I always believed winning the Stanley Cup during the Connor McDavid era in Edmonton would be Everest. A friend of mine called on the night of the draft and told me he expected ‘four, maybe five’ championships and I just didn’t see it. Why? Let me tell you.
This generation of the franchise didn’t have the talent base the 1980’s enjoyed and did not have the creative edge in coaching or management the Gretzky-Messier era enjoyed. There were reasons the 1980’s Oilers won five.
First, the Oilers entered the NHL with Wayne Gretzky. That’s a helluva head start. Second, Barry Fraser was out of his mind brilliant in the 1979-81 drafts. He changed the hockey world’s power base with the help of crusty old men driving Oldsmobiles built low to the ground creaking across the Ontario, Finnish and prairie highways to find the next brilliant player.
Third, and this one is true even if you don’t believe me, most of the NHL owners and general managers were slow on the uptake in the 1980’s. Each fall, you could eliminate most of the teams from SC contention. In fact, the fall of 1983 THN preview had the Oilers winning the Smythe, Chicago taking the Norris, the Islanders at the top of the Patrick and the Bruins winning the Adams Division. Beyond those four teams, you could reasonably have argued that the Buffalo Sabres, Quebec Nordiques, Montreal Canadiens, Washington Capitals, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers had a chance to go deep. All but Chicago and Edmonton played out east. The two smartest general managers in the league were Bill Torrey (Islanders) and Glen Sather (Oilers). Some of the men running good NHL teams simply didn’t have the creativity, ability to sell their players, or desire to risk it all for a run to glory.
The Minnesota North Stars surprised Chicago in the Norris, but pretty much everything else went according to Hoyle. Edmonton had the most trouble with the Calgary Flames, who were mediocre during the regular season but an absolute load in the playoffs.
By the way, as the Oilers entered 1983-84, a few things we consider ‘settled law’ were not yet true. Quoting THN: “Andy Moog has proven to be one of the NHL’s better young goalies, and Grant Fuhr is waiting in the wings for a chance to redeem himself. He was a rookie sensation, suffered in his sophomore season (last year) and has yet to really establish himself again.” Also notable: rumours of a trade with the Flyers for Bill Barber as the season drew near. In fact, the big deal of the winter came in early December, as Slats acquired giant center Kevin McClelland. He would score perhaps the most important goal in team history in the spring.
I should say something about tonight’s game, but we’re at a point in the season where analysis and cheering are basically the same. We don’t have enough sample to make a case, so when single events go one way or another there’s a tendency to weave a story around 12 minutes instead of waiting for 200.
Here’s the ugly truth of all sport, especially hockey: the percentage of events that impact the outcome of a single game, that can be counted as luck, is significant. So, a pre-game analysis is about the same as lighting a candle.
I can write you a pre-game story, but the word “if” would figure prominently. There are moments in life when you have no control despite great interest and overwhelming anxiety. That’s why sports is so very good. We don’t know what is to come, only that it matters. Pretending we do know the outcome is like waving a lantern at a runaway train.
The Lowdown hits at noon today, Sports 1440. We’ll have Daniel Nugent-Bowman at The Athletic as our feature guest. Declan Krueger and Donovan Paulson will join me in what has become a two-hour Tuesday rockin’ radio show. It’s basically out of control but an absolute gas.
Gregor says Hyman is out for game 5, unlikely to return rest of series and we’ll see about later in The playoffs.
Very unfortunate but not surprising. I imagine he is done for the playoffs.
It’s difficult to see a path back into action for him.
Words unfit for an officer and a gentleman were in fine fashion when I seen the hit, this is a damned shame.
I wish that KK would call out Dallas’ filthy play. Put a spotlight on it. I believe that it needs to be said.
I don’t think there’s value to be found there.
That ship sailed after Bouchard slashed Hint’s foot.
Uhh, don’t look now but Skinner with the highest 5×5 save percentage in the NHL playoffs amongst tenders with over 200 minutes and who are still playing.
