The hockey history involving the Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers began in the 1980 playoffs. Philly swept the Oilers, who took two games to OT, the final one double overtime before Ken Linseman sent the Oilers to their summer. Behn Wilson scored a big goal in that game.
In 1985, Edmonton beat the Flyers 4-1 in the Stanley Cup Final, with Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey scoring 11 points in the five games, and Grant Fuhr (.902) outdueling Pelle Lindbergh (.885) and Bob Froese (.845).
The best Oilers team of my lifetime, and the best SCF involving the Oilers in my lifetime, was 1987. Seven games, 4-3 Edmonton, I didn’t breathe until Glenn Anderson’s goal in G7. Fuhr (.917) was brilliant, Ron Hextall (.903) was out of his mind and damn near robbed Edmonton of Stanley. Gretzky, Coffey, Kurri, Messier, Lowe, Huddy, Gregg, Nilsson, MacTavish, Pouzar, Ruotsalinen, Smith, Hunter, this was the pinnacle.
In life, true greatness arrives only by overcoming giant obstacles. Lore arrives only after difficult and memorable battles. Hextall, Mark Howe, Brian Propp, Brad McCrimmon, Pelle Eklund, Murray Craven, Doug Crossman, Brad Marsh, Peter Zezel, Scott Mellanby.
Of all my cherished memories of the 1980’s Oilers, at the very top is the 1987 team. A big reason for it was the formidable Flyers, champions in their own right, victors without a title.
Respect the Flyers. Always.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER
- At home to: VCR, CAL, ANA (Expected 2-1-0) (Actual 3-0-0)
- On the road to: ARI, VEG (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 2-0-0)
- At home to: PHI (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- On the road to: VCR (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 5-2-0, 10 points in seven games
- Actual results: 5-0-0, 10 points in five games
The Flyers play in the Metro division, eight teams who have all done well enough in the season’s early days to post more points than games played. By winning percentage, Philadelphia is sixth in the Metro and by goal differential fourth in the division. Flyers are 12-7 five on five goals (Edmonton 11-10) and 5-4 special teams (9-2 Edmonton). In all disciplines, Philly is 18-12 (+6) and Edmonton is 23-13 (+10). The Flyers will score tonight, based on their first four games. They’ll also take penalties, 16 minutes a night so far this year.
At the end of training camp and preseason, we spent a little time reviewing the priorities for the season. Edmonton needed three outscoring lines and a fourth one that didn’t give up too much. All of this at five on five. Well, a 5-0-0 record obscures a lot of things, but the five on five numbers are on the good side of the ledger. The expected goals, something we’ll get into today, are also solid.
OILERS POSSIBLE LINEUP TONIGHT, EXPECTED GOALS PCT FIVE ON FIVE
- Zack Hyman [53.2]-Connor McDavid [52.5]-Jesse Puljujarvi [53.9]
- Nuge [53.0]-Leon Draisaitl [50.6]-Kailer Yamamoto [50.2]
- Warren Foegele [57.7]-Derek Ryan [59.8]-Zack Kassian [55.0]
- Brendan Perlini [41.5]-Devin Shore [45.0]-Kyle Turris [36.5]
- Tyler Benson [54.2]-Ryan McLeod [21.8]-Colton Sceviour [61.9]
Expected goals is a newer innovation that uses ‘sequences’ to award specific positive contributions to chances, and then gives those chances a certain weight or quality (ala Puck IQ) to reward the truly majestic. You can read about it here. Edmonton’s first five games give the team a very good look, especially among the top nine forwards. Look at the Finn! Now the defense.
- Darnell Nurse [54.4]-Evan Bouchard [65.1]
- Duncan Keith [56.1]-Cody Ceci [55.1]
- Slater Koekkoek [45.0]-Tyson Barrie [40.9]
- Kris Russell [45.4]
These are Natural Stat Trick expected goals, and it shows the top-four as listed (and as we’ll see tonight) in a positive light. That isn’t the same as saying this is a Stanley Cup defense, but the top two pairs have been on the good side of events through five games.
Notable items are Tyson Barrie’s early struggles, and his move down the depth chart. I’d suggest he will improve his number as the days go down, the third pairing is going to be the reason Edmonton makes a trade for a defenseman at the deadline (barring injury).
One area I wanted to mention surrounds Kris Russell. Although the veteran is criticized heavily, his five on five goals-against 60 is often the best on the team. Here are his numbers through the years:
- 2016-17: 1.68 (Best)
- 2017-18: 2.67 (Fourth among regulars)
- 2018-19: 2.30 (Second among regulars)
- 2019-20: 1.62 (Best)
- 2020-21: 1.83 (Best)
- 2021-22: 2.60 (Fourth among regulars)
Duncan Keith and Tyson Barrie are both over 3.00 on the current Oilers, but Russell’s competition (Slater Koekkoek) for that third pairing left-side job is running at 1.99-60 goals against five on five. We’re looking at extremely small samples, and I believe Russell will get back into the lineup, but that’s a stat to watch. If Koekkoek, who was a team worst 3.66 GA-60 five on five a year ago, can sustain a strong number it could force Russell to the sidelines when men like Markus Niemelainen and Dmitri Samorukov earn recall.

