Seldom in recent seasons have the Oilers faced a two-step without Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The front end is pure heaven and hell in the NHL, emphasis on hell. The Dallas Stars are not a clear favourite to emerge from the incredible Central, but that’s only because the collection of impact teams in the group is the largest in the NHL’s four divisions. Make no mistake, tonight is an extreme test for Edmonton. This team needs the double you and the opponent is an enormous hurdle.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN MARCH
- On the road to: CAR (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 1-0-0)
- At home to: ANA, MTL, DAL (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 2-1-0)
- On the road to: BUF, NJD, NYI, NYR (Expected 2-2-0) (Actual 2-2-0)
- At home to: UTA, WPG, SEA, DAL (Expected 2-2-0) (Actual 3-0-1)
- On the road to: SEA (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: CGY (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected results: 7-5-2, 16 points in 14 games
- March result: 7-3-1
- Oilers in 2024-25: 41-24-5, 87 points in 70 games
The March won-loss is fabulous considering just how poorly this team played in February. Despite the tough schedule, the team needs points from this week. I have Edmonton going 1-1-1 in the last three games. That would work out to 8-4-2, and the club would have exceeded my prediction.
HEROES
The Oilers will find out about themselves tonight, and in fact that process began when McDavid left the game against the Jets. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is on another level right now, so good to see. I think the Oilers could use a stolen victory from their goaltender, perhaps that is tonight from Stuart Skinner.
I’m fascinated by the difference between five top flight defensemen and four. The addition of Jake Walman gives Edmonton a completely different look. I remember when Craig MacTavish would go to camp with three quality blue and have seven above-average types by Valentine’s Day. Those were the days.
I know the world is a different place, but Stan Bowman needs to find Charlie Huddy 2.0 this spring or summer. Maybe his name is Jan Hejda, or Steve Staios, but this team needs a value contract. They need a $5 million blue who they can pay $1.5 million. Tough ask, but that’s the job.
The reason Bowman is in this position is the Blues offer sheet for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. I wrote about it here at The Athletic. Bowman can evaluate and acquire talented defensemen, he proved it at the deadline. I think Ty Emberson is worth bringing back, and like Troy Stecher too, but the ‘bubbling under’ group who will play next season in Bakersfield do not inspire confidence. I like Beau Akey, but would love to see the team bring in a couple of 22-24 Euros and then sign Luca Munzenberger. The great hope a year ago on the Condors blue was Max Wanner, and the club cut bait on him. Phil Kemp isn’t in the plans based on management’s actions in the last two seasons.
It falls to Bowman. He can start by signing Munzenberger and Marc Lajoie.
A busy day on the Lowdown, with feature guest Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal. We’ll chat about this week’s games, the Nuge and what the Bakersfield Condors need to add over the offseason. We’ll also chat MLB, as opening day is tomorrow, and about the NFL revolving door surrounding quarterbacks. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio, Radioplayer Canada, it’s available post-show on apple and spotify, and we tweet it out on X.
I’d like to see Pickard with the starts against tougher teams down the stretch. He’s outperformed Skinner for two seasons but with a softer schedule. Can he give us league average against playoff teams?
Same. Since the break, Pickard has started 4 games, 3 of which he has been excellent. Let’s see what he can do with a bit of an uptick in work.
Either way Skinner needs to be faded down the stretch. He’s been mediocre all season, and the team has been bad in front of him. Give Pickard some starts against good teams to test his mettle and give Rodrigue some starts to show if he’s ready for NHL shooters.
Good for the boys! Good 3rd period. Now I know Dallas is missing Heiskanen and Seguin, but if anything that game showed with McDavid, Draisaitl, Frederic, and Kane in the lineup we can absolutely win another series against them.
Hell of an effort in the third.
Please call up Rodrigue and put Skinner on the IR … he’s been a complete sieve this season.
Get some goaltending and they win.
Execute on Oettinger in period 1 and they win.
