All prospects come with some uncertainty, defense more than forwards to my eye. Injuries are part of it and Oilers fans have endured enough of those, from Selmar Odelein to Nick Stadjuhar and Oscar Klefbom. It’s a difficult position to play, and we saw some of that last night as the Calgary Flames offered a significant challenge to the talented (and rusty) home team.

LINES, PAIRINGS AND GOALIES LAST NIGHT
- Jack Campbell was calm in net, solid and professional. The goal against was purely a defensive error and no blame on the goalie from this observer.
- Calvin Pickard played well, more than competently. I’m liking the Oilers goaltending depth chart very much this season.
- Darnell Nurse made a poor play on the first goal against, was inconsistent with the puck and fought some guy twice. A broken hand for the top defenseman isn’t a good way to go through training camp. I thought his coverage was fine, 56 percent expected goals.
- Cody Ceci had an assist, played reliably in all areas and defended well. Broken record. Good broken record.
- Brett Kulak scored the winning goal, three shots, created two rebounds and we talk about his offense far more than I thought we would in the night of the trade. He was 79.5 percent expected goals.
- Evan Bouchard’s passing belongs in the Louvre. He may one outlet pass to Evander Kane that made angels weep. He did have a giveaway, 81 percent expected goals.
- Philip Broberg had a poor night, despite getting an assist and posting an expected goal percentage of 71.7. He was beaten clean off a rush by Rasmus Andersson and played loose on everything. Something’s amiss, people are mentioning he’s muscle bound or some such but it doesn’t matter. He won’t make the team with that kind of performance.
- Ryan Murray blocked a shot, kept the puck in effectively on a couple of sequences at the blue line, and with Broberg struggling becomes an increasingly important signing.
- Zach Hyman was up to his usual hijinks, three shots, two HDSC, plus a turnover. He is a key element on this team, determination, skill and a good motor is always in style.
- Leon Draisaitl scored the game’s first goal, a nifty shorthanded marker. At five-on-five, he drew a penalty, had a couple of giveaways and looked eager to join the fight. He was a big part of a strong power play that didn’t cash, and ended the night with six shots on goal.
- Jesse Puljujarvi drew a penalty, had a shot on goal, was credited with a takeaway (I believe there was more) and played the game we know him for all evening. Made a couple of very nice passes, didn’t get the puck out on a play and the Flames lingered for a little longer.
- Evander Kane ran into Connor McDavid and the world stood still. He also had four shots, two HDSC, took a penalty, three hits. Of all the giant left wingers to play with 97, Kane fills up the most boxes in the summary and he does it consistently.
- Connor McDavid was fast as lightning and brilliant as always, you get the feeling he’s ready. He didn’t miss a shift, set up several teammates for goals that didn’t cash. He’s McDavid.
- Kailer Yamamoto made the single most impressive play on the night, a PK sortie that began as keepaway, resulted in a good shot from a bad angle and a rebound cashed by Draisaitl. At five-on-five, he had three shots, four HDSC but took four hits.
- Ryan McLeod should be called the Mississauga Missile, he is so fast. Two shots at five-on-five, both HDSC, a splendid night for an emerging talent.
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had two shots, two HDSC, two takeaways and won six of 10 in the dot. This line was so strong I bet we see it again.
- Warren Foegele either reserved a spot in the top-nine or showcased the hell out of himself last night. At five-on-five, he had one shot, created a rebound, five hits and had good legs all game long. A solid night.
- Luke Esposito had an assist, shot, HDSC and looked strong on the fourth line for Edmonton. The assist involved plenty of good, hard work and the fact he’s still on the roster is a good arrow.
- Noah Philp took a penalty, drew one, had two takeways, and is 9-6 during the preseason in the faceoff circle. I think he gets sent out, maybe today (there’s going to be a lot of them soon), but Philp may play this season for Edmonton.
- Seth Griffith played 6:46 and didn’t get a chance to show his skills on this night.
DEFENSEMEN
Philip Broberg’s performance last night opens up all kinds of opportunities for every lefty defenseman in captivity. The young man can still turn it around, I’d play him tonight with Ceci. This most interesting camp just got more interesting.
Finally got around to watching a bit of hockey last night.
Skinner – was great, excellent even in OT. He looks to be getting set and square quicker this year. Could be a preseason thing but he’s moving a fun reading things really well. Had is long arms in the right spots for more than a few saves.
