The Edmonton Oilers and Dallas Stars have a long history together. In 1984, when the Oilers had just moved Mark Messier to center and were mere weeks from the first Stanley in team history, the glory Oilers romped 4-0 past the Minnesota North Stars in the Campbell Conference Finals. Loved that team. Larry Melnyk came over in March, he was a champion a few weeks later.
1991, a loss to Minnesota, 1997, a win! and then losses in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. It’s a wonder the Oilers don’t make the Stars dress at the LRT station and walk to Rogers Place.
Edmonton is hoping to go deep again, it’s been five years since 2016-17. Dallas? Finals in 2020. Either of these teams could go deep or get flushed quickly. It’s an uncertain year in the NHL.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM APRIL
- At home to: STL (Expected 0-0-1) (Actual 1-0-0)
- On the road to: ANA, SJS, LAK (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 3-0-0)
- At home to: COL (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-1)
- On the road to: MIN, NAS (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 1-1-0)
- At home to: VEG, DAL, COL (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- On the road to: CBJ, PIT (Expected 1-1-0) Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: SJS, VAN (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 7-6-1, 15 points in 14 games
- Actual April results: 6-1-1, 13 points in 8 games
- Oilers in 2021-22: 44-26-6, 94 points in 76 games
It’ll long be forgotten by the fall, but in a real way Edmonton’s start to April allowed the team to rise above the rest and spend much of the home stretch above the worry. The 6-1-1 record could have been 4-3-1 (as predicted) and Edmonton’s lead would have been non-existent over the teams chasing. The magic number after last night is five. This is the good stuff.
THIS IS IT
This is it, you know. A quick exit and who knows what happens, but a strong showing in the postseason would mean progress and, perhaps as important, no need for turnover. The Oilers win a round, push deep in the second round and maybe ride a hot goalie to the final four. The recent games suggest a buy-in on what the coaching staff is saying, and the goaltending looks better than could have been hoped for based on long stretches of the season. The big item during the offseason is to return a roster that is better than the one currently playing in these games. It’s important to get better. Let me give you an example via two teams you remember. Let’s begin with the roster that met the Anaheim Ducks in Game 1, Round 2 of the 2017 playoffs:
- Patrick Maroon-Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl
- Milan Lucic-Nuge-Jordan Eberle
- Drake Caggiula-Mark Letestu-Zack Kassian
- Benoit Pouliot-David Desharnais-Anton Slepyshev
- Oscar Klefbom-Adam Larsson
- Andrej Sekera-Kris Russell
- Darnell Nurse-Matt Benning
- Cam Talbot (Laurent Brossoit)
- (Eric Gryba, Griffin Reinhart, Iiro Pakarinen, Mark Fayne, Matt Hendricks, Anton Lander, Jujhar Khaira, Jordan Oesterle, Nick Ellis, Joey Laleggia)
Talbot was brilliant, McDavid was fire and this Oilers team was very close to moving on to the third round. Flawed, young in some important spots, but there’s talent here. Move Draisaitl to center, hope Anton Slepyshev and Drake Caggiula continue to get better, and Jesse Puljujarvi jumps on to the roster and makes an immediate difference. Here’s the opening night roster following season.
- Patrick Maroon-Connor McDavid-Leon Draisaitl
- Milan Lucic-Nuge-Kailer Yamamoto
- Drake Caggiula-Ryan Strome-Jussi Jokinen
- Jujhar Khaira-Mark Letestu-Zack Kassian
- Oscar Klefbom-Adam Larsson
- Darnell Nurse-Eric Gryba
- Kris Russell-Matt Benning
- Cam Talbot (Laurent Brossoit)
- (Yohann Auvitu, Iiro Pakarinen)
The top line remains the same, Kailer Yamamoto replaces Jordan Eberle (!!!), and Jesse Puljujarvi doesn’t see the NHL until Remembrance Day. Jussi Jokinen was a free-agent signing that didn’t work out. Matt Benning was an impressive add, he had a great rookie year. Eric Gryba wasn’t what was needed, still think the Oilers should have given Yohann Auvitu a longer look. I don’t think this roster is better, and it isn’t just because Andrej Sekera is hurt. You?
