I owned a heavy jacket when I was 10. It wasn’t a coat, so I could run freely, and it wasn’t cumbersome so I could release my slap shot ala Frank Mahovlich. The night light outside our house was as bright as the lights at the Montreal Forum. My net was an old saw horse, the goalie two 10-gallon buckets that gave me fits. My brother would sometimes play, but being four years older, the games were not competitive. We had a dog, Zero, and he was a wild card. Sometimes he would block a shot, others he would steal the puck and run into the barn. Damn dog.
I would go outside to the driveway (this was 17 miles north of Maidstone, in rural SK in the early 1970’s; there were more coyotes than people) at 7am on Saturday and stay out until 10 on weeknights. I loved it. A few times it was so cold I had to come inside because my lungs didn’t have time to adjust to the cool weather before I started running about in the prairie darkness.
No one knew, and no one commented (our neighbour Keith Schwartz used to yell “he scores” from the road when he drove by, he was a helluva nice guy). I was always the Bruins because screw the Habs. I practiced my Bobby Orr shot from the point more than anything, and this fantasy hockey night was the best thing in my life from about age nine to 12.
I left the stick in the porch one day around the time I became a teenager and didn’t pick it up again. Nothing tragic or earth shattering, just other interests arriving at that time. Looking back, it was a lonely business in a lonely place in a lonely time. We moved from British Columbia when I was in Grade 4 (I was nine) and we didn’t know anyone, we lived in an isolated place and we didn’t own a snowmobile. Bikes in summer made it better, but the SK winters spent 17 miles north of Maidstone meant miles and miles of solo.
By 1975, we moved to town, and my brother moved away, I discovered real friendships (Terry Cole, Warren Ross) and eventually the power of money, motorized vehicles, demon liquor and the lush beauty of the opposite sex. I regret nothing.
I do drift back to those olden days sometimes. The snow was piled over my head during the heart of winter, we had several days from November to March where Bill Stewart (the school bus driver) would call the house and tell my Mom he wasn’t going to be driving out on the north road that day. Those were glorious days.
It begins again tonight. The Oilers and the Jets, two prairie teams with the same dream I had on that driveway 50 years ago: Winning Stanley. Godspeed men. The journey begins.

- Actual October results:
- Oilers in 2024-25:
I added two points from my look a week ago, having a better idea about Edmonton’s opponents in the month to come. I have the losses as tonight, Dallas, Carolina and Nashville. Oilers began last season at 2-7-1, the final game in that run a loss to the Predators (5-2 at Rogers). I have them going 7-3-0 to start this time, followed by a road loass to the upstart Nasvhille Cats.
It’s Game 1 and we’re on it today! Sports 1440 starting at noon. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal will pop in to help us preview tonight’s game. We’ll have the lines and pairings, even though you already know them, and the latest of Raphael Lavoie. MLB playoffs, NFL and CFL and whatever you’d like to discuss. I’m at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section here and on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly. We can be heard at sports1440.ca; iHeartRadio; Radioplayer Canada, we tweet out the show after it’s done and you can catch us on Apple and Spotify.
Is it just me or so the Oilers get blown out like this more often than other good teams? I feel like you can put the oilers down for 5-7 5+ goal losses a year, and I feel like the rest of the NHL’s elite teams don’t have this many stinkers this often. Maybe it’s confirmation bias, who knows
Ya, that was ugly. I won’t worry about it unless it continues.
In a losing effort, Day still made the OHL Save of the Night.
Yeah, I’m doubling down on Skinner being a mistake and old and slow in a hurry. Still hope I’m wrong….
Playoffs you need finishers not wannabes.

Pretty much matches the eye test. Lordy.
Here is part of a reply I made 2 days ago to a comment about what “going all in” looks like and Stanley expectations for this team. As you might expect, it wasn’t well received. Nothing I saw tonight changes that opinion. Let’s hope I’m wrong.
