The Oilers drafted a terrific prospect in Jeff Petry 20 years ago, he emerged as a quality defender over most of the last two decades. He’s currently just shy of 1,000 NHL games and should be regarded as one of Edmonton’s greatest draft picks outside the first round. Ever.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN APRIL
- On the road to: VEG, SJS, LAK, ANA (Expected 2-2-0) (Actual 2-2-0)
- At home to: STL, SJS (Expected 1-0-1) (Actual 1-0-0)
- On the road to: WPG (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- At home to: LAK (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: SJS (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected results: 5-3-1, 11 points in 9 games
- April result: 3-2-0
- Current record: 45-28-5, 95 points in 78 games
A win tonight makes a 100-point season for the Oilers possible based on the rest of the schedule. Edmonton has finished with 100+ points nine times previously, those seasons coming in two clusters. The first came 1982-1987 and included three Stanley Cup winning teams. The second cluster is ongoing, having started in 2021-22.
BROTHERS BECOME DISTANT COUSINS
One of the problems with changing managers and coaches constantly is that brothers become distant cousins when there is a change at the top. So, Jeff Petry was drafted by Kevin Lowe (GM), Craig MacTavish (Coach) and Kevin Prendergast (scouting director). By the time he was about to sign a long-term deal, MacT was the GM, the coaching job was changing a mile a minute and Stu MacGregor was the scouting director.
Once the Petry trade was made, there was a hole on defense because all of the $4 million guys were old and or slow. So, the incoming GM cast about and traded Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson, partly because Hall was from a previous administration (Tambellini, Renney, MacGregor).
We see it plenty in Edmonton because there’s so much changeover in the important spots. If you look at the Oilers recent draft history, most of the chosen players who will approach 1,000 games (Ryan McLeod, Dylan Holloway, Philip Broberg, maybe Mike Kesselring) in this era will play those games in other NHL cities.
Which brings us to Evan Bouchard and Stuart Skinner. They are (along with Vasily Podkolzin and Ty Emberson) the “youth” on this Oilers team.
I’m not sure what Stan Bowman has in mind for summer procurement, but it’s possible both Bouchard and Skinner are sent away for more experienced players who have less chaos in their game.
One day, this organization is going to wake up and find itself old, slow and without a single Stanley. It’s sad, actually.
Today on the Lowdown (Sports 1440, starts at noon) we’ll be joined by the usual suspects (Steve Lansky, Tyler Yaremchuk, Declan Krueger with Declanations) and enjoy the warmth of the sun. We’ll talk about the most confusing Oilers season in decades, and ponder what may come. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio, Radioplayer Canada, it’s available post-show on apple and spotify, and we tweet it out on X.
New for The Athletic: What did the Edmonton Oilers’ minor-league system accomplish in 2024-25?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6269669/2025/04/11/oilers-ahl-2024-25-stats/
With three games to go, Oilers have now picked up 17 out of 13 games played in my Hunter1909 end of season Oiler’s mini-season.
20 points total gives them a nice momentum entering the playoffs.
Hmmm…McDavid has 7 points in the last 2 games since he’s returned to the team following his vacation.
If you think Oilers are getting 20 points entering the playoffs, press Thumbs Up.
otherwise, press thumbs down.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Jason Gregor
ffs. If not wasn’t for bad luck, we’d have no luck at all.
We’re in the dance. Rest em all. Rest Connor. They’re all vets. They’ll get up to speed pretty quick.
Yeah – the way Ekholm went down and skated off, it would seem he is not going to be ready to start.
Did notice that KK said words to the effect that Hyman’s was something existing that was re-aggravated.
No reason at this point to risk any of our critical players with the playoffs 8 days away. The next 3 games really don’t matter.
San Diego pulls their goalie down 4 with four to go and Hamblin makes it 5-0.
Playoffs baby! Congrats to Emberson on his first goal as an Oiler! Great job by Picks, I didn’t like the first GA, but he shut the door in the third with some timely saves. Now just hoping for good news on the injury/illness/recovery/getting back in the groove front for a few key players before the start of the playoffs. Home ice would be great also.
Honestly, Connor seemingly 75% all year and missing the last 8, I kinda forgot what a menace can be. High tide floats all boat, eh? What a player!
4th line has a nice combination of speed, skill and rough. Philp will be a staple there next year and maybe this postseason. If Jonesy continues to play like this, I definitely have time for him.
When Bouch is moving his feet and dangling, like tonight, he is hard to contain. Sure hope this is the confidence emerging just in time. Not sure about Eks after those minor contacts and out again. Bouch may have a load to carry for us, this playoffs.
Picks made the stops when he had to. Hes not always pretty but he’s getting it done and that’s all anyone can ask of him.
A one-game road trip to Winnipeg – then back home to play LA the next night.
