The Edmonton Oilers are 4-0-0 to start the season and have enjoyed great scoring success in the early days of 2021-22. Edmonton leads the league in goals (tied with Florida, 18). The discussion we had all summer, about forwards driving play, seems to be carrying the day.
It’s miles too early to make any sweeping statements, but the verbal is going to build around some of Ken Holland’s summer moves if things continue in a good direction. Last night, Warren Foegele and Zach Hyman helped carry the load and the Oilers left for Vegas looking like a contender for the division crown. We’ll know more later tonight.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER
- At home to: VCR, CAL, ANA (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 3-0-0)
- On the road to: ARI, VEG (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- At home to: PHI (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: VCR (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 5-2-0, 10 points in seven games
- Actual results: 4-0-0, eight points in four games
The Oilers have delivered strong starts before and faded, but this team isn’t running a hot goaltender and the four wins delivered included many repeatable pieces. This isn’t the “McDavid scores and Talbot saves” Oilers, there are multiple scoring options and the team is +6 in goal share (excluding EN goals).
Including all goals, the Oilers are 18-10 after four games, hockey-reference tells us the average NHL team (after four games) has scored 11-11.
GOALIES
Mikko Koskinen stopped 25 of 26, .962 and is 2-0-0 on the season. His save percentage for the year is .957 and you should expect regression. I still think he’s as good a bet on any given night as Mike Smith. Stuart Skinner was the backup, we’ll find out later today how Dave Tippett will handle the Vegas game. My guess? Koskinen.
DEFENSE (five on five)
Darnell Nurse-Tyson Barrie played 17:55, going 8-7 shots and 1-1 goals. Nurse skated miles, blocked some shots, flattened a few townsfolk, shot the puck in to good retrieval spots. Solid on the PK. Barrie picked up a couple assists and was solid with the puck save for an errant pass that began the sequence that led to the Coyotes goal. Pairing looked much better than Saturday, big test tonight.
Duncan Keith-Cody Ceci played 16:33, going 8-9 shots and no goals. Keith had four shots on goal, two takeaways and plenty of time on the PK. Seems to be settling in. Ceci led Oilers defensemen in PK toi, couple of shots on goal and a few shots at the opposition. Ceci had one HDSC. So far this season at five on five, the tandem has played 60 minutes, 28-29 shots and 3-2 goals. Remember, we promised each other 200 minutes at five on five before making any kind of statements. So we’re 30 percent of the way. Stay the course!
Slater Koekkoek-Evan Bouchard played 12:07, going 8-7 shots and 1-0 goals. Koekkoek made a couple of fine outlet passes and offered support defensively. Bouchard got an assist on the first goal, along with a takeaway, several sublime passes and four shots on goal. I don’t think there’s a high chance he plays with Nurse tonight, but one never knows.
LINES
Nuge-Leon Draisaitl-Kailer Yamamoto played 11:43, going 4-6 shots and no goals. Decidedly uninspired effort, although there were some individual moments of note. Nuge’s pass to McDavid for a power-play goal was outstanding, he now has six on the season. His shorthanded area bounce pass on the Hyman goal was also fabulous and he did have a great individual chance. Leon Draisaitl had a great chance down low but was quieter than normal (did manage some good passes that didn’t cash). Yamamoto drew a penalty, two shots and a takeaway. The line needs a spark.
Zach Hyman-Connor McDavid-Jesse Puljujarvi played 11:21, going 6-1 shots and 0-1 goals. I thought the trio had lots of jump but had some vapor lock (the goal against came on a turnover by Tyson Barrie followed by some scrambled looking defense the coach will want to review). Hyman had two HDSC’s at five on five, scored twice on the power play and did Hyman things on the regular. McDavid’s stick is now Thor’s hammer, as he once again had a multiple goal night (2-1-3) overall. His stats are four games, 6-5-11. Man. Puljujarvi made a nice play on a McDavid goal, passing off and then driving to the net for what looked like an uncalled pick play. Had a HDSC, worked well with McDavid and tried like hell to get onside during one sequence where McDavid was winding up for a big moment. Line looks good. The five on five goal came with Leon replacing Hyman.
Warren Foegele-Derek Ryan-Zack Kassian played 11:03, going 6-4 shots and 1-0 goals. This line is an instant fan favourite and for good reason. Foegele’s first period goal was skill and effort, and he is 1-2-3 after four games on the No. 3 line. Derek Ryan played well, stymied progress and played a responsible game. Kassian had an assist on the Foegele goal, had five hits and added 14 minutes in penalties. He must have seen Sceviour’s quick start in that category and felt the urge to get it all back in one night.
Brendan Perlini-Devin Shore-Kyle Turris played 7:30, going 4-3 shots and no goals. Perlini had a shot on goal and got pucks deep, suspect he’ll play tonight and maybe we see a tweak next week against Philly. Shore won a lot of faceoffs and was effective on the penalty kill. Turris had one HDSC, two shots, two takeaways and drew a penalty. Might have been his best game as an Oiler.