What’s the Cole’s notes on the playoff format in 1980 that allowed the Oilers to play the Flyers before the finals? Was there no Smythe Division/Campbell conference format yet? When did things start to look like they did in the early 90s?
At the time it was simply teams 1-16 that made the playoffs. No divisions, and only a western and eastern conference, but that didn’t matter for playoffs.
1981 had the legendary story of the oilers beating the Canadiens in a best of 3 series in round one, only to lose to the Islanders (!) in round 2
Lol, remember when Chris Kunitz got a gold medal because Sid hates Claude.
Flyers are a team I decided to watch this year for some reason. Their games have definitely been entertaining but nasty.
As long as no one gets seriously injured I’d bet on our powerplay taking this game down.
I used to play outdoor hockey at the Community League rink in Westmount, and on Oilers game nights the rink rat would have Rod Phillips voice booming out the radio while we skated.
Oilers and Flyers had a back-and-forth tilt (I’m going to say this way around 1991 or 1992), and the game was tied late in the third. The Oilers got a late one (maybe overtime). Rod was his usual ebullient self. A win over the Flyers on a dark winter night under the lights of the outdoor rink. Some memories never leave you.
This is probably the night: Edmonton Oilers at Philadelphia Flyers Box Score — January 13, 1991 | Hockey-Reference.com
Tied 2-2 going into the 3rd, Flyers take a lead but the Oilers tied and eventually won on an Esa Tikkenen goal. The boxscore states that Bill Ranford stood on his head, as he often did.
Respect the Flyers , always . Well said . It should be a great challenge tonight for the boys Hope they are up to the task .
Just a thought . But I wonder if it might be a good idea to try Bouchard with Keith for a spell, Keith’s experience could be very valuable for Bouchard especially as a partner on the ice . I realize they probably don’t want to split up the (Keith – Ceci) pair while they are still adjusting to each other as a pair . I’d like to see how a (Nurse – Ceci) pairing would look too . Definitely not tonight or while the team is on an undefeated streak . Anyway it would be something I would look forward to . Meanwhile , I’ll just shut up ..
From Cult of Hockey, relaying Reid Wilkins comments from Oilers practise today:
Hyman-McDavid-Puljujarvi
RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Foegele-Ryan-Kassian
Perlini-Shore-Turris
Benson, Sceviour
Nurse-Bouchard
Keith-Ceci
Koekkoek-Barrie
Russell
Koskinen Skinner
Dropping Benson, Sceviour and Russell is likely to be the starting line-up.

