Dylan Holloway’s final NCAA season inspired comparisons to NHL forwards like Martin Havlat and Roope Hintz, and that’s a very nice neighbourhood. His injury over the last number of months, and surgeries, meant discussing this player and his possible future had to be placed in stasis.
Yesterday, he hit the ice for Oilers practice and we can resume discussion about the talented young forward and his career.

DRAFT PICKS NHLE
The players at 40 or more (Savoie, Petrov, Bourgault, last season Holloway) have to be considered legit NHL prospects who could see time on NHL skill lines. Petrov is younger and is in his rookie OHL season, so in some ways his resume is stronger than Bourgault, who owns the higher draft pedigree. Savoie continues to trend well and frankly I can’t tell you the name of the best future player in this group. It’s an impressive collection of offensive talents with some range (especially Holloway and Bourgault) of skills.
Holloway is both coming off injury and the closest name to the NHL. The NHLE estimated goals in each man’s most recent season: Savoie (29), Bourgault (21), Petrov (17), Holloway (13).
Tyler Tullio is interesting, because he projects as a middle-six forward but the offense is a little better than that for this player. It’s easy to get fooled in year one and two after a draft when a player remains in junior, but Tullio is absolutely a prospect with real value.
Berezkin and Denezhkin are interesting players, both are NHL prospects in my opinion. I’d like to see both signed in time for next season.
CONDORS NHLE
I’ve watched a lot of Condors games (some of you have watched more) and after a time you notice players who exceed the math. I think Phil Kemp might be that kind of player. Markus Niemelainen may also be one, but we didn’t really know what he was until the big Finn arrived here last season.
Philip Broberg is going to play in the NHL but based on what we’ve seen so far, he’s going to bring more offense and less defense than the scouting reports implied. That’s not a statement of fact, more an observation of a subject we’ve been monitoring delivering evidence that doesn’t quite fit the template provided by scouting reports. It happened with Oscar Klefbom, too.
Raphael Lavoie is scoring goals more rapidly now, and they’re goal-scorers goals, the kind Scott Wheeler told us about at The Athletic in his excellent profile on this player several years ago.
MARODY
If the Oilers are looking for a right-winger with skill playing well enough for recall, it’s Cooper Marody. A young man who has been NHL-ready since 2018-19, Marody is 5-4-9 in his five most recent games.
For his AHL career (153 games), he is averaging 2.43 shots per game and a 15.3 shooting percentage.
Coach Dave Tippett likes to run Jesse Puljujarvi on the McDavid line, Kailer Yamamoto with the Draisaitl line, with Zack Kassian, Colton Sceviour and Kyle Turris also spending time there.
Yamamoto is in Covid protocol and Kassian would be the top candidate to move up. Marody is extremely unlikely to see a feature role, but time on the McLeod or Ryan lines also gets him into the NHL and matriculating as an NHL player.
Even if it’s only building trade value for the deadline, a 10-game audition would benefit both player and team. It’s also possible he’s an actual NHL player. I wrote about Marody in September.
So how would we feel if E Kane gets terminated and ends up in Calgary or LA or Minnesota for 1M?
We would feel just fine as it would only be a matter of time before the next episode.

Why is this down voted and red flagged? I legit said “Holy Cow” when I read this this morning. I want to know the legit interesting things happening around the NHL. There’s only so much print that can be put to mock lines and mock trades.
You see downvotes but they mean nothing (I never “vote” plus or minus) but I don’t think you can tell if any post has been “flagged”, can you?
No I don’t believe so. Not until it disappears. It takes more than one red flag too.
knighttown:
All posts show the red flag. It’s where one could click to flag a post if they wanted to.
As others have said, if a post is flagged multiple times then it isn’t visible any more (i guess it’s still visible for LT and can be re-instated if he wishes, but I don’t know the details or how many flags it takes for a post to disappear).
Since theoretically its possible to still talk hockey without the Oilers since they’re basically under wraps lol
I’m going to settle down to enjoy the Detroit game which features a pair of players 19 and 20 years old who both are supposed to be looking like Calder candidates.
sigh where are the Oilers calder candidates…its not like this team is a set entity so much as in the slightest way as proved by the Jekyll and Hyde season to date.
Screw that. LAK look like a 1940s American football team with those helmets and if that’s not bad enough they play NHL hockey like its rugby.
When do the Oilers play next?
2nd intermission of the Leafs/Avs game with Jeff Marek and Elliote Friedman