Got to find that focus in period 1.
Feels like a perrenial Oilers issue since I’ve been alive.
One thing I hope coaches are noticing is the fight in this team when opportunity is given to players other than just McDavid and Drai. In fact, pp and extra man has looked better without the extra pass
Agree with this. I think the over reliance on McDrai takes players out of the game.
Bouchard has been excellent this game.
Get Skinner the puck in the slot…only takes one.
Hy, man. 🙂
Way to go RNH to set it all up.
BOOM!!! Hyman from the Hyman spot!
No way they tie this game up
The crew found some confidence.
Uncle Rico eating some steak.
Oilers showing some serious heart tonight, despite the circumstances.
BOOM!!! Time to move Rico to the first PP!
Jones needs to run him. Simple as that.
Why wouldn’t teams run our goalies? Second time results in a couple of gentle helmet taps. Embarrassing.
Why would teams want to run our goalies?
A smart team would let them keep doing what they’re doing.
Someone needs to earhole Oettinger. Send a message already.
Maybe just a little fly by nudge. Let him know you coulda…
That’s a bad even up call. Protect the goalies ffs
Love how our aggression is to hold Steel on the ice after he hits our goalie.
And we get a roughing for that. Unbelievable.
Tomorrow id give Ekholm the rest he so obviously needs.
pairings: Nurse Bouch, Kulak Walman Stecher Emberson
Scorey Perry is awake.
BOOM! Good stuff, Perry! No shut out. Up yours, ott.
Very clever little play by Walman to intentionally shoot it a bit wide
Scorey Perry!
Podkolzin is a funny choice to take shots on Picks to warm him up. I guess Tobias Rieder was unavailable on short notice.
That didn’t look good.
Ek in the picture tonight, not a good game. Bouch very soft coverage a couple of times not helping for sure. Sigh
Savoie bagged in OT and takes a tripping penalthy.
Boys kill 90% of it off but finally surrender the winning goal.
Big point.
Rodrigue played well.
Time to call up Rodrigue. Put Skinner on the IR and find out if the kid can give us steadier goaltending.
This game turned when the Oilers didn’t score on the back to back PPs in the first.
Did you see the saves Oettinger was making.
Score a couple on them and Stu hold it at 4 with some support from the D. That’s what I would like to see in the 3rd. Just to show em ya can.
Condors in need of points, fighting for their playoff spot, take the division leader to OT.
Hope to get the 2nd point.
A sub 800 save percentage is indicative of at least one problem and likely several more. Zero goals on 27 shots is also an issue.
LAST 13 starts Skinner is: 2 games in 900’s, 9 games in 800’s and 2 games in the 700’s. This is Jack Campbell bad! Maybe even worse.
Dallas currently running double the rate of expected goals.
Oilers currently losing yet the deserve to win rate meter favors them.
Classic mostly goalie victory for Dallas.
I really don’t know how Skinner lost his mojo.
From a Calder & Vezina level during his rookie season to the Stanley Cup Finals…and now this season has been a complete world turned on its head type of switch in performance.
However, why are we cursed with the first shot goals, the goal drought ending goals, the rookie’s first goal goals, no matter which goalie or team we have our, year after year?
It makes no sense other than that being simply how the Universe aligned.
Very very uneven performance even then. Can be very good and then very bad for stretches. He could figure it out but needs a quality stablemate to cover the bad periods. May yet become a good NHL goalie but sadly the team is win today mode.
They need to put Pickard in to start the third.
At apx 11:30-midnight, the Oilers will fly to Seattle and Pickard will play tomorrow night in Seattle.
Skinner is to finish this game.
Picks can start getting warmed up for tomorrow night in Seattle .
You got your wish!
Will goalie coach Schwartz ever be fired?
Will Skinner ever be consistent?
Will Bouchard learn to defend, or at least look like he’s trying?
No.
Why is Bouchard being mentioned tonight?