Holloway was fun to watch. Offensively he’s a killer. We’ll need to be patient on defense with, saw a few standing around watching moments. Bottom six to get the pacing right is a good spot, brought up to top lines for good play. Really good players might be able to burn him in own zone.
Benson – folks were right he’s quicker and faster this year. I thought his own zone coverage was good and the forecheck justly was evident. Needs a dose of confidence offensively. Still think there’s a player here.
JP – interesting game. Came along as the game went on. Ran a few sorties, stopped setting to/watching Holloway and that lined hummed a bit more as a result. Stopping thinking Bison King and just play!
As Bob said tonight… if you’re going to risk Samorukov on waivers, tomorrow is the day, right?
And if they don’t waive tomorrow, does that mean they’re not worried?
Sign Demers. Sign Murray. Sign Virtanen. Give everyone else time (injuries anyway so there will be no time). Oh wait, we can’t. The cap. Trade then.
Murray is signed already
Least involved I’ve seen Hamblin this pre-season, and the same for Bourgault. Malone and McKegg scarcely played . Kemp and Samo took the brunt of the PKs, which was nice to see.
Best game thus far for Pujo, Benson. Holloway doesn’t have bad games. Apparently. Boberg was not strong in the first half, but much better after that. Nemo the other way around.
Demers gets played so much that I wonder how much wishful thinking there is there by the org. His experience is obvious in his play… as are his limitations.
I think Voldemort gets a two-way. What else is he going to do? I don’t see how he can turn down an AHL salary.
He Who Shall Not Be Named represents RW depth with NHL experience.
I don’t think the org is going to throw that away and I don’t see how Verboten can negotiate anything better.
A two-way costs us nothing but competition for a roster spot in the A and right now Lavoie is out. And it’s not a slot we’re exactly solid at if the injury bug hits the varsity squad.
I want us to sign The V just so we can keep reading these puns all season long.
I do not think pun means what you think it means.
Thoughts on tonight’s game:
Skinner was outstanding.
Kemp and Kesselring had good games. Kemp seems a bit more solid but with less flair. Could see either/both for cups of coffee this year.
Didn’t notice Samourukov that much. Demers has skill but looks slow. I think just call up depth at this point in his career – I don’t see him making the roster.
Broberg had a poor first then by the third was displaying his passing skill. Nemo had another good game and his skating looked pretty smooth.
Bourgault had his most noticeable game of the pre season, could’ve had a goal. Esposito had a good game in an energy role. Hamblin was OK.
Benson showed off a good shot and continued his agitation. Was probably the second best Edmonton forward. Malone looked a bit slower than previous games. JV isn’t doing enough to look like more than a call up type of player.
Holloway kept turning it on more as the game progressed. He really does remind me of Hall. McKegg doesn’t look like an NHL player. Puljujarvi had his best game of the preseason and made a hell of a play in OT to take the body of Lambert and steal the puck.
Janmark isn’t doing much but shows speed and some skill. Ryan was OK. Shore looked skilled and pretty fast and wore am A for the second time this preseason – a bit surprised considering he was scratched all the players last year, but maybe the coaching staff is getting to know him and like his game.
My guess at cuts after tonight: Demers, Kemp, Kesselring, McKegg, JV, Bourgault, Esposito, Hamblin plus probably Philp, Rodrigue, Peters. A couple of these tryout/AHL guys might get offered an NHL deal though.
Summarizing!
Another productive night for the Oilers NA prospects, led by Jake Chiasson whose goal and two assists earned him 1st star in a 4-1 victory. (The sequence where he scores begins at 1:43 of this video.)
Said victory came at the expense of Moose Jaw, where Max Wanner earned an assist on their lone goal, along with a game-high 5 SOG. However, near the end of the game, he received a 5-and-a-game for a slewfoot, so supplemental discipline could be in his immediate future. We wait.
Reid Schaefer made his return to Seattle and scored the eventual game-winner with a team-high 5 SOG in a 6-4 victory.
Over in the O, Matvey Petrov followed up yesternight’s 3-point effort with another pair (1+1) tonight in North Bay’s loss
Skyler Brind’Amour was the only player south of the border to find the scoresheet, with a goal in Quinnipiac’s victory.
No points for either Mazura or Maatta, while Munzenberger was not in the Vermont lineup today…reason unknown.
