2021-22 Game 36: Panthers at Oilers

by Lowetide

“Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?” -Indiana Jones.

The Florida Panthers own a goal differential of +43, compared to Edmonton’s 0 (or nil). The Oilers badly need two points and the Panthers are 8-1-1 in the last 10 games and likely grumpy after a loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Then again, a victory against a strong team like Florida might be a pivotal moment in a season that bewitches, bothers and bewilders.

It’s been weird, man. Take the last 10 games. Please.

THE ATHLETIC!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN JANUARY

  • On the road to: NYI, NYR, TOR (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 0-2-1)
  • At home to: OTT, FLA, CGY (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
  • On the road to: VAN (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: NAS (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: MTL, OTT (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 4-5-1, 9 points in 10 games
  • Actual January results: 0-3-1, 1 point in 3=4 games
  • Oilers in 2021-22: 18-15-2, 38 points in 35 games

A miserable month, second in a row, and what’s worse the team had to roll around in it for a few extra days. Things go fast in a hurry now, though. The NHL laid down the February schedule and Edmonton have no time to think in the next six weeks.

LAST 10 GAMES

Here is the five-on-five goal differential for Oilers forwards over the last 10 games. I’ll list them as they appeared in practice the other day, with Brendan Perlini on the top line. If he doesn’t play tonight, it’ll be Warren Foegele getting the push.

  • Brendan Perlini [4-2]; Connor McDavid [5-6]; Kailer Yamamoto [7-11]
  • Zach Hyman [3-6]; Leon Draisaitl [7-15]; Jesse Puljujarvi [3-6]
  • Warren Foegele [6-6]; Ryan McLeod [4-2]; Zack Kassian [4-2]
  • Devin Shore [4-3]; Derek Ryan [4-4]; Colton Sceviour [5-3]

I don’t like these lines and we should keep in mind the shuffle could hit at any time tonight, but I am intrigued with the shot share and expected goal share (five-on-five) for these lines. Florida’s expected goal share this season is 55.7, Edmonton 50.6 percent. I wonder how many lines are at 50 percent for the Oilers at the end of the night.

  • Darnell Nurse [5-6]; Cody Ceci [7-10]
  • Duncan Keith [10-6]; Tyson Barrie [5-5]
  • Kris Russell [0-0]; Evan Bouchard [9-13]

Nurse coming off injury, Russell just back, and some poor play have all contributed to these numbers. Credit to Duncan Keith, who has played well in the last 10 games. Oilers badly need the Nurse pairing to work, meaning Bouchard needs to be strong enough to be an option. This isn’t a good defense, they miss Adam Larsson.

STOP MAKING SENSE

Poster JP dropped by to throw the following verbal on to the blog:

If the Oilers can pull their crap together the rest of the Pacific has done them a huge favour. They haven’t really fallen back of the pack at all in the last 2-3 weeks despite continuing to suck.

Standings points from their last 5 games for Pacific division teams:

  • SJS 7
  • LAK 6
  • VAN 4
  • VEG 3
  • EDM/CGY/ANA/SEA 2

GOALIE SEARCH

It’s out there from enough credible sources that Ken Holland is knocking on doors in search of goaltending help. Man, it’s a tough market, and when you force a trade, you lose it.

For me, I think Koskinen can handle one part of the job if he’s not overworked. Smith is a complete wildcard, at this point there’s no way to count on him. Skinner had one tough outing Saturday but for me he’s a solid option, certainly more reliable than Smith if only due to health.

JACOB STOLLER

If you don’t follow Jacob Stoller on twitter, it would be a good idea to add him. He’s from Winnipeg and one of the smart people looking at problems this blog is interested in. For some reason I can’t grab the tweet I’m about to discuss, so will describe it. Stoller’s twitter account is @JLStoller.

In a recent tweet, Stoller listed the top AHL defensemen using a mysterious but fact-based formula. Using InStatHockey and AHL Tracker, and Dom Luszczyszyn’s game score model, he found a credible way to rank the AHL’s U-23 defensemen. Philip Broberg is No. 4 overall. That’s a good, good sign.

LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE

At 10 this morning, we have a rocking show planned for you. Chris Johnston, TSN Insider, will join us and chat about the tough NHL trade market and how much a goalie trade might cost the Oilers. We’ll also preview the Oilers-Panthers and discuss the new lines and pairings. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. It’s getting warmer!

Big goal for Bouchard and the Oilers.

Shamus23

Skinner was killing it in the A for all of last year and this .

Ryan

I think trading for a Holtby, Khudobin, or Korpisalo would be a terrible idea and waste of assets.

A team with an analytics department and good scouts would be trying to an emerging goalie, someone killing the AHL or playing effectively as a backup.

Someone not in the guide and record book.

jp

FYI all the drafted prospects are in the guide and record book too, pretty sure.

Ryan

Lol, I’ve never actually seen the Guide and Record book.

I meant someone that doesn’t have a cup ring, hasn’t been on the All-Star team, etc.

jp

Haha, I know.

But the guide and record book does have basically all the information that’s available online about AHL, junior, European players who are property of NHL teams.

Identifying and adding an emerging goalie (who’s better than Skinner and Konovalov) would obviously be really nice.

I think chasing former glory in Holland’s adds is being greatly overstated btw. Really only Keith fits that bill (maybe Smith to an extent too, but he was a high end NHLer within the past year). Veterans with cup finals experience (Neal, Chiasson) were cut loose in favor of Ryan, Benson, Perlini, Shore, McLeod and the like.

Ryan

Still, Holland only deals in established talent.

Guys that you know exactly what they are and you pay them in full and for their declining years. It explains the delay on the Nurse contract too.

This is why he’s not a modern GM and this is why we’re here.

If someone invented the fountain of youth and Holland got a 100-year contract to be the Oilers GM, he would never trade for a Ryan Graves, a Girard, heck he didn’t even claim Nedekjkovic when he was short a goalie and had every reason to.

jp

Nope, he’s not finding the Graves’ or Girard’s, and agree not picking Ned off waivers was strange. Agree he’s mostly dealing in established talent (failed European bets aside).

The paying full for declining years is Nuge, Hyman and Nurse I guess. Possibly Barrie too, but his deal is from 30-32 years old. Foegele and Ceci clearly don’t fit the bill. And Larsson wasn’t offered long term, even if 4-5 years was still too much.

I don’t really agree it’s the reason for waiting on Nurse. Folks here wanted him signed to term for $6Mish, and there was a ton of skepticism he was a 1st pair defenseman. If he’d been signed then for $7.5Mx8 I don’t think the response here would have been positive. Now we’re questioning why it wasn’t done (essentially, why wasn’t he signed to a deal he wouldn’t have accepted, or one that posters here wouldn’t have been happy with).

ArmchairGM

Any names come to mind? I’d give Konovalov the start tomorrow if Smith and Skinner aren’t ready.

UnjustEnrichment

Nurse spoke like a true captain in his post-game interview. He and Keith are much most poised and thoughtful leaders than are the superstars.

Can the focus of the next forensic audit be the previous forensic auditors?

The team played very well for 40 minutes. Darnell Nurse and Duncan Keith were both very good.

I get the feeling that McDavid is not his usual self; something is up there, perhaps a lingering undisclosed injury or perhaps just overall unhappiness.

Macleod is emerging, even if slowly. He still needs more fire in his belly, and needs to insert himself in front of the opposing net with more authority (he should keep playing the Puljujarvi video for tips on how to do this without getting penalties).

The team could use both Hyman and Archibald, both to stir up trouble behind the net and along the boards.

Konovalov deserves a shot or two. Might as well find out what we have before we do something in a panic.

Todd Macallan

I wonder if McDavid getting Covid for the 2nd time recently is impacting him, keeping in mind in the past he would seem to annually get a resp infection that impacted him for a handful of games as well.

