The Edmonton Oilers and New York Islanders are forever associated with each other in my brain. The first Final between the two (1983) featured an upstart Edmonton team versus an Islanders squad that took just three seasons from expansion to make the playoffs, and eight seasons from expansion to win Stanley. The 1980’s Oilers did even better: Made the playoffs year one after expansion and won Stanley in year five.
It’s more than that, though. In the 1983 FInal, I noticed for the first time that “let’s go, Islanders” and “let’s go, Oilers” sound identical coming out of the television. Damndest thing.
Both teams had brilliant architects (Bill Torrey in New York, Glen Sather in Edmonton), both had multiple Hall of Famers and both won many championships in a short period. Both were arrogant, both could be filthy and both scored gorgeous goals and hard-work goals. Both had two outstanding goaltenders for their Stanley runs.
This year’s Islanders look more like the 1972 version of the team than the 1980 edition. The two leading scorers are Kyle Palmieri (age 34) and Matthew Schaefer (who just turned 18). Emil Heineman is getting plenty of playing time. The team is 0-3-0 and has been outscored 13-7. This should be a victory for the Oilers, but the visitors have had some tough times on the road versus the Islanders over the years.
I don’t like the lines from practice yesterday. The No. 1 unit (Mangiapane-McDavid-Tomasek) is intriguing, and Nuge-Driasiatl-Roslovic should have success. The third line is Podkolzin-Frederic-Kapanen and that line could be a load. The fourth line has Howard-Henrique-Savoie and has a snow ball’s chance in hell of seeing 10 minutes together tonight. You kids out there, don’t play both blue-chip rookies together on the fourth line! I doubt it lasts.
Jake Walman won’t play, he’s day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day-day-to-day. Latest word has him playing on the weekend, so that’s probably March.
Oilers are suppressing opposition offense at incredible levels, but they’re not scoring in a dynamic fashion. Tonight is a great opportunity to fill the net.
On the Lowdown, our feature guest is Bagged Milk from Oilers Nation. We’ll talk Oilers-Islanders and the new lines. We’ll also talk Jays and CFL, and preview the NFL weekend. Noon to 2pm, Sports 1440 and You Tube.
Carter Hart has signed with Vegas.

Said to be a tryout.
I like both young guys, let’s check in on the offer sheet fiasco of devastation current status:
Holloway 4 GP, 1 Pt, 28.57 GF% (12th for F)
Bro 4 GP, 1 Pt, 42.86 GF% (4th for D)
Tough start
Off topic, but these images from the Habs tribute to the late Ken Dryden are really something:

My hero. Here’s a link to the video tribute from the Habs opening night ceremony.

