How many Oilers forwards would you consider productive offensively? What is your line in the sand for a productive NHL player? I always used 2.00 points-per-60 for top line, 1.75-2.00 for second and then anything over 1.50 for third line as good production. How many productive offensive forwards does Edmonton have on the roster as we close in on the postseason?

Do you remember that six-game ‘two weeks of hell’ that we discussed? Do you remember I suggested 2-4-0 would be a solid run? Entering the final game, the Oilers are 3-1-1. This month might be the most enjoyable Oilers experience since the 2006 playoff run.
OILERS FORWARDS, FIVE-ON-FIVE POINTS-60
I think we can call Draisaitl, McDavid and Hyman productive this season on skill lines, Derek Ryan has scored well on depth lines. Evander Kane has played half a season, and his 1.78 points-per-60 is good, and Jesse Puljujarvi is also in the range. Are there five skill forwards delivering among Edmonton’s top-six forwards?
This is an interesting chart, we’re basically through the season and can see what has gotten better, remained the same and is so good it’s frightening. The most revealing item for me? All forwards but Zack Kassian are around .5 goals-per-60 or better, and there are three men over a goal per 60 at five-on-five. That’s balance. Now, I’m not going to show the balance photo again, some of you were so upset about the experience I’ve decided to retire the phrase. That said, you can see nine men who are producing some kind of goal-scoring over the long season. Let’s check on outscoring (goal differential five-on-five) to see who shines like a diamond:
Jesse Puljujarvi delivered a tremendous season of outscoring, and those who understand the importance of this statistic know it’s really really real. Did JP benefit from playing with Connor McDavid? Of course. The thing is, and that trips people up very often, Puljujarvi helps the captain outscore and therefore has tremendous value. In 2018-19, McDavid’s most common right-wing was Kassian, and the captain’s five-on-five goal differential was 50.66 percent (Kassian 45.6 percent).
The combination I worry about right now is Leon Draisaitl-Kailer Yamamoto. Since Jay Woodcroft took over, the two men have played 230 minutes together, outscoring opponents 10-6. However, the shot differential (45.83 percent) is a concern. Zach Hyman with Draisaitl have played together 278 minutes, have outscored opponents 17-15 and have a 50.92 shot share. Something to keep in mind as we enter the playoffs.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260, we have a busy show and some major subjects to discuss. Steve Lansky pops in at 10:20, we’ll talk Guy Lafleur’s passing, the Oilers and junior hockey playoffs. Chris Johnston, TSN Insider, will chat about the Oilers-Kings and what we might see, plus some recent blowouts across the NHL and what they might mean in the postseason. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Friday!!
So the refs hand the Orchids six PP oppos and they can’t do anything with em? Man what’s gonna happen to them when the whistles get put away in the playoffs and Heavy Hockey starts being played?
MacKinnon yelling at his teammates again? For a guy who’s trophy case might have maxed out in his rookie year (and who isn’t even the captain of his team…) he sure gives it to his teammates a lot. Weird leadership style.
The Oilers – a team of wannabes, with a GM that doesn’t understand analytics, an Old Fogey of a Goalie, an overpaid bum in Keith on the point and No Cale Makar on their team clinches against them? Weird.
Anyone else see the Dubas Analytics Machine get tuned up by Heavy Hockey last night?
It’s all about Peaking!
This is all so much fun!
But MacKinnon lets some of his teammates use his various hired personal professionals like his trainer.
With Kane on a 40+ goal pace/82 and McDrai comfortably within the top 10 in goals, you have to go back to 82-83, 83-84, and the 85-86 teams to find instances where the Oilers had three players who were top 10 in goals scored.
Pretty stunning achievement, particularly factoring in number of teams, parity, overall increased talent level, etc.
Overall, its a good end to the season. No matter the playoffs, we have 2 extra ordinary players.
5!!
Last 4 games, at 5 on 5:
Bouch 9-0 goals
Keith 7-0 goals
That was a tremendous pass by Keith to Kane for the latter’s second goal. Kane said it, too!
And rewarded by Manwood.
Keith led the D in AS TOI
Boosh led in 5v5.