Maata took 3 consecutive penalties in the first (Connecticut had 9 PP’s to 3 for Vermont, went 1/9, but won 4-1), took 1 shot and was 15/21 on the dot in a losing effort.
Only saw the third but Broberg looked good out there. Strong passes, and great skating.
Skinner says he has been working on his skating this summer.
That’s one thing we never look at for goalies…
? Skating, edgework is a goalies foundation. Is this sarcasm?
Sure… now point to the comment where this is examined.
You have nearly twenty years to choose from, lol.
So, yeah… no, not sarcasm.
Rather a look at the eyeglasses we look through.
Kane McDavid Yamo
Hyman Draisaitl JP
Mcleod RNH Foegle
Benson Holloway Ryan
Benson showed up tonite. The goal he scored was a beauty snipe, and he was a relatively hard nosed, physical checker all nite.
And he’s as cheap as it gets. Those lines with
Nurse Ceci
Kulak Bouchard
Broberg Barrie
Murray
Campbell
Skinner
Fits under the cap by about a million dollars I believe
Checked the math. Roster = 77299666 + dead cap 4166667 + previous bonus overage from last year 896000 = cap space of 137667. I think you missed the bonus overage… but still works. I see it with Janmark instead of Ryan but their cap hits are identical so no diff dollar wise. Could still fit Sammy or Neimo instead of Murray and nor be over if so desired. Unfortunately, cannot nibble at the bottom of the roster to create enough space fora 22 or 23 man roster without doing some kind of trade. Not picking a side on that issue, but as an example, trading Foegele at 2750000 for non roster assets means we could run a full 23, adding three forwards at near minimum- one for Foegele’s spot and two as #13 and #14.SO Adding to above Janmark, Philp and Shore instead of Foegele for example.
So in summary, trading Foegele for non cap impact (prospects/picks) lets us run
Kane McDavid Yamo
Hyman Draisatl Puljujarvi
McLeoad RNH Janmark(or Ryan)
Benson Holloway (someone making less than 1195000)
Stone Philp
Same Defense and Goalies as mentioned previously. Roster cost 77437166 + dead cap 4166667 + previous bonus overage 896000 for cap space of 167 dollars. Damn tight but just fits.
Holland has previously stated, Holloway either makes it into the top 9 or it’s back to the AHL where he’ll get a lot more ice time! Your lineup needs adjustment.
Great to see Skinner outduel Hellebuyck. And Winnipeg had the better lineup.
Joyful difference seeing so many prospects with an actual pulse. Feeling pretty good about things tonight!
I always feel bad for beating the Jets.
Never feel bad about beating a team from Winnipeg [spits].
You know what? They had their time! GORD DAMN THE AVCO CUP! NO MORE GUILT FOR the 80s!
On 2nd thought, that Hawerchuk was such a nice young man.
Not sure I feel the same way about Kyte, Turnbull, MacLean, Boschman (after we traded his ass)
Pretty sure that’s the football in Ernie AfaTarkus spittin on the Peg there…
So I have to agree. 😉
Whatever gave you that idea?
[grumblegrumblegrumblegrumblegrumble]
The was the most interesting pre-season game so far. Oilers were out-matched on paper, but put in a really good effort, considering.
Lambert should have scored.
Not a great effort by Holls lol
This was the funnest game to watch this week, IMO. Amazing the difference a beer makes, lol.
And now we get a shoot out against Helley
Our less-experienced…less-NHL’rs, just simply out-worked them. Shameful Jets! Ha.
Hope for Borg, Holloway and Hamblin here
What the heck has gotten into Shore since the OT period hahaha
He’s always had some offensive talent. I’m not sure why he can’t put it together.
Confidence.
OT … Skinner is nothing short of spectacular.
Dima Benson Verboten
Gord way too many combos. Woody being very democratic here but shots are like 0-8
Pujo Shore Demers
Broberg is so comfortable with all this open ice. even in his own zone.
Esposito has done what he needs to to earn an NHL pact. Clearly it’s being considered since he’s played so much and this late into pre season. Given they have room to add to the 50 man I actually like giving him a contract, even if he has a low ceiling, because I think the org’s willingness to up their AHL guys to NHL contracts gives them a leg up on the others when it comes to attracting talent to AHL deals.