ArmchairGM

Oilers fans seem to hate the idea of giving Konovalov a start, preferring rather to trade assets for a young emerging goalie like Vejmelka. But what exactly is it that they see in Vejmelka that they don’t in Konovalov? It’s not track record, as the 25 year old Vejmelka sported a career .913 in Czechia, decidedly worse numbers than the 23 year old Konovalov posted (career .922 in KHL) in a decidedly better league.

Vejmelka hasn’t played in the AHL so we can’t really compare the two very closely, but is it far fetched to think Konovalov can match Vejmelka’s 3.10 GAA and .910 sv% in the NHL? You don’t know until you try.

tileguy

I want to thank Jim Matheson for pouring gasoline on the fire and helping in burning away any civic pride we have as the rest of the country chortles. Now let’s see you piss on the fire and put it out.

Professor Q

With Katz present for the scouting missions lately, I really do hope that this loss spurs momentum into drastic changes starting from way above coaching level. I know it sucks to do it once again in this 12-13 year period, but it seems like the time is nigh. I also should have learned not to trust HOPE fully years ago. Everything has caveats in Edmonton.

Munny 2.0

I hope Tyson Barrie is okay.

Shamus23

People walking out of the a arena looked just as stunned and defeated as the team did.
Just watched the coaches presser and he looks defeated.
No bounces in that 1st that we needed.
Everyone totally gave up after the 3rd goal.
So now what?
Will Skinner be allowed to play Sat?
I honestly don’t know how you play Mikko ever again. Not blaming this on him, but he has to make 2 of the 1st 3 goal saves.
If we lose to Calgary I cannot see how Tippet keeps his job. And if Holland doesn’t fire him then Holland needs to go.

What a terrible spot this team is in. The more games we lose, the more the asking price will be for any goalie. PERIOD.

The Eastern media is just going to keep dumping on this team up and until the puck is dropped on Sat. Boys should turn off the TV’s and not look at social media.

CALGARY is a double must win. My bet is Sutter has them ready to pick the meat off the bones .

S.O.B

This really sucks

€√¥£€^$

What an amazing 1st period. That’s as far as I was able to see and then I was called out to work.

I’ll watch the rest in the morning, just got home.

Good night all!

JimmyV1965

The goal scoring will get straightened out. McDavid has one secondary assist in the last four games. The goaltending won’t.

Material Elvis

If Holland can’t find a solution for net, it should cost him his job. There is absolutely no excuse for this team to miss the playoffs. They need average goaltending to do so. They need a change in net ASAP or the season will be lost. This is on Holland.

rickithebear

Brew ha ha:
you cannot measure a goalies performance until you calculate the Cummulative xG of open shots and subtract goals.

My first Open Shot shot success density map was manually calculated from part of 07/08 season.
Same as player approx. WOWY.
Thank heavens for the WaoWY site.

I created a written a verbal steps to proper proper puck path on Lowetide fairly early on the blog.
it involved x,y release and y,z location of shot in open space.
the fevered 80’s analytic resistance to open shot (the first dip in the Lowetide waters) was worse than “RickisBox”

rickithebear

ED oil1:
my first real comment interaction on HF boards as Oilerbear was a duiscussion who was tougher player was 07/08.
Simmonds or Eberle.
I argued Eberle and others said Simmonds.they had a standard 80’s mentality. Mine was based the toughness needed to create high% win factors.

A. the true Dzone was hell.

Eberle had the toughness & Skill to penetrate that area.
Simmonds was a peripheral shooter early in his career at even.

B. Successful Open shot targeting is counter to 200,000 years of Bio evo beast hunting.

** Eberle understood that successful open shot location in Net elevation (y,z). He had better targeting concentration in the physical area.

I identified the area Flin Flon bombers defended with violence years ago at age 4.
Identified table hockey goalie movement (Phase 1 of tracking) by Ron Gunville by age 10.

they became the critical factors in NHL when both became dominate early 90’s. thru End of poor 80’s stand-up & expansion of 80’s goalie equipment.

McSorley33

Stopped being about the team, long ago.

Like previous management regimes, I am now in it for the defenders of them.

Incredibly, even some defences this past week.