Leon was not happy with how the faceoffs were done

This team is an absolute wagon!
At the end of the game watching Cal P rush towards skinner with the hugest grin on his face and congratulate him with a huge hug seems to bring a little emotion to my middle aged heart.
This run (along with last yrs) has been so amazing to watch these men battle together and their bonds of brotherhood get stronger and stronger.
Idk if it’s because I’m older and just understand what being in the trenches fighting with people to achieve something means or if this is truly something special. But god damn it’s hard not to love this team right now
Felt the same way about Stecher’s comments about Ekholm returning. Playing for each other, celebrating each other. Hyman, Kapanen, doing what it takes, even if it’s not comfortable (as McD said). Just win. Bummed about Hyman but this team has that ‘next man up’ feel. Whatever it takes.
Rantanen racked up 17 points over a 5 game stretch (actually, in 4 games over a 5 game stretch). 4 pts in the other 12 games, 2 pts in his last 6 (1 on the PP). If that was McDavid the media would be all over him with crazy narratives
Simply put, Rantanen is an exceptional player but not on the same level as McDavid.
He had 2 incredible consecutive periods, most notably a 3rd period game 7 for the ages, given the significance of the opponent. In 8/17 games held without a point, which is also noteworthy as Dallas has gone 2-6 in those games
Going into tonight, Skinner’s record in game 4s: 6 GP, 5-0, .953, 2 SO. So he’s now 6-0 and improved on that save percentage
Considering game 4 is a generally a 3-1/2-2 swing game, that’s pretty incredible
Maybe it’s just my Oiler coloured glasses, but even in the first period it never felt like Dallas was firing too many grade-A chances at the net. Rather, they were going full Hurricane and relying on shot volume (of nearly any quality) to generate offense.
The second period was a solid response from the Oilers while the third was total domination.
Now let’s break the hearts of Stars fans in Dallas.
We had some luck, and some pucks hit Skinner when he was battling through traffic. But he was battling, and the team is selling out to block shots and force them wide. Some of that luck is hard earned.
One thing that hasn’t been talked about much is Skinners play with the puck. He makes the odd blunder but he has ice in his veins and allows the d men a little less skating and most times he hesitates just long enough to make a solid play and get the puck moving back out of zone. Dump ins are not as effective as a result so Dallas has to try to carry it in, which Oil are defending really well at the moment.
I am so happy for Stu to silence his critics!
I just wish he would move it quicker.
Bruce Cassidy said just this in the Series against Vegas. Said how good he was at handling the puck and how it disrupted their forecheck
Happy for him. When he returned, I commented that one of the reasons it’s so frustrating when he struggles is he’s a local boy and we all want it for him. I postulated that it would be quite a redemption story if he road a .930 to the Stanley Cup… Since then – .833 (might have been this game thread or the next), 1.0, 1.0, .815, .971, .966 = .931 or .951 depending which game thread
Watching that Hyman injury in slow motion, looks like it might be wrist or finger(s). The front of his extended hand was the point of contact.
My thought was collar bone or shoulder. If it’s collar bone he is done for the playoffs. Hope I am wrong. Unlikely J Skinner is the replacement as goal scoring seems sufficient with the current lineup. Hope Browner is ready to go back in if Hyman is out.
Someone on the US broadcast indicated they had heard that Hyman’s thumb may have got jammed on the play. He released his stick immediately.
Dallas looked completely gassed by the end of that one. Their faces afterwards were defeat, not determination. What more do they have to give?
“Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.”
Don’t start planning the parade yet, just put ’em away Thursday and cheer for game 7 and lots of OT out east.
Do you think they’ll have anything left for game five?? I think so.
Hyman & Brown won’t play game five.
Maybe Jeff Skinner gets in for his second playoff game or maybe not.
Who knows?
Last game at the end Jamie Benn on the bench had that distant forlorn stare. I thought to myself then it was done.
Do we have intel on Brown?
