2019-20 Preseason Game 7: Oilers at Flames

It was my hope that the Edmonton Oilers would arrive at the final game of the preseason with the roster fairly set. Alas, it was not to be. I believe we know who is going to stay (give or take one or two) but the opening night lineup is some vague and even the lines are late coming into view. At least the defense is set. Probably.

LOWETIDE OPENING NIGHT PROJECTION (SEPT. 10)

  • Leon Draisaitl—Connor McDavid—Zack Kassian
  • James Neal—Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—Alex Chiasson
  • Jujhar Khaira—Riley Sheahan—Josh Archibald
  • Markus Granlund—Gaetan Haas—Sam Gagner
  • Joakim Nygard, Colby Cave
  • Darnell Nurse—Adam Larsson
  • Oscar Klefbom—Joel Persson
  • Kris Russell—Matt Benning
  • Caleb Jones
  • Mikko Koskinen (Mike Smith)

I posted these lines before training camp, looks like the lines will be different but most of the roster players are the same. The only one of my picks who won’t be on the opening night roster is Caleb Jones. There are several question marks (Granlund, Haas, Cave, Nygard) and of course Joel Persson is hurt.

POSSIBLE OPENING NIGHT ROSTER

  • Leon Draisaitl—Connor McDavid—Zack Kassian
  • Tomas Jurco—Ryan Nugent-Hopkins—James Neal
  • Jujhar Khaira—Riley Sheahan—Josh Archibald
  • Alex Chiasson—Gaetan Haas—Sam Gagner
  • Markus Granlund, Joakim Nygard
  • Darnell Nurse—Adam Larsson
  • Oscar Klefbom—Ethan Bear
  • Kris Russell—Matt Benning
  • William Lagesson
  • Mikko Koskinen (Mike Smith)
  • IR: Joel Persson

Coach Dave Tippett was looking at unicorns (centers three) yesterday in practice, I welcome it but also can’t see splitting up 97-29 and giving Nuge the No. 5 and No. 6 wingers in this group and expecting 50 points.

One of the things we should follow this year is the offensive output of Kailer Yamamoto, Tyler Benson and Cooper Marody. Coach Tippett is trying to find goals among the roster players in Edmonton, and maybe he uncovers a gem. The kids on the farm can win the day by filling the nets in California. Kirill Maksimov had a tremendous game, scoring two SH goals. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here but that was a damned exciting start to preseason in the AHL!

KEN HOLLAND AND WAIVERS

I don’t think the Oilers will claim Tristan Jarry or Eric Comrie, but it’s worth considering. Those two names haven’t yet appeared on the waiver wire but something’s gotta give in the coming days.

The Leafs are placing Pontus Aberg, Tyler Gaudet, Ben Harpur and Jordan Schmaltz on waivers today at 10am our time. Schmaltz is a first-round pick by St. Louis in 2012, he’s a bigger man with good offensive and puck moving ability. Oilers don’t need him but he could be plucked off waivers by an NHL team.

I think Holland would love a scoring winger or a RH center, sometimes manna falls from heaven this time of year. Chris Kunitz was on waivers once upon a time, it can happen. Stay tuned.

Only preseason but the BAK is stacked.

That pass to Max for the SH goal by “No Hands” McLeod was sublime.

Here’s how you play: Guess how many points the Oilers get in the regular season.

    That’s it!

Tie break: How many regular season goals does JP score for his new Finnish team?

  3. Bling says:

You wonder if guys like Maksimov and McLeod will have easier an easier transition to the pros based on their quality two way play and skating.

These guys aren’t Rob Schremp and Peter Sarno.

  4. Jethro Tull says:

Pontus Aberg on waivers, eh? Fancy that. Of only he was played with McDavid as a pump and dump.

  5. drglen says:

I’m with you in having Haas making the team.

Gagner in line on 4th line is an interesting prediction and probably right. He can be moved to the PB without much fuss, .. Nygg can rotate in..