CURRENT OILERS
These are the men about to enter the postseason, worries include goaltending (injury, can Smith sustain?) and five-on-five outscoring (I wrote about this at The Athletic today, seems to me Woodcroft-Manson have cured the problem but if it shows up it’ll be in the playoffs). If Tippett were still coach, I’d list him as a worry. Although his regular season coaching drove fans crazy, for me splitting up the Draisaitl line against Chicago and then benching some defensemen while stretching others to ridiculous minutes suggests Tippett wasn’t one of those “let’s stay with what got us here” fellows. Woodcroft-Manson might not be any better, the first test is to come, but based on their actions since February I’d say Edmonton fans should be heartened. Here’s what the team might look like next season.
POSSIBLE 2022-23 ROSTER
I didn’t do much here, dealt Tyson Barrie for Evander Kane replacement and signed all the RFA’s to one-year deals. Kulak for two but that isn’t important. The youngsters (Broberg, Skinner, Samorukov, Holloway) should be able to handle the jobs, and I’m not sure how well Kubalik will do the job so maybe Holloway slides in.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260, we preview the Oilers-Stars and more. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal will discuss Edmonton’s chances against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. We’ll also chat Blue Jays and Raptors. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!
Gregor saying he’s hearing playoffs will start Monday May 2.
Jay Evens now 22-8-3 (.712) as Head Coach.
Top goalies in April:
Knight FLA 5gp .957
Smith EDM 7gp .954
Talbot MIN 5gp .954
Sorokin NYI 6gp .949
Demko VCR 7gp .942
Fleury MIN 5gp .938
Other Notables:
Shesterkin .930
Kuemper .927
Binnington .912
Quick .900 !
Markstrom .895 !
Vassy .890 !
Just sayin’.
The above is at 5v5. If I switch it to all-strengths, Smith is number one with a bullet.
(minimum three games played)
On the whole season Smith is now up to .913 SV% (this is all situations).
Tied for 16th out of 60 goalies with at least 20 appearances.
What. The. Heck.
Woodcroft Era:
56 goalies with 10 or more appearances since Feb. 10th.
Smith is 5th at .924 SV% (all situations).
I hoped Smith would get healthy and be decent. I never imagined this kind of run. Hope he can keep it going.
Theodore with an unbelievable one man effort gets a huge two points for the Knights
His third OT goal of the year
Eichel so lucky there
Vegas ties it up early in the 2nd.
they tied it early in the 3rd.
and then the 3-2 lead.
now 3-3.
Also of note, it was tied up by Ovechkin, his 50th of the season – 9th time.
Score and shots dead even with a minute to play in reg
Skinner with 29 on 30 shots in a 4-1 win.
A solid performance, and an important one, as Skinner has really just been “OK” for a fairly material stretch.
Chaulk talked about some fatigue, including relating to back and forth to Edmonton (which takes a tole.)
He really hasn’t had the same defensive structure playing in front of him either, due to injuries.
#teamstat
There isn’t enough words to describe watching Big Money Jay Evens come in and make his mark the way he has.
Jay Evens, love it!
Vegas down 2-1 are like Doctor No in the James Bond movie…
Slowly sinking into certain death while trying to grab at a metal railing (with metal hands).
Of note, the 4 Condor goals have been scored on Alex Stalock (on 25 shots).
I would love to see the duo get 50/60 and get it off the bucket list
McDavid with another 3-point game⦠leads the league in scoring. 113 pts, 2 more than Huberdeau (and 13 more goals too).
What a season!
funny, I haven’t seen any update from HH about this… that’s really strange π
I was born in 1992. I can’t remember not being an Oilers fan. I swear it felt like we lost to Dallas every year for the first 13 years of my life.