If they’re both out, that’s a lot of grit, right-handedness and speed lost.
Probably a concussion.
OK, I guess we’ll know if he skates in the next few days,
Does Derek Ryan make a appearance over skinner since he’s a right shot center if both are out?
If you had told me in June 2024 that next year we’d have to put Jeff Skinner into our lineup with a 3-1 series lead in the WCF, I’d have told you to stop smoking the ganja…
I just noticed the nice subtle pick by Perry on the 1st goal age is only a number for some players.
Stat on SN postgame:
Oilers are 17-1 in series when leading 3-1.
Jets?
1989 vs Gretzky
Watching Gretzky go “god mode” against the Oilers felt like coming back to your house and noticing it burned down because you forgot to turn off the stove. I knew he was that good, but watching him do it against the Oilers just brought that realization on a bit too keenly.
Not stoked about Hyman! Hopefully he’s not out long. If for no other reason than he deserves to see action in the final.
Glad we have the depth that we do, though. Mason Marchment looks like Waluigi.
Lol, too accurate with waluigi, XD
Re. Hyman – rest him for series and hope they can numb it up and he can go in the final. Hopefully, shoulder (my suspicion) is not too bad.
Nuge’s facial hair looking like a Guy Fawkes mask never fails to make me laugh.
Remember remember the 5th of November!!!
Would it surprise anyone if they go with Savoie-Phillip over Skinner?
Yes
Need speed on the forecheck with Brown out and Hyman questionable.
Way off board… Hamblin?
No.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they bring in Ekholm and go 11-7.
Can Stecher play forward?
iirc he did play a couple of shifts at forward when they did this back in March.
But my guess would be you double shift 97/29/93. Not ideal.
Max Jones.
I think you might be right.
In 2025:
Jeff Skinner was 4th among forwards in points at 5 on 5
Jeff Skinner was 1st on the team in goal share at 5 on 5
This does not need to be over-thought.
LOL. Max is more intimidating on a grinding fourth line.
and a much worse hockey player.
Jones-Janmark-Kapanen fourth line. Has my vote.
Not sure inserting an AHL player over Jeff Skinner is something that’s going to happen.
Yes.
Nuge-McDavid-Perry
Podz-Leo-Arvidsson
Kane-Rico-Frederic
Jones-Janmark-Kapanen
Kulak-Bouchard
Nurse-Walman
Ekholm-Klingberg
Pound them into submission.
Can’t imagine Max Jones playing over Skinner.
Game 3, 3rd period: Dallas 4 SOG
Game 4, 3rd period: Dallas 4 SOG
The Oilers played rope a dope and kept everything, mostly, to the outside and cleared the net front. Dally brought all they had but couldn’t get much of a look. Bent but didn’t break, as planned, maybe. Started the third and simply overwhelmed them. You can only play like this if you’re confident in your team and especially that your goalie will stop the shots he sees.
What a fantastic effort. Kept the heads and didn’t cheat or get suckered into dumb penalties.
Mature, measured and determined.
My favourite Oilers style of Game.
9 PRIMARY points for Nuge in the four games of WCF……
He has been unreal. Definitely in the conversation for MVP of this playoff run.
He’s great but the fact that he’d be 3rd or 4th on my list is saying something
For Bruce and Ben
#PlayLaBambaBaby!!
We have 3 second pairing defense pairs
Playing at the top of the pile.
Just brilliant!
Any pairing with Bouchard is a top paring given he’s objectively the best d-man in the league in the playoffs.
That third period was air tight for Edmonton.
That was one hell of a scrappy win they dug deep for that one Dallas came with everything they had. Know to finish them in 5 kickback and watch the Panthers go 7
Dallas played their best game of the series.
Dominant third! NEVER IN DOUBT!
WOOOOOOOT!
Great win.
Marchment can eat a box of nails.
Dallas fans giving him shit on Facebook for being useless
Would love to see Marchment get his ass kicked. You can add Benn and Bischel to that list.
If you can find Benn.
