When I think of the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo Sabres, I think of Miro Satan. Many folks blame scouts, but the draft and development process also includes coaches, and looking past flaws and defensive issues is a big part of allowing young skill to breathe. Today, I’m going to blow your mind with a story about a man who knew what a player was, and moved heaven and earth to get him. You will not believe your eyes!!

Edmonton could get to 100 points by Game 75, it would mean finishing the month 3-1-0 and then getting four wins in the first five April games. Tall order, but something like it would be necessary to win the division. I remember a time when winning the regular season had big value in some organizations (Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers specifically). Now, the story.
FINDING PLAYERS
On March 3, 1968 the Toronto Maple Leafs signed a young forward to a five-game tryout. Rene Robert had been playing in the QJAHL for the Three Rivers Maple Leafs. Punch Imlach, the Leafs general maanger at the time, sent Robert to the Tulsa Oilers of the CPHL, a league filled with young and talented NHL hopefuls. He had a couple of assists in three games.
Robert would play the 1968-69 season in Tulsa, scoring 21 goals and 51 points in 59 games. He made an impression. On April 6, 1969 Toronto fired Imlach, and one month later sent Robert and defenseman Brad Selwood to the Vancouver Canucks (of the old WHL) for Ron Ward. Selwood would play in the NHL and WHA, Ward was a star in the WHA, and Robert was destined for an impact career in the world’s best league.
The Maple Leafs purchased Robert and Selwood from the WHL Canucks on May 15, 1970. The NHL Canucks were arriving that summer, along with the Buffalo Sabres. The general manager in Buffalo was a man rumoured to be taking over in Oakland and in Vancouver.
Punch Imlach. Imlach knew Robert from the TML, and acquired him, lost him, acq–anyway, here’s what happened.
- June 8, 1971: Buffalo selects Robert in the Intra-League draft from Toronto.
- June 8, 1971: Pittsburgh selects Robert in the Intra-League draft from Buffalo.
- March 4, 1972: Buffalo acquires Robert from Pittsburgh for Eddie Shack.
For some reason Imlach drafted Robert but didn’t place him on the roster (requiring a drop), or more accurately, acquired him, put him on the roster, and then took him off the roster at the same intra-league draft. Penguins grabbed him and it cost Shack a year later.
Robert would eventually find his way back to Toronto, on January 30, 1981. The general manager for TML? Punch Imlach.

Ken Holland built his career on identifying talent. Long before he became Detroit’s general manager, he was helping stock the organization’s talent pool as a scout. When he arrived in Edmonton, the word “Broberg” in the collective social bubble surrounding the team rose sharply. Holland talked about him long before the draft and the organization did in fact choose the big Swedish blue. Since then, Broberg has developed, added to his injury history and played well enough to land in the NHL as a third-pairing regular (as shown in the article above).
In the time since Broberg was drafted, Holland signed Darnell Nurse to a long contract, acquired Brett Kulak and then completed the set on LH defense by trading for Mattias Ekholm at last year’s deadline. He couldn’t have done a better job if he tried! Now, Holland was doing his job, trying to win Stanley.
The man who replaces Holland will want to build the team in his own image. The new man is also going to be looking down the barrel of some stark cap realities. I think Broberg might be traded, but if he is, expect a similar player in return. Someone under control and with an NHL future.
FINDING PLAYERS
Max Wanner had another top flight game last night. He scored a dandy goal to open the proceeding and played a rugged game throughout. He’s really coming on now, as these splits reveal:
- Games 1-19: 19 games, 1-1-2 (.11); 11-15 EV GF-GA (42 pct)
- Games 20-38: 19 games, 2-3-5 (.26); 12-13 EV GF-GA (48 pct)
- Games 21-59: 21 games, 2-6-8 (.38); 18-5 EV GF-GA (78 pct)
- Overall: 59 games, 5-10-15 (.25); 41-33 EV GF-GA (55 pct)
Wanner is going to eat someone’s lunch and grab an NHL job in the not too distant future. Holy crap! And you know what? He looks the part. Calm feet, snarl, fast train, strong as an ox. Holy hell this guy has passed all the other pupils in 60 AHL games.