Woof. Stuart Campbell….
Is this what they mean by veteran savvy and best in class? I know, I know, you can never have too many veterans. Speaking of which, what is MAF doing these days?
“Don’t need any of those damn fast kids on this roster, what would Corey say? In the end old man strength will win the day”- Stanley Chiarelli.
Skinner had a terrible start last year as well. I don’t think Bowman will be as patient as Holland.
Look forward to LT blaming nurse instead of Stu tomorrow 🤙
You know it was game 1, right, and not the SCF?
Stuart skinner 5/16, .605 save percentage.
But yup go ahead and blame me 🤙
Stuart Skinner 3186/3507 .908 save percentage.
Calder finalist
Ed Chynoweth cup winner
Local product
Pretty cool stache
Alexandar Georgiev let in 5 goals on 16 shots tonight.
did his team win the game?
They just can’t put the puck in the net.
And their #1 goaltender can’t make a save. The first 12 minutes was great hockey by both sides, then it was like it was still preseason. I just watched the Flames come back and beat the Canucks 6-5 in OT. WTF.
At least it was 6-0 not 8-1 like last years season opener, so they’re getting better.
Lol. Calgary and Vancouver both getting points is the icing on the cake! Sheeeesh.
Well, so much for Hollybuck taking a leave of absence. I blew that call. What does Microsoft News know about sports? My bad.
LT you are a funny dude.
You’ll slow play your drinking buddies to troll the joint but if someone points out that Stu skinner is the biggest drag on the team you’ll ban them.
Enjoy being shocked next playoff run when he’s benched and Oiler fans are like well no duh?
Dear lord, what is your problem man?
If I made a blog post every day for 10 years, and had a good audience, and one person goes sour every game that’s lost, I would have canned that person long ago.
You do realize you can just, leave?
It’s all jest calm your tits 😎
Gas lighting is more accurate.
No not at all.
Stu got benched in the playoffs last year and LT was shocked when it happened.
He blamed the defense despite a sober look sorta, kinda maybe blaming bad goalie-ing?
LT is a media and and he knows what plays in Edmonton.
Stu couldn’t make a save when it mattered.
The rest of team was no better.
PP, PK, 5v5, all 4 lines and all 3 defence pairings.
Leon was wide open and fell flat on his face.
RNH lost his edges at least 3 times.
McDavid was invisible. So was Jeff Skinner.
Arvidsson couldn’t lift the puck over Hellebuyck into a wide open net.
Bouchard was a shinpad assassin.
Nurse and Emberson looked rough.
Just a bad night all around.
Normally enjoy your posts sir, I suggest going to bed.
Glad to see you Link 😉
I suppose 6-0 is better than 8-1 but, well, maybe not.
How about some statistical analysis tonight? I thought Jeff Skinner was pretty close to invisible out there. How much are they paying him for his past performances? What about that super speedy Corey Perry?
did you happen to notice the goaltending?
So, do you go back to Stu for next game or start Pickard? I think you ride Stu….
Stu for sure (although they are back to back so will split most likely).
Never should have taken him out tonight. Obviously needs more minutes to get up to speed. This is still preseason
Yeah, I’d go with Skinner. I’d also recall Noah Philp. The fourth line was good to my eye but speed was an issue at times.
On the bright side, we’re off to a better start than last year. We only lost 6-0 tonight.
Maybe this is just how SC finalists open their seasons
Honestly, it feels like it. They look a day late and a dollar short. Some of it is slow boots but there’s plenty that needs cleaning up just on the tape-to-tape passing.
100%. Passing was poor, and guys were not backchecking. Not giving Stu a pass, he was sharp on the first turnover by Bouch, but there were a couple he needed to have.
Going to disagree on the slow boots, St. Louis won the cup in 2019 and they had “slow boots” too. To me, that they are so out of synch it makes them look slow. That’s not to say they’re fast, but they they aren’t clicking at all.
