My Dad had all kinds of unusual phrases he would use at timely moments, but when you’re a kid the phrases seem normal. Items like “burning daylight” (you’re wasting time) and “get a box” (have a place for everything and keep it there) plus “living high on the hog” (spending money you don’t have”) and “ride that nag until it drops” (his way of telling Mom we weren’t selling the car) seemed normal.
One of my least favourite phrases was “send a boy to do a man’s job” which was often followed by repeating a task that he didn’t think was done well. NHL teams can’t make players replay a shift, but they can park your ass. I think Jay Woodcroft is almost there with a few Oilers forwards, and wonder if we see a tweak tonight on the third line.

If you’re an Oilers fan, and I think over 50 percent of the people who read this blog are, then all you’re hoping for is the team ‘rides that nag until it drops’ and makes this winning streak at least four games long. This year’s Oilers serve only long winning streaks and long losing streaks, there’s no neutral ground. If you gotta serve somebody, make it the letter W.
Edmonton is a single point behind Los Angeles with two games in hand, so could be stone alone second-place in the Pacific with a win tonight. Just as important, a win tonight places the Oilers five points up on Vegas, both teams will have 11 games to play after tonight. That’s a significant gap any time in the Bettman era, especially with so few games left. That six-game run that has Colorado bookends will be the final hurdle. I have the team going 2-4-0, believe that’s reasonable.
OILERS FORWARDS FIVE-ON-FIVE PER 60 SINCE WOODCROFT ARRIVED
These are the numbers since Jay Woodcroft arrived as coach, five-on-five points-per-60. Who are your 12 forwards? The first five names for sure, Brad Malone isn’t available, but is followed by Shore, Kane, Brassard, Yamamoto, Nuge, Foegele and McLeod. Woodcroft is likely to rest Shore and play Kassian. Do you agree? Remember this is just scoring, there are more elements to the game.
LEON’S FINAL 12 GAMES
Mr. Draisaitl has 50 goals and a dozen games to go in the season. If he continues on his current pace, it’s reasonable to expect 6-8 goals over the remainder of the season (if he plays all the games). Did you know that no Oilers player has posted a season with enough goals to be inside the top-10 single season totals since 1986-87? Yeah, tough team. However, the No. 9 spot is a three way tie between Jari Kurri (1986-87) and two Glenn Anderson seasons (1983-84, 1985-86), all three seasons 54 goals. If Leon can reach or exceed, he’ll be the first make to crack the top-10 goal scorers in a single season in 36 years.
OILERS DEFENSE SINCE MANSON ARRIVED
This is sorted by goal share and shows the state of the six starters. Everyone is doing well in all categories save Evan Bouchard who has one outlier (goals-for percentage) and he’s had some tough moments. Manson keeps playing him though, and that includes 1:46 a night on the power play. Music! Play the man, that’s how he’ll get better, and of course the underlying numbers are solid to excellent so we’ll also be looking for regression.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260. We’ll preview the Oilers-Sharks game, Tyler Yaremchuk from Daily Faceoff pops by to talk about the Oilers and possible lineup changes. James Hinchcliffe is a race car driver and an ambassador for Formula E and the Canadian E Grand Prix in Vancouver on Canada Day weekend. We’ll talk about the sport and the race. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Talk soon!
I didn’t hate Snith tonight. WooHoo!!
I know this is harsh, but Kassian is useless. I literally didn’t see him make a single good play. I would rather play Shore, or anyone else.
Lots of Fair Flames Fans this season on the board. Personally, I think its just the Alberta wide love for the Sutter’s so I don’t hold it against folks.
Wonder if them Flames are starting to hear skate blades yet. I know, I know, games in hand and strength of schedule etc. But its close enough to be interesting.
About six weeks ago I said I’d rather have the Oilers stretch schedule than butter soft. Its important to have measuring sticks, a bit of adversity and teams that’ll push you. Still miles to go and nothing done yet.
Not sure I’d want to be playing the Oilers in the first round.
If the Canucks could just do us one god damn favor Id feel a lot better. That Vegas schedule is brutally soft.
Seriously any team can beat any team on any given night in this league.
Kudos to Mike Smith, he willed this team to this win. Especially fantastic results over the last 2 games. I am happy for him and it’s nice to see this team in 2nd place and within spitting distance of the Flames *spits*.
Hope his leg/knee is okay, unfortunately being much older than him, I suspect it won’t feel better in the morning ☹️.
But to quote Leon after last the game: “it’s nothing that you guys need to worry about”.
Finally, Dylan Holloway would have looked good in the game, dontchya think? For the record, I do.
He seriously needs a callup
lots of conments did not age well. this one did better:

McDavid line has been poor all night – can make up for it by playing hero late….
Re the race for the Hart Trophy:
Exhibit A = McDavid scoring a sensational OT goal while his alter ego Neon Leon takes a well deserved night off.
Hilarious but no one is mentioning McDavid’s OT goal.
It’s as if we Oiler fans simply live in this reality where our star player scores like Terminator goes clothes shopping.
It’s true. Sometimes it seems the hardest part is getting McDavid the puck while he has some room and the goal by McDavid is the easy part.
I have never seen a hockey player who was guaranteed to score like McDavid.
Mario ooh Mario.
Only with Gretzky in against the Reds!
: p
Truth 😁
Credit where due.. I’m often the first to throw Smith under the bus but he battled tonight and helped steal 2 points when the team in front just didn’t have the energy. What an assist. Wonder if he is going to be out again though- the leg is hanging by a thread it seems..
When I watched that play… In my head I was screaming Shades of Dwayne Roloson. He had that quick skate out and bat the puck up the ice.
A ‘milestone’ of sorts, Smith gets himself back over .900 on the season (.901).
And up to .908 under Woodcroft (I think that’s right?!) with these last two 1GA/30+ save performances.
This wouldn’t include the flames game:

Mike Smith is 4-0-1 in his last five starts with a .931Sv% and 2.19 GAA.
Was Oilers best player tonight.
Has your view of him changed in the past two weeks?
Was catching up to live – did Stauff say in the intermission that he’s expecting Savoie to sign after the Frozen Four this weekend?
I think Stauffer was lobbying for him to sign more than anything … didn’t get the sense that he had any inside info on the matter
Thanks.
It’s been forever since we’ve had the players and more importantly the mentality of going for it while shorthanded.
Oilers are 3GF-3GA shorthanded in their last 8 games (plus 7-0 on the PP).
That’s up there on the best 3v3 OT goals for the Oilers. Great celly between Connor and Smith. What a great finish!!
This team is gonna be the death of me, I swear… It’s not to often that we’ve played this badly and came away with two points. Tonight the hockey Gords were in our favour. I sure didn’t like our game but I’ll happily take the points and get outta dodge.
We better get our shit together and right pronto cuz we aren’t outta the woods yet. But a gifted 2 points sure helps!!!
Clear of the Kings with a game in hand.
More importantly, 5 clear of Vegas – that’s alot with 10 games left.
That was a tough game – boys didn’t have their legs and the Sharks stuck to that stifling structure very well. Never agreed with the comments such as “disinterested” and stuff like that – the Sharks were playing well, the boys were trying but couldn’t break through.
They stuck with it and finally got the one on a great play off a break.
OT, well, that was something.
Important two points – gutsy tonight.
Character building win – moral victory for San Jose.
Would love to see more of Nuge and Hyman together. They seem to have chemistry.
Agreed, I’d put McLeod or Puljujarvi with them to help with puck transport through the neutral zone.
How many games are we on the other side of these losses? Seemingly like the last 10 years straight.
Thank you hockey gods…and Mike Smith. Best player on the ice for us tonight.
Holy hell – Smith huge there. Give the old guy credit. Now pack him in ice for the night
Fun thought: was thinking “Gee tonight RNH gets HIS chance to shine”
Ryan Hot Dog Hopkins is playing the best hockey he’s played in ten years.
I always figured RNH was destined to be a 20 year man, and the new contract he’s going to repay big time over it’s term.
I always hate it when sportswriters talk like this, but I have to say: Smith really battled and fought in this game, and capped it off with an utterly brilliant pass to McDavid on the winner.
“McDavid Hot Dogging his way to the Hart trophy, makes Draisaitl redundant?”
redundant may be the wrong choice of words there…
I say a whack of people owe Mikey a huge apology.
Smith is such a ball of crazy out there … sometimes though he really comes through. He deserved the win tonight.
And TOTALLY redeem yourself!
BOOM!!! What a pass!!! lol McDavid completed the thievery of this game!!!
That’s the most eventful 30 seconds of hockey I’ve ever seen.
MVP MVP MVP
I like Mike Smith, but that’s a little over the top! 😉
what a finish. tonight we love Mike Smith
you love to see it. I have a feeling the boys get around Mike Smith hey. Like he’s such a warrior.
Well.
That was quite the end to the game!
(including the Nuge shortie here too).
Another 2 important points!
This Oilers team loves drama.
In Conner we trust with an assist by Smith. Go figure!
Smith with an amazing feed and McD finally scores on a breakaway.
McHotdog!
HOT DOG MCDAVID!
Un-freaking-believable.
Fuckin Mike Smith. LOL
Amazing!!!!
Now that’s just funny…
What a pass by Smith…. good thing they didn’t take him out, FFS.
He can now retire a legend.
Right after we win the cup.
For all our bitching here, this is one game where the Oilers have been absolutely gifted a point (or 2) by the hockey Gords. Mike Smith has some kind of forcefield spell around him because he should not be stopping pucks yet he is… even with Nurse trolling him
Nurse, you owe my wife a fancy glass…holy crap did I catch air on the dumb turnover…
Miracle point! Take it.
Huuuuge point.
HUGE.
That was a little too high event at the finish. Smith gutted it out.
Ugh – team was totally flat tonight. Very lucky to get at least a point tonight.
Damn Oilers played this game like they bet against themselves. hah
and Bouchard ices it with a tired line and 2 min left.
Get him outta there FFS…
And if *that* was all it takes to hurt him…he’s being held together with duct tape at this point…
Time to take Mike out behind the barn…..
Really?