YAMAMOTO
The young winger is coming up on 50 minutes at five on five without a point, Zach Hyman is 47:28 without a point in the same game state but is part of the power play and has cashed shorthanded. Hyman is 0-4 and Yamamoto 0-3 in on-ice goal differential at five on five.
What to do? Coach Tippett has options, but the third line is playing so well and he’ll want to give Hyman some time with McDavid on this road trip. Clock is ticking for young Yamamoto, but I’m hopeful Tippett sticks with him. Nuge could use some five on five success too, maybe it happens tonight.
LOWDOWN WITH LOWETIDE
At 10 this morning, TSN1260, we kickstart the weekend with a parade of cool guests. Steve Lansky from Inside the Truck podcast will pop in at 10:20 to talk about the Oilers, the Canadiens and MLB’s playoff coverage. At 10:40, Jonathan Von Tobel, host of The Edge and Senior NBA Analyst for VSIN, will pop in for our first look at the NBA season. Matthew Iwanyk has done an exceptional job getting the word out on the two Canadian Men’s Soccer games at Commonwealth in November (v. Mexico and Costa Rica), we’ll talk to Matt about his impact when using his powers for good. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter. Friday!!!!
If Keith, Ceci, and at least one of the goalies are what they appear to be so far, do we get the balance photo, LT? I don’t know that teams get much more balanced than that; I don’t know that we have a single player, other than perhaps Yamamoto (and Barrie, to the extent that he’s not replaced on the first pairing by Bouchard), playing higher in the lineup than they should be.
not sure you could get more balanced in the salary cap era
Agreed, but I think the policy was we would only get the balance photo for opening night. Le sigh.
The hockey gods looked at the the Knights’ atrociously ugly helmets and said ‘no way are you going to win tonight’.
There are currently 6 Oilers in the top 25 NHL points race (Yeah sure 20 players are all tied for 25th, but Kassian is one of them). Early days, but McDavid and Leon would appear to have a little extra help so far this season.
Calgary Puck is too stunned to respond tonight. Not worth a look
They’re just numbed by the Oilers from up Highway 2
Hunter1909 Death March™ Update:
Long time Top Player and former Champion Yeti with a 169 point prediction leads the current 164 points possible Oilers predictions.
Congratulations, Yeti!
thank you for your cooperation
Kassian tied with Lindholm in goals for the team lead in Calgary.
A well deserved 4 days off and some “team building” in Vegas. Now, Connor, Leon, Jesse, Darnell and I’ll add Zack H. for Stauff – don’t forget about the drug testing in February!
have you been to Vegas OP? seems like your scene
I have been to Vegas 13 times but not for a decade.
Considering I haven’t had a drink or a drug since August 16, 2012, nope, definitely not my scene any more.
No one needs to worry about HH if Oilers start to dominate in the West.
He’s already lined up Florida for the finals, and of course 2X champion Tampa is like his ace in the hole right up until the cup is won/lost.
You really have to hand it to him for strategy.
OK Oilers are for real…
BRING ON THE… er… sharks?
Crazy small sample size, but it really feels like we have… 2 skilled scoring lines, another scoring line that plays hard-hockey, and a 4th line that works hard, checks and does it’s job. Man it feels good. So far so good, my lordy we’re 5 & oh!
GO OILERS GO!!!
Btw, I’m loving these games broadcast in 4K. Amazing colour & picture sharpness… perfect for these old eyes.
Ryan – 1 goal
Foegele – 1 goal
Kassian – 3 goals
Yes, I know one Kass goal had Nuge as the center on the linechange and one was a PP but the 3rd line players are on pace for 82 goals.
I don’t imagine that holds but if they can keep up even 3/4 of his pace (60 goal pace for the threesome)….
It would be interesting to see some stats of if 3rd/4th liners score a high (25-50) % of their goals|points in unusual/spot circumstances; I reckon it would be.
Nurse and Bouchard, 21 and 19 minutes at 5 on 5, and zero HDCA for either – per NST.
Not to nitpick, but 20:51 and 19:51, just one minute apart in 5v5 TOI.
Also, Bouchard a shade over 24 minutes overall.
Holland and Tippett both said he’d push up, but I am very impressed.
A very impressive stat. I thought Nurse was just a beast out there, bossing the ice. Evan – maybe he really is from Heaven. A hard fought victory against a good team. Still can’t believe the pass from Keith and the cool Kass finish.
I know he took the minor tonight but it really is amazing how few penalties Nurse takes given how he plays.
Off to CP. Their salty tears should bring much mirth.