The crew will have to up there game tomorrow though.

Oilers humiliation starting to -gain national attention

Already seen it tonight ….we played but…but…but…

A moral victory nearly – every night- for some!

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

Also, they cannot start Mikko again, can they?

Durag

I’d rather run Stalock out there

Material Elvis

I wonder what the Zamboni goalie is up to?

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

Wow. Glad I went skating tonight.

I am looking forward to the draft posts to start.

Tracking prospects hurts less than this team.

rickithebear

I was wondering how the Oilers would do against a top open shot defensive team.
I went to the NHL Highlight channel in first period I saw a 15 shot & O goal count.
thought wonder how many or if their were any open shots.
Open shots win factor % is :
100% – own goals % each season.

There are a few Peripheral factors that have a 85% capture rate of Chanmpionship roster core players.

Which is reflected in the Critical NHL goal Formula.
OS – Open shot; Sp – Specific
OS Success density (Sp y,z) x OS volume (Sp x,y) = Goal mass (3D Reflection of a goal path)

Brewha Ha

Tonight, everyone including the hockey gords, saw the impact of an Elite goalie on a game, and the importance of the position. The Oilers are flawed in many ways and yes they were not the more talented team, but the clearest and most obvious difference was in net. Same as it has been for since forever.

Last edited 2 years ago by Brewha Ha
Justthestatsman

Yes, tonight was exhibit A for the impact of an elite goalie. One team got saves tonight and the other didn’t. Even if you say most of the goals weren’t Mikko’s fault, if you’re going to win, you need to make almost all of the saves that you should make and a bunch that you shouldn’t.

Mikko has been good at times, even this year but now his confidence is shot and the team sags with every goal he lets in. It’s too bad they almost have to go back to him on Saturday night. Maybe they need to send Hyman into the locker room to cough on Mikko.

edoil1

That sad part about this whole situation is the way this team is constructed, soft players, poor defense. That even if they fire Tippet,Holland or both I don’t see much changing.Bringing in a Hitchcock type coach or an average goalie will just be bandaides.Having a few great expensive players at the top can still produce a good team,Pittsburg has done it,so another semi rebuild?

fistycuff

Pittsburgh has had good to elite goaltending every season. When they didn’t, they lost out.

Last edited 2 years ago by fistycuff
edoil1

True, and there we go again, that’s on Holland and Tippet too, as I am sure he wanted his guy Smith for another old time shot at another season or two.

JimmyV1965

The most egregious giveaway by any dman tonight was by Ekblad right to an Oiler in the middle of the circle. We didn’t score. If that’s an Oiler dman, the puck is in the net.

We can talk about team construction and all the flaws on the roster, but nothing will change unless we have a goalie.

Ryan

This whole situation sucks. We’re capped out with a heavily flawed roster rife with poor contracts, but you know what’s the most infuriating part?

Okay, I’ll tell you.

What really sucks is that I can’t find someone to pay me $5m usd per year to do a really shitty job at something! 😉

verite

No reason for humour.
Holland must be fired tonight.

JOFA

Yes. We all need to be depressed. No having fun Al😄

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Made me laugh. So you have to buy a lottery ticket to win the lottery?

Ryan

Do you happen to have Darryl’s contact coordinates? 🙂 Nicely done btw!

TheTikk

What’s the advanced stat for bad juju? (It’s probably PDO).

LMHF#1

What’s the line from the media crew in the AM?

”What a first period! Wow!”?

”The Panthers are just SO good.”?

”Mikko Koskinen’s performances damage his team’s psyche.”?

”Something something STABILITY something something”?

Sierra

The team’s performance damages the goalies’ psyche

JimmyV1965

I don’t know how we can blame anyone but the goalie. He gave up two goals on 11 shots. The team was dominating up to that point, maybe their best 30 minutes of the year. The goalie let them down again and they fell apart – shocker. At this point, the nicest thing Holland can do for Koskinnen is send him away. Put him out of his misery already.

LMHF#1

Playing hard without scoring is not dominating.