Burdy can be extended on PTO for practices only for a couple weeks if hes’ into it.. . never know, injuries happen too. He could also have a monster game tonight.

Kass can move up and down, CHais can move up and down, Neal can move around, Jurco can move around.. .. it could be a very fluid lineup.

  6. Woogie63 says:

We know what we are going to get from Gagner, Granlund and Cave.

Pick your choice for the 13 and 14 forward, move the other guy to the AHL team and don’t look back.

  7. OriginalPouzar says:

This is it – Nygard, Haas, Burdasov, Granlund, Lagesson – you want to not only be on the team but be in the opening night lineup, you best make a material positive impact tonight.

Will McDavid play? I kind of doubt it but maybe.’

Will we see three centers and, if so, more importantly, will we see that on Wed?

All summer Tippett has talked about McDavid/Drai and Nuge/Neal as pairs, maybe its Jurco/McDavid/Neal?

Come on Mikko, give the fans some real confidence!

  8. Jethro Tull says:

    This just in:

If you pick better players and play them and get rid of the crappy players, you stand a better chance of winning.

Are you referring to any roster moves specifically, or are you just shaking your fist at the sky?

  11. Durag says:

    Claim Pontus!!

  12. Bauer83 says:

    94 pts 8 goals

  13. OriginalPouzar says:

From watching Yamamoto’s progression to be an elite AHL player in his 27 games last year, a true driver of offensive scoring chances, I have full confidence that he will produce at a PPG pace (give or take) this season (as he would have last year) and will then put himself in the conversation for the Oilers top or middle six next season – maybe a cup of coffee this season but we’ll see how it goes.

2 SH goals for Maksimov last night.

Currie and Joe G. with beat downs.

Benson with some filthy sauce set up.

    Sammy on the scoresheet!

Great exhibition game for the Condors last night.

  14. Pescador says:

Cave is a replacement level player who should be put on waivers in my opinion. The other two are at least NHL players.

  17. Jethro Tull says:

Pescador: Are you referring to any roster moves specifically, or are you just shaking your fist at the sky?

Well, it’s my fist and the sky is largely public domain, so…..

The (I read it here, can’t remember whom) “Sea of Sheahans” is why the roster isn’t set. Most teams have, at most, a couple of jobs on the bubble.

We have literally one player who is a lock for his position; Connor McDavid, #1 center.

    We’re NOT sure who:
    Starts in net.
    Top D pairing
    2nd D pairing
    3rd D pairing
    #7 D
    McDavid’s wingers
    2nd Line
    Entire Bottom six
Who took the last cup of coffee and didn’t put a fresh pot on and left their dirty dishes in the sink.

Now, the actual results of the preseason games are irrelevant, largely, but those guys never like to lose.

I think Dave has been trying to sift through what he’s been given. I just hope he gets a few nice presents from Ken next off-season.

  18. OriginalPouzar says:

To follow up on a conversation from last night, I’m somewhat confident that the players in the AHL get nutrition and fitness training and consulting and I would guess training in those area are also part of development camp, etc.

It would seem that seeing a legit NHL top 6 d-man, a man in his early 30s making $5.5M putting in a level of work and decication to get back to the best league in the world – has a material impact as well.

  19. chrisco stu says:

Think there’s still an old school element in the Flames organization (Lucic trade etc) and I have no doubt that they took the wrong lessons from the Bruins Blues Cup Final.

    Good, gooood.

They didn’t lose in the playoffs due to “lack of toughness”.

Let them go after unskilled goons. They’ll have to bank heavily on Gio being ageless and Gaudreau and Monahan dominating.

  24. dustrock says:

    Jethro Tull,

I agree. Too many bottom 6 contracts handed out. We all knew on this blog Nygard, Haas et al wouldn’t be competing for top 6 spots.

I’d prefer to keep the faster and slightly more skilled guys in Haas and Nygard. Hard to argue with Cave’s work ethic but I agree with LT, he has hands of stone. Granlund shouldn’t have been given a deal in the first place but as a UFA signing he’s making the team.

