Game 2 2023-24: Canucks at Oilers

I don’t know what to tell you man. We flushed everything, replaced the plugs and points, checked the hoses, filter, did the timing twice to top dead centre (Kenny Holland did it by ear, swear to God) and this thing should be tearing up the blacktop. Leave it here, give me the weekend. If I don’t find the problem and fix it by Sunday morning, you can have your money back no hard feelings. Deal?

The Edmonton Oilers have a five-on-five goal share of 0-5. I don’t think we’ll see 0-10 tomorrow morning, but if the club struggles tonight, I don’t think we can just let it lie. Perhaps we’re seeing a different Vancouver Canucks team, maybe the Oilers got old in a hurry on the wings, maybe the answer to ‘is our children learning’ a resounding “hell no!” across the board. I don’t believe the Oilers are a bad team. Time to show the boss (fans) you’re a great one.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA

Saturday as children had a different feel in the 1970’s. We had chores, I was responsible for bringing in buckets of coal (a truly filthy experience), making sure kerosene was in the coal oil lamps, and the goats were fed. We eventually got power to the old McLaren school but the first year there was tough. My Dad broke the ground on much of those two acres and planted vegetables (radishes to the sky!) and built Mom two lines to dry the clothes outside.

We were poor. The great thing about being 10 and poor is you don’t know it. At all. I had my brother, my dog, my parents and Dad discovered Wagon Wheels at the Co-op maybe 1972 summer and they were fantastic. We had second hand clothes and I’m sure people must have noticed, but honestly it wasn’t until much later that I realized we didn’t have much in those years.

My Dad earned $1.12 an hour from a man named Frank Franks (would I lie to you?) and Mr. Franks gave him all the work he could all year long. Eventually, Mom had to work at the Pine Island Lodge. She worked overnights. All the men in the house hated it. Mom would drive in to town after 8pm, and the three men (me, my brother and Dad) would try not to get on each other’s nerves. Didn’t work.

I had music, hockey, baseball, wrestling and a vivid imagination. I got so good at making things up in my mind that I could (not lying) run through an entire baseball game in my mind. Steve Renko might start for the Expos against Jack Billingham of Cincinnati. That meant I (as manager, replacing Gene Mauch) would run the lefty bats (notably Boots Day, a wonderful name) until Fred Norman came in from the bullpen (he was a lefty). The LH bats (like Mike Jorgensen at first base) would give way to Hal Breeden, with Clyde Mashore replacing Day.

I found refuge in sports, not because I was poor, but because I loved the games. I could do the same thing with music. If you play “Highway Star” my mind soars, the tumblers click, and I’m riding my bike down a dirt road with my friend Brian. We’re going too fast and are going to wipe out, only a matter of time.

Dad eventually got a job at Husky. You’ll never hear me say an unkind word about oil, because Husky got my Mom back from the Pine Island Lodge. Later, we moved to Maidstone, Dad worked for CN and I got some odd jobs, earned some pay, and spent it on The Hockey News and the Allman Brothers.

You might read these words and feel sorry for that 10-year old kid. I encourage you to take another lesson from this story. I was a rich kid in many ways. My parents loved me, supported me, taught me right from wrong. My Dad would tell me I would have to work hard to “provide for your family” so often I still use that phrase in my own mind. There are few things in life more important than getting up in the morning, going to your job and giving an honest effort. Some days are diamonds, some days are stones.

Tonight, the Edmonton Oilers tell us who they are. I’m betting diamonds.

Skinner hasn’t looked right all fall Campbell needs to buck up and the team needs to lock it down next game in Philly before this snowballs any further. The answer is also not playing Connor and Leon 25,minutes a game no wonder these 2 look bagged by the last 5 minutes.

Reja

Nashville is the next stop anyhow we need some competent Goaltending.

Diablo

Time to put Hyman back with McDavid. For the life of me, I can’t understand why Woodcroft is trying to force Brown on to the first line. Brown has never been a first line winger.

SK Oiler Fan

Because they’re budies and 97 said make it so

Woodguy v2.0

97 and 29 are two of the best offensive C’s in the league.

Not a lot of difference between 1st and 2nd line wingers on this team.

McSorley33

Woodcroft will be gone by Christmas. MARK MY WORDS

McSorley33

We outshot the Vancouver Canucks….moral victory?

McDavid 0 GF / 4 GA
Brown 0 GF / 3 GA
Kane 0 GF / 5 GA

Competition will be much tougher against other Pacific foes.

McSorley33

Just need better goaltending!

cowboy bill

4 goals on 16 shots again for Stewart Skinner.