I don’t imagine ANY of the day to day guys will be on that plane
McDavid 7 points in two games. He’s gonna end up 4th in points my goodness.
That fourth line absolutely crushed it tonight (led the team in the possession, big time – couldn’t tell you about QoC off the top of my head).
That’s two games in a row
Whew. Finally found someone who can hit an empty net…
They scored an empty net goal!!!
McD with a 4 point night…ho hum
CLLLLLLLIIIIIINNNNNCCCHHHED!
An empty net goal – a Clinchmas Miracle!
Defenders staring at the puck and get outnumbered down low
I really shouldn’t watch the game when the opposition pulls the goalie..,hard on the ticker…
Rico taking Skinners spot. Saw Skinner shaking off his hand.
Now I’m jumping at everything.,,geez…
He’s back. Whew.
LOL Picks – getting faked out there – good thing no shot game.
He does tend to “over play” which is worrisome in a series against talent.
He’s made many great lateral saves in this recent stretch, several with the game on the line. My blood pressure has been lower with him on the ice this season, even though Skinners game has more upside
Re-extend this lead and lets move on.
BOOM!!! Cory ain’t ready for that rocking chair!
Very Wormy
Corey frigging Perry! #17
Good job by Bouchard to go down there. Have to help these zebras out
Oh, Jonesy!!! Keep at it, buddy! The dam will break! You’re not Janmark, after all!
Like how he followed the play and finished his check hard.
Shoot that Connor M.
Hamblin from behind the net to Josh P. for his first pro goal.
Savoie’s one-timer is stopped, D’Amato buries the rebound.
4-0.
Ekholm left after such minor contact, that one can only conclude one of 2 things – he wasn’t taking any chances, or he can’t even handle minor game play and will not be able to play this playoff season. Crossing fingers its the former, but logic would say its the latter…
Good news is Nurse will get a little extra break. He seemed to be on for the last 5 minutes of that period..
Hyman now? This is beyond ridiculous.
Hyman gone to the dressing room??? Dropping like flies….
Get Arvidsson off the pp.
what the hell is Henrique doing out there?
Hamblin scores the ugliest 4 on 1 goal in the history hockey as the 1st period winds down.
2-0.
Savoie to Hamblin to Mayhew – seeing eye shot for his first AHL goal.
1-0.
Mcdavid on for 5 of last 6 goals for.. on the opposite end of the spectrum, Henrique also in photo for most (all) of the last 2 games goals against. At this stage, I would prefer to see Philp in the lineup over Henrique.
and again..
Well that was a bad pass by Stetcher and then shot goes in off of Nurse. Not sure Henry was at fault on that one.
It’s true, but it was that same line again. There is not much defensive acumen on the line of Henrique, Arvy, Hyman.. like zero
Yea no defensive specialist on that line. I expect Hyman goes back with Connor in the playoffs. No question Henry has been struggling.
Bad goal by Picks – real bad.
Ty Embersfirstone! 🚨
Wow, Ty D. that was some BAD coverage.
Atta boy Ty – welcome to a McDavid shift!
Skinner looking good on McD wing
Holy hell, what a great shift by the 4th! Can’t believe Jobesy didn’t pot one! He had two glorious chances. Good chemistry with Philp and both are finishing checks! Hope Jonesy can get a couple and keep him in the conversation, come playoff time.
4th line was good last game and have had multiple great shifts today.
I wonder if having an actual center helps?
Summarizing!
Berry did not acquire soup but his ‘Jacks were victorious. Good tradeoff.
He’s got electric boots!
BOOM!!! BouchBomb!!!
Nathanial Day with 2 games in the ECHL – 2 shutouts – 24 saves tonight!
Wow what a fantastic start for the kid.
Sorry, i was wrong – he came in in relief as Ungar got hurt – 9 saves.
Ok. This time, for realz. McDavid, Make em pay! lol
What happened to Eks? Skates?
He went down the tunnel-broadcast hinted at mid ice contact with a SJ player – we’re not sure yet
Equipment would be good news
Frick. Talking to TD down the tunnel. Smfh…
I’m shocked we hot the call. McDavid, make them pay!
Great setup by Philip. Jonesy physical. Me likey both!
Emberson continues to struggle, that was a very poor pass back to Janmark when he activated – lucky Janmark made a solid/smart play.
The fact that Stuaff asked Bowman about every one of these signings and potential new signings and Berezkin specifically but didn’t mention Munzenburger leads me to believe they aren’t signing him.
RFA D-mean:
Contract talk isn’t the focus (playoffs is) but not hard rule not to talk.
Won’t say too much more about where they are at this point.
Let’s go Pickard get thst SV % up to a respectable 905 before seasons end. It’s time the boys start locking it down pre playoffs Skinner with a hatty tonight
