This month begins with some visible worry on the brow. Chaos, panic, and stark imagery seem certain in the days to come. I don’t think we’ll reach ‘Donner Party’ or ‘Tecumseh Valley’ but am fairly certain you will read ‘same as it ever was’ and ‘we hoped for the best but it turned out the same’ in the next 31 days.
Today, I’m tasked with predicting the impossible: Edmonton’s record in the coming month. Perhaps the hockey Gods can gift me the number of games to be played by Edmonton’s rookie defensemen? Perhaps the number of games where three rookie defensemen play in the same game?
No? Okay, here we go. Did you know the Coen brothers had a difficult finishing the script for the all-time classic Miller’s Crossing? Did you also know that, in order to clear their minds, they put that script behind and wrote Barton Fink? Which is about writer’s block? We may have to spend time on the draft and prospects in December to keep our heads.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN DECEMBER
- At home to: PIT (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: SEA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: LAK, MIN, BOS, CAR, TOR, CBJ (Expected 3-3-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: SEA (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: ANA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: LAK, SJS, CAL, STL, NJD (Expected 3-2-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 8-7-0, 16 points in 15 games
- Actual December results: 0-0-0, 0 points in 0 games
- Oilers in 2021-22: 15-5-0, 30 points in 20 games
If the Oilers cover my bet, they’ll finish December at 23-12-0, 46 points in 35 games. That trajectory would land Edmonton at 108 points (54-28-0). I’m clearly hedging here, but the current defensive group is a big worry. The first eight games should be considered a success if Edmonton gets eight points based on the current defense.
THE CURRENT DEFENSE
I chose some categories that have value to me and not to you. My hope is the comments section spends the next 10 hours discussing the value of Corsi Rel in a mature way. Haha, just kidding, I know you hate it, but for me it’s the quickest way to find out what’s shakin’ at the malt shop. In the Oilers case, Nurse-Bouchard is an island, Broberg has enjoyed a few strong games.
Puck IQ will be up and running soon, they need a little more time for the tubes to warm up. In the meantime my sincere wish is that you get rel rel gone with these numbers.
To use a Miller’s Crossing reference, Edmonton’s defense is without the hi-hat this evening. Daniel Nugent-Bowman’s excellent piece at The Athletic has Oilers general manager Ken Holland looking at this series of injuries as a ‘team building opportunity‘ and an investment in the future.
I remember a time when an NHL team ran a bunch of kids on defense and can tell you it’s a wild ride. Not the thrill you get at the summer fair, but rather the real danger one faced when driving through the Fraser Canyon in the 1960’s. It’s a long way down.
On November 14, 1968, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Montreal Canadiens at the Forum. TML won the game 5-3, Bruce Gamble stopping 39 of 42 shots. In that game, rookies Mike Pelyk (game No. 35), Jim McKenny (game No. 14) and Jim Dorey (game No. 13) all played a role. It was also Pat Quinn’s rookie year and he played a significant amount.
I think we can agree that among the young blue playing tonight, the best bets for long NHL careers are Bouchard and Broberg. Lagesson and Markus Niemelainen (recalled yesterday) will have to earn their careers through fits, starts and staying power based on what we know today.
Niemelainen
He is a big, strong defenseman who can punish opponents, we knew it on draft day. What we didn’t know, and was obscured by playing for a middling team in the Liiga, is Niemelainen can skate and move the puck. I’m happy to see him make the NHL, Jesse Puljujarvi and Tyler Benson finally have some company from that 2016 draft.
When Niemelainen steps on the ice, the 2016 draft will become the sixth draft from the 2010’s to send three men to the show. The 2011 draft, with 1,539 games, is the top single draft of the decade, having passed the 2010 draft along the way. The champion will probably be 2015 someday.
At this time of year people tend to look at the standings and forget that games played is part of the equation. For some reason, people forget that ‘winning percentage’ is the best way to observe this, and forget to swear at Bettman for his blasted Bettman point. I trust you will shake your fist in the direction of Manhattan today for the greater good.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
A busy morning on the Lowdown, TSN1260 beginning at 10. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal will tee up the game and I’ll poke and prod his memory banks for recalls on nights when as many as four young blue faced an NHL team on the same night. Joe Osborne from Odds Shark will discuss the NBA, the Oilers and MLB’s free agency. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk in 90!
I gently mocked Russell in the thread below, but he fully earned his salary and more last night!

Nurse and Keith will not be ready for Friday. Nurse maybe Sunday.
Tipp is asked about whose man Guentzal was on his goal and he laughed. Said if he was a betting man the guy who missed his assignment was the LAST player he would’ve expected.