This is also a good read on the effectiveness of the Oilers power play so far.
I’m liking the 4th line it would be nice if they get minutes, I guess it all depends on the Zebras. I’m calling it first this line scores a goal.
Sometimes great careers, at least for me, fall under the radar.
Loved Scott Mellanby.
Had no idea he played 21 seasons!
Played in 2 games in the 1985/86 season and then finished up
in Atlanta in 2007.
But, check out his last 4 years of points.
57 points in 2003
31 points in 2004
34 points in 2006
36 points in 2007 ( he turned 40)
As a frame of reference, Ryan Smyth, Peter Sykora and Ales Hemsky
tied for the Oilers point scored with 53 points in 2007.
( though Smyth only played 53 games with us )
What an amazing career of solid production for Mellanby.
Great time to ask this question: Was I the only person who had an Oilers Jersey with “Mellanby and #27 on the back? I loved the guy, so my dad (also an Oilers fan) got me the jersey for Christmas.
That was a tough one he was traded for Kurri plus he had Semenko’s old number. He was a fine player hard not to like him he always got his noise dirty to make plays. He played like it was his last shift in the NHL for 2 decades.
He was a fine Oiler also .
Why was his time with the Oilers so short?
He came to the Oil in a 3-way trade that saw Jari Kurri end up with the Kings. Mellanby should’ve been a fixture on our second line but I believe we lost him to expansion. How come other teams surrendered nothing players to Florida and Ottawa and we lost Mellanby and MacIver?
If memory serves me correctly, he injured his wrist in a fight at a bar in Edmonton while with the Oilers. I think it affected him for the rest of his career. I may be totally misremembering this though.
I was surprised by this in Dom’s article: “The much-maligned second pair of Duncan Keith and Cody Ceci has been surprisingly excellent with an expected goals percentage of 59 percent.” I hadn’t heard anyone this positive about Keith and Ceci.
200 minute warning. There shall be no discussion regarding Keith-Ceci until we reach that mark.
I was also a bit surprised by this. I have quite liked Keith and Ceci, but I wouldn’t say they have been excellent.
Dom’s analysis is some of my favorite, but I think this comment shows some of the limitations of going off of expected goals percentage only. We’ve already seen that duo out for a few meh goals, with some running around moments mixed in.
It’s a small gripe, but it’s a lack of nuance that comes by not watching the full game, I think.
Much *wrongly* maligned.
When we beat philly in 87 they were missing their big man 6’4’’ 235 Tim Kerr who scored 58 goals ( nice hands) and was unmovable in front of the net especially on the P.P. When we got up 3-1 in games most of us thought we had it in the bag. L.T is right about the entire City of Edmonton and surrounding areas not exhaling until Anderson slapper from far out beating a unbeatable Hextall.
When we beat philly in 87 they were missing
No, they were most certainly there.
Philly can score and can score in bundles.
Farabee has one heck of a shot.
The team better tighten up for tonights game.
We got a break in that Ellis is out today
But what drives my gears is ESPN+ is not showing games on Wedn.
I guess that’s the split in rights with TSN.
SO I can’t watch the game tonight.

The game is being broadcast on TNT in the US.
I think that is why it is not available on ESPN+.
So it’s going to be a blow out!?
Oy! I am sure it will be a dynamite game!

Randle’s 32 Thoughts (having forgotten the first 30):
Will Boston implement a Kucherov this year; Signing Rask to a contract one day after the regular season ends?
There are a lot of Dmen in Bakersfield right now. Can one or two of them be packaged with Kris Russell to bring back a legit 3LD at the deadline?
Rask said he’s not looking for $$ and would be cheap to sign.
Boston has 876K in projected cap space [source capfriendly]
He could take a league minimum 1yr contract, or actually, it would be a higher contract that is cap compliant but is amortizes over the rest of the season but pays him a higher rate per game played.
Will be interesting. If Ullmark and Swayman are playing well, then idk why Boston would sign Rask.
He said he wouldn’t play anywhere else but Boston, but if Edm came knocking?
Time will tell. It’s something to monitor.
I believe for Rask to be eligible to play in the playoffs, he would have to sign with a team (Boston) by the trade deadline (March 21). If he signs after that, he can still play for the rest of the regular season, but that is all. So the signing team would have to have the cap room for his salary for the final 1/3 of the regular season. Maybe they try really pushing the loophole, if necessary, sign him and immediately put him on LTIR till the end of the season. However, according to Capfriendly, the Bruins are currently projected to have $4.3 million of deadline cap space, so they may have room to sign him anyway. Edmonton is projected to have only $1.3 million deadline cap space.
I wonder if the rules have changed at all. As I can remember a contract signed after the trade deadline needs to pass through waivers? I am pretty sure if a player is not on the roster by the start of the playoffs then he is not eligible to play.
excess packaging not required…the answer my friend is the weak link at 3RD.
It seems like forever since we played a game. I hope they are well-rested and ready to get back to the hard difficult grind.
From Reddit, Bouch gets a haircut (Jesse is hilarious)
LMAO
Bouch trying to look under 40!
Jesse snapped a picture 30 minutes later….. Evan Bouchard…. Full beard.
Now that he’s a mainstay he doesn’t have to look like a older vet to get past Holland and Tippett for playing time. Instead of watching reruns of the Brady Bunch gang in Hotel rooms he’s actually being developed on a cheap contract. We sure could of used a player like him against the Jets. Evan might of been the tipping point of getting past the pesky Jets.
Bison n’ Bouch.
Jesse’s IPhone… Priceless!!!