Ekholm was primarily responsible on goal 1 (along with Perry) – Bouchard sealed the wall properly expecting normal support which wasn’t there.
The second goal, Ekholm muffed the dump and then lost his man who scored.
Ekholm then lost the puck on the wall allowing Roberson a 5-alarm from the goal step.
Then Ek chased high and lost his stick 2 second before the 5 on 3 goal.
Ekholm’s worst game as an Oiler.
Bouchard has been the Oilers best defender tonight.
…why am I still watching this..?
Morbid curiosity meets rabid fandom.
Love this team and I’ll keep watching, but this is painful.
The great thing about sports is watching players elevate themselves for their team, and we have one (currently injured) player who has even played to expectations.
The goaltending is so deflating, even if it probably isn’t as poor as the rhetoric.
To follow up on this, I loved every Oilers team that got their teeth kicked in by Dallas every year, because they never stopped fighting. This team is so disengaged. Good but I don’t see any passion.
One goal against. That’s all I blame on Skinner. No chance on the other three. D responsible for two and the refs on that last one for a bs call.
No chance but we see other goalies make those saves all the time. That’s the gig in the NHL. Take goals away. An EBIG can make the saves you expect.
Skinner made some really good saves, too. Any one of those coulda went in. Fluke chip and breakaway. Fluke rainbow pass right on the tape of an open guy. Tip less than 10 feet out on a 5v3.
You all keep bashing Skinner. Save some of that for the defenders, who could’ve prevented atleast two of those.
I guess I don’t see our defense as being worse than what I watch the other team offer. Whereas I see other goalies move laterally and track pucks through traffic. The advanced stats say we aren’t a bad defensive team, but our goalies underperform relative to expectations. Maybe they are wrong but it matches what I see.
Keep making excuses and you will keep getting the same results. Skinner statistically has been one of the worst goalies in the league for an entire year on a top team! Also his rebound control has been atrocious causing more grade A’s from an initial grade B chance.
I kind of agree with both of you. That Robo goal under the pad was the absolutely egregious one. And if he saved any one of the other 3 against, I think I would have zero issue with Stu so far this game. 2-0 stars after two periods would be a good Stu performance on this one. The D have not helped Stu look good tonight.
Game over.
Time for some blood.
Agree but not our style unfortunately
This team does not know how to be aggressive and mean.
Where is Shoresy when you need him?
He’s doing a sleepover at Laura Mohr’s.
Who’s gonna set the tone??
Ek still hasn’t been skating between games.
I don’t think its just load management, he must still be injured in some respect.
This team has 8 d-men right now, ya, not many lefties but Ekholm should be scratched until he’s fully healthy.
He’s too old to play banged up and is hurting the team.
Ek manages to chase high and lose his stick helping that goal against.
Agreed, Ekholm has to be ready for the playoffs so rest him and start playing Emberson and Klingberg.
Ekholm may need another 6 game break.
I would keep Skins in even if they pump 10 by him. Team is notably fed up
I’m becoming curious more about Olivier Rodrigue by the shot.
Rodrigue is struggling (for a while) in the American Hockey League.
Colorado GM should win the GM award. Knew he had a good team; knew his goaltending was garbage and killing them; got a high end starter for peanuts while dumping his garbage and then signed him for 3 years on the cheap.
Louie DeBrusk is the Stuart Skinner of broadcasters.
Nice guy that would beat the living piss out of you?

The only Oiler in Stu’s territory of ineptitude tonight is Ekholm.
Ek the skater primarily responsible for each of the 1st two goal and almost gave Robertson one there.
Great save. Too late when you’re already down 3-0.
He didn’t save it … it was slipping through his 20 hole but the net was dislodged first. Right now there is a stark difference between the two goalies.
Awful goal. No idea why you wouldn’t pull skinner. It’s time to send a message. We can’t win anything important with this level of goaltending.

Now I’m throwing in the towel,
Going to need more in Sea town
