The Edmonton Oilers play a big game tonight. A win, and things are back to even. A loss? Well, tomorrow’s post will have at least a hint of summer, but you could also feel a draft. We’ll call it “cloudy with a good chance of offseason discussions” to take our minds off the liquid drano.
Oilers off-seasons are often ponderous, but I don’t see that happening this summer no matter how long the playoffs linger. I don’t think things will be the same after this year, there’s no going back. Jay Woodcroft is progress, these five rookies are progress, surely an analytics department can’t be too far away? Anything but ponderous. It’s been 15 years.

THE FIVE ROOKIES
Maybe people don’t even think about the 2021-22 rookies, since so many of them are currently injured or in Bakersfield. Edmonton’s NHL rookies this season are:
- LC Ryan McLeod, who looks like he’ll be an NHL regular for years.
- G Stuart Skinner, building a strong case to be on an NHL roster this fall.
- LD Philip Broberg, speed/size and he’s adapted quickly to North America.
- LD Markus Niemelainen, hits like a truck and has more mobility than expected.
- LD Dmitri Samorukov, rugged defenseman who plays with an edge.
This is a strong crop of rookies. The boxcars aren’t there, this isn’t a group who delivered as rookies, but they showed their skills in the AHL and NHL this season. There’s some impressive futures there. Edmonton didn’t invest NHL time on the defensemen, because they weren’t completely ready, but you can see it coming. Do you remember the quote I used to use from Punch Imlach in his book Hockey is a Battle from time to time?
“I moved in a lot of guys, especially on defence. I knew I was going to give Mike Pelyk a lot of work, Jim Dorey was a real tough egg from Tulsa and he was going to get a shot at it. Another tough guy was Pat Quinn, and a real surprise in camp was Rickey Ley, a junior from Niagra Falls with no pro experience. So we had all those guys, plus Tim Horton, Marcel Pronovost and Pierre Pilote. I knew that with all these young guys there were going to be mistakes. They were going to cost us goals. But I was going to have a team that would try and would play entertaining hockey. I knew we would be life and death to make the playoffs.”
Edmonton didn’t invest NHL time in these men, and that was the wise choice. That said, if Broberg gets 40 games next season, Samorukov somewhere close (he is waiver eligible) and Niemelainen is first recall, that’s some fine talent pushing up behind Evan Bouchard, who played his first full-time role this season. What does that mean for summer? Maybe we get to that subject tomorrow.
THE CONDORS
What a win last night in Bakersfield. The lead story among players remains Dylan Holloway, who I swear gets chances at Taylor Hall volume but cashes at Todd Marchant rates. He had five shots last night, maybe six or seven 10-bell looks, and came out with an assist. Edmonton has never produced a Calder Trophy winner, but I’m telling you Holloway could be a strong contender next season in the right situation.
JESSE
I’ve been surprised in the last 24 hours by the number of people who have thrown haymakers at Jesse Puljujarvi without also acknowledging that he’s clearly not 100 percent. Teams don’t reveal Jack Diddly about injuries, but if you use the brain God gave you, it’s clear something isn’t right. I’m worried it’s the hips again, wouldn’t it be the most JP thing if he actually had tragically hips? I hope not. Anyway, if you hear someone pointing out Jesse’s performance on Monday without mentioning his clear issue with getting around in a normal way, know this: They’ve missed a major point, and might be missing other things, too. Just slamming a guy is being a bully. That’s not fair.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260, we gear up for the big game between the Oilers and Kings, plus Jays and Elks draft. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal will pop by to talk about the game, and offer an historical perspective on these two teams. We’ll also get updates from the rink, and have a blast! 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!
I was screaming “just call a timeout!” At a listless PP in 2nd period. The game was just clearly sinking away well before end. Was praying something really unorthodox might just lift cursed fog that seemed present.
What a nice and convincing win.
Someone mentioned the monkey off Smith’s back. It was every bit as much a monkey off the teams back IMO. They’d lost 7 straight playoff games over 3 seasons entering last night.
Great to see them calm the nerves, get back to their system and dominate the game to even the series.