It was Nuge. Said he never had to say a word to him either… he knew. Called it one of those brain cramps that happen. Said they had just covered the play at 6.30.
I thought Tippett had a decent game tonight
That sounds like a fireable offense. 16-5? Pfft.
As much as I hate to admit it, I agree.
I wonder if this stretch of injury adversity might actually help the club in the long run? Guys forced to take their game up to another level to cover, and then staying elevated.
whole barn is getting at-bats, solid battle-hardened depth for playoffs
Since Lowetide likes to play the grinch who stole Christmas with those annoyingly prescient predictions; tonight’s game feels like a King Sized Victory…
Besides keeping the trolls at bay.
No doubt about it. You can’t discount the importance of learning to win when things aren’t going your way.
To tell you the truth I thought Nemo looked better tonight than Lagesson did in his first game. It’s just one game, but there might be a journeyman there.
Agreed but Wild Billy looked like he was playing tougher minutes. Nonetheless, Nemo looked far more poised in all areas, to my eye.
I’m not talking about Lagesson tonight. I’m comparing their first games.
Laggy got the puck to Drai before he made that 70 foot backhand to 97 on Boosh’s goal.
And I should clarify better what I mean… I think Nemo looked more comfortable and poised and assertive tonight than Laggy did in his first game. The beginning doesn’t compel the ending but it’s an arrow.
Nemo takes his first post-game with 97. Got the call in the grocery store.
Rob Brown rightly praising Russell and Barrie. I thought this was one of Barrie’s best games in his own end.
Rusty played 22 minutes at 5 on 5 and over 26 overall. Ya, he got killed on the shot metrics but, really, again, how many high danger chances?
Not a ton to my eye.
3-1 goals at 5 on 5 and 4-1 overall.
Barrie was similar.
2HDCF and 2HDCA for the pairing
How does Barrie get to the NHL with no idea of how to play defence?
It seems impossible. What was he doing on the 2nd Pens goal?
That wasn’t defence. It was politely welcoming guests into the slot, while backing away to make room for them to shoot.
Yeah, they won. Praising Barrie seems daft.
That seems more than a little harsh, both on that goal, and on the night (where Barrie played 20+ minutes at 5v5, being on for 3GF/1GA, and that play was one of only 2 HDCA allowed on the evening).
Not to mention is was a quick strike 3 on 2 that started when he was trying to get off the ice and he never got settled on which of the two non-puck carriers to take.
One could just as easily criticize Hyman for not bearing down and getting the puck in deeps knowing his D were on the long change and needed it and they had a one-goal lead.
Talk about an unexpected, and fully deserved, win. McD 1-3-4 +5; Mikko the Magnificent SV 94.1% without ever seemingly stick handling the puck once. Zach Hyman beaming 96.2% of the game; Kris Russell 26.53 0-1-1 +3, but only 4 blocks. Yamo and Sceviour done good. Two 2 on 1s converted. Cups runnething over all over. We just need OP refrain from asking how many points we get for an injury riddled roster beating a team in yellow on a Wednesday with a full moon.
I was at that Calgary-Pittsburgh game. While I expected Pittsburgh to play better (and they did) I wasn’t thinking they were unbeatable even with our rookie D
Hyman throwing hats back to fans apparently (according to the TNT crew).
Hyman’s going to write a passive aggressive children’s book about the boy who had his hats stolen from him by some punk named Cailer.
Wait what!? This is the Oilers first reg. Win over Pitts in 15 years!?!?
wow…
2006 on the backs of a Horcoffian hatty
Another plus point about the win. It puts to bed the question regarding what will happen if the Oilers don’t get any goals from their powerplay. They can apparently still score goals in other game states. Who’d have thunk it.
Crazy game. Nice to win games when they look overwhelmed at times (rightfully so). Our Condors defense is holding and Kris Russell is having a Renaissance moment.
That was very much a bend but don’t break game. The kids really held it together..
Let’s take the 2 points and never speak of this again
Why?
Adjustments were made for the 3rd and the Oilers played a fantastic 3rd period.
Lots of zone time and lots of shots for the Pens but, really, were there a ton of Grade A’s? Not really.
Given the circumstances, kudos to the BEST TEAM IN THE NHL.
C’mon, it was said tongue in cheek
Have a warm cocoa before bed and calm down
In a universe that contains McCurdy and Lowetide…?
The first 2 periods were rough, but the Oilers came on strong in the 3rd and beat Jarry and the Penguins with the Bakersfield Condors playing D.
I am pleased with it.