This is a narrative that needs to end.

If you’re not scoring – you’re not playing well enough. You aren’t doing the important part.

verite

Koskinen is not a goalie .

LMHF#1

I don’t disagree.

But this squad isn’t scoring worth a damn since Tippett mused about “tightening up” when they were in first place.

Need to do at least one of the two things at an elite level.

DevilsLettuce

Yes they need to score, but they need to see their keeper match the opposing keeper. The score got out of hand once they stopped fighting, and they stopped fighting because of a glove hand that hasn’t seen a goal worth stopping. Bob’s 40 save shut out was more then well earned he won them the game, mostly goalie.

Sierra

It is Mikko’s fault – he didn’t score.

McSorley33

Wow.

But we didn’t score a single goal?

Material Elvis

The team clearly wilted after the first soft goal. A good goalie stops that and the team keeps battling because they believe the have a chance to win. Right now, the team doesn’t believe they can win because they can’t get saves when they need them. It’s a psychological issue that could be remedied with decent goaltending.

Harpers Hair

Let’s reflect on the fact that had the Oilers PP not have been firing at 50+% early in the season, they might be fighting for last in the WC.

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Do we have to?

Bling

Keith is just gassed in the press conference, short of breath.

Ice Sage

I will completely understand (and wish them well) if 97 and/or 29 pull a Pronger.
This is a shameful joke, and we’ve all seen it coming for months.

LMHF#1

Not all. Far from it. There’s a ton of passengers still on the ‘patiently enjoying the journey off the cliff’ train. They should own that. They won’t.

It reminds me of Bart sitting there rocking back and forth saying “Krusty is coming” while he’s busy freezing to death at Kamp Krusty.

jp

I still think they make the playoffs. 🤷

Ryan

Without a coaching change and a new goalie?

https://twitter.com/OilersNerdAlert/status/1484384717575127041

jp

Probably.

That’s not to say those things shouldn’t or won’t happen, but likely even without them IMO.

TheTikk

Agreed, they should both impregnate local weather reporters tonight.

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

So very funny. Thank you for this.

Reja

They’re not allowed to have fun anymore they’ll get ratted out.

Ice Sage

LOL – finally convert on a 2 on 1…

jp

Is 6 weeks ‘months’? Less than 2 months ago the Oilers were 1st in the league.

If Connor or Leon ask out after an ugly 6 week stretch where they’re outscored as much/more than anyone else on the team, well maybe they are the problem.

Which isn’t to say they actually are the problem, but I also don’t see them asking out after 6 weeks of bad hockey, for which they’re partly culpable.

Ice Sage

Yeh, but, as giddy as we were, we knew it was a mirage. The Keith and Smith bets were widely known to be the mis-steps of a bygone GM.
Why can’t this team develop secondary scoring? Why is the D so bad – the personnel isn’t that terrible. Why are other teams having such an easy time of it now vs the Oil?
The playbook is so obvious – stifle 97 and 29 and shoot from everywhere on the mediocre goalies – a good, creative, tough coach comes up with antidotes. A good GM keeps some cap space in the kitty for emergencies.
And so it goes – for the superstars, it’s been 5-6 years of no progress – how many talented folks would just put up with that?

jp

Did McDavid and Draisaitl (and the rest of the players) think Keith and Smith were mis-steps?

They didn’t sound like they did (following the Keith trade, for instance), but it’s tough to know for sure.

In terms of no progress, Holland and Tippett have still (today) presided over 3 of the 4 best Oiler seasons (along with 16-17) of McDavid’s career. And of the last decade. So ‘no progress’ really depends on how you look at things.

KnightRain

This team needs to learn what kind of effort it takes to win the tough games. The first period was exactly how we need to play, regardless if the score. The other problem we now have is confidence. We got scored on and fell apart. Zero confidence. Zero pushback. Zero fortitude to keep pushing. We had chances but fumbled pucks or flat out missed easy plays. I don’t know how to get that back.
Everybody talks about getting a goalie but what goalie, in their right mind, would want to play on a team like this right now?
My biggest fear is that a knee jerk trade will be made and hurt our team for years…sigh…I actually hope it’s a Tippet and/or Holland firing…

Richard Roma

No offense dude, but that shit drives me crazy.