My feeling is that generally this approach doesn’t work well.

  28. drglen says:

For sure. Get him while we can. Guys like that aren’t put on waivers very often. This could be our only chance to get a 1RW for free…

  33. Stud Muffin says:

Nic Petan is a guy I’m looking at who could hit waivers, that’s a player who has more offence to give imo.

  34. drglen says:

I’m waiting for winter tires… so watching Dynamo Moscow vs SKA ( St. Petersberg) ..

Anton Belov is D for SKA.. Yakupov is on this team. On powerplay, but nobody will pass to him.. but it seems that he’s just standing still sort of in the slot, at a distance where if someone passed to him, it would be checked or turned over… .

Jori Lehtera still playing. David Rundblad, got in some NHL years with ottaw, phoenix, and chicago.

SKA up 3 1 pretty good hockey. edit they win 4-1

say, in KHL.. the players line up and shake hands at center ice after every game. There’s something cool about that.

  35. drglen says:

    blainer,

Gagne’s play has not deserved demotion in any way, Granland .. nobody even knows about. I think they’re going to give them 5-8 games to play their way off the roster. Gagne will accept NBA style ‘rest days’.. also.

  36. drglen says:

    Jethro Tull,

lol…. very good.. very good. Two free coffees for you this morning… .. too fast for me ha ha

  37. drglen says:

    Jethro Tull,

yes, especially when we played his pool barbeque party friends in LA.. … no doubt he’s tough, but I seem to recall him going after the wrong players, at nothing times in the game, for no purpose at all, .. having done nothing earlier in the game when his presence was needed.

Neal for Lucic is 8 more points in the standings, … say you score on 1 of 10 fast breakouts ( ok made that up) .. so instead of 82 games where Lucic kills 5 fast breakouts so they don’t happen.. this year.. those breakouts will actually happen.. say 5 more times a game.. ( Ok maybe 4 because of Chris Russell).. anyway.. ah.. er.. thats 1 extra goal every two games…. I’m going to say that’s worth 6 points to 8 points in the standings. winning close games that Lucic would have lost for us. There ya go, can’t argue with hard science.

Back to hockey (and music and whisky) talk!

Jethro Tull: Sorry, it was a very bad Latin joke, the root of bridge is pontum.

Hey, it was a good joke! Or at least I was enough of a nerd to laugh. 🙂

Now to be even a little more nerdy:

The Latin root for bridge is pons (nominative), pontis (genetive), not pontum, and the name Pontus is likely from the Greek pontos, which is the word for sea and also a Greek god.

But I still think the joke works, even if stretched.

  59. yeraslob says:

    drglen,

I’m glad to hear. Kind of had a bad feeling about him when I heard reports of his personality and pims. The Oilers need to stay away from anyone who could be a drag emotionally given this team’s historic emotional fragility. Need more Andreescu types who have the mental toughness to remain positive in the hard times.

I also like Five Finger Death Punch’s version of House of the Rising Sun. Absolutely stupid, stupid, stupid, video for the first 3 minutes. Really nice vocals on that song. That’s a good singer there.

But Gagner was fourth on the Oilers in P/60 last year – yes, he only played 300 minutes but this player can still produce 40 points.

He also produced with almost no 5 on 5 time with McDavid – 30 minutes

In that time without McDavid, he also had a 50% goal share.

I don’t love Sam Gagner but he is a positive player on this team, isn’t he?

  65. drglen says:

ya well hendrix has a similar vocal delivery in some ways, but he can actually sing. In addition to being a great musician, he was a really really good musician.. sound in the other little things.

For sure.. I’ts a tough veteran division…. properly utilized I see Gagne as even to plus, can suprise on second PP unit, and can play up if unexpected injury happens mid game or road trip. To put it another way.. look around the league .. castoff, etc.. you would not find a Gagne Like player near as good as the real Gagne.