Marek on the Klingberg trade request
‘Klingberg throwing a little cold water on the trade request- his agent (Peter Wallen) did confirm a trade was requested when talks (about an extension) reached an impasse in late Nov early Dec’
“If we can’t get together on an extension, can you please grant my client a trade”…Marek then left it up to the viewer to determine if this is a ‘hard trade request”
Apparently Klingberg is looking for 8 years/$63 million

Friedman on Evander Kane waivers/termination of contract
“with the support of the NHL, the Sharks are alleging that Kane (who tested positive for Covid 19 on Dec 21) made a flight to Vancouver on Dec 29- and they (San Jose) are saying Kane didn’t have medical clearance to take that flight” (This is being disputed by Kane’s camp)
“Also, and that he was supposed to return to San Jose (the Barrucuda’s) on Dec 31, and he did not come back until Jan 6 (this too, is being disputed)
-The NHLPA has said it will appeal if he clears waivers
-Kane’s agent has said they will appeal
“We’ll have to see where this goes in terms of an arbitrator and what he/she would decide to rule”…”but this story isn’t over, no matter what happens tomorrow…there is going to be a legal fight coming out of this”
“I do believe there are teams that will want to sign him…I do believe there is legit interest out there”
Friedman also mentioned that all parties will have to agree on a process, because in theory Kane could sign another contract, win a grievance, and have 2 NHL contracts
Thanks for this, Gerta. I saw it but was going back and forth with the football.
You’re welcome
It took a bit of time (rewind the PVR, type the quotes into a notepad, edit until it’s legible)
I hope/think? I got the quotes attributed correctly..I tried to make sure it reads how the parties intended it to
I thought it was relevant to today’s thread
Seeing how this is really a Oilers hockey discussion I am left wondering about what might happen if, say, Tippett’s Oilers lose the next 4 out of 5 games and Cup winning Torts gets the replacement gig.
For one thing a Tampa Bay vs Oilers Finals would be a hoot.
Trading Broberg or any of the top prospects for a quick fix guarantees Oilers eternal status as an accursed franchise.
This is correct.
Depends on the quick fix I guess.
There is no quick fix.
Agreed x10
LT (and/or Ryan): The MO of the poster who trolls Oilers fans on the Sportsnet comment board, posing as a flames fan, is to have many accounts at his disposal. With all these accounts, he then flags comments he either doesn’t like or don’t fit his narrative, thereby “editing” the comment board.
I’m assuming Sportsnet is automated and all it takes is a certain number of flags to delete a comment. It doesn’t sound like that’s the case here with actual admins, so…
Just something to keep in mind going forward.
No love for a block option? Let each of us decide which posts we want to read? It’s easier to ignore someone if we can just flat out block him/her.
My two cents.