Really nice effort, now do it again!
Oilers at 5 on5 tonight by period:
CF%
65.71%
63.16%
50%
SCF%

64.71%

Sheesh. 😛
Proper drunk now.
GOILERS!
It’s not your fault
GOILERS!
That… was the vaunt.
My Woodcroft is satisfying to listen to post game
He sure is.
So, about the Oilers not being able to play that “playoff style”:

LA going home with a split is a positive for them, doesn’t matter the score tonight. But Edmonton’s physicality in Game 2 might need to be addressed next game, if you’re LA. Game 3 comes Friday.
This is honestly the first time I’ve seen them play playoff hockey since game 6 against the Ducks. They really brought it tonight. I hardly recognized them at first.
Kahun, Haas, Ennis, Nygard, Chiasson, Neal
replaced with
Kane, Foegele, Hyman
Add McDavid being MUCH more physical and McLeod willing to a greater extent
Chiarelli nearly sewered the McDeity Dynasty. Set them back years regardless.
Apparently Erickson Ek and Carlo were the targets at the picks held. The scouts nailed it in 2015.
But fuck it we have McDrai.
Best 1-2 since Gretzky Messier.
Or ever?
Fuck the Kings.
GOILERS.
Bouch and Keith led the team in total TOI: 21:03 and 20:27, respectively.
Noone else over 20 minutes.
Nurse at 18:57 and, get this:
McDavid at: 16:52
Drai at 15:10
Money.
Yes, great in-game deployment by Manwood. At 4+ goal lead, run the grinders.
I can’t remember a playoffs I felt better about since Bob Cole said Messier turns on try he jets in last cup run.
What a game.
They play like that, they can play with anyone.
It’s Cup time.
It is.
Fuck it.
The good guys didn’t just beat them, they beat them up. Hot dang that was satisfying to watch. This team finally understands how to play in the playoffs.
Couple breaks but they took full advantage. Step #1. Be there.
What a complete game.
It really was a complete game. Oilers dominated the first at 5 on 5 (82% expected goals) – it was only the 2 PPs where the Kings got some chances and momentum.
The analytics support the eye-test. It’s all in the black today.
Oilers have scored 6 goals in a row. I’ll be nervous until the score their 7th straight to start next game. Crazy
The Oilers top pairing of Keith-Bouchard looking excellent so far this series. Just a couple of older gentlemen playing big brain hockey together.
The old man and the man that looks old.
Keith doesn’t really look that old.
Kassian played just under 8 minutes with an 88% expected goal share.
Archie with a 61% expected goal share.
5 hits for Archie. 6 for Kass.
That cowbell is a catchy instrument.
Music!
Rookie coach mistake dressing Archie
The honeymoon is over.
Beat them in the alley.
This is the way.
Great response from Woodcroft’s troops. No better way to silence the critics than a convincing win. Well deserved.
That was a clinic. We’re ready to play, now. This was just the first beat down. More on the way!
GO OILERS!!!
Well that was nice.
YES
I wonder if Cassandra hates Mike Smith shutouts? I didn’t see that on his list…
It was luck.
Cassy is a dude?
Love that last 25 seconds.
Kings conceded the game.
Cowardly.
They’re done.
Especially faking the breakout
Smith gets the Gorilla off his back and snaps a 10 game playoff losing streak. We also have our secret weapon Big Ben in the L.A house for games 3 and 4.
i like using Darnell on this PP
K Jay. Throw the big boys over the boards now. No late liberties.
and now they are starting PP 2.5 (Foegle and Kass)
Yep the you wanna play tough guy?
Answer: no you win this best we’re just bitches.
Crowd should be standing after this performance.
There we go
Absolutely the right play by Ryan
Refs trying to spot the Kings a goal.
The dreaded 6-0 lead with 6 minutes to go in the final period.
Well I do remember Oilers once blew a 5-0 lead to the Kings but think we are safe with 6!!!!!!
I’ve never heard of a dreaded 6-0 lead with 2 minutes remaining in a game.
Most dangerous lead in hockey.
Is the sky no longer falling?