When people say the Oilers scouting staff sucks, they are wrong. What they should be saying is that the Oilers scouting staff is underused because of traded picks.
All of this say the following: Not playing Broberg and trading picks in the name of finding the Great Northwest Stanley is justifiable. It’s the right thing to do. In the words of Warren Zevon, I’ll sleep when I’m dead. Find Stanley.

New post is up

I guess the Machine Head wasn’t better than the rest.
Probably should’ve been Made in Japan.
Leafs are looking forward to seeing McDavid set up Hyman next game for a hat trick.
How about Oilers defence tonight? 3 goals and 5 assists.
Oil sign Patrik Stefan’s kid:
https://oilersnation.com/news/edmonton-oilers-reportedly-nearing-entry-level-deal-with-whl-winger-james-stefan
Bouchard with a +3 tonight to go along with his PPG average.
As of now he’s top ten in the league in plus/minus.
That was like…simultaneously enjoying a a DoD blowout win (Pat’s handjob on a Greyhound), and watching a contending team flex off a lesser but pesky opponent. It had elements of both.
Sometimes, for me, when the current Oil really light it up, it feels less like McDrai stomping mortals and more like the Austins going for a romp. Don’t ask me why.
Fun.
I’m sorry, “Pat’s handjob?”
Black Dog Hates Skunks ref.
Preds did beat the Cats and the Blues did beat the Sens, but Veg is up 1-0 on the Krak, a team they absolutely own usually. Habs have managed to break the gose egg in Van City, now 3-1.
Habs are done, now down 4-1 with 7 mins to play.
Krak and Kiniggits still at 1-0 after two…
Ekholm said in his interview (obvious paraphrasing) they went into the room after the 1st, and talked about how bad they were, can’t play that way in the playoffs cuz you’ll lose. He said we need to play like that 2nd & 3rd, for 60 minutes. He speaks the truth, I like hearing that.
He was absolutely amazing in the game btw. But I gotta say, Darnell has found his game, he was strong tonight… looking more every game, like the Nurse we (I, at least) thought he was.
Thanks. I thought something must have happened during an intermission. Nice to hear it came from the players and not the coach.
That first period was so loose by both teams, it was ridiculous.
Sabres never stopped playing stupid loose hockey all game. Unfortunately for them the Oilers did. Almost every Oiler goal came off a stupid Sabres gaffe. Meanwhile we allowed what? 5 shots against in the 3rd?
Did not mind Stetcher’s game.
Fiesty, decent passing & coverage
Stecher has looked good with Nurse.
I have a feeling we’ll see Stecher get in some playoff games. I really liked him with Nurse.
Hyman now goes for 50 against the Leafs in Toronto. That is glorious.
I wouldn’t be mad if he scored #50 the next night on Sunday while I’m in the stands 🙂
Luukkonen was out of luukk in the third.
Was that because he was Lukkonen all the wrong places?
Must have. LOL.
They say ukko make your own luukkonen. He will have to pekka himself up and get ready for the next one.
Ekholm is ridiculously good
Did the good guys win by enough tonight to satisfy the masses?
Screw the masses, I only care what (most) people here have to say
Did the good guys win by enough to satisfy (most of) the people here.
8-3
It’s 1984 Oiler’s hockey again!
What. A. Game!
The last few goals seemed just plain rude. Eat shit Buffalo!
That second half of the game was just grinding them down into a fine powder.
If Buffalo can keep their team together they should be really good in a year or two. Excellent goalie, a pile of good young D. If Peterka learns to play a little more of a safe game, they’ll be cooking.
People have said that about Buffalo the past ten years…
Exactly. They are supposed to be good next year every year.
Holy mackerel, that was a great game!!! Ground em down and the talent shone in the third!!! I think we broke the sabres hotshot goalie…crying shame, that is…lol
Only 6 skaters without a point tonight.
Oilers holding a clinic tonight.
He scored with his stick this time? Nice.
BOOM!!! Brownie!!! Night got even better!!!
C🚨NN🚨R BR🚨WN CANN🚨T BE ST🚨PPED!
