Several of the men coached by Jay Woodcroft and Dave Manson in Bakersfield performed well for the big club just a few miles down the road (it’s actually four hours, I don’t understand California) from the arena where these men learned the pro game.
It was quite a contribution from former Condors. Skinner with the shutout, between 14 and 15 minutes on defense from each of Evan Bouchard, William Lagesson, Marcus Niemelainen and Philip Broberg and forwards Kailer Yamamoto, Ryan McLeod and Tyler Benson contributed. That’s eight men, eight graduate Condors, all contributing to a win.
You know, this is what it’s supposed to look like.

- Actual February results: 3-2-0, 6 points in 5 games
- Oilers in 2021-22: 25-18-3, 53 points in 46 games
The Oilers are currently in a playoff spot, and would finish with 94 points if the current success duplicates over 82 games. That would mean an opening round matchup with the Colorado Avalanche, a must to avoid. The record in the last 10, 7-2-1, is the No. 4 record in the entire NHL. The key for Woodcroft is riding this current wave until the Oilers are well clear of the California three.
GOALTENDERS
Stuart Skinner was strong early, when the Oilers appeared flat as a pancake. The HDSC (nine of 20 shots) added to the degree of difficulty, it was good to see him get his first shutout in the NHL, and he earned another start. He owns a .913 SP and leads the team in the category. You know, he’s waiver eligible next season, and has played in 13 games this season. Is giving him 12 of the last 35 doable? At 25 games we’d know enough about him to project into next season. I’m at a point where risking waivers in the fall isn’t an option. Would you deal him in the right deadline trade? I know he had an uneven junior career, but his last two AHL seasons have been solid to excellent. He’s making things interesting.
DEFENSE
The numbers here are stunning, just outstanding. Nurse-Barrie won the possession, goals and expected goals, Lagesson and Ceci didn’t score but didn’t give up one damned thing, and Broberg-Bouchard plus Niemelainen-Bouchard were also dominant along with getting goals on each unit. This is something. Music! Wow. Not sure what to say. Manson is clearly a witch, and these short passes, controlled breakouts and possession outlets and entries are all terrific. It’s a breath of fresh air.
One of the things we can look for with a new coach is line matching. Nurse played 10:57 at five-on-five against Timo Meier (7-7 shots), Broberg facing the Gadjovich-Pederson-Gregor line most often (4-3 shots against Gadjovich). One of the things seven defensemen does is camouflage weakness. I don’t know if it’s by design, and last night it was difficult to identify the weak link defensively (it was Niemenlainen according to five-on-five Corsi Rel) but everyone was well over 50 percent in possession on the night.
Darnell Nurse scored goal No. 50 for his NHL career last night, among Oilers blue (as Oilers) he trails Paul Coffey (209 goals), Charlie Huddy (81) and Kevin Lowe (74). Nurse was 0-6 in five-on-five goals in the final three games under Dave Tippett, and is 2-0 in the discipline under Woodcroft.
FORWARDS
Everything rhymed in San Jose, but the Nuge trio had a terrific night, scoring twice, all three men getting crooked numbers in the points column. I viewed the Ryan slotting as the weakest decision in Woodcroft’s lineup but last night he looked impressive. I thought everyone looked engaged and many more goals could have been scored (22 HDSC in all game states according to NST).
Connor McDavid was flying last night, could have posted five points if his linemates had better puck luck. He had four HDSC’s at five-on-five, as did Hyman, with Puljujarvi grabbing three. You might look at a line with 11 HDSC’s and one goal as frustrating, I’m just thrilled this trio is back together. Get McDavid the puck, go to the net with your stick on the ice.
A word about Warren Foegele. He’s going to land around 10 goals and 30 points, and maybe that isn’t enough but I think he’s a valuable player. His five-on-five on-ice goal differential is 19-29, but 4-5 in his most recent 10 games. If he can post 30 points on a third line (mostly) and something close to 50 percent goals five-on-five, then he can be effective. Foegele is 4-0 goals with Nuge in 41 minutes. Something brewing there.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN 1260. We dissect last night’s brilliant game and talk about tonight. Guests include Tyler Yaremchuk from Daily Faceoff and Oilers Nation, plus another edition of Al vs. Sal in Crossfire! (pew! pew!). I expect we’ll wake someone up in Los Angeles, too. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. See you on the radio!
The Golden Nugge is a favourite around here, but did you hear Smith in the post-game?
Nugget? For real?
Wow. What a game. And what a style of game to win.
