2021-22 Game 19: Oilers at Coyotes

by Lowetide
Darnell Nurse photo by Connor Mah

The Oilers are 1-1-0 without Darnell Nurse and 4-4-0 since that wild and crazy comeback against the New York Rangers. The game in Dallas featured stubborn individual efforts, wayward passing, forwards pulling the chute instead of hauling ass and defensemen getting passed like a house on the side of the road.

If the Oilers have any hopes of winning tonight, the execution and effort will need to be far better than fans saw from Texas on Tuesday.

THE ATHLETIC!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN NOVEMBER

  • At home to: SEA, NAS, NYR (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 3-0-0)
  • On the road to: DET, BOS, BUF, STL, WPG (Expected 3-2-0) (Actual 2-3-0)
  • At home to: WPG, CHI (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 2-0-0)
  • On the road to: DAL, ARI, VEG (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
  • Overall expected result: 8-5-0, 16 points in 13 games
  • Actual November results: 7-4-0, 14 points in 11 games
  • Oilers in 2021-22: 13-5-0, 26 points in 18 games

That might have been the worst game of the year, although the Detroit and Buffalo efforts were also poor. Edmonton’s road game turns them into road kill by the end of the first period, and last night the team couldn’t even manage a furious comeback. Nothing rhymed, the line shuffles made things worse and Duncan Keith got hurt. Positives? They were there, but it was a tough night to find them.

GOALIES

Stuart Skinner stopped 29 of 33, .879. He owns a .928 save percentage and played well in a game where the team in front of him was not sharp. Several 10-bell saves weren’t enough on the night, but there’s zero chance Skinner was part of the problem. One of the best Oilers on the night.

PAIRINGS

  • Philip Broberg-Cody Ceci played 17:33, going 8-6 shots, 0-2 goals, 0-2 HDSC
  • Kris Russell-Tyson Barrie played 10:48, going 2-3 shots, no goals and 0-1 HDSC.
  • Duncan Keith-Evan Bouchard played 9:01, 5-6 shots, no goals and 1-3 HDSC.
  • Kris Russell-Evan Bouchard played 7:01, 1-6 shots, 1-0 goals (!!) and 0-3 HDSC.
  • Tyson Barrie-Cody Ceci played 3:24, going 1-2 shots, 0-1 goals and 0-1 HDSC.

Broberg was soft on the clear before the first Dallas goal, with he and Bouchard unable to box out two Stars net front. Lots of learning opportunities there.

On the second Dallas goal, Derek Ryan and Kailer Yamamoto were both isolated high and that allowed the key cross-ice pass for the hammer and goal.

On the third Stars tally, Colton Sceviour did a good job checking and Connor McDavid almost intercepted a pass, but once Denis Gurianov got the puck in the neutral zone he was gone baby gone. Tyson Barrie won’t want to watch the tape, and people will talk about his speed, but the real key to the goal is that Gurianov was in full stride going through the neutral zone so Barrie’s choices were tripping or an ‘also in photo’ after a breakaway goal.

The fourth goal included Zach Hyman losing a faceoff (Dave Tippett used the big stir stick for line shuffling in this game) and Cody Ceci unable to tie up Luke Glendening’s stick.

LINES

  • Nuge-Draisaitl-Yamamoto: 10:25, 1-2 shots, no goals, no high danger
  • Foegele-McLeod-Kassian: 9:19, 3-3 shots, no goals, no high danger
  • Hyman-McDavid-Puljujarvi: 6:21, 6-5 shots, no goals, 1-2 HDSC
  • Perlini-McDavid-Draisaitl: 3:49, 0-2 shots, no goals, 0-2 HDSC
  • Sceviour-Ryan-Yamamoto: 3:09, 2-1 shots, no goals, 1-0 HDSC
  • Perlini-Ryan-Sceviour: 2:15, 0-1 shots, no goals, 0-1 HDSC
  • Draisaitl-McDavid-Puljujarvi: 2:06, nada
  • Nuge-Draisaitl-Puljujarvi: 1:43, 2-1 shots, no goals, no high danger
  • Perlini-McDavid-Sceviour: 1:31, 1-0 shots, 1-0 shots
  • Nuge-Hyman-Puljujarvi: 1:16, 0-2 shots, 0-1 goals, 0-1 HDSC

I bet even Craig MacTavish thought there was too much line shuffling. Look, I’m not like most of the people who comment here on the Oilers, I respect Dave Tippett’s work. I think he has had poor moments, like abandoning the defensemen who got him into the playoffs during the Winnipeg series, and overworking the goalie who is hot.

He’s also found a way to deploy more young prospects in three years than any coach since Glen Sather, so that’s a positive. He is brilliant with special teams and that’s a big advantage.

Last night, I think Tippett was the man who tried to do too much. I’m not sure what the fascination is with Perlini, but he’s a big man who can skate and so was J. F. Jacques. Perlini has played 12 games as an Oilers winger and has 0-0-0 beside his name. Maybe he is J.F. Jacques.

I follow Tippett’s thinking on most things, but the Perlini push is a bit of a bridge too far from here. It was perhaps poetic justice that, on a night when the captain had his point streak ended, it was a simple chip pass by Jesse Puljujarvi that ignited Edmonton’s only goal.

