The Edmonton Oilers did something out of the ordinary yesterday, recalling rookie pro forward Connor Clattenburg. When an organization makes this kind of unusual transaction, we are left to figure out why.

- At home to: Avalanche, Blue Jackets (1-0-1) Actual 1-1-0
- On the road to: Flyers, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes (1-2-0) Actual 2-1-0
- On the road to: Sabres, Capitals, Lightning, Panthers (1-2-1) Actual 0-2-1
- At home to: Stars (1-0-0)
- On the road to: Kraken (0-0-1)
- Expected Record: 6-5-3, 15 points in 14 games
- Actual Record 4-5-2, 10 points in 11 games
- Season Record: 9-9-5, 23 points in 23 games
We knew it was going to be a tough month, and NHL opponents have delivered. The Oilers need to go 2-0-1 to match my prediction, that seems a little out there from this vantage point. The team is playing better.
A CONVERSATION
Connor Clattenburg is in the NHL! Yes he is. I don’t believe it will be a long stay.
Is that because you’re a dink? No, those two things are unrelated, although I can see why you might make the connection.
You never liked him! I don’t know him, impossible to like or dislike. I have seen him score goals that show good hands, I’ve seen him fight (and win) and I’ve seen him play with great energy.
What’s the problem, then? I think “problem” frames it incorrectly. On the face of it, this is a success story. Clattenburg was a fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL draft, and he’s going to play tonight. By any measure, this is good news.
He’s the first Oilers draft pick to make his NHL debut in years! Feels like it, but Shane Lachance played in his first NHL game a week ago for the New Jersey Devils. He was part of the cost in the Trent Frederic deal.
Why won’t he stay in the NHL for more than one game? He might, one never knows. Kelly Buchberger was a late draft pick and played in three playoff games during his rookie pro season. It does happen.
Why won’t he stay in the NHL for the rest of the season? The numbers suggest he is not NHL ready. In 15 games, Clattenburg has scored one goal and two points, and his even-strength goal share doesn’t compare well to other Condors forwards.

How do I know those numbers are accurate? Well I count them manually each game, so a mistake is possible. I’m comfortable with publishing them, but would of course recount if there’s a question about a player. The numbers make sense, though, it’s a giant leap from junior hockey to the AHL for most fifth-round picks who are age 20 in rookie pro seasons.
Why would the Oilers bring him up for one game? A few reasons.
Oh good, let me walk across the virtual library from the non-fiction to fiction section. Good idea.
What is the most likely reason? It’s old school, but this could be a “Sean Shanahan” moment. Stan Bowman’s Dad Scotty Bowman was part of that historic moment, and maybe Stan is taking a page from the old man.
What is the Sean Shanahan moment? Bowman coached the Habs to the 1973 Stanley Cup, but the Philadelphia Flyers won the two following championships. Bowman grew tired of the physical intimidation, and in a September 1975 preseason game dressed Shanahan and Glenn Goldup. He then put them on the ice with Doug Risebrough (a nasty piece of business and he was a fine player) along with Larry Robinson and Pierre Bouchard. Both defensemen were big and Robinson could fight. Legend has it the Canadiens won all five fights and put an end to the physical intimidation that allowed the Flyers to win those Stanleys.
You’re seriously suggesting a rookie is going to take on the Florida Panthers? No, but he can crash and bang and has an idea about how to fight. If Clattenburg upsets a few Panthers, that will have an impact. I doubt we see a line brawl, but Nurse and Frederic may fight tonight as well if my theory holds water.
What are your other theories? Well, sometimes a recall can serve as a distraction. This one might be the front end news that would ease the pain of the back end news. For instance, Jake Walman and Alec Regula were hurt in the last game. If we get some bad news on either today, or God forbd both, well Clattenburg’s recall served to give the fan base some sugar before the Cod Liver Oil.
Any other theories? A few. They include waking up the team, although that seems to have happened already. It’s also always a good idea to send a positive message to the minor-league players. If Clattenburg can be recalled, so can any of these players who are performing well. Finally, maybe he’s that rare player who the scouts missed for four rounds. The AHL numbers suggest he isn’t ready, but maybe he is ready.
When was the last time Edmonton recalled a player out of order like this? This is an unusual move for sure. I’ll pick Curtis Hamilton, April 9, 2015. He had his best AHL season that year but the team wouldn’t bring him back for the following campaign. Hamilton took a five-minute penalty on (I recall) his first shift and damn near got thrown out. He ended up hitting a few people. I suspect Clattenburg will also hit a few people this evening.
Aside from not being NHL ready what do you think of him. In my article at The Athletic (here) up today I wrote “it would also be hyperbole to suggest Clattenburg is without talent, or that he’s not a true prospect. He can skate, has good hands and is fearless. He does need experience in the AHL.”

Willing to bet no Mikko “In the Numbers” Rantanen vs. Edmonton on Tuesday.
I believe he absolutely should be suspended, especially after his hit vs the Isles earlier this week, but I never count the league out when it comes to making the worst choice for player safety so unfortunately I would probably take that bet haha.