This team is missing the speed it had last year, much of which was given away for free.
Didn’t the Panthers win?
Crushed my Bruins. It was (I think) 4-0 before I got to a television.
The Panthers won this season. Last season, in which they won the cup, they lost the first 2 games of the season. Shoutout by Minnesota and then lost 4-6 to Winnipeg. They went 4-3-1 in October, before going 10-4-1 in November.
Oilers had a decent roster turnover as well. May take some time.
Well, FLA lost their opener last season 2-0. Coming off a finals defeat.
Is that 2 for 2 by the Jets on the PP?
Edit: 2 for 3 – 33% is better than 0%.
Something absent from tonight’s game is that long flip pass from the defence that was utilized so effectively in the playoffs.
Lol Leon.
The Oilers are making a season full of embarrassing gaffes in one game.
The Hockey Gords are making sure that the Oilers learn humility early in the season.
Relax, they’ll be fine.
This team gets very arrogant. It’s like they didn’t realize they’re playing a very very good team tonight. The score looks deserved.
As our host suggested this was quite predictable.
Oilers often do this extended pre-season where the roster and pairings aren’t really figured out until game 10.
game 1-10 must not be worth the same as games 11-82
Kinda liking the McD, Drai together with Nuge and the new guys. Except for Nuge fumbling and bumbling, they look pretty good.
Might just be score effects, but the Oilers look like the much better team in the 3rd. Aside from the penalty call just now.
They do not look crisp. Passes are either behind or ahead of the intended target, guys falling down.
They’ve had chances but Hellybuck is dialed in and Skinner was not.
Another crappy start to the season.
The whole team looks flat tonight like you might expect for a preseason game.
The Jets are blocking shots like its game 7 of the Cup Finals.
Where is Cody Ceci!!!!!!!!
In Godot’s head
All the calls to waive Perry and Ryan and they are two of the top forwards tonight – limited minutes, should be playing more.
I concur.
I would consider a Connor Brown goal in the third a successful third. Like ok this stunk but it’s not ‘23.
My much too early assessment. Coach made a huge error by not giving the club (lines and defence) enough time to gel. Took too much time to assessing the new players. Yes, they need a save, but they are completely out of sync and I blame the coach. Getting blown out in your home opener is not how you show that you are ready. This has happened before and my PTSD is real. Nurse is still a bobble head boat anchor. He needs to find his nasty. Someone needs to inject some emotion. Not sure that player is on this version.of the team. Too much complacency from the cup run me thinks. Here is hoping they can find some life in the 3rd.
I really like Adam Lowry. He’s such a fun player to watch. I really don’t like watching Adam Lowry play the Oilers, though.
Sleepy Oilers will wake up at some point. After last season, I think it would take a lot of this to really rattle me. The boys will be fine. Even Stu. Especially with the money goalies are getting right now, I’ll take 2.6 million stew all day. And I think over the course of a season, that stew would reward me.
Best 3rd line center in the league. If only he had a bit more scoring touch. A very good checker with elite penalty killing skills and wins a good majority of dzone faceoffs. Not only that, he is big, strong, and will drop the gloves with anyone.
In the first intermission, when they showed Connor yelling in the dressing room my son said “geez, Connor. It’s only the first game”. We both laughed but now I’m actually hoping Connor is losing his shit in that room…
Losing is one thing. This is ridiculous.
Unacceptable…
That’s so awesome! Hilarious!
I’ll settle for 81-1
They should call it “goalie.”
Hellebuyck is pretty good.
This game feels both unbelievable and inevitable.
Darnell Nurse starts the year as the same boat anchor he was in the playoffs, barring one or two games. Sometimes seems like he doesn’t belong in the NHL, or at least on a regular pairing, and yet his contract means we need to play him in the top 4 for many more years.
Skinner’s lateral movement remains very, very poor.
The weak links are obvious and in important places.