I will cut and paste from last year – “The roster is rubbish. Put me down for 82 points please.” Unlike last year, JP – 99 goals (I don’t know and don’t care).

This sounds like a follow-up to my comment on Bear and Sekera. Didn’t notice follow up comments but glad if it generated discussion. Anyways they may be able to access that if they seek it out, but I’m guessing the AHL resources are pretty limited, and even if they are there it wouldn’t be unlike a young guy to dismiss it. For whatever reason, seeing Sekera made it “click” for Bear, according to Bear. And I do remember rumblings about his fitness being subpar in past years, so it all adds up.

And well, Sakic didn’t poke Rantanen in the eye like Dubas did to Marner when he paid both Tavares and Matthews, and then begged for a discount.

Rantanen didn’t have that leverage over Sakic.

However, Marner will likely be worth it, and Dubas probably has to shop Captain Underpants,

    Georgexs,

Thanks for the reply yesterday. I have also appreciated your research posted on this forum, which is why I responded to your thoughts on Klefbom.

I used Corsica.hockey to look at all the defenceman seasons played since 13-14. Klefbom alone has six, thus the higher 69 total. Looking at Tampa, out of 57, Hedman seasons rank 3, 10, 11, 19, 26 and 30. In LA, out of 58, Doughty’s rank 3, 9, 21, 31, 38 and 46 (18-19). Ok, he’s not the best in the NHL, but I think a team’s best defenceman’s numbers tend to track their team. Klefbom’s numbers are the Oiler’s numbers.

Thanks also for the notes on line stability. Cause and effect are very tough to pull apart, but I think the finding at least begs the question of whether changing things up really helps losing teams. I like the unicorns model partly because I think they would be easier to keep stable through injuries and slumps

Streetheart’s cover of Tin Soldier is pretty good too. Although I do prefer the original.

Some covers are (obviously) much more popular than the original… This Flight Tonight is probably the most famous example. And not the only time it has happened to poor Joni. Blinded by the Light falls in this category too.

But also Black Magic Woman, which many don’t know—at least on this side of the pond—was originally a Fleetwood Mac song.

Venus by The Bangles, Red Red Wine, Tainted Love, and I Love Rock and Roll are also rarely known to be covers.

Nice breakout pass to Nygard on that last sequence, though.

If we’re talking about great cover songs, I’ll throw out any Led Zeppelin song performed by Heart. Ann Wilson does Robert Plant as well as Robert Plant. You Tube it.

I don’t mind Nurse taking a piece out of Frolik after that bad hit on Drai earlier. Well worth the two minutes.

I think the Oilers have played well tonight. They just don’t have the horses on offence. Goaltending has been the difference for the Flames really.

I think the defence has played really well tonight. I like Nurses game. Bear has been terrific IMO other than the one play against Bennett.

It’s very unlikely the Oil make the playoffs this year. When virtually every winger on your team is a tweener, what can you really expect.

If Bear or one of the other kids can somehow fill the gaping hole at 2 RD, this will be a major victory for the team and set them up for success in the future. Fingers crossed.

It’s going to come down to coaching IMO.

They show the ability to dominate possession, but not generate quality scoring chances. If the coaches can’t get the team on the same page, with passion, we know the result.

Nurse and Benning from what I’ve watched (not the whole game) are struggling. Larsson as well. Granlund hasn’t a clue. Haas is too passive for the NHL at this point.

Kassian doesn’t have the O chops for top 6 at this point – like others chances are there, can’t finish. Of course that is the hardest part.

Bear has won himself a spot outplaying the vets IMO.

I do like the fast players brought in. Even if they can’t score it really reduces sorties against and that helps a lot, because they can get into the line of play. The slow trains chase and it’s too late. Nygaard isn’t helping moving to the O zone but he gets into it heading back. Man is he quick.

    Baby steps.

Or any Willie Dixon song covered by Led Zeppelin,
