A giant walks among us. Connor McDavid’s post-game interview with Scott Oake included 97 saying “I’m just part of the team” and it was unbelievable, but a different kind of mind blowing unbelievable than the events witnessed by Oilers nation on the ice last night. McDavid’s 1-1-2 line included six shots, three HDSC, two takeaways and miles and miles of miles and miles traveled at supersonic speed. That’s one of the greatest individual performances I’ve ever seen. I’d find the date of the last game where the captain did the impossible, except I know it was Game 6 against the Kings. In your life have you seen such a player?

GOALTENDER
Mike Smith stopped 29 shots, including six HDSC. For the series, he finished with a .937 save percentage. That’s No. 5 among goalies with three or more appearances this postseason. Smith entered April in need of redemption, and I believe he’s earned it. Ken Holland’s bet, a miserable one for most of the season, now looks like either a stroke of genius or cashing in on the luck of a lifetime. Either way, Edmonton is on to the second round for the first time since 2017.
DEFENSE
Darnell Nurse made a big shot block early in the game, he would have four on the night (and Edmonton 26). He played 20:34, all at even strength, three shots. The duo faced the Kopitar (Kempe-Kaliyev) line 14 minutes, winning the shot (12-10) and goal (1-0) share. Cody Ceci scored the winning goal, three shots, GV-TK, three blocked shots. The goal was a monster, Ceci a major addition. This pairing went 9-4 five-on-five goals during the series.
Duncan Keith and Evan Bouchard went to hell and back during this series (2-7 goals five-on-five) but last night’s results were solid. Keith had one shot on goal, created a rebound, had a giveaway and four shot blocks. This pairing was handed the Danault line (Grundstom, Moore), who were 4-1 at five-on-five during the series (Danault-Moore were 7-2). On this night, Edmonton won the shot share 7-5 and were 2-3 HDSC at five-on-five. For this pairing, an excellent game and some redemption. Bouchard had 10 shot attempts, none landed, but he was fantastic to my eye. One HDSC, drew a penalty, was effective in all areas and his passing is sublime.
Brett Kulak had an assist, four blocked shots, a giveaway and two takeaways. New Dad skated well and played well positionally. Tyson Barrie had another solid game, three shots on goal, placed pucks in good places. Kris Russell played 8:44 and blocked three shots.
FORWARDS
Connor McDavid had as dominant a game as you’ll ever see, a searing display of hockey talent that will live for the ages. For him to deliver that kind of performance on demand is special, it was transcendent. His shifts last night featured LA Kings holding on for dear life, his goal something out of The Matrix. Someday, people will refer to the greatest goals in the game as “approaching McDavidian” these are the best goals ever made. Leon Draisaitl was described by 97 as “a beast” and that’s a fair description, as long as the beast comes equipped with soft hands and a giant brain built for creativity. It was a different kind of performance due to injury, but awesome in a unique way. He picked up an assist, won nine of 19 in the dot (Edmonton was getting caved so 29 joined in after playing wing early), one HDSC and one TK. His health will be a developing story over the next few days. Kailer Yamamoto picked up an assist, two shots, three HDSC, two takeaways and two blocked shots. Playing in the presence of brilliance, it might be easy to overlook an impact performance, but it was there from No. 56. Lovely pass on the 97 goal.
Derek Ryan had a GV, TK, won five of 11 in the circle, and played an intelligent game over 200 feet. He was on for 10 defensive-zone faceoffs. Josh Archibald had a heart attack breakaway but couldn’t cash, two shots, six hits and a blocked shot. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins filled in every column in the game summary save goals and assists. He had one shot, a GV-TK, and did his best ‘bend don’t break’ work over 60 minutes.
Jesse Puljujarvi is skating with power again, that could be a key addition for the next series. He had one shot on goal, two hits. Ryan McLeod had one shot, two giveaways and FIVE takeaways on a night I thought he stepped up when the team needed him. Zack Kassian had three shots, seven hits and a takeaway, plus a high danger scoring chance. Just when I had calmed down about Kassian’s reckless hits, I read Travis Yost saying something like “he’s a penalty waiting to happen” and that’s about right. His presence in the Calgary series could be a big story.
Zach Hyman had five shots, two HDSC, a TK and three hits. He didn’t score but was a worry for LAK in what was a strong series for the winger. Evander Kane had five shots, four HDSC and cemented himself as a memorable figure in this year’s playoffs. His scoring line through the first round (7 goals, 9 points in 7 games) has him in a tie for No. 5 in league scoring. He would be in the early Conn Smythe conversation, but Connor McDavid leads the league with 14 points. One for the ages, ladies and men.
CALGARY OR DALLAS?
It has to be Calgary. If we’re in Revelations, and that seems obvious, then the obstacles are all death or glory. I can’t wait either way. Last night was one of the best hockey games I’ve ever seen, can’t wait for the next one. Connor McDavid is a full force gale.
