookie and stick a ton down on Oilers to win the cup.
Then I’ll bet 100 every season until they do win and I’ll be sure to get a return on capital; just about the only chance I ever get lol
Perry with a couple of awful plays this period. Didn’t eat the puck on left wall in O-zone and MN turned it into a long shift in Oilers zone. Then his next shift he puts a quick pass to Bouch right in front on Oilers net with a MN F bearing down. Other than that it’s been a perfect game!
Hyman in the crease for 3 goals and no reviews. The apocalypse is officially upon us.
Slow clap. Well done sir.
I think the coaches have maybe either gotten through to the forwards or maybe it’s this game, but the way they are playing and getting traffic is awesome to see . And the better sticks
It’s just smarter and better and obviously very effective. Need to see it the next two games and beyond
Minnesota is taking a trip down beat down boulevard (Brooklyn 99 reference)
So it’s been years since we won a game in Minnesota and tonight we are kicking the s**t out of them. Wow!
That went off the glove/butt end of the MIN defender…that should be Stecher’s goal
Hyman with that deflection mentality.
Rub their noses in it!
What a shift!
Nurse with the great play at 15:30 using fancy footwork to completely alleviate the pressure with full possession behind the net and plenty of time to wheel. Brilliant
Objectively he has been Norris quality since working off his abbreviated pre season rust.
Leon doing his best I’m in Nashville impersonation
Draisaitl moves into a tie with Messier for 4th most 4 point games as an Oiler
Nurse has gotten very good at calmly hold the puck from afar, identifying a shooting lane and slinging the puck toward the net. It gets through a lot, causes chaos. A nice wrinkle in his game. I wonder if he’s picking things up from Bouch — or Coffey.
Tonight the Oilers game is resembling the win streak play. They are being very patient, keeping the puck and cycling it low, letting everyone have time to be in position and pinch with cover. It’s not a coincidence Nurse and Skinner have looked great lately, they thrive when they’re not immersed in chaos.
Is this the Oilers best game this year? Seems to me it’s right up there.
What a beautiful kicking of a game tonight.
This is Oilers serving the NHL with a masterpiece.
Tampa takes a 3-1 lead on Flames via the PP.
yawns.
Good for Calgary they got the first goal.
NSH up 3-0 on Dallas in the 3rd. If that holds the Oilers will pass Dallas in points and P%. The Stars, management the envy of the league…..
I think I’ll be forced to accept having Draisaitl plus this McDavid character plus Paul Coffey freaking coach…
Oilers whipped Dallas last year in the playoffs. I like Dallas a whole lot, too.
5-1 after 2 periods…
This game is really going to need HH to explain what’s going on.
I’m sure MIN has some injured “key” player(s)…or it was because of the schedule… or some other “logical” explanation 😉
Is that a wolf howl or a loon call when a MIN penalty ends?
Injured quail
Neutered loon…
Get selfish Leon – more goals!
Multi-point game for Podz – nifty pass there – love it.
Oilers were all the way up to 29th in PDO entering tonights game. With that Draisaitl goal they crawl a little bit closer to even.
Draisaitl 4 points back now of leading goals and points, sensational
The Eephus pitch by Draisaitl.
Lets not get carried away; HH will attest that the Wild are not a good team.
Oh you won’t see HH tonight. Hunkered down under the bridge.
Busy watching those superior Kings, or Dallas and their all world goalie Jake.
Disciplining goalposts in his basement
Stomp on these guys!