Last seen on a milk carton.
Very happy about the win. A long term Hyman injury would be brutal.
Despite what the Oilers may say (upper body injury) I’ve seen about 150 shoulder separations and that looked text book separation just by body movement.
Good thing is, if it’s a clean pop back he could be ready by next series.
Damn, I guess I’ve never had a quick/clean reset but I can’t imagine playing again that soon
Some of us oldsters on here will remember the season that Mike Greer separated his shoulder and would often have it popped back in during game play
Looked that way as he walked down the tunnel.
I’ve suffered multiple dislocations of my shoulder and with a counterweight I’ve learned to put them
back in. Labral tear repair operations require months recovery, but until you opt for surgery, yes you can technically play the next day (no good guidelines, some experts recommend 2 weeks off but no evidence to support that). The instability will remain until the surgery is undertaken, but once the labrum tears it can’t re-tear.
Having said all that, for the brief clip I saw, he wasn’t holding it that way. Possibly wrist? AC joint is another possibility although that’s usually when
hit into boards
Ya, It’s been so long I can’t remember which is worse for a Labrum tear if it’s a posterior dislocation or an anterior separation with a tear, the worse being a complete socket “Pop” out, which leads to tears.
I’m pretty sure we’re hoping for an anterior separation which is forward dislocation.
A comment earlier was a great example, Mike Grier shoulder would “Pop” out regularly and required no surgery IIRC.
hopefully it’s just an easy reset.
You’re probably right, but I’m hoping it was just a stinger.
Super solid period. The Oilers got better as the game went on. Fantastic win.
Now rest up, and heal up!
#neverindoubt
Win it for Bruce!
Yes Sir.
How many shots did Dallas have all third? Two? Maybe three? Insane domination by the Oilers. These guys are going to win the cup.
edit: it was 4.
What a clinical 3rd period!
Got better as the game went on!!! Without Hyman & Brown
I couldn’t be happier for Skinner! In Skinner we trust
Game Four Skinner for the Win!!!
#NeverInDoubt
Uncle Rico eating Dallas’ steak.
Think it’s fair to say the EN goal streak of futility is over.
Saw Jamie Benn there. We will be glad to see him on the Island after one more game
BOOM!!! Rico Twists the Dagger!!!
I was thinking it was boots for Henrique but I’m starting to wonder if it’s his head.
And as I’m typing this he scores from 260ft away 😂
What another game by Stu and the defensive effort in front of him! This team!
There have been other “more fun” periods but that might have been my favorite period of the playoff season.
I mean, the Stars were playing very well through two period, they had their legs and were carrying more play than the Oilers.
The Oilers simply locked it the eff down in the third period – from the opening puck drop they were clinical and surgical, carried play and gave up absolutely nothing – Stars could barely get possession in the offensive zone.
A locked down third period when the game had been quite high event before!
Mine too. They were so dialed in, everyone contributing, playing the right way. That’s veteran experience
Stars came at them so hard in the first 2 periods they ran out of gas.
That was a KK adjustment after the first and second. He tightened up the 5-man unit and brought pressure quickly in the neutral zone. The extra fwd would close off the breakout immediately and force a 50/50 battle near their blue. KK is a brilliant tactician.
Jinner is coming in for the game 5 winner.
Depth for days.
I hold out this faint hope that Skinner does something magical in these playoffs
I said to start the year he would score a deciding overtime goal aka Klima
Book it!
Huge third period. Well done.
Pretty big non call when the Dallas player went down too easily.
Rantenan with a huge dive …..
I know he went down easy but I was floored it wasn’t called.
Was more floored that they called the Granlund penalty with 5 mins left. It almost seemed like a reflex that the ref was trying to shake
Man that’s huge. What hustle from Kap
BOOM!!! Kappy with the Dagger!!!
I think that was a set EN play…….
Good eye. That’s what Ray Ferraro said as well.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There we go!
Just waiting for a soft slashing call on Edmonton now…
Perry missed the tap in