Diablo

Well the goaltending can’t be any worse.

The Oilers managed to make the playoffs with a shaky Koskinen and old man Smith.

But yeah that 4th goal should have been stopped. No idea why Skinner backed into the net like that … stand your ground and let Ekholm drive him short side. Skinner panicked instead of squaring up to the shooter.

McSorley33

PR department working OT now and they have to…

This team scored ONE. Goal at evens…..

ONE

After being humiliated.

PP or bust?

Just like the playoffs….

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

No diamonds tonight, only stones. Except for maybe the Neil variety.

Stones would play inside her head,
And where she slept, they made her bed.
And she would ache for love and get
But stones.

I don’t know about love but I am starting to ache for wins.

godot10

The defense and team defense has been bad for the first two games. The rust on Kulak and Ekholm is showing. Bouchard plays subpar defense unless his offensive game is humming. Nurse and Ceci both caught with their pants down on one play. And the coaching doesn’t have the PK ready.

2nd year in a row that the Oilers come out of training camp with the defense and team defensive play not ready for the season.

Woodcroft has to use more players.

If one is getting a lot of powerplays, one has to begin using the 2nd unit some.

I think Lavoie can handle the six minutes Erne, Janmark, and Ryan each got.

rich tm

Not a word out of place.

LMHF#1

Woodcroft doesn’t adjust.

The influence of his mentor is showing.

flea

I agree completely, it feels like there is the McDavid oilers then there are the rest of them. Tonight, the Canucks got the winning goal from one of their bottom 6 players. The Oilers need their whole team humming.

Still – there were long sections of dominant play from the Oilers – they just are still a little out of synch. Weird considering the long training camp, captains skates, talking about being ready, everything.

Goaltending also looks bad right now but I don’t think you can fault Skinner really on any goal. The Hoglander tip is straight down, the 2-0. Maybe he should have that Lafferty shot but it’s also a great goal by that player. Deharnais wasn’t in the lineup tonight, Lafferty scored the winning goal. Maybe the oilers want a do-over on that negotiation. Erne isn’t much of a consolation prize.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

I want to see the 3rd line FWDs each taking 2.5 shots a game.

If they can do that consistently for ten games they’ll get more PP time.

dustrock

Skinner was so far back in his net he was eating popcorn in the first row

Bling

With you on Lavoie.

Woodcroft had an entire training camp to pick his 11 forwards, and in game 2 he’s running 5 forwards into the ground.

Not a good look.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

Lavoie isn’t auditioning for Erne’s spot.

He’s going to take Foegele’s.

He needs to play hockey and he needs to score goals. He has more time to do both in the AHL right now.

There’s a 2nd power play unit?

Munny 2.0

The two saves by De Smith that took it beyond what Skinner was doing were the Drai shot from the slot on the powerplay early in the second and the other was the toe save on Holloway’s shot.

Harpers Hair

Colorado needed OT to beat the Sharks 2-1.

Nathan MacKinnon had 14 SOG

Jaxon

People have flushed Blackwood down the drain like his career is done, but we forget that he is still only 26, an age at which most goalies are just getting their first taste of the NHL. The Sharks may have a great goalie on their hands for the cost of a 6th round pick. 51 saves on 52 shots!

Benign Bone

I only really take issue with the goaltending in that game. A few plays on the GA where I would’ve liked to see players responsible make a different choice, but nothing too egregious. Had both games had been like that, I wouldn’t have minded.

On to the next game!

teddyturnbuckle

For how shit the goaltending has been since Smith retired you think management would be open to playing a 3rd goalie once in a while. Every other team in the League beats us with their 3rd string goalie.

LMHF#1

Smith stunk the joint out too and knocked them out of the playoffs…where is this stuff coming from?

SK Oiler Fan

Yep, Has to be considered imo

Munny 2.0

Cap space.

Munny 2.0

Four straight powerplays with the game on the line and came away with nothing. Lots of pressure from the top 6, but the wingers aren’t potting and the bottom 6 needs to break through at some point. Average performance I’d say by Skinner (ie w/in one sigma), considering the ones that went by him, but he got out-goalied.

The D was better but still pathetic… two goals, no sticks tied up, another goal was a dumbass shot, but Nurse isn’t going to the wall on the shot like he should be, and fourth goal Ekholm gets burned by someone with better speed and more in game-shape. But when the guy at the other end is playing his ass off, our guy needs to stop one of those.

Better than game 1 obviously, but they’re going to need to take another step up. Everyone not 29, 97, 93.