Sometimes in life, we think too much. Perhaps this is an example.

WHAT ABOUT KEITH?

My first thought is that he won’t play tonight and probably not on the weekend. It’s too soon for Darnell Nurse to return but don’t rule that out completely, the guy is very durable.

After that, it gets messy. I imagine Tippett will run Russell-Barrie, Broberg-Ceci and Lagesson-Bouchard. I’d run Broberg-Bouchard, Russell-Ceci and Lagesson-Barrie. You?

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

It’ll be a morning of strong conversations and furrowed brows beginning at 10, TSN1260. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey begins the proceedings at 10:20, we’ll talk of the Dallas game, the injuries and meeting the Coyotes in the middle of the desert on a dark November night when the top pairing isn’t known. Jose Romero from Arizona Central Sports kicks in at 10:40 with the latest on Phil Kessel’s team. At 11, Joe Osborne from OddShark tells us who is a good bet for Thanksgiving Thursday NFL games. We’ll have Crossfire! (pew! pew!) at 11:20. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!

LT’s ambitious November projections has been covered with one game to go.

I’m among the more optimistic and even I have to admit, it didn’t feel like a wildly successful month.

unca miltie

Final thoughts from tonight. Just after I said to my buddy about how well the 4th line was playing, they got scored on. The passing when McDavid and Drai are on the ice is incredible, not sure that Gretz and Kurri were ever that good together. Willy L played hard but struggles. Kassian played as well as I have ever seen him. I still think Broberg stays.
The Coyotes remind me of Oilers of not so long ago, a place where guys play their final NHL seasons. Erickson and Roussel for sure.

kgogshig

McDavid recently passed Taylor Hall in career points, ~ 270 fewer games.

He also blew past guys like James Neal, Logan Couture, Loui Erickson, Max Paciorettty in 400 fewer games.

Note there’s only 8 active players with more than 1000 NHL points…McDavid will likely break that mark before he turns 28….unless of course he gets thrown into the post head first every night.

innercitysmytty

What happened to Kopitar and the Kings?

tsunami

just wanted to ask the same thing ;)… come on HH, amuse us with some excuses please 🙂

Amadeus

Don’t worry. He will just pick a different team that is flying high currently. We will hear about the Calgary Flames for a bit now…

Sierra

So we complain about his trolling, beg him to go away, ask LT to ban him yet we troll HH when he’s all quiet?

jm363561

Take the win. Still not lost two in a row; Left side held up; Kass with a three point night; Mikko beaten by three redirects, but good overall; special teams very good (“You can’t stop these dudes” Arizona commentary); Benson(8.16 TOI) and Sceviour played well. Lost 5v5 3-2; lost Yamo completely; JP does not belong on the McLeod line. Do they ever practice 2 on 1’s?

Primetime

Hyman-RNH-JP
Foegle-McLeod-Yamo

Sierra

Now do lines 1 and 2

kgogshig

Lots of people here and on twitter gotta eat some serious crow regarding Tippet’s forward lines.

Looked to me like unicorns with gold teeth…managed to keep Drai and McD together and have 3 solid lines….Mcleod looking great at 3C

Material Elvis

Gangster unicorns for the win.

Admiral Ackbar

Everyone looks great against Ari. Next game is a quality litmus test.

OriginalPouzar

Except for the 3 teams they beat in their last 4 games prior to last night…

OriginalPouzar

Will be quite telling to see who Tip chooses to start on Saturday.

flea

I don’t think it’s a big deal either way. I’d expect he starts Skinner.

Material Elvis

I’m going to guess Koskinen on Saturday, then Tippett goes back to his 2 on 2 off alternating rotation that seemed to be effective in 19-20.

theDjdj

only two games in 6 days after this I think so hopefully enough time for players to get some rest and heal. Not sure where Nurse is at but hopefully Keith will be back first week of December.

kgogshig

Lol after Mcdavid’s EN goal he looked disgusted…he so badly wanted Drai to get the Hatty….

jp

No Oiler was outshot at 5v5 tonight. (4th line was even, everyone else was positive)

flea

They played ok. I feel like other teams go for tip plays way more than the Oilers. Would love to see the stats (attempted deflections) as both the ‘Yotes and Stars definitely try it more than the Oilers.

Liked Kass on the top line. Just goes to the net and creates space. Simple, effective hockey.

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Say what you will about Kassian, but he really took advantage of the opportunity presented to him tonight.

OriginalPouzar

I didn’t go back to see if he was the forward that should have recognized Barrie pinching down and covering so he may have been culpable on that but, other than that, I thought he had a very nice game. Lots of solid-plus passes in the neutral and offensive zones.

That line was 84% expected goals if one is in to that in single game samples and Kass was a part of that.

Cassandra

He was that forward. That goal is on him.

jp

That was a pretty decent game until the last 10 minutes or so (considering the B2B and the D injuries). At least points were banked in the end.

Don’t you have to clear the whole blue line to clear the zone??

I think that was a bad call.

think about cleaning the zone on a delayed offside. You don’t have to touch the blue, you have to clear the whole line.