Just an AWFUL defensive zone turnover by the Tuscon player and Griffith with a great look to set up Cracknell for the empty-net one-timer.
5-0.
Woody:
–5 on 3 was the most critical moment of thegame.
–Kane was a physical presence today. Addded an emotional attachment tot he game that got everyone into it.
–Knows nothing about Nurse. (as I said he would say earlier)
–Great improvement to battles and physicality over the weeks, Players a re laying it on the line.
Asked about the “relentless” nature of his team I commented on earlier.
–Yeah, we’re playing hard. All over the ice, lots of commitment.
“I haven’t even looked at the video yet, I just know he wasn’t available to us – we’ll have alot more info in the morning.” – Woody on Nurse.
Summarizing!
Tonight featured the first episode of a new show called “Welcome Back, Wanner”. Maximus might not crack wise like Gabe Kaplan, but he does show some sick mitts with this beaut:
https://mobile.twitter.com/MJWARRIORS/status/1517689385537482752?cxt=HHwWgMC9hZCd9Y8qAAAA
He also added an assist as Moose Juice won Game 1.
Tullio and Chiasson were held pointless as their teams lost their respective Game 1’s.
Lachance was also held off the scoresheet.
What a beauty. I Wanner see more.
Condors with another solid PK (3 for 3) and then break out on the 3 on 3 ……. the d-men give oodles of gap so Griffith walks in, cuts to the middle and wrists one home from the top of the circles.
4-0 Condors.
Woodcroft now 28-8-3
Outstanding.
We’re Going To The Playoffs!!!
👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
What a statement game! Giving the league notice that THIS TEAM is gonna be a wrecking crew in the post season!!!
Smith was outstanding. Kane was amazing! McDavid is madness!
The most amazing thing to me is the confidence and composure our team has now. There was no panic in anyone, even after the Avs scored the third goal. We know how to play these games now.
We Are For Real!!!
Bring on the Playoffs!!!
We’re going streakin!!!
Playoffs… with fans.
Thank the heavens.
Never in doubt tonight. The socks are on, and I’m in such a good mood I volunteered to take an extra 2 hours of OT tonight. Flags go on tomorrow when I wake up. Merry Clinchmas!!!!
Santa was good to us tonight, in his offseason no less!
With the scoring race tied with 5 games to go I reckoned McDavid would score 2 points a game and win the Art Ross Trophy in a canter.
I was wrong. He is scoring 3 points a game.
and the Wings held Huburdeau to 2 points last night (I said prior to the game, less than 3 would be “a win”).
I think Minnesota is the only team that scares the shit out of me. Every other team I think the Oilers have a good chance against.
Yes, I agree and think they could come out of the central.
They have to make it past St. Louis first.
And they also need to beat Colorado (or whichever team plays them in the unlikely chance Colorado loses in round 1)
if we do end up playing Minny, the oilers will have made the conference finals.
Smart move by Woody to not take anything for granted and started Smith who played in tip top form.
I also think it had plenty to do with wanting to rest Smith by not playing on Sunday at 1pm (eastern) after a long travel day tomorrow and losing 2 hours on the clock.
Woody went with his starter in a statement game he wanted the points now. Woody knows a 4 game losing streak can start at anytime. I believe we only need 1 more win for home ice against L.A and Woody probably feels it’s safe enough to start Mikko in Ohio.
I believe we both can have our speculations on “why” Woody is choosing to run his goalies as he has been.
One thing we know with certainty is that Woody buts a HUGE emphasis on rest and recover and “travelling right” and not overtaxing his players physically or mentally with drills or too much information in meetings, etc.
I’m confident he’s looking at the schedule ahead and travel, etc. when determining a path for his goalies.
Got to maintain the focus. CLB and PIT next up…
Hip flexor for Nurse Bob is hearing
Is that good news?
I’m waiting for Woody to speak live.
He’s not going to say anything
If it’s a hip flexor strain it depends on the severity. Treatment and rest are what’s needed.
HH will soon appear, explaining how his fave jackoff team didn’t really lose.
I’m wondering where that angry Spanish truth guy is who wants to fire Holland at every turn.