GB&Q

55 was good, too. 91, 28, 13, 10 not nearly good enough (and i know the latter two barely saw the ice except for on the PK).

McSorley33

True. But, in very limited time 13 has managed to go
0 GF / 2 GA

Fuhr and Lowething in Vegreville

Hard to win a game when you score 3 goals on 40 shots but the opposition gets 4 on 15.

We didn’t even play that well, but iMHO, still dominated that game, and that was without our big guns going crazy.

If we had a goalie that could even give us like .875٪…. but nope. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Bling

https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/edm-vs-van/2023/10/14/2023020029/boxscore

Woodcroft doesn’t trust the third line, only 10 min TOI for Holloway and Foegele. McLeod with 12.

Ryan and Janmark with 6 or 7 min.

McDrai 25 plus. Hyman and Nuge around 23.

Maybe that’s from chasing the game, but it’s game 2 against a middle of the pack team. That does not bode well.

SK Oiler Fan

As good as the 3rd line was they weren’t a big threat to score so I get it.

cowboy bill

Canucks don’t look like a middle of the pack team.

SK Oiler Fan

If they get Goaltending like that they are definately a playoff team

GB&Q

it’s a copycat league, appears the Nucks have adopted the big D/defend the front of the net approach that worked so well for VGK.

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

That last 2 minutes 6×5 Oilers looked like the Keystone Cops. Well deserved loss … again.

Darryl8843

So in 2017 we beat the Sharks and took the Ducks to game 7. The next year we were the consensus pick to go to the cup final and missed the playoffs. If we don’t get some kind of goaltending history may repeat itself

red14

Whatever…. just make the playoffs, get your goalies figured out before then, and don’t kill your two best players in the process.
Simple

Yukon Jerk

867 sv% Terrible.
The D core just continues to hang the goalies out to dry.
Both are to blame.
Just garbage

Fuhr and Lowething in Vegreville

The “D core” allowed 19 shots against against in an NHL hockey game, 4 of 19 shots went in. That’s brutal.

That’s not a D core issue, that’s a goaltending issue.

McSorley33

They scored *1* goal at 5 on 5

One

oilinthepeg

The Oilers allowed half as many goals in that one. Maybe next game half as many again??

Need to find a way as a team to win a game like that. Just poor execution by most of the team. Not sure what can be done about the goaltending. Yikes. Hopefully one of the two goalies will string something together because this is just an embarrassing start. Guess we will see how much mental toughness they have.

KnightRain

Skinner looks shaky. No confidence, at all. If Campbell can’t get it together we’re sunk.

cowboy bill

Never mind playing like the Golden Knights, all they need to do is play like the Canucks.

Bling

Much better effort.

The D is real rusty and the goaltending is woof.

I don’t like line 1 and I wonder if they change that up.

jtblack

MCD – 26 mins
DRAI – 25 mins

game 2 of 82. OK Jay

jp

Well there’s now way they could make up for the 8-1 loss in one night, but they also couldn’t get the W on ‘just win baby’ night for game 2.

Rough rough start to the year. Definitely not encouraging, as well as Tocchet may have the Canucks playing.

SK Oiler Fan

Full marks to Tochett although goaltending makes most coaches look good

Yukon Jerk

Yep,
Meanwhile Skinner & Campbell are making coach Woodcroft look….

wood99

I think you can 100% lay this on Skinner. Piss poor effort by him. Not one key save made. Outplayed by the other teams backup. Team losing confidence in their goaltending two games in is scary.Question is how long do you wait before you start to panic and make a trade?

SK Oiler Fan

This G issue isn’t new. Making a move now would not be a panic move.

Hockey Project

The start of this season is the most depressing thing I’ve seen since that time I watched “Johnny Got His Gun”.

Darryl8843

So 12 goals against in the first two games against a non playoff team. Last year we missed home ice by one point. This week we pissed away four points.

innercitysmytty

Haha Singh says the Tocchet game plan was successful tonight! Yeah he drew it up just like that lol

813.52Ran

Five losses in a row will cost Woodcroft his job, imho.
40% of the way there.

SK Oiler Fan

Nah, have to get him some Goaltending

LMHF#1

Two losses to the effing Canucks to open the season.

They should be damn embarrassed.

And when people try to claim they “dominated” after….they didn’t score and didn’t even create gimme chances.

So damn bad.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

First game was bad.

Tonight they woke up.

Stu and Soup need to play NHL goaler and we’re rollin

LMHF#1

3 goals tonight.

Against the Canucks.

And their backup.

That’s not any good.