Kert

I think they changed the wording when they changed the rule for “breaking the plane” of the leading edge of the blue line.

If an off-side call is delayed, the Linesman shall drop his arm to
nullify the off-side violation and allow play to continue if:
(i) All players of the offending team clear the zone at the same instant
(skate contact with the blue line) permitting the attacking players to
re-enter the attacking zone, or
(ii) The defending team passes or carries the puck into the neutral zone.

jojonoshow

Is this for holding the puck in the zone too?

very interesting.

Sincerely thank you for looking that up

So the Kraken bested the canes. Good for them!

Munny 2.0

Is the Kassian pump and dump working??
😉

Gerta Rauss

I hope so

Kenny should be working the phones night and day to move that contract

Munny 2.0

I think there’s a certain willingness by GMs to ignore the contract if they like the player. And in the playoffs there are no contracts. He’s the kind of player lots of GMs would value at the deadline. Is Holland any different or will he arbitrage that action? If he’s tradeable, wouldn’t he just prefer to do it in the summer? I don’t disagree with your hope, but I can see multiple paths through this.

A lot depends on what would be coming back (as per always).

Gerta Rauss

Kenny won’t trade him- he IS one of those GMs that value players like Kassian

Kassian is what he is – he looks like the solution to all your problems for a handful of games, and then isn’t a factor for 10-15 games

The Oilers are short on cap space next summer and Kassian is the guy I would move

jm363561

I thought it was more managing JP’s next contract.

Sierra

goal & 2 assists for Zac! Woot woot.

Gerta Rauss

Crisis averted

Everything’s super

Ice Sage

I think the Oilers got a call?

Munny 2.0

The toe scores!

Ice Sage

Hold onto yer hats

Munny 2.0

Lol, Drai ignores 97 for the ENer

OriginalPouzar

McDavid really wanted to feed Drai for that empty netter…. glad he made the decision to ensure the goal.

Chief Inspector

Phew… I think

OriginalPouzar

This would have been a time to sub Kass for a more responsible defensive zone player……

Crazy Pedestrian

Your mean like, any other forward on the roster?

Gerta Rauss

I was thinking the same thing while he struggled to get it out along the far wall

delooper

When defensemen are skating the puck up the ice, why don’t we see forecheckers hit them more often? That’s something I’ve never understood. Seems like it’s often a better play than waving your stick and backpedalling.

Faustkarz

take the man out, alright, now you’re also out of the play too; F more important for defence than a defenceman is for offense; especially when entering the zone

delooper

The crashes are spectacular. Glorious open-ice hits. I think I understand what you’re saying. I suppose the standard knowledge is that defensemen are these bigger-than-average beefcakes, so most forwards are going to fall in such a collision. But if you’re Jesse Pulijarvi, big and fast, you can probably knock down some of the smaller defensement out there and have a hope of recovering the puck. Am I wrong?

Chris B

Usually Dmen have enough time and space when skating out of the zone, they can read someone charging them down. They have a bunch of options. They get rid of the puck and now you gotta slow yourself or risk taking a charging call. Or its a shifty Dman and he makes you miss and look silly. Or its a bruiser and you don’t want to risk a head on collision with no clear advantage on someone like Darnell Nurse. It would be better to pick your spots on someone when there isn’t a lot of time and space.

Chief Inspector

Wedgewood is why this is 4-3 and not 8-3. He has been brilliant.

Munny 2.0

Everything Ghost touches is dangerous.

Crazy Pedestrian

Gotta make sure you’re always facing them. Turn around, and they get ya!

Chief Inspector

Great defensive play by the captain

delooper

Kassian’s post appears to have been a deflection. His shot was off-net.

We’ve gone full firewagon

jp

I like that pass by McLeod (even though it didn’t go)

Munny 2.0

Shoulda shot in the first place Kass

jp

That was a big save by Koskinen.

Chief Inspector

Can’t fault him for any of the goals tonight. He has been solid.

Ice Sage

Time out?

jp

Nuge with number 2 on the year.

delooper

This might have to be a 6-goal night for Draisaitl.

theDjdj

christ team looks dead in the water. Back to back road games showing here.

Material Elvis

Too close for my liking. Lagesson was out to lunch on that shift.

Ice Sage

Whoooops

jp

Whoah.

delooper

Coyotes have woken up.

Chief Inspector

Not pretty

theDjdj

Keller is a player

rickithebear

Pre Draisaitl draft, Raiders Personel said he was the best passer they had ever Coached (Getzlaf), was a Raider (Modano)

OriginalPouzar

Sceviour not tying up the stick in front solely to provide Drai with the EN hatty opportunity.

delooper

That was a near-magical redirection by Boyd. Well-earned.

Munny 2.0

thank gord for insurance insurance.

OriginalPouzar

OK, we are getting to the point where talking about 50 in 50 is going to become a legit conversation and not a “Matthews will score 50 in the 56 game season” crap from the two weeks in to last season.

DevilsLettuce

40pts.. Smoke em if you got em

jp

Evander Kane?

DevilsLettuce

I don’t think anyone should try that strain.

jp

That really is impressive though in game 19.