Easily the WoodOil’s best effort. A different level of opponent in the Kings tonight and they held up, continuing to play that tight, smart game we saw in a half-dozen games last season. I’m loving it.
One of the best goals I’ve ever seen Nuge score. I personally don’t think sniper is his spirit-animal but that was a most impressive snipe. Credit where credit is due.
The times Yams was up on the first line today were spent getting eaten up by Anderson. Jay was quick to flip back and was rewarded with the goal.
Tyson Barrie had a phenomenal 3rd period. He started the play for the Yammer goal, and the one for the ENer. If he’s a different player under Charlie, I’m keeping him… *thinks* …I mean, yay trade value! lol Seriously though he’s making an argument for it. But we’ll see how he looks with a larger sample.
Nemo and Kane. Man. We might have got run out of the arena without those two tonight.
NHL goaltending. It’s an actual thing. Thank God. Because there’s still plenty of footage for Jay to cue up. That said, how many oddman rushes did the Oilers give up last night?
Two players I don’t think he’s quite unlocked yet: Pujo and Drai. Drai has seriously cut down on the dumbass passes these past couple of games, which is good but he’s looked out of sorts, uncomfortable, awkward… not sure what. Pujo roaming to the wrong side of the ice yet again had 97 incensed earlier in the game. Might have led to the switch with Yams, I dunno.
It’s late, more tomorrow. GNight
Love how evenly distributed the TOI was tonight (Shore excepted).
Byfield played all of 8 mins and change. Didn’t even realize he was in the game. He’d probably benefit from going down to the AHL.
I missed the reason why Benson was not in this one?
I know HH will update us in the morning (nope), but AVS lost.
Old man Pavelski taught them young whipper snappers a lesson tonight. He had 4 points in a 4-1 win bringing the 37 year old young guy to 51 points so far. But Nuge and Hyman are too old for long term deals.
9 of 10 forwards (Shore with 4 shifts doesn’t really count) with at least 1 point tonight.
Only about 10 minutes late with that comment.
Typed it before reading your post … my apologies Redbird62.
That was a very satisfying win. For me, felt like a play-off game… kinda was, we’re in 3rd place and back in a play-off position. Fell behind early, not for lack of effort, but then a strong recovery to take and keep the lead. No fake Bettman point awarded.
This group is making it very easy to cheer loudly and with pride again. Watching Kane pop that guy (cant remember who) square in the nose was nasty and wonderful all at once. We killed that penalty for him. And every time I see Niemelainen perform his best tank imitation, I gotta smile.
Feels good right now, please don’t let it stop.
Didn’t love the penalty, but loved the fact that the team looks more engaged. Kane doesn’t back down. He’s kinda what we all wish Kassian would be.
Niemelainen is taking ownership of the 3LD spot. Assuming Keith gets back, I’m not sure exactly what Holland would want to trade for at the deadline … the internal solutions are playing well.
Maybe sending Barrie out for a better fit at 3RD … but I don’t see an obvious dance partner for a trade like that.
Smith-Skinner looks like a decent tandem now, and there’s no obvious upgrade that doesn’t cost a lot in cap space, assets or both.
Great win tonight, but even if they had lost, that was a well played game all around. Amazing what a change behind the bench can do. This is an energized group with everyone making contributions. Bouchard, Broberg, Lagesson and Niemelainen. My goodness.
Good night Drew doughty. Congrats on losing your 1000th game ya rat fink.
Great player tho.
He was “gifted” the 3rd star tonight. Didn’t really feel it was deserved… he had 1 assist.
Well said.
Balanced effort for the Oilers forwards. They had 9 of 11 get at least 1 point. McLeod and Shore were held off the sheet, though in fairness to Shore he only played a total of 2 and a half minutes in 4 shifts (3 in the first, 1 early in the second).
Every forward but shore registered at least 1 shot as well and 10/13 had 2 or more. But man they got beat on a lot of faceoffs especially Nuge (1/9). McDavid managed 64% and Ryan won his only faceoff.
Should have given Ryan some of Nuge’s draws. Should/will be a perk of him at 3RW.
My goodness Shore grew those sideburns fast.
The first three Oiler goals were unicorns. Followed by EN goals. If we can get our PP up and running again, look out.
Solid, solid win. Took a beating and came out on top. Playoff hockey right there. I wasn’t so sure about Barrie with Nurse but he sure made the play when he needed to! Glad the fellas stuck to the game plan and we’re rewarded in the end. Growth game, for sure.
Onward and upward!
