Last night in Winnipeg, the Stan Bowman Oilers had a night. Edmonton’s tenth GM acquired Ike Howard, Atro Leppänen and Quinn Hutson over the summer and all three had a game. The most impressive player on the ice overall was Noah Philp, who made passes like Adam Oates used to back in the olden days. I have to say, my expectations of “Oilers at Jets” has been very low for several years, but last night was encouraging. Here’s a look.
Howard-Nuge-Kapanen played more than any other line at five-on-five, they were 6-7 shots, 0-1 goals and 32 percent expected goals. Nuge had a HDSC in the metric and of course sent that sweet pass to Ike Howard for his first goal as an Oilers player. I’m pleased the coach has Nuge with Howard, but wonder if Kapanen is the right third man. He’s aggressive on the forecheck and creates chances, but there’s also chaos and time spent inefficiently. Not sure where Kapanen fits, don’t think it’s wise that he’s on a line with a rookie.
Henrique-Savoie was a thing with a couple of left-wingers (Viljami Marjala and Rem Pitlick) rotating through. Henrique-Savoie went 2-5 shots in 10:10 and didn’t get much done. Savoie played just 12:07 at five-on-five, maybe they’re saving him for tonight? Don’t know. Even with limited time, Savoie showed he’s quality. I don’t think Henrique is a dynamic center offensively, but if this is the third line the trio should get plenty of opportunities against the soft parade.
Noah Philp had two assists, was money in the faceoff circle and made plays you’d see from a veteran. His two passes were sublime examples of creative hockey and impressive execution. I don’t think he clears waivers. As we get older, we notice patterns, and Philp’s game last night reminded me of Kyle Brodziak’s impact evening in September of 2007. I wrote about it years ago, and here is the passage that could apply to Philp:
On the night of Sept. 17, 2007, prospect Kyle Brodziak announced he was NHL-ready and blew away the competition. He scored twice, added an assist, played over 16 minutes, and over two minutes on both the power play and penalty kill. A team that badly needed responsible two-way forwards with some offence, Brodziak made the team and never spent another minute in the minors. He retired after 917 games in the NHL, his final season coming with the Oilers in 2018-19.
Atro Leppänen looks good to me. I’m not going to get all wrapped up in this because there’s no damn room, but I think Bowman might have found something here. Leppänen spiked late, and we had to assume he had all kinds of problems defensively, but he appears to be a good thinker as well as a fine passer and offensive asset. I am starting to wonder if Bowman might have to make room for this player at some point this season. Just a mild case of curiosity, no excitement at all. Very calm.
Quinn Hutson continues to do things that make him stand out in a good way. I have no idea if he’ll ever see the NHL, but he does so many things well. His puck handling and passing are strong, and he went to the net and made a dynamite tip for his goal last night. I’m putting him in the same drawer as Leppänen, although I don’t think Bowman will have to make room for Hutson this season. Maybe next fall, though. He’s going to have a pro career somewhere in the hockey world.
On the Lowdown today, our feature guest will be Kevin McCurdy. I’ll ask him about the coaching decision to put Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top line, and we’ll discuss last night’s game before looking forward to this evening’s home tilt against the Kraken. Noon to 2pm on Sports 1440 and You Tube.

Stu playing full 60 tonight.
Coach is looking for Mangiapane to play with Nuge for a bit here – planned on him playing with Nuge in Winnipeng last night but he was sick.
Coach again talking about not giving the young players big roles – they won’t start up the lineup but may earn it.
Asked about Savoie and points and coach said he doesn’t care about points but wants to see him win puck battles and make plays under pressure.

Team Canada and Team USA will play two Rivalry Series games in Edmonton as part of the lead-up to the 2026 Olympics.
Both games will be held at Rogers Place (home of the Oilers) on December 10 and 13.
Are the teams chosen by then?
I would assume so.
After announcing the first 6 players, they said the remainder would be announced “later this year”.

Nope, not saving him (Hutson and Leppanen going back to back).
More verbal yesterday from the coach re: Savoie could play 4th line – better to work his way up the lineup than get tried up the lineup and not be ready.
Savoie has the ability to play up and down the lineup but, at least for me, that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be given opportunity up the lineup to start.
He is primarily an offensive player but, at the same time, he’s a complimentary offensive player not a driver of offence. Savoie is best suited to play his top game with other smart and skilled offensive players.
Who am I to question to coach but I don’t his early season management of Savoie – he’s made his decision on where he start and not even providing a semblance of real opportunity.
Maybe they feel Savoie needs more time in the minors marinating his game offensively. I myself don’t believe this but some sceptics say would it really hurt Savoie getting 1st line PP-PK in Bakersfield. Maybe even at the Centre position as Bowman may need a plan B if Connor is taking his talents elsewhere.
What is pre-season if not to see what young players can do when given an opportunity.
But alas, it seems the Oilers are determined to beat any offence out of players until they have a team of checkers.
Bowie struggles with this love thing “Walks beside me/walks on by”.
So happy you are good with it, LT. Best vibes from your Arizona fan base.