I don’t think Demers makes this team but no problem with him as RD depth for call up. Not sure if he’d be open to riding the bus at this stage in his career though.
Benson Holloway Broberg open the OT
Esposito has been impressive, as has Benson. Broberg has looked much better in the 3rd and of course Holloway has be the best Oilers skater by far.
Woody puts Esposito, Benson and Hamblin out with a minute left in the period and they deliver an excellent shift… especially Esposito
11-7 Jets-Oilers in terms of roster players per Bob
Bennie to the Borg via transatlantic flight. Doesn’t cash but man, man.
Was going to have a minor quibble with Woody tonight for not putting Borg in a position to succeed with his linemates but he then moved him up with Benson and Holloway and it’s been fun to watch. I assume Holloway was playing C on that line?
Bennie and the Jets
Fly Borg
(by that Zappa guy)
Holloway is the best player on the ice for either team and its not particularly close. 5v5 and both specials teams he has been fantastic, and has beaten Hellebucyk clean twice only to be stymied by the post.
If he is not on the team past the time needed for his bonus on the cap, then this team is back to doing things for reasons other than winning. I do not hope nor expect that to be the case.
Schaefer pots his first of the season to give Seattle a 5-1 lead in the second.
Holloway is not only going to make the team, he’s a lock for second unit PP.
I also want to say this team is playing for each other. They deliberately set up Demers for his goal and now just tried to set Verboten up.
Pretty passing play from Broberg to Holloway cross-ice to Demers for the 5v3 goal to tie the game at 2.
Holy Holloway!!!! This kid looks like something else.
Demers… to kgo’s delight
😉
Holloway with another break. Saved by Helley but also a light hook and drag, which leads to a 5 on 3. Woody calls a time out to rest Holloway
Woodcroft has challenged the refs’ intelligence
they agree and it’s waived off
From what I’m seeing so far this preseason(saw ’em good alert),I am liking what I see from the prospects re aggression on the puck, speed and confidence. Not intimidated by anyone, trying to play fast and hard. Is this a sign of the Oiler’s identity to expect in general this season? Me likey.
I would like to have seen Pujo think slot/crease-front there on the PP but he’s not exactly accustomed to playing that spot
Huge hold at the blue line by Broberg leads to a good slapper by Holloway on the 5 on 3. no screen no traffic no rebound though
Chiasson adds a goal to his pair of apples as the Wheaties open up a 4-1 lead in period 3.
Stauffer on Benson: “He looks a little quicker”
friggin toldya
😉
I’ve really liked Skinner’s rebound control thus far this pre-season. He seems focused on it too, which I also love. Shows awareness. Another excellent performance thus far tonight… with one caveat. I don’t like the lackadaisical puck play.
Not that he’s the only one… Why does it seem like every goalie acts so cas and nonchalant when they’re out browsing the board advertising? If there was ever a time for a backstop to demonstrate some charlie hustle…
And then he absorbs another point blank shot on the PK at the onset of the 3rd.
Tuned in late. Impressions so far on Holloway, Neimanen and Samurakov anyone?
Good, good, and quiet (which considering some of the gaffes he’s made isn’t a terrible thing for Samourukov).
Holloway has shown great speed and hit a post on a breakaway. Niemalainen has been the best of the young D all camp and today is no exception. Showed some mobility through the neutral zone/into the O zone a time or two.
Holloway is a rich man’s Taylor Hall
He’s at least a Hall away.
Glorious chance is right, Mr Moon.
Holloway rings the iron on a clean short-handed breakaway
If Kesselring can find that seam a half second quicker.
I liked that sortie. Good job, Dima. Jesse still looking to find the range but the important thing is he’s looking,. it will come.
Demers blowing that tire was ugly…put that guy out to pasture.
Now Wanner joins the apple parade as MJ cuts the lead in half.
After One:
Oilers 1, Jets 1
Shots 15-4 Winnipeg
Corsi five-on-five 11-8 Winnipeg
==
Benson what a shot! Nice play by Virtanen on the goal. Skinner strong. Lots of love for Niemelainen, who continues to play well.
Underreported from the first period? Dubois faced Samorukov most often at five-on-five (2:25) and Dubois line was 2-0 shots and no high dangers. Nice.
1-1 as the Jets score on a two-man advantage as Perfetti jams home his own rebound to Skinner’s left.
Game on Shaw channel #350