I miss the shoulder dimples
Was really hoping to see Skinner win the mostly goalie battle, Winnipeg has some saves they shouldn’t have while the Oilers have had none.
Feels like a closer game then the score would suggest.
Early breakaway save by Skinner but other than that I don’t recall any.
My bad I missed an early minute due to a puppy celebrating his dinner, it’s a shame Stu didn’t have a few more.
Perhaps the pre season philosophy should be more focused on getting the NHL roster ready for the season and less on fringe player evaluation.
Clearly something is wrong with the way this organization prepares for the start of a season. They should be embarrassed to put this product on the ice for all the fans who’ve been waiting eagerly all off season to watch oilers hockey. I know they’ll turn it around and it’s going to be a great season, but come on boys.
McDavid played 5 games, pretty much all the other core players but Nurse played 4.
Especially considering the disappointment of Game 7. Oilers have invested in giving players all kinds of resources not previously available. I don’t know how one gets over a gigantic disappointment like that one in a small amount of time. I have tremendous sympathy for what it must have been for them to lose that game and series, and maybe this was going to happen no matter. I do think the lack of playing time for Nurse-Emberson and the late arrival of the final roster are contributors to this evening.
They looked old and slow. Maybe if they start taking their vitamins they can become more youthful by the end of the season.
Hard to disagree with the host’s take.
Just like last year, I see good things but the first descriptor that comes to mind is “off rhythm”.
25-14 shots and people want to blame anyone but Stuart Skinner!
hahahahahhaha
Final warning.
I’ll take the boot for the Oilers easily winning the Pacific, the West and the Cup.
Enjoy allowing Godot to spam the thread for seven months with Broberg 🤙
You don’t have to take the boot, you merely have to talk about other things. Criticizing Skinner isn’t off limits, making it your only subject is tiresome.
As for Godot, he brings multiple opinions on many subjects. I enjoy his posts as I enjoy yours.
Being a good Oiler fan means not allowing the team to get away with abysmal player management. Guys like Broberg and Holloway should have been secured. The money was there; the will was not. It is a shame.
What a poor showing in game 1.
Action Jackson is flying in Todd Nelson.
Might be time for another Connor McDavid profanity-laced tirade about waking up?
Is he talking to himself in the mirror this time … cause he’s been pretty invisible tonight?
Stuart Skinner sucks at hockey.
What a loser.
Comments like that only point to one loser.
My point is you’re better than that comment.
Your objection of Skinner has been duly noted.
Please move on. I don’t want to time you out, because timeouts are one year in length now. However, I will if you don’t move on.
The team was poor in front of him. Lots of superstars making million more couldn’t piss a drop tonight.
They should have a mercy rule and 3 points for a victory if you beat a team by 5 in the regular season. More drama in blowouts!
Paul Coffey’s defense!
I think it’s important to recognize it’s one game, AND that the defense has two new pieces. The second pairing played very little together in preseason. That pairing is 0-5 shots and 0-2 goals.
Needed more time.
On a bright note, Ryan and Perry look pretty good!
Not a great start to 2024/25 for an Oilers/49ers fan
Fire the coach, it worked last year
I like waiting for the commercial timeout over the kneejerk yank right after a goal.
well looks like at least one person prefers putting in a cold goalie.
Wasn’t me but maybe it depends on the scenario. If you think you can come back, yank him right after 4 because you’re hoping to send a message. After 5, you don’t think you are coming back, you’re focussed on how to best reset both goalies.
I don’t disagree, I was thinking more about in the context that KK did it.
Three season in a row where the L
is on Stuart Skinner. All the pressure and he shows up like a loser!
He loses them the Cup on a shit goal and he comes back to being a loser this year.
I want to believe but with Ceci and Broberg gone everyone is going to realize how much Stuart sucks!
Geez time for a mercy pull. Jets might get 10 tonight. Absolutely disgraceful performance by the home team.
I’m sure this is all Ceci fault
Nope this is on Josh Brown