That one felt good. Especially the Bennching.

So DeBoer watched Lehner give up those 2 goals in the 3rd vs NJ, laid the blame at Lehner’s feet after the game, said himself Thompson is the only consistent goalie.
Then he somehow decided to start Lehner.
Then decided to pull Lehner for Thompson in a 1-1 game.
Unbelievable.
Dead coach walking… we’ve seen this play before
Coach is out of answers.
Vegas traded the wrong Goalie now theyβre stuck with a high maintenance player for 3 more years.
That’s as bad as it gets. Yikes.

For dmen with at least 1000 min 5×5 TOI, Evan Bouchard now sits 9th in the league with 1.42 5×5 points per 60.
You forgot to mention how slow and inferior Bouchard is, compared to HH’s select defencemen .
When he works the last few wrinkles out heβll be a SCK
Big gym summer and a maturity step coming
I hope not. Let him grow naturally. Luke Schenn went from super young player to plug after a summer spent “bulking up”.
All of this and he’s not even an NHL defensemen yet!?! Just wait for that matriculating development to start showing it’s head!
I definitely go with Mikko next game – fact that its against Colorado and Smith is the clear #1 at this point, does not change that for me – its time for a game off for Smith (even with the 3-day break) and time to get Mikko some net.
Iβd love to see them get mikko jacked up with the rest of the team
Mikko tied Colorado last time out. Give him another shot at them.
Thank god Woody and the Man arenβt counted against some sort of salary cap. Hate to wait until they win the cup to re-sign them. Hurry up and #extendthewood.
I have little doubt that Holland has spoke to Jay and they have an agreement that he is coming back – they’ll speak in the spring and hammer out the details.
Ya, his success is likely pocketing him a bit more cash but, at the end of the day, we are talking about a rookie coach with like half a season – he’s not going to be getting anywhere near $3M.
Keith was on the ice for the empty netter so, in addition to 4-0 goals at 5 on 5, he was traditional +5 on the night.
Made up for the Minnesota game.
Oilers goal differential +32
Kings goal differential -3
Anything can happen in a playoff series but the Oilers have proven to be the better team this regular season.
If we continue this style of play, I have a lot of confidence in our chances. THIS team can play playoff hockey and Win!
Is that woody 32 or season? If woody thatβs stellar
It’s all Woody and then some.
+29 overall, +35 under Woodcroft (in 33 games).
Crazy.
That’s full season but its the NHL.com total so would include shootout wins as a goal and shootout losses as a goal against – I believe.
Seeing the highlights. Lovely snipe by Eberle, his 19th. Hope he can get to 20 for the 8th time this year.
Oh my god, he has 159 goals?!
π
Attn fellow Lowetidians and esteemed company, I need your help. So I have this pair of oiler socks (it gets better donβt worry).. Iβm a shift worker, and end up working during lots of games. A jersey and hat is unfortunately not possible on many game days. But I do have this old pair of oiler socks Iβve had for a few years now. I started wearing them for fun at work. Was doing the math with a friend of mine and my socks are 19-2-1 this year. The problem is thisβ¦ I only have one pair. Now, do I go to sportcheck and buy a three pack of socks so I have a proper rotation in playoffs? Or do I keep to a single pair and give them the ol whores bath in the sink every other night? And before you suggest it, not washing them is not possible. We wear heavy boots at work and not washing is no bueno for all involved. Thank you for your consideration!
-DM
Just spray a washable adhesive over your feet and consider the socks part of your DNA now.
I would absolutely wash them every second day, bro. Gotta play the percentages, yannoβ¦why take the chance?
If you donβt wear *those* socks and the Oilers donβt win the Cup, Iβm blaming youβ¦.and your trench foot.
Gotta wash them in the sink. Please, sorry, and thank you.
Buy the 3 pack and give your friend the three pack to wear.
DO NOT sub out your lucky socks for the new ones.