So at this point, the oilers will be the underdog in every Series going forward. No real upsets occurred in the first round.
was really hoping Dallas would pull it off, but it just wasn’t in the cards.
This next series will be brutal. Players are gonna get injured for sure.
Key will be for the team to control their emotions. The fans sure as hell won’t be able to.
I’m already upset.
I know right? Don’t know if I’ll be able to handle watching them lose to frickin Calgary. Probably be depressed for weeks.
lets hope it don’t come to that and our boys crush those bastards!
GOG!
Well my blood pressure just shot through the roof. Preparing for a big exam, I just don’t need this shit right now!
So it’s glory or grief. No in between. This is the way…
Haha same here, I will actually have to watch the first 2 games 1 or 2 days late as a result. Not sure how I’m going to stay off here tho.
Battle of Alberta. As it should be. This will be an epic test and, if our boys succeed, will make that success all the more meaningful. Bring it on…pour it on!!
So the Oilers will be playing a considerably better team than the one that took them to seven games in the first round. But the Flames will also be playing a considerably better team than the one that took them to seven games in the first round.
By the transitive property, I am very confused.
That performance by Ottenger is the the best I’ve ever seen by a goaltender…and I’m old.
Wow!
I’ve heard the [insert non-Oilers team here] have a prospect in their system who’ll be able to wipe the floor with him by next season.
He’s 27 and played at Porcupine State, but would have been a top prospect before if anyone saw him. Needles games are difficult to get to, even tougher than Erie, Pa.
I’m always choked when a performance like that doesn’t come out on top. Poor kid…
King Richard or maybe Beaupre. I remember Hasek as unbeatable and lucky but you knew the opposition wasn’t going to score no matter what except a bogus Goal.
What a 2017 draft for the Stars.
Oettinger, Heiskanen, and Robertson.
Winning the cup usually had to go through the lames.
This is the way.
BRING ON THE BOA!!!
If Oilers pick up where they left off, Flames will have their hands full.
Dallas is notably slower.
Was hoping for Dallas for that reason. The Flames speedy forwards will be trouble for our D-core. Also Dallas would have been a way better hockey trip than Cowtown.
Revelations it is then. . . Battle of AB incoming.
If Leon and Nurse are not healthy, it going to be tough. Also the refs won’t call much.
BOA. As it was written.
Whelp. I’m not looking forward to all the crap that McDavid and company will have to deal with in this next series.
Once he one-punches Lucic, things will calm down.
Confident that for once Betman’s NHL (refs) won’t favor the opposition.
Hopeful, rather.
Bring it on
Get ready for 8pm starts…..
Wed Night: Game 1
I hope 4 days of rest is enough to get Draisaitl, Nurse, Puljujarvi all in good, or at least better health. I also hope it helps get the older vets like Smith, Keith, Ryan, and Russell some rest.
Well that’s going to make for a more emotional two weeks.
And difficult
B. o. A.
Luv it!
There’s exactly one member of the Dallas Stars who deserved a better fate.
Oettinger ungodly
c’mon OT2.
This is getting Scrivensesque
This is some first round 97 Cujo shit……
Game is either starting to get real sloppy, or these teams are awful.
Flames still look okay to me. Stars have some non-goaltending things going for them, but zero finish.
Seguin should have ended it.
LOL Refs want to get to bed before midnight
The Stars were just saving it all for overtime, apparently.
Come on Dallas let’s win it on a fluke.
I’m rooting for a record breaking overtime length.
If Dallas wins, we start Tuesday.
If Flames win, we start Wednesday.
If OT lasts 80+ hours, maybe something else happens.

@StLouisBlues
to start Tuesday.
@NYRangers
@Canes
,
@NHLFlames
@EdmontonOilers
would start Wednesday. #HockeyTwitter
I’ve got Zadorov – he who should be suspended this game – putting in an own goal to send the Flames golfing.
Flames Stars moving on to Game 8.
Dallas playing for the tie!
Holy Hell – can I wait through an intermission and stay up for OT for this game? I mean, I am up at 6am on Sundays and, after last night’s game 7, I’ve been less tired before……
I’d save your energy for the Oil and hit the hay, that’s my intention
Dallas really missing Hintz’s offense.
The games with Hintz were only marginally better. They don’t seem to have a very healthy relationship with offence.
Not much of an attempt at offense tonight.
Games are won and lost on the margin…
(Edit: plus he’s built for game 7s. He’s their Paul)
Somebody described Oilers-Kings game 7 as the most lopsided 2-0 game they’d ever seen. This is the most lopsided 2-2 tie I’ve ever seen.
Without question. Complete beat down except on the scoreboard.
That would be me….
Hrudey is nervous.