That snipe by Howard was a thing of beauty. When’s the last time a Oiler forward had a one-timer like that? I think Lavoie had a couple of snipes like that but that was in the AHL if I remember correctly.
Other than Drai
Yes besides Leon I would probably say Eberle yet I think Howard is going to get better and better every practice he has Leon-Connor feeding him the biscuit. I myself would squeeze every goal possible out of Howard who’s on Value Village wages for the next 3 years and then possibly flip him as his wages and value will skyrocket with every goal he scores. If Howard can score on NHL Goalies then put him in a position to do this immediately.
I don’t know if Eberle ever scored a true one-timer in his life. The guy could snipe top shelf for sure, but he was the king of dusting the puck off.
EDM lineup vs. SEA:
Draisaitl – McDavid – Frederic
Janmark – Lazar – Hutson
Mangiapane – Tomasek – Jarventie
Hamblin – Samanski – Clattenburg
Ekholm – Bouchard
Lappanen – Regula
Millman – Akey
Skinner
Jonsson
Maybe testing Hutson’s “pro-readiness” a bit here given he played is the one guy that played in Winnipeg last night that will play 2/5 of the way across the country tonight (plus both rookie games and the split squad game).
Wait Leppanen too – two guys new to North American pro hockey that are unlikely to make the team but could impact the lineup during the season.
Looking forward to seeing all three on that third line and the 2nd pairing
It will be interesting to see how the new guys work out. I’m heading to Alberta tomorrow, which radio carries the games these days? For once I’ll likely be in range to pick it up in the car
Oops I see the game is tonight. So maybe I can get bits of Friday/Sunday games.
880 has the Oilers games with Stauffer and Moon.
If McDavid isn’t signing, force a trade.
Neither of the two rookies should be saddled with Henrique in any way.
Draisaitl is a center and may be the teams only true top line center this time next year, saddle McDavid with Henrique if he won’t accept a trade.
Mangiapane/McDavid/Frederick
Podkolzin/Draisaitl/Savoie
Howard/Nuge/Tomasek
Lazar/Philp/Kapanen
Draisaitl is not a winger, get your head out of your arse coach.
McDavid’s contract has a No Movement Clause. How would you suggest a trade be forced? How would this approach impact trade value? How would this outcome reflect on the franchise, particularly with respect to attracting free agents?
There’s all kinds of ways of doing this from friendly to nasty. Oilers will always spend to the Cap, money will always attract and having a good team with the likes of Leon and Bouchard won’t hurt either. McDavid is one hell of a player but let’s not put him ahead of the Oiler Jersey . Toronto actually thought Marner would resign as for Bowman I think him and his father have been around long enough to not fall for that one unless McDavid has a change of heart and signs by game 1.
Please list the ways of forcing a McDavid trade, from friendly to nasty. Please bear in mind the team has granted the player a No Movement Clause, so he holds all the negotiating leverage. Please tell me how you might approach this.
It’s as simple as McDavid giving Bowman a trade list of where he would prefer to go all the way to the other end of the spectrum. If word leaks out that McDavid is moving on yet won’t wave his no trade use your imagination. How is Tkachuk viewed in Calgary compared to Marner in Toronto? Both players wanted to leave 1 team was compensated the other was bent over and given the shaft.
Nuge said he prefers C, and likes wingers that shoot. That third line looks right. The only concern might be that neither Tomasek or Nuge at this point are that fast
ha!
Just a mild case of curiosity, no excitement at all. Very calm.
Same. Lepanen, Hutson 🤪
Nice to see Philp finally looking like a true NHLer. We still haven’t seen Lazar yet but keeping him as the 13th forward, seeing as he can play all three forward positions, could prove valuable. We may also see Henrique & Tomasek battling for the 3c position initially to start the season. I’m beginning to see a trio of Oiler veteran forwards as low hanging fruit (Henrique, Janmark & Kapanen) all three could be cap casualties.
Noah Philp has put Curtis Lazar on notice – as it should be.
Quinn Hutson is putting Roby Jarventie and James Hamblin and Max Jones on notice for first forward call-up.
Hutson seems to have the brain needed to overcome skill limitations. If he can be a depth player for the Oil (or be a guy they can flip for need this spring) then he is found money. I have to admit I am very pleased with his acquisition.
So glad that Philp is having the kind of camp that can keep him on the team. I am cheering hard for his success.
I think Hutson is probably a tweener. Curlock says his skating isn’t special, and that makes an NHL career very hard to see for a smaller lighter guy. He has the smarts and enough skill, but hundreds of guys do. Hamblin is in the same boat even if a better skater
If Jarventie can stay healthy he’ll be passing guys up the list, a lot of that coming from your scouting reports on him
Howard asked if he feels comfortable from the spot he scored his PPG and his responds “ya, I love bombing pucks from there!”
Tough not to like this kid. He exudes energy – seems to love playing hockey and being at the rink.
It would be great to add a guy that bombs them from the left side
Draisaitl-McDavid-Frederic
Howard-Nuge-Mangiapane
Podkolzin-Tomasek-Savoie
Henrique-Philp-Lazar
If Knoblauch is stuck on that first line, this looks like a reasonably balanced roster on paper to start the season with.