Benign Bone

At 5-on-5, they created 17 high danger chances, 30 scoring chances, and the eye test even had them dominating that game. Skinner gave up at least 1 softy and VAN did good job covering the netfront at the end, but I’m not disappointed with that game. Had both games been like that, I’d still be fine with the start to the season.

LMHF#1

Horse shoes and hand grenades.

OriginalPouzar

Oilers absolutely dominated about 50 minutes of that game. Defence can’t pass but they still dominated most of the game.

Game was lost on goaltending and goaltending only.

Derek

I dunno man, that 2 on 0, and having two Canucks players tip the puck 5 feet from the goalie with no defender marking them may have had something to do with the first 3 against.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

They allowed six shots against after that 2-0…

Small sample sizes yadda yada.

SK Oiler Fan

Dominated is a tsd steong, but swap goalies and it’s 6 2 Oil

cowboy bill

Casey deSmith was impressive . So was the Canuck defense.

GB&Q

One goal 5-on-5 in two games ain’t gonna get it done. Where was Brown? Kane? Too many yips in their own end. Holloway/Clouder were good

OriginalPouzar

Brown has likely been mis-cast as a sure-fire top 6 guy but I think giving him a month to get up to speed makes sense.

rich tm

Goaltending did play a role, but defense has to tie men up in front.

On the PP marker, defense was just guarding space and a nice re-direct that Skinner has no chance on is the result. No excuse for the defense on the 2nd goal, you have to tie the man up in front and giving up a 2-0 on the 3rd was just brutal. Last goal, you can argue that Skinner may have lost his bearings and went a little too far over.

Yes goaltending can be better, but the defense is as much if not more to blame right now.

godot10

The defense was pretty bad.

1) poor PK (both D soft positioning, so it might be coaching).
2) Kulak not tying up a forward in front of the next. One bad mistake each of the first two games. Rust showing.
3) Nurse and Ceci with heads-up-a$$
4) Ekholm slow and rusty.

Derek

I mean it’s kind’ve bad luck because Desmith has become a brick wall, Skinner has turned into a pumpkin and so on and so forth… But you just made a big deal in the media about how you’re going to come back hard the next game, so watch out.

Then you drop another game, at home to a team that didn’t make the playoffs last year. Shame, shame.

Oil2Oilers

Torn asunder

Surgeons Knot

The oilers have maybe 2-3 more games for the goalies to rebound. If not, they need to take drastic measures to fix this situation. League average goaltending should not be hard to find yet somehow here we are…

SK Oiler Fan

Pickard or Rodrique?

Optimism is like heroin

Ullmark?

godot10

The defense and team defense has been abominable the first two games.

thelongdark

How is Dustin Schwartz still employed?

Yukon Jerk

I mean even if he is just the scapegoat ffs

wood99

Skinner looks clumsy to me.

SK Oiler Fan

G, D, PK – thats alot of holes for a SC favorite

wood99

I think the Oilers have played quite well tonight. I think are goaltending has been a problem. We have been dominating since the second period began. Poor goaltending has us in the pickle we are in!

Paulie

According to NST exp goals are 4.88 for Oil and 2.04 for V, all situations

Munny 2.0

Doesn’t look good now the Nucks are in the 1-2-2

Darryl8843

I’m not sure I’m an old school hockey guy anymore but Tochet has the Canucks playing like jobs are on the line. Oilers not so much

innercitysmytty

Expected goals for at even strength are almost 75% for the oilers. Not sure Vancouver is playing well at all. Their backup is playing out of his mind and our goalie is playing poorly. I’d be surprised if Tocchet is happy with this effort at all.

Darryl8843

Coaches are never happy but he is happy he’s 2-0 I guarantee you

cowboy bill

Well they won. Didn’t they?

LMHF#1

If they think they can play this way all year they’ll miss the playoffs.

Need a steep correction and fast.

OriginalPouzar

They dominated all but about 10 minutes of that game. They lost that game on goaltending – end stop!

McSorley33

7 Power plays help

cowboy bill

How is it that the Canucks have 4 goals on only 15 shots. And Edmonton have 3 goals on 36 shots .

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

The score is annoying but they woke up after the 3rd against.

Nucks have four shots since.

Win more games than you’ll lose with that sort of dominance.

danny

If Skinner was in the Nucks net tonight, we’d have 10

wood99

100%

Munny 2.0

Should be a dive too

innercitysmytty

Yeah that was a classic call because the oilers got too many PP in a row.

SK Oiler Fan

Predictable

Munny 2.0

Wona faceoff wow. Drai hits iron

thelongdark

12 goals on 47 shots so far this year.

Yikes.