24’ My son (21now) moved back from NB. Got him established,

25’ Stacked all identifiers 4 NFL. Same method here from 05+
Established key crirical ones for every pos. Important to know NHL, NBA, Soccer compressed areas also compress cause of nets.
NFLs score area is a line across whole feild.
Slightly diff methodology.
Really only started watching 40 min gms this yr (have all open shots & key chance Open/closed SH)
Pts over gms then lowest gm played then highest RegW establish correct standings.
Edm is #25in league.
See Muti references saying Edm does not have a 26 1st, & Somevsay they do.
Dors anyone know?
Got it top 12 protected so each correct!
Summarizing!
Barnett picked up a brace of apples.
Park scored on the PP for his 4th of the season.
Berry and Lafreniere each garnered an assist.
Lewandowski was not permitted tasty soup.
Prospecting takes a break until Wodin’s Day.
Bouch and Ek each +5 with 3 pts.
That’s some rapid regression
Jones knocks down a clearing attempt at the line, takes a few steps in a rips the 2-0 home.
Where are you watching the AHL games through?
He is subscribed to AHL TV, it is the first menu option at http://www.theahi.com
Correct – its on Flohockey.
Condors’ top line tenacious in battle in the offensive zone – Howard with a nice cross-ice pass to Samanski who hold, drops to Howard in motion, a nice look back to Stilman who rips home the 1-0.
Howard and Samanski with the assists.
Is it possible that Clattenburg was called up so these forwards could continue to get some time together in Bako?
I don’t think so – Clattenburg has been on the 4th line with two of Petrov, D’Amato, Copponi, Kepen most nights.
Clatty did just fine tonight.
A touch under six minutes and I only recall one shift where they were hemmed a bit. Wasn’t able to get any bangs in but he didn’t run around trying to find them (which he does almost ever shift at the AHL level – clearly the coaches spoke to him about that).
A couple puck plays in the offensive zone (the 2 on 1 included).
This first 25 games (apx) has NOT been pretty and it has not been great but this team, despite not playing near their potential, as many individuals and as groups, has survived.
The quality of comp hasn’t been horrid but the schedule is about as hard to this point of the season as one can get.
They just came out of a 7-game (12 days) easter road trip with half the points.
They are currently in a stretch of 11 games with travel between each of them.
They have played 16 home games and 8 at home. They have played 12 games in the eastern time zone and 8 games at home.
The last two games on the state of Florida have been much more committed to the style they need to play – they ran out of gas in both but they will soon recover and are now playing they way they need to.
Miles to go but they are set up just fine to climb.
Bravo Oilers!
This has been way more committed team play the last few games. It’s like they need to have their backs against the wall before they wake-up. I’m glad K.K seems to be rolling the lines without pounding
Enjoyable game to watch. Oil get a much needed win against a tough opponent and Knobs gets a lifeline. Popcorn was good too.
That was a progress game for many reasons.
Every team is going to have chances in a 3rd period down by 1, but this time Edmonton didn’t get completely owned.
The caveat, of course, is that for this to be a progress game they are going to have to string some wins together. Tall task against a Dallas team that will be coming in 8-2 in its last 10, then SEA-MIN-SEA-WPG gauntlet. The Seattle games have big standings potential with 8 pt swing potential
just stopped in to say Woohoo for the win!
Bonus for the evening, Leafs losing to Habs.
Stu stole another game
He needs to tighten up his boot straps if he wants to be a average Goalie. The Average Joe line is .896 he’s batting .885 after tonight
You are correct, he has to do his part. But so does the team in front of him. Our team’s overall defence allows one of the most slot shots and high-grade shots in front of our goalies in the whole league. Team defence and awareness need to improve. When we tighten that up, it will help too.
Bobrovsky is 0.887 after last night’s game.
Pickard is 0.851!!!
Stolarz is 0.884
Anderson is 0.883
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is 0.881
Binnington is 0.880
Gibson is 0.870
Markstrom is 0.864
The Hab’s goalies are 0.852 & 0.838
The Canadian Olympic team goaltenders will be completely different from the 4 Nations roster…
Oilers needed that game for sure. 3-point nights for both Bouch and the Viking too.
Bouch’s impact on the game is still so underrated due to his off games. He was an offensive dynamo tonight and strong on defense too. That was playoff Bouch
He loves playing the Panthers.
Nothing like the Florida rats to bring the best in the Oil. Not a full 60 but a very hard fought win.
Feels like a season saving win.
.500 on the road trip from hell. Not a complete 60 minutes, but by God, was that needed
#NeverInDoubt
I like that they are still attacking. Good on Mangi, Jan, Clat and Emby. No crap
Who cares Jack?!?!
Can that be his new Handle?
Good idea. Fitting.
I am reallystarting to hate him and Louie. Totally biased. Screw these two.