Uncle, Uncle!
lol – Brown is like the Oilers cigar celebration at the end of a blowout win now.
Yeah, he’s money when up by 4!
That made me laugh more than it should have.
Connor Brown shot it into the net! It’s a miracle!
Lowetide I think I have found your Pisani for 2024 his name is Ryan Mcleod
I would be okay with the Highlander theme being played north of a dozen times during the playoffs.
Do you want to live forever!
DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVAH!!!
Simple Minds are a Scottish band.
Play that Simple Minds song from The Breakfast Club every time he scores.
Connor Brown the sniper, lol.
My goodness that was a dominant 3rd period though.
They didn’t even let Skinner get to .900 (ie – 30 SA).
Brown on a tear!!!!
U-PL solved. Next!
Games like this are why I get mad when they only score 2.
One solid period of pedal down and they’re at 7 against an excellent goalie.
Same for me. They need to be a team that pushes all game. While being responsible
You don’t hook thoroughbreds to a plow, and you don’t put the Budweiser horses in the Derby
Ekholm post-game agrees with our take.
That man should have an ‘A’ on his chest.
No he didn’t.
Okay, I’ve been drinking so I need clarification for my besotted brain.
So you’re saying the Oilers must be dominant in every fooking minute of every fookin’ game or You’re angry with them.
I believe our gracious host said, and I think I quote but I’m too lazy to look it up, “”The pursuit of perfection is grand but …”
As an ancient, I have found that enjoyment often follows from the exceeding of reasonable expectations. When expectations are unreasonably high you rob yourself of a lot of enjoyment.
We all fan in our own way, but why rob yourself of the enjoyment this game should engender.
Please ignore grammar, spelling and attitude, the page is getting blurry.
No – I specifically hate when this team plays a style that leads to it not scoring and being vulnerable to loss because they only score two – and it happens because of themselves.
As for enjoyment – I am clearly in a different camp. High bars. Always. That’s all that’s worth it.
I should also clarify that the “mad” does not stay with me outside of a few minutes. Nor take away from singular moments.
Sounds like that might be different than others as well.
“Games like this are why I get mad when they only score 2.”
“I should also clarify that the “mad” does not stay with me outside of a few minutes. Nor take away from singular moments.”
More clarification requested
If you only get mad for a few minutes, and the team is 7-1-2 in their last 10 games, why is it worthy of comment after two wins in a row.
It seems to me your less than happiness exceeds a few minutes.
BOOM!!! A zinger from McLeod!!!
Shoot first mentality on the 2 on 1 by McCloud.
that actually looked like pass first mentality and then shoot last second because the pass wasn’t there
Most GA Lukkonen has give up this season. So sad.
Last 7GA game was March 19th, 2023 FWIW.
8 GA is a career high.
There’s always next year.
Nice to see we didn’t get goalied tonight!
Luukonen just broke that record again.
He’s lucky the Oilers are not good enough to “turn it on” yet like those other great teams.
Hella of shot by Highlander!
Great release by Highlander
Good for McLeod.
Well this is fun!
I’ve played hockey against people who could retrieve pucks the way McDavid’s stick looks like a puck electromagnet. They’d drive me insane.
Kane really been looking tonight. Been a bit snakebit
Perry is unlikely to get a star – but he’s been excellent with this game in the balance.
Perry’s saving it for the playoffs.
He’s going to make the difference against teams with trying to kill Oilers players in the playoffs.
BOOM!!! What a pickup by Connor and wicked pass for a non Hyman goal!!!
Hat tip to the Knoblauch for going to The Mega Powers when he did. They tore that period apart.
48 for Zack Hyman.
Sick steal and pass by Connor,
Holy moly Hyman with 48!!!
Hyman pops another cherry!
Hyman and Ekholm in a scoring race.
Lovely pass by Perry.
PK getting it done tonight.
completely lost shape on the PK but somehow survived
Ah, the Oilers will never forget the swarm!
Could easily have called 2 and 2 there.
Went down pretty easy for a big guy, eh? Refs wanna make it interesting, I guess…
Perry chopping wood. Not a great penalty to take at this stage of the game.