Update. Among the godless Flames fans. Im hoping the Stars sneak this one out because they are awful. Famous last words? Maybe. But this Flames team has been completely legit. They are very good as we already know. Heck them.
I mean, there’s something to be said for dodging the hot goalie…but not that much to be said for it. Go Stars (spits).
Jake O. is doing his darnedest to steal this series and he very well may.
I don’t like his odds of stealing two in a row……
The dice have no memory.
Meh – Markstrom could just as easily be hot, right?
The hell of it is that he kind of has been.
Dallas could make a peewee goalie look like a vezina winner.
Yeah, this is the first game of the Flames-Stars series I’ve watched, and I’m not having trouble deciding which of these teams I’d rather face.
Lucic looks like a speed demon out there against the Stars.
You’d prefer to not play the team with 15 shots and virtually no o-zone time?
I’m hoping for the Stars to pull out a win (90’s me is dying inside saying that). There’s actually several reasons for that;
1) I hate the Flames, so them losing is always a win.
2) I hate the Flames, so them losing is always a win.
3) I don’t trust the Flames in a series to not leave more than a few Oilers injured in ‘totally not intentional’ plays.
4) Did I mention I don’t like the Flames?
5) Home ice advantage.
6) The Flames are much, much better than the Stars.
How did Dallas make the playoffs?
When did Benn and Seguin become so bad?
They made the playoffs because the offense no longer runs through Benn and Seguin
Lol Flames.
Agreed!
I was very happy the crowd only got to cheer for like a minute.
Sucked the air right out of the building!
Oettinger is playing lights out. Can’t imagine he can hold up another 35 min +
If Robertson had sunk that one he just rang off the post…
He’s done it all series. He’s the single reason the Flames didn’t sweep the Stars.
Yeah, he’s great but Dallas just can’t hold the red tide, 2-2
Oettinger scared me more than the whole flames team tonight watching the game. Not sure if more relieved the stars lost or the flames won.
The crackdown on cross-checking is completely gone.
To the surprise of none.
Kassian got called and fined
BOA sounds awesome but I’d prefer home ice. Especially if it came down to another game 7. Plus, I’m pretty sure most of flame nation was rooting against the Oilers last night. Karma is …
I actually don’t know a single Flames fan who doesn’t want the Battle of Alberta. To the point they were actually nervous watching (and rooting for) the Oilers.
it’s been so bizarre.
Hrudey sounds stressed and desperate.
Like a teenage girl?
Rags take it in OT. MSG is bouncing. Pens outshot them 45-30. Breadman with the winner, screened shot on the powerplay.
I didn’t like the tying goal. The decapitation gave me ptsd. Pens played hard.
The League needs to attend to this tactic. Like now. Like why didn’t they after it happened to Nurse?
The Phlegms v Stars series is incredible. I do not remember the last time I have seen two teams play so poorly in the playoffs.
BOA would be great. However, I believe that the Oilers would have a better chance of success against the Stars. Also, cannot cheer for the Flames. GSG
Dallas did not fool around. Jamie Benn 40 seconds in. 1-0
The Rangers sure can skate.
not fast enough to catch Rodriguez – beautiful SHG
I have a good feeling about tonights game going back to 2006 the Flames couldn’t crack the wall the Ducks had set up in game 7. It was a coming out party for Perry and especially Getzlaf was a beast in that game 7. If Dallas goes with the Benn Seguin Robertson line that line will burn the Flames. Robertson has such a heavy shot I’m looking for him to get the best of Markstrom. What that big goof Zadorov did to Glendening will fuel the Stars tonight.
A few points:
I thought that was Athanasiou’s best game at Roger’s Place.
I will never forget where I was when we won the draft lottery.
I will never forget where I was for Dustin Brown’s last NHL game.
NHL Player Safety should take a look at Kalyev. But they won’t.
Done, done and on to the next one.
Until next time, friends!
Lots of talk and posts about McDavid putting the team on his back and willing the Game 7 victory. No doubt McDavid was phenomenal, played one of his “best games ever” and the story line has credence.
At the same time, I do want to acknowledge that the entire team, and coaching staff, were at a high level last night – they all followed McDavid’s lead.
They played their structure to a T, the coach’s deployed their personnel with precision, etc.
McDavid was indeed “otherworldly” but that was also a gutsy full-team victory.
This team is NOT McDavid/Drai and a bunch of slugs!
I noticed that if the puck was close, it was one, two power skate strides, body over the puck and wait for support. No waving vaguely with a chocolate wrist with the stick like it was a feather duster.
As for rough stuff? Take the big legal hit when safe. Take a number if not. Revenge on the scoreboard and a brutal forecheck and the cycle game from the very depths of Hades.
The trick isn’t that they weren’t ever capable of playing this way; the trick is sustain, game in, game out.
Sweep the leg. No mercy. Cobra Kai!