This game is gonna hurt at 06:30am but Totally worth it!!! 👊🏽
Goal/assist/face punch KO Kane. I’ll chalk up a Gordie Howe Hattie before they give his assist away!
I was waiting for the weaponized cap space but all I saw was tinfoil lids!
Holy crap I hate those helmets!
Is Smith or isn’t Smith a goaltender?
Just looked it up. He is.
Hard to tell, he won’t stay in the bloody net 😉
Could very well be, or he could be a Rover….hard to tell some nights 😁
Well may be dead cat bounce effect but this team really looks different. LA is a good team with big bodies and forechecks hard. Oilers bent a few times but didn’t break. Bring on the Ducks!!!
That should save Holland’s job ’til the morning at least
Another 2 points
Back to back road games in California and 2 regulation wins.
This was, not long ago, only in dreams.
. . . Now where is that hash pipe?
In the garage? Say it ain’t so….
Tight all the way, but so satisfying to dunk this team. Going way back to Doughty running Hall and refs all up in their bullshit.
Another first for Woody, great to see him fired up and undefeated against his mentor.
Eat shit LA! Scumbags!
That’s a huge win.
Taking 3rd in the Pacific from the Kings on the 2nd night of a B2B.
Oh boy that was a gutsy last 7 mins, or so. In a b2b no less. The Kings really leaned on them and they kept at it. Helluva pass by Leon.
Yup, ‘they kept at it’ is a great way to put it. They really did.
Nuggy! The 2022 Team MVP to this point.
BOOM! Kane with more gravy!
Phew! Very good 3rd period. Smith save was big. Excellent 2 points and finally back in playoffs.
Woody’s fired up nice to see. Barrie with the Paul Coffey poke check.
Good Gord, can’t the Oilers do anything easily?
The Oilers are not a small team anymore. Four players under 6′ tall. Four players under 190lbs.
Russell and Keith replaced with Broberg and Niemelainen….
Barrie with the pokecheck to spring the 2 on 1 – interesting deployment.
BOOM!!! Empty netter after a crazy 10 second goalmouth scramble!!!
Great play by Barrie. centre has to cover the shot but great play after to stop a sure goal
boo. YEAH.
Holy Hell!
Massive stops by Smith and then the ENG.
Smith was solid tonight.
He was god awful in the 1st period but somehow it was only 1 goal.
He was solid in the 2nd and very good in the 3rd – huge late.
The boards are pretty lively in that rink.
Debrusk I thought had a pretty good comment about it later, saying that you have to live with the bad but his puck handling is an overall net positive.
Smith made the stops needed to close out the game … that’s all you can ask for.
Got better as the game went on, yeah?
Wow – Mike Smith!
Great finish.
Now THAT was a gutsy effort.
You bet! Smith looked out of control in the first but he settled down and was very good last two periods. Good on him!
Dagger!!!!!!!!
It’s going to be a long 4 minutes…
And Kopitar in the picture, letting a 5 foot 8 guy loose? Don’t tell HH
Evander Kane buried the empty netter and also buried the chances of HH posting tonight.
Hiding under the next bridge.
Yamo from Dre for a Super bowl sizzler.
Gorgeous blonde in an Oiler jersey in another team’s barn. Gets me every time…
Funking finally Yammo!
That was really nice.
Dead Legs to Stone Hands. Back of the net!
Is there anything more pure than the joy on Yamamoto’s face when he scores? I think not.
I still remember that shocked smile after his first NHL goal.
https://youtu.be/ntkgGTCLRXI
Yamo with the miracle!
BOOM!!! Yammo with the dagger!!!
That felt Smithesque…the bad kind. lol
Take advantage of that broken stick.
Quick release by Kailer off a quick pass by Drai – Off a forecheck by Kane.
Yamo Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice pass by tired legs.
Yammer needed that real bad.
Heavy legs…..
Ice is tilting! (and not in a good way!)
Running around. Timeout?
Saved by the TV, but man the Oilers need a breather
Ya, Drai has the heavy legs (and mits) tonight….
Drai has been playing pretty poorly for a couple of months now frankly.
Cant recall too many games where I’ve been impressed and on the PP lately the play is dying on his stick.
But then he does that.
Mmmmm that’s some nice tasting crow right here yup 😉
When your getting double teamed it’s hard to look good.
If you are getting double teamed and are one of the best passers in the world, you should be able to create scoring chance after scoring chance.
Really
No?
Fire Holland tonight
Barrie is not a defenseman
Give it a rest dude. We know what you think about Holland. Banging that drum here won’t make it happen..
Fatigue setting in now.