76% expected goals for, so, there’s a real chance for the Oilers to nab some SHG this evening.
SHG…… Yamamoto!

.
(but really…Hyman) 🙂
I’m very hopeful that tonight is Kailer’s night. Let’s GO!
Had to look thrice at the 3rd line expected goals. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
So this is how democracy dies…

Some McDavid and Bouchard in Dom’s 16 stats:
https://theathletic.com/2915918/2021/10/27/16-stats-seattles-start-bouchards-breakthrough-and-marners-misery/
Somewhere among these 8 men there lies a 4th line.
What is it?
My guess is
Holloway Shore Archibald
b/w his myacarditis and his vaccination status impeding cross-border travel,
I don’t see Archie in the lineup.
How do you contribute in the playoffs in our standard format 2-2-1-1-1.
Benson-Holloway-Sceviour
I was concerned about the pk coming into the season and I know it’s early but Bouchards 3.4 pkGA/60 on the top unit is a ridiculous number. Close second on team to Nurses 3.3
Evan form Heaven
I thought you were going to wait 200 minutes 🙂
Also, great write up.
haha … zing! 🙂
Dom Is singing Bouchards praises on the Athletic
Now if we can just get Corey Pronman onboard.
That is impossible
I just wanted to say the blog is running very smoothly recently. Thank you for your work.
Power outage on Vancouver Island.
Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Ron Hextall played 92 game that season and had 100+ penalty minutes… and we thought Smith played with intensity!
If Russell plays he almost instantly becomes the favourite to lead the league in blocked shots… something I value highly, not at the expense of losing of course, but it’s a tough position that he has mastered that part of the game.
Man, these prove your human math questions to enter the site are getting harder.
Also, Condors play tonight. I doubt Samorukov plays if he just joined the team yesterday but maybe and, in any event, we likely see him Friday afternoon or Saturday.
The Condors have ALOT of d-men.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN OCTOBER:
10 Points in 4 games? Now that’s production!
I can copy/paste, but editing? Nah. 🙂
You think we don’t read the fine print?? 😉
It’s the prove your human math question I’m sure…
Oddly enough, it really does feel like 10 points in 4 games
It’s a sequence.
I’m laughing.
“Of all my cherished memories of the 1980’s Oilers, at the very top is the 1987 team. A big reason for it was the formidable Flyers, champions in their own right, victors without a title.
Respect the Flyers. Always.”
These are the lines we come here for…marvellous!
Always?…. Broad Street Bully’s…. Dave “The Hammer” Schultz?…
Broad street bullies had 2 cups and threatened a 3rd. Never take the Flyers lightly. Always respect the Flyers.
The overall 5 on 5 goals numbers are OK (not great) – they understate what the expected numbers say.
The thing to realize, for me, is that neither Leon Draisaitl nor Connor McDavid have come close to their best game at evens. These lines can, and will, dominate offensively to a greater degree.
Its nice to play some different teams, I mean, I can’t remember the last time the Oilers played the Flyers.
Flyers Beware: Connor McDavid is a different player than last time you played him.
“The thing to realize, for me, is that neither Leon Draisaitl nor Connor McDavid have come close to their best game at evens. These lines can, and will, dominate offensively to a greater degree.”
Is that the Cup winning strategy?
“Continue to think like you’ve always thought;
You’ll continue to get what you’ve always got.
Is it enough?”
I agree that 3rd pairing is something to watch. Is it possible that Koekkoek’s numbers are inflated by spending most of his time with Bouchard? That kid can defend.
There is no doubt that Russell has been able to prevent goals over the years – I am started to get concern with age-regression – he’s turning 35 and there are alot of miles on that body.
Keith/Ceci – those numbers sparkle when you did deeper and realize they have 8% offensive zone starts (not including on the the fly) and high defensive zone starts (triple Bouchard, double Nurse)
Who knew that Bouchard could defend ?