This isn’t a “fragile team” or a team without confidence or a team that cannot exert effort.

This is a poorly constructed team with no goalie. That’s it.

Johnny skid

did you notice that no one scored a goal?

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Exactly. EDM lost because nobody was going to score on Bob tonight. Period.

KnightRain

I agree with that and that is totally 💯 on the GM. But they way they played the first and folded after we got scored on underscores the fragility of the team. I’m not saying that if we scored we would have saved the season but when we don’t have success any adversity kills us. This team, and I hate saying this, is broken…

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Do the LT posts about the draft arrive when analytics (playoffs odds) hit a certain level or is it done on more of a Ken Holland gut feel timeline?

jtblack

He posted one this week

Diablo

I decided to hit the gym and do a boot camp workout … first game all season I haven’t watched the Oilers play this season. I’m guessing it was far less painful than watching the Oilers play tonight.

LMHF#1

That’s called a good life choice.

JOFA

Did you see OP?

OriginalPouzar

It was extremely fun to watch the Oilers play through 40 minutes.

Brewha Ha

I agree Op. I enjoyed many parts of the game, but then, I didn’t expect a win. especially knowing that FLA was gonna start Bob. I think losing is not as painful if a loss is expected.

TheTikk

Funny thing is, Holland doesn’t know how to fire a coach. He’s literally never done it.

What an orgy of failure the Katz years have been. Fate gifts you the two best offensive players on earth, and you hire by reputation and convert your good fortune into a blip of mediocrity in the darkness.

An all-time case study in ineptitude.

Good night and good luck, all.

And he hasn’t even called a timeout!

How can we have the Balance Photo and Nadir’s Raiders all in the same half-season?

MushedPeas

Did I miss the balance photo..?!?!?

Fire Holland tonight

Admiral Ackbar

Just like with vaccinations: doing nothing is an action in itself. Ken Holland’s inaction has lost an entire season of McDavid’s contract.

John Chambers

He’s probably lost McDavid’s tenure as an Oiler.
No way 97 and 29 want to stick around for this shitshow.

Pechetr

I think it is time to stop giving McDavid and Draisaitl a free pass. They are paid to score goals. Regardless of crappy goaltending, they are not currently doing so. They are part of the collective “shit show” right now.

flyfish1168

I truly hope Mikko well. But I also hope this is the last game he plays as an Oiler.

JimmyV1965

Koskinnen stops the second shot of the game on a routine shot that basically hits him in the stomach. Announcers proclaim “big save!” This is the alternate universe that is the Oilers season.

Nah man that was a snipe!

Wow. G is a problem but how can the D Zone look like that for an NHL team?

LMHF#1

Yep – and you could see it coming in weak wins before the losses.

Moonlight

Decidedly Skeptical Fan

Which is for the best.

Richard Roma

It’s almost unbelievable.

Any sane GM would have traded for one of the second tier goalies mentioned here and put Koskinen on waivers… and put Tippett out of his misery.

At this point, we should see if that potato that outdrafted the Canucks is available for GM.

Pechetr

Lots of calls for Holland to go get a goalie. You want to tell us who is the target? Its going to cost at least a 1st plus a high level prospect. Are you going to pay that for a 3 month rental in MAF, or for a “currently available” tender with term who is no better than what we have currently? Teams with good goalies are not selling them and definitely aren’t taking a 4.5 mil cap hit in return. Seriously, this team needs a .915 or above tender just to tread water. Who is your target?

Reja

Fire Holland if he doesn’t have the gumption to let Tippett go.

LMHF#1

This is extra special.

Been coming for a long time too.

Will only get worse as they continue to avoid corrective action.

fistycuff

Harsh. Not exactly sure why special teams suck so bad. But this should not be a 5-0 game. Did not feel like 5-0. 3pp goals and 2 shorties. Wow and now 6-0…