Omg are they ever salty! Gotta add a barrel of vinegar to even out the amount of salt they pour into Messier’s bag of Chips.
one poster literally just posted that he hates the oilers more than anything in the world and that all fans of the Oilers or McDavid are the “lowest people of society” and “any parent who raises their kids to be fans of them has failed as a parent”.
They also said and I quote:
“I would rather deny the COVID vaccine and vote for Larry Heather than support the Edmonton Oilers.”
That is ALOT of hate and negativity towards millions of people for literally no reason at all. If a sports team and their fans are causing you that much stress and anxiety, then they should not be watching sports at all.
Shout out to Nurse-Bouchard. Yeah, wow.
Great game. Happy for kosk but sheesh I haven’t seen a goalie w less authority or faith in his glove hand in awhile.
lol don’t downvote this YOU KNOW ITS TRUE heh
hope Koskinen can be a solid 1A for this year, playoffs
Kudos to Mikko Koskinen for a great 51 hours and 2.5 games of tending.
The team needed him and he was there for them.
Interesting Keith got a star. I thought that pair had one of their weaker games so far.
All the same, 5-0 baby!!
Has Kass every had this rate of production away from McDavid as an Oiler? Good stuff.
*selects one random statement he has made about Kassian in the past year, dips it in ketchup, eats it*
More please!
I’m going to name Koskinen:
“Chef”
..after the tiger challenged character in Apocalypse Now! who never, ever should get out of the boat(goal crease).
With approx 1:10 left Chef leave his crease as shaky as anything, then he sent it right to a Vegas player and could have got an assist on the tying goal. He played great tonight, also.
My thoughts entirely.
side note: those Vegas red 3rd jerseys are horrible (saw them in the stands)
5-0 to start the season
who’da thunk it..?
woot..!!
Kick the knights when theyre down…this is a huge 8 point lead.
Great to get that roll (slide) into the net.
That’s a damn nice game. Vegas missing a few players, but that’s the team everyone’s expecting to finish ahead of the Oilers. Oilers also on their 3rd in 4 nights.
Strong games from the (new!) top pair, and top 2 lines.
Tippett with a Fuk Yeah smile.
Approx 1:40 left and Bouchard lobs the puck in a beautiful arc right over the Vegas team, landing like a meterorite near Centre ice, and wasting over 30 seconds off of the clock.
That was Guy Lapointe like.
The Habs probably would trade their entire defence for Bouchard today
Koskinen has to stop going outside his crease.
Nobody could platoon with Mike Smith for two years without being inspired to become a better puck handler. I do think Mikko has improved a lot, but if I was coaching against him I’d tell my lads to pressure him hard every time he plays the puck.
Big W.
VGK are such a good team positionally, gonna be great when their top players get back.
Draisaitl is the new Archibald!
Your commentary is outstanding
wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot..!!!!
Yea Drai Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5-0 BABY!
YES!
10 points banked!
Poor decision by Nurse on that play that led to, yet another, icing.
My goodness, that play by Keith – after digging that puck out of the scum, his backhand off the glass was like inches below the top – great play – so close to being out of play for a penalty.
Cool to see the 4th line in the rotation through the 3rd period. Guess they’re the only ones who are fresh. Still, good for Tippett.
Nurse: “There are less than 5 minutes left in the game. Just lose, and none of you will get hurt”.
Miscommunication there leads to an icing by McDavid.
No harm yet but another defensive zone draw coming up… they haven’t cleared yet.
There is no hockey player on earth to have defending an icing than McDavid.
Take a look at Calgary Puck and see how bitter he makes those poor Miracle Red Milers, or whatever they call themselves.
Wow Bouchard cool as a cucumber out there!!!!
Foegele and his forechecking – my goodness.
There are multiple moments per game where only the 7 on his back is visible and I think he’s McDavid.
He can sure skate, that’s for sure.
Smart play by Bouch. Takes what Vegas gives, doesn’t fire it deep into the o-zone, picks a spot for the shot. Every time he has the puck he’s thinking fast.
Nurse looks at the Vegas players and dares them to try anything.
Its like he stayed out of trouble before this contract, and now is more his ideal self lol
8 minutes left, leading by 1 and 4th line shift – full 4th line – awesome!
Good to see Patrick back.
Why do these 2 minutes seem like 20?????
Haven’t checked the total ice time yet, but Leon is really being leaned on. Of course, he was on the 5 on 3 but he’s on for more PK time now.
4 days off, go for it.
Just a reminder of how Drai can do everything.
The Kass giveth and the Kass taketh…
That was…..the definition of a chintzy call.
Koski, not feeling great..
And the refs manage the game again, the gut he was tangled with wasn’t the nearest pursuer
LOL Kassian looks just like the cartoon in the penalty box
That was not a penalty at all.
But what a burst of speed by Foegle, that was impressive.
If anyone didn’t believe in game management, that sequence is all you need