After the 2nd period, Oilers Twitter was awash with “fire Tippett” because a 15-5 team missing their top 3 d-men (and 4 of the top 7) was being outshot by a good team and Kassian was struggling on the first game.
The game was tied.
That coach made changes in the 3rd and the 3rd was a phenomenal period for the home team.
16-5 – with massive adversity – winning with massive adversity.
Beating contending teams with massive adversity.
What a surreal game.
Got their show totally run for 30-40 minutes but went to the 2nd intermission even. Then an actually quality 3rd period in a tie game.
Koskinen was very good, and the young D held (only 2 GA and 33 SA is more than respectable). Hyman and McDavid with big games too obviously.
Oilers win. Into 1st overall for now too!
Unreal.
How many standings points is this game worth?
Malkin isn’t playing – negative 1.
Damn. I thought we might at least hold on to nul.
The Penguins are an Eastern team that made the playoffs last year; however, Malkin is injured and the Oilers won at home.
This win is worth 0 points, unfortunately.
But it’s like 3 for the Condors right?
-3
AVS are looking healthy, look out
They didn’t look to healthy tonight.
HiiYooo!!!
Jack is right. the goals tonight came from the forwards helping out big-time deep in their own end. Hopefully, they remember that.
McDavid with a quiet ?4? point night.
And he was plus 5. Connor sent the pass back to Russell, over to Barrie for the shot and the Kailer tip, so no point. Also denied an assist on the overturned goal, but might not have had the empty net opportunity at 5-2.
Hits are 43-15 for the bad guys.
And all of a sudden Kass remembers he forechecks
Cros pickin on Wild Bill
Mikko massive stop. Impressive.
The best part of that no goal play was mcdavid dancing Crosby with a stutter step leaving the defensive zone. Beauty.
Hyman has to be one of the if not the best FA signings in Oilers history at this point.
FanSided has Lucic #1 after his first season (no sekera); I’d go Sekera, Hyman, Staios though subject to change as Hyman settles in long term 🙂
maybe Koskinen ends up on that list by EOY lol
Charlie Huddy, Craig MacTavish, Randy Gregg, Sheldon Souray, Dustin Penner…
fair, I’m too young
Sekera was a terrific signing very true. Staios was a FA? He’d be up there too, good memory.
I’ll never get tired of watching Jesse stuff his tongue up his right nostril.
Artists rendition:
Please save this image ….post it every time Jesse scores
Maybe we can get @Isuckatpicking to photoshop it up a bit
I zhuzh’d it up a bit:

This is great.
He licks it like he put chocolate up there before the game.
Damn. Yamamoto was offside.
Ugh – i saw that though.
This is a crazy game, lol.
Looks like no goal probably.
A tic and a tac and a toe
And the Hatty for Hyman is still on ice
Hyman hat trick!
If that was onside, that was another beautiful goal – that may have been offside.
That’s coming back
Krusty with a nice hit
Bison King back in action.
The hooves are unscathed
Clearly been a lot of practice on 2 on 1s this week. Thrilling goal by Bouchard. Run of the mill brilliance by McD.
Don’t want to jinx the guy but Sceviour is a pretty good 4th liner.
Good to see Pulju back!
Matheson played that perfectly IMO
Yeah that was really nice.
Awful non call
I think it was good defence.
did you think it was late? Mcdavid tried to go around him, but he played the body. All g imo
Upon further review the timing was better than I initially thought
Anyone else having issues with the sports net app?
I keep losing my feed and have to go all the way out and back in. Missed the Bouch goal because of it.
sportnet tv feed has been choppy as well
had to switch to streameast.io working well
What a pass from Drai
Fuckin Draisaitl and his backhands.
Best backhand passer on the planet.
hahaha,,,,
Look Ma we have a D man with hands.
Boosh beauty
Bouchard scores! What a pass by McDavid.
The Drai pass may have been just as good, or better….
Another look-off pass
Yep. Looking straight at Jarry when he dished that beauty.
No matter what happens tonight, seeing Marino take one in the family jewels was pretty satisfying. Next time just sign with the oilers bro. Plus he was laughing too. Everyone had a good time!
When Marino got hit in the junk and I laughed, and Jack laughed and Louie laughed, and Marino got up laughing, I had to wonder why it seems to be universally funny for someone to get hit in the junk. If Marino got hit anywhere else, it would most likely not be funny. I wonder if there is some evolutionary advantage or explanation as to why it’s funny.
common experience of men regarding our most vulnerable weakness “damn! that’s gotta hurt LOL”
That’s a sick goal. Wow.