Frederic and Savoie have had terrific games tonight. Good sign. Savoie has had a major impact on the game
Agree… felt like tonight we saw the Fredric we have waited too long to see… maybe he will earn his contracted $$ after all. One game, long ways to go, but hopefully promise is revealing it self.
Don’t worry, he’s got 620 more games to figure it out
Frederic doesn’t have to do the heavy lifting by himself now that Clattenburg has arrived. Bowman knows this after seeing his Coach basically feeding him to the beast Olivier. Not every job is pencil pushing skilled work somebody has to do the shit work that many people take for granted.
I have to give Skinner credit for a great third period. Huge, much needed win.
A great game, period. .921 and faced most of those shots in the first 2 periods.
If he can stop 9 out of every 10 shots, the Oilers will win most of the time. He just hasn’t been able to do it this year yet
Sadly, I don’t think he has it in him to do this as a starter. He is a Dubnyk-style project, and if we could have him as a 1B for 1B dollars (essentially what he currently makes), then he could take all the time he needs to grow in Edmonton. I just don’t see it any more
Most goalies have not as league average save percentage is quite a few points below .900 (at least as of a week ago or so).
Florida such a bunch of true rats
Of course Maurice sends Greer out with less than a minute left.
Knoblauch could’ve handled that earlier via deployment of his new weapon.
Give K.K 10 more years of Coaching he’ll learn it takes every trick in the book to win. Maurice played the Refs like fiddles the last 2 years
Good for Savoie
Like how Savoie knows the net
Suck it, Fl•rida men.
Yes Savoie. It must be said that Skinner with some big saves in this third period. Skinner better than Bob in this game doesn’t go unnoticed, at least by this fan!
Too bad we can’t flip this game with game 7 2 years ago or how about game 6 last year lol.
Can only move forward, not back
Nice pass Janny!
Yup
Atta boy Savoie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeeeeehaaaaaaa
Get Clattenburg out there for the next empty netter.
Jack sounds disappointed.
Jack Michaels with ‘here come the champions’. Seriously? Wtf?
Don’t we have recall legislation in Alberta?????? I vote for Jack returning to Alaska!
Worst ever for the Oilers. I’m sure he’s an amazing guy, but it’s not the point
WTF kind of home team broadcast shows that set of clips right now?? I can’t wait for AI-casts of hockey games.
And Jack says “Here come the champions” Brutal
We should really get a campaign going to fire him.
Absolutely!
cant stand him and louie is becoming an idiot. let him godo color for his kid in vancouver. any place but here.
It would be a great time for a breathing room goal. They’re battling though, great sign these last two games.
Good time for Skinner to finally have a puck stick to him.
Why can’t Stuart catch the puck all of a sudden?
Frederic line looking much better. Hyman influence.
Quite the flying back check hit by 97! Grimacing on the bench after though.
Podkolzin slowly turning into another Hyman.
Yea I am liking him more all the time!
Great trade for a 4th Round pick. More moves like this please.
That drive to the net!
Couple of big saves by Skinner in the first 8 minutes 🤞
I’ll give him due here as well.
I’m sure he knows he has two goals to make up for.
when did Kulak last win a battle???
Last spring????
Certainly feels that way
Should be said that Ros and his goals that were set up played exactly against Bob’s strengths. Got him moving and chased
Oilers backing in again.
The coaches need to have them protect themselves. Nobody gets heavy hit as much as the Oilers. Teams are coming for them
If they can’t get up for the panthers, after a day off and being east for a while, I think I’m right that they need a coach with more gravitas
This is the most engaged they have been for a while. Playing hard but making some
of the same mistakes. First period was great. Panthers punched back in second. Going to feel heavy legs in third.
They shouldn’t have heavy legs this game
By scheduling and especially opponent
Are you serious???? 3 games in 4 nights at end of 7 game road trip. No, they should be fresh as a daisy. Lol
Short travel and a day off. If you want to run with the best teams that’s how it goes, tough or not. But this is the panthers, how much motivation does a team need?
Better d last few shifts by Emberson and Nurse boxing out
Watching the panel breakdown the puck watching.. Nurse is notorious for this. How can he be so bad at basic defensive awareness at this stage of the game?
Pronger nails the problem. Playing Peewee level puck watching hockey. For goodness sakes coaches fix it
I don’t think it’s on coaches.
Can’t agree. If they want to keep their jobs that has to change
Bob has given and Skinner has taken to this point (to/from the other team, that is).
Skinner is definitely not the major reason that the lead has been cut to 1, he faced 19 shots that period.
pickard was shelled and allowed 1 last game in regulation. gotta keep it to 1 .
Wether or not Knobby likes to F bomb the locker room like Bruce Boudreau, his passiveness behind the bench is not what these Oilers need
I don’t care if it’s a scheduled loss (in which they acquitted well) I want to see some passion. They are passionate players, use it. Get fired up, in control, and lend energy
The players play the game, but it’s not like the coaches don’t have a role
Coach so sonambulist
Can’t blame the coach with the goaltending the Oilers have.
They sat back, again, and gave up goals
The Oilers are currently winning.