Mike Smith is not a goalie.
I think Kuemper had an off night tonight but the team played remarkably. Definitely showed they can go toe-to-toe with some of the league’s top teams.
Evander Kane may be timing the ascendency part of the Streaky Scorer periodicity. And not much more superlatives to add about Smith’s form at the moment.
He didn’t have an off-game in the 1st – the Oilers came in waves for parts of this game and he eventually gave in.
Stauffer wondering if Oil will sign Desharnais to a contract if Nurse is out for CBJ.
Doesn’t think they would call up Bro with him being out so long.
I agree on Broberg – tonight was his first game back.
Niemelainen hurt (again)
Samorukov hurt (again)
Kemp hurt (again) and not ready
Kesselring not ready
Griffith with the transition to Marody, great zone entry, finds Kaldis who sees Hamblin streaking back-door.
3-0 Condors at 2nd intermission.
MacKinnon seemed to be frustrated towards his bench at the end there.
I saw that as well.
Temper tantrum he doesn’t like to lose. Woody needs to exploit this if we end up playing them.
Canadian broadcasters are an embarrassment. If this was the MLB, NFL or NBA we would have seen the entirety of the exchange multiple times. Rogers paid the league $5 billion for broadcasting rights. They owe the league nothing.
You don’t want to suggest the officials prefer a team, but man, does Colorado get every possible call and as much game management as they need. Yikes.
For 5 years running
That was GREAT 👍.
Kane does very little to have the refs call an infraction on him. It’s a shame how some players can get away with so much. krachuck is an example of someone that gets away with too much.
if you’re Holland and Nicholson you’re taking that no-call footage of McDavid being slashed on a breakaway to your contacts in the League exec office and quietly asking for a please explain. That sort of bullshit needs to go before playoffs.
Jay Evens has saved everything.
Not sure if I could like Woodcroft any more than I already do. So humble.
He has attributes that make him elite, unlike the usual dinosaur ego driven tools Oilers have suffered with.
Woody has saved the team from Babcock.
What a great game. Other than refs trying to keep them in the game and the bad 3-1 this was a near perfect game played. Stuffed the Avs and beat them up physically
if Paper tigers can’t get more physical they are gonna be in trouble
Oilers doubled up on the Avs and then some in the hit department.
Avs – with players like Kadri are “fake tough”.
Oilers – with players like Nurse, Kane and Kassian are tough.
Kadri is a pest and he does it well. I wish we had one.
In the playoffs Kadri is a selfish idiot that keeps getting suspended.
One of the best La Bambas of the season.
I guess the Av’s needed a little more help.
The refs did all they could.
What a 7 game run to clinch playoffs. .785 against the ~ soft parade ~: Kings, Avs, Wild, Preds, Knights, Stars. Avs .
4-1-1 as we exit Death Valley and nuthin’ but blacktop between us and the playoffs
woot!!!
Well, Drai didn’t get the goal, but still got a point!
OILERS PLAYOFFS BOUND!
I prefer we score last in wins
Oilers D 5 points
Colorado D 2 points
HH’s vaunted D Corp. He must feel shame. Actually no …. He will move to the vaunted Calgary d. ….. or Carolina .. or Nashville …. Or whoever is winning 🏆
BOOM!!! Russel the snipe!!! lol We’re going to the Playoffs, Baby!!!
What is that, 5 points for Russel in the last 4 games? Or 6 points??
Great for the team to clinch with a win over the Avs!!!
Geez Russel on fire
Kowboy rides again
Crusty, screw you Mudslides
Kowboy with his best Wyatt Earp impression…
Kris Russell. Sharp shootin cowboy.
Cowboy drives the last spike!
Surprised we didn’t end up with the extra penalty there.
Woodcroft! Tell Kassian to kick someone’s ass already. He can take a suspension…
No mercy Bouchard!
It’s almost playoff time.
.
Refs really trying to help the Avs.
1/2 of their shots on pp
Merry ClincHHmas ya filthy animal
Beautiful.
Smith is so sharp right now. I can’t believe he’s the same guy from his wonky stretch.