Does anybody know where the rope ladder is to climb back up to the ledge. My friend seems to have fallen off.
I think he was muttering something about playoff sweeps being worse than the DoD on the way down.
Seriously though, the Oilers are finally playing filthy in the playoffs. Love it!
We want a touchdown! LOVING this game, great response to the first game.
They have a touchdown.
What you want is the convert. 😉
Not sure embarrassing them is the best idea. Last few times the oilers did that, other team played the next game hard and their goalies played lights out.
They started PP2, they are rolling lines. What else should they do if they are just that much better?
Ducks Gm 7
Oilers really missing Kahun tonight…
Fucking hammer that Iafallo
All goals up high on Quick in the series.
Won’t score on him unless it’s top half
how tall is Peterson?
Don’t think they’ll see him
Well I hope they do, say 12 minutes into the next game!
For all the talk of Kane being a “sniper”, I think that was his first goal from distance (at least that I can remember).
BOOM!!!! Kaner with a lazer!!! Quick is toast!!!
Shoot first mentality.
And workman like.
Drink!
Snipe
What a PP shift by Kane – my goodness.
Good smart shift from the lunchpail 4th draws a penalty. Foggy dragged down net-side.
Atta-boy Woody 2nd unit.
Can u imagine the roar of the crowd if Kass scores?
Does Woody start PP1 with a 5-goal lead?
Nope…
The guys aren’t pushing as hard, preferring to hang back and it’s giving the kings some chances.
I don’t like it. We gotta keep hammering these guys! Don’t give them a sliver of confidence!!!
A Smith ‘you know what’ (no jinx here) would be a tough pill to swallow for all the haters.
I presume they would be happy……
Hate doesn’t work that way.
I don’t like the guy, and do think he has an ego (and then some) but credit to him for owning the debacle last game. And I am certainly happy for him to have gotten the shutout tonight. So I guess I don’t qualify as a hater. Which I don’t want to be.
It’s entertainment. You’re allowed to pick your heroes and villains.
I was highly skeptical of the Kane acquisition now I freaking love the guy. Life is funny.
Honest query: did you not think he’d be a good fit on the ice?
Difficult to prognosticate. He’d had a long layoff and finding chemistry with McDavid was not a guarantee.
Credit to the player. He came in with the right attitude and is making the most of his opportunity. I hope they go on an extended run that really entices him to stay for another season or two.
A year or two would be great. Three years would be “OK”. 4 or more is trouble. He’s turning 31.
Yup and that’s where Holland’s biggest blind spots (older players and contract negotiations) become a worry. Ken has to be willing to walk away if the term becomes too punitive.
Condors hold on for the 3-2 win and take a 2-0 lead in the best of 5.
What a pair of games considering the Canucks got 6 assignments from the NHL.
no game tomorrow OP. lol.
that was a best of 3.
Oh, yes, that’s right – thank you.
Off to the second round!
Ref almost got one! Mike nearly killed himself trying to get back in! lol
Wonder is the would’ve counted?
Sure would have.
Off of the official?
Yes, I believe so – could be wrong but I think so.
Tim Peel had one go in off the groin area and it was called back a few years ago. It’s a weird almost never seen exception to the
official is live rule.
Had to channel my inner McCurdy for that one:)
Doesn’t count if it goes in directly off the referee.
The Kings are Duck hunting.
I missed the Canucks tie it up but a massive offensive zone shift, in particular by Esposito, winning 3 board battles, circles back to point with the puck, puts a week shot on net which NHLer Martin misplays and Marody bangs home the rebound for the 3-2 lead with 1:20 to go.
Crowd singing like they’re at a footie match
Crowd likely liquored up like a footie match
Lol – you guys have never been to match over in the UK … that’s not sugar they’re snorting off the toilet seats! Canadian fans are much tamer by comparison to Euro football fans
Count sighting
Took for granted OP’s Bakersfield updates, does anyone have eyes on the other game? Saw Philp has an assist after ‘replacing’ an injured Benson.
I’ve posted a few updates on it including a description of the Philp assist (which was a wonderful play by him).