Its’ been said that only Buckingham Palace does ceremony better than the Canadians, and this was another example. Loved watching Dryden growing up. Couldn’t emulate him, but sure tried – that kick save motion was something.
Necas is out doing Rantanen do far, it will be interesting to see how much MN wants next contract, and if the Avs were right betting on the younger player
In other news, Connor sits 46th in points, Leon 89th. C’mon fellas!
I wonder if MacKinnon’s $12.6 cap hit will serve as a ceiling on a Necas deal.
You’d think so. Unless Martin is greedy. Not many better teams to play on, and he gets to play with Nate
And Makar.
Considering they didn’t want to give Rantanen 12 I’m guessing number is lowe
That Walman bit is great. Hat-tip OP?
LT is moving the blog, possibly today to new host. Well, blog is already moved. He’s going to point domain at new host. This means if you’re written any incredible comments in this thread,🧵 they will be lost on the abandoned ship, Bluehost.
Oh man, hope it won’t affect comments on the last decade of posts.
Those should be right.
It’s really just that the blog has already technically been moved. We’re posting on the old site. The domain has to be pointed to the new website host.
What’s your new host? I (alas) have a couple of sites on Bluehost also
Outstanding visuals!
Is anybody interested in Power Wins for this season? If so what teams? It takes a lot of work bcs I don’t have fancy scraping skills, so I limit how many. If anyone interested in that look at team strength does have those data skills, please use them!
Or share them
I’ll count thumbs up, if they survive Ryan’s purge!
The Isles are now the front runners in the Harakiri for McKenna.
Its the sensible thing for that franchise to do.
Sending Sorokin to Edmonton on the cheap would aid them in their MvKenna quest immeasurably.
Early reports have yesterday’s pratice lines as a go for morning skate:
— my first hockey memories as a little guy was my mom yelling at the screen living and dying with every possession when the Leafs beat the Islanders in 7 games in 1978
– The next year Lanny MacDonald got traded to the Rockies, Sittler (who she secretly still loves!) tore off his C in protest. She never forgave Harold Ballard.
— The year after, the Leafs played the Islanders, and I asked my Mom why she wasn’t watching :she told me “I’m done being a leafs fan”
— The Islanders pounded the Leafs I. First round, then played the Oilers in round two
— we had just moved to Yellowknife from Toronto. (YK team was Edmonton : the Edmonton Journal was the paper delivery, cable Edmonton)
— Been an oiler fan ever since : that’s my Islanders connection. Fortunately Edmonton built off their losses and then wins against the Islanders : unlike the Leafs.
— I didn’t get to post fortunately why I was “done with the Oilers” following in the footsteps of my Mom who I swear to this day hasn’t watched them and cheers actively when she hears them lose.
— It’s a happy day every year when the Leafs get eliminated: many friends text me to congratulate as they know this
— I would have said goodbye to the Oilers if our Captain hadn’t signed a deal. Instead I get the share this story continue to cheer for them
Good story. I can never say goodbye, but when they are dumb dumbs I won’t watch, no reason to. Of course that’s not right now
With Connor it was black or white for me. I’m glad he chose white and upped his Oiler legend. I can accept if he wants to go at some point, but it would have to be in a way that allows the team to get what they should
— I almost gave up on baseball as a whole the year the called the strike with the Expos best team in baseball (preceded by B2B Jays World Series wins, so convinced was I that it was a conspiracy against Canada by MLB)
— whatever cMd does after 3 years I can live with. He’s sacrificed a lot and taken on a lot of risk to maximize his teams chance to win the Cup next 3 years.
— So I will enjoy these 3 years. It’s going to be amplified when he goes into his “walk year”
— unless of course the Oil are the defending Cup champion : I can’t imagine the circumstances that would lead to winning a Cup then signing for a boat and term elsewhere.
— That’s the best case scenario : winning first or 2nd or 3rd Cup in year 3…
It’s two way street for me. Yes players can do what they want, but teams deserve some respect and loyalty if they are showing it to their players, and the fans especially deserve it
Top players leaving in prime and the team getting little is not good, unless the team has earned it. There aren’t many of those these days
That fourth line is a head scratcher. (Henrique-Philp-Savoie) might tread water for more minutes.
I get the concept. Henrique is a smart skilled player, the two rookie wingers have talent and a nose for the net. If they do it right they should outscore lesser comp
I’m with you.
Let us pray
🙏
The problem is the two rookie wingers with all that talent and a nose for the net, aren’t there yet. They aren’t in a position to succeed. If they were in a position to succeed, they wouldn’t be playing with Henrique on the fourth line.
Put Philp between the two young guns and play them 10 mins, give.me crazy train.
Mike Bossy does not get the general reverence a top goal scorer like he was deserves. “Bossy, oh yeah he was great too”
He was amazing, one of the most natural goal scorers ever. I know a guy who grew up in the same neighbourhood and played hockey, says he was always a natural, and never very interested in the home end of the ice
Bossy-Trottier-Gillis one of the greatest lines ever and that Potvin dude on D wasn’t so bad either. Billy Smith is not talked about a lot but he always made the big saves when he had too. God I hated the Islanders and still do beginning in 81 after they knocked us off in 6.
Pouzar remains a favourite because of how he neutralized that psycho. Very good goalie, but back then I wanted him dealt with heh heh. Slashing Anderson was a step too far
Also a very nice man.
Met him once when we were both speakers at a corporate event in Whistler.
Had an opportunity to chat with him for about 15 minutes off stage.
Pretty sure you’re not supposed to talk about who you meet at meetings. Hence the anonymous in the name. Very believable though. I’m sure it’s true.
Gzowski’s The Game of Our Lives did a masterful job of capturing the first Islanders-Oilers playoff encounter in 1981, including this bit of lore: “Then, in the third period, a stirring thing happened: the Oilers began to sing. Mark Messier started it. Sitting on the bench, his stick clutched like a spear in his gloved hand, he began to chant, “Here we go Oilers, here we go.” Down the line, Kevin Lowe picked it up. Then Brackenbury. Then everyone else, and all through the arena, amid the din of the suburban Long Island crowd, you could hear them singing. “Here we go, Oilers, here we go.””
I do not wish to sound judgmental, but if you have not read The Game of Our Lives, your life has been empty and meaningless. In fact, read LT’s book too if you do not want to be a complete wastrel!
LT, I tried to post the link to your book and to Gzowski’s book (no bookcase is complete without them), but links seem to be an issue with posting.
Agree on Walman – not sure why the coach does this.
Really looking forward to getting both Walman and Regula in the lineup at the same time – that may never happen….
Yes Walman will play on a weekend. We are just not sure which month!
— Everybody’ working for the Weekend.
— Everybody needs a little romance…
— You want to be in the show, baby let’s go!
Prospectaganza!
Tommy Lafreniere needs to stop, drop and roll because he is on fire. (Fitting for a Blazer.) He has four goals and a helper his last two games, and another chance to torch opposing goalies (and open nets) arrives tonight in West Man.
Michigan is on a wave of mutilation as the only team in Div-1 with a 4-0 record. As a result, they have jumped five spots to #4 in the nation. Park and Barnett are stuck at a goal and an assist respectively though.
Fischer is off to a decent start as a junior with a goal and an assist in two conference games.
Michigan (Park, Barnett) @ 5 p.m.
Notre Dame (Fischer) @ 5 p.m.
Kamloops (Lafreniere) @ 6 p.m.
All times are two times and are also Wedgewood time.