Unless you take your boots off at work, no one is going to notice what you do.
Have worn work boots at work, and never took them off even once. That’s for when you return home.
No need to thank me.
Iβm loving the replies, and you have all sold me.. one pair of socks it is.
Donβt wash off that good luck! No washing! No duplicates!
How about I only wash the socks after a loss? Seems fair for all involved, including my co-workers
Had company so couldnβt really add my two cents but watched every second of the game.
Man, am I ever loving our team right now. I absolutely love how they are All playing a team defensive game!!! It has been out Achilles Heel for ages and I was wondering if we were ever going to figure it out! I really thought Tippet, who was a defensive minded coach, was going to be the answer but, for whatever reason, it never happened.
Amazingly, ManWood shows up and BOOM!!! We are suddenly a five man unit on the ice!!! On Both Sides Of The Rink!!!
I canβt even put into words how happy I am to finally, Finally see our Team play this style.
Bring on the playoffsβ¦the wait is killing meβ¦
Eichel making Buffalo fans happy, as his team is down 2-1
Oilers really starting to dominate their games.
Stars are really good, and look at Nurse sending Stars captain into orbit.
BEAUTIFUL STUFF.
They’re -9 on the year. Theyβve won 26 games by 1 goal. Theyβre 77 games into the season and Iβm not sure what they are. Iβm not sure they make the playoffs next year unless they add.
What to expect when you’re expecting playoffs…
At home to: VEG, DAL, COL (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 2-0-0)
Another nice game by Smith too. So Mikko starts Friday?
I hope Mikko gets a couple of game to spell Mike. Heβs gotta stay healthy as long as possible if we are gonna give this a run.
Koskinen is due a game.
Smith is due a rest.
The Oilers have effectively clinched.
Koskinen was great against the Avs last time out in any case.
I’d be surprised to see Smith.
As soon as I click to the Vegas game Ovechkin scores. Good night, and hopefully goodnight.
Man, such a nice game, again.
Totally convincing wins over Nashville, Vegas and Dallas.
Big win
This is a pretty good team
Good. make it hurt even more
Shot 50.
Another McDavid point.
Seals the win (already sealed).
What an impressive game!
Called it
Pretty fluffy one timer Pavelsky
Drai toMcD for the empty netter, watch TO and the Phlegms whine
Woody: i think we could take more in close shots and really press more to pressure the goalie.
Foegele: And i took that personally
Beautiful dish fro Griffith to Brosseau on a 2 on 1 for a 4-1 Condors’ lead.
Well played game.
Nice trade for Wedgewood for a conditional 4rth in 2023. (Itβs a third if they make the playoffs)
Still that was a good price considering the market.
That was a big time PK btw.
I want 50 shots.
that doesn’t look like an issue lol
no shot in three minutes… maybe I spoke too early.
There it is and how sweet!
No dice
I honestly don’t get the love for Kane. He’s a terrible passer. Takes dumb penalties.
Every player has flaws.
Oilers have generally been too soft with a tendency to over pass.
That isn’t Kane.
He scores, hits, fights and worries the opposition.
Kind of like Kassian, but with goal scoring talent.
Not at all like Kassian. John Tonelli is a good comparable for Kane on the ice.
The guy’s scored at an 82GP 33-30-63 rate over the last 5 seasons (never mind the physical element). What on earth were you hoping for?
This is a joke, right?
Dead serious in my unpopular take.
Great great kill
textbook kill
That was not an inconsequential kill……….
Well, that is a consistent call on Hyman. He definitely got his stick up into the hands.
Looked below both of his hands to me
Wow, a play that is allowed all game. Game management in full gear
Of course that’s what finally gets called…
Nurse deserves a raise.
I think he may be getting one…..
Waiting on speeds to confirm.
Give him 2 then.
McDavid’s in-your-face reaction to Benn is gold!
Jesse loves it π
(Benn into the bench)
Mcdavid loves it, looks like a puppy getting a treat