Dear Rondo,

Apparently, Klingberg wants out of Dallas. If there’s a rental target that assets need to be spent on, this is the one I’d go after. Not sure the price tag, but I would think it takes a 1st, Barrie, Sammy, and another piece. I doubt Dal wants Barrie though…my guess is they’d want Broberg. But that’s too much for a rental on an expiring contract, so how do we make the money work?
Adding Klingberg and E. Kane (for a cheap 2 year contract as mentioned below) really gives this team a different look. I think Kane gives the team an edge we’re missing, and a proven sniper for a bargain price. At this point, we should take the risk and just hope he gets his head out of his ass. Klingberg is a big upgrade on D and creates a good looking top pair.
Moving the Barrie contract and acquiring Klingberg would be a massive plus (even if Klinberg is just a rental).
Getting Klingberg and Holtby would be sublime but, of course, very expensive (including the price to open up cap space).
reason he’s available is rumored to be he wants a long term top contract. Which I wouldn’t do especially that he’s on IR about as much as Taylor Hall
and that’s fair – of course, there is value in the rental….
E Kane is a loser.
Navy SEALs will dismiss candidates who are high on skill but low on trust, 100% of the time. Even over candidates who are mid-tier on skill and very high on trust.
You have to trust your teammates. E Kane is a locker room cancer. He has proven time and again he is untrustworthy. Hard pass.
Trading for Evander requires a GM to have an awful lot of trust in his dressing room and its culture. If you’re the Bruins with Chara and Bergeron, you don’t even sweat about it, for eg.
But this is an Oiler room the GM felt needed Smith and Keith added to it to get some game swagger and emotional resilience.
And that looks like a mountain they still haven’t conquered from where we sit today.
I would be very surprised if Holly went after Kane.
Both Keith and Smith are excellent when healthy.
Yessir, you’ve encapsulated my point entirely.
Holland is not Sather, any more than Connor and Leon are Wayne and Mark.
It’s a bad fit.
Well said. You expressed this far more succinctly than I have. Thank you.
“Navy SEALs will dismiss candidates who are high on skill but low on trust, 100% of the time.” From what I’ve read this is true statement. I think it could be said of most professions where group work is important.
I suggest that comparing NHLers (or any modern professional athlete) to military personnel or processes is not accurate. The NHL (and other professional sport organizations) has a long history of valuing skill and success over off-ice behaviours. Money drives the industry – and nobody gets shot while playing.
You and Hunter are correct. Nobody is taking gunfire in the NHL. Nor did I infer such a correlation.
I’m talking about building a peak performance team in an industry beset with 31 other teams scrambling for the same peak.
If these guys can’t even stand up for their captain when he’s slewfooted into the net by a nefarious offender in a meaningless game at the end of the season against the franchise nemesis (IE, Kassian, Larsson)… then they’re not willing to go to battle in the trenches, as it were. There will be no playoff success.
These guys need to learn to rally around one another. Half of that is tactics and roster construction, and the rest is on the locker room dynamic which is set by the leadership corps.
I hear what you are saying. I’ve studied and experienced leadership, but I don’t know what styles are effective in today’s NHL team environment.
Based on the quotes surrounding the acquisition of Duncan Keith, I never expected the Oilers to be mired in a slump as they are now. I have to think Holland and those involved in the acquisition believed Keith would stabilize the team’s foundation. Lately, I’ve seen Keith play well on the ice and coach Tippett has gone out of his way to mention his voice in the ‘room’, but the team continues to lose. Which makes me curious how much impact leadership has on winning in the NHL? Is it less than we have been led to believe? Is it more? How does the impact compare to 10 or 20 years ago?
The Sharks have loads of veteran voices currently. Are they meeting, surpassing or below expectations?
The Islanders have an older roster with Parise, Chara, Palmieri, Beauvillier, Sorokin, Pelech and Greene. Does that translate to better leadership than other teams? If so, how does that translate to wins? Which is what it is all about.
Kane might be a jackass but hockey isn’t anything like the Navy Seals.
For one thing, NHL players are pampered beyond belief. Navy Seals eat worms in the desert and sometimes die.
I am not saying Kane is a good person, he has issues for sure. I am saying if you can get a 20-goal scorer for league minimum on a 2-year contract…you should. Especially with the slide this team is on…he could make this team a lot better without costing anything but a very small amount of money. That’s a good risk to take. Trading for Keith because we need leaders in the room…is not a good risk to take.
If Kane comes in and starts destroying the locker room, send him down to the minors or buy him out. No sweat. If he lights it up, he could potentially be used as trade bait for a different hole on our team, or (ideally) he turns his life around and becomes a valuable member of the team.
I can get behind KH bringing in Mike Smith because he is an absolute gem and I wish we had more like him on our team. He’s extremely passionate, vocal, and legitimately cares about the wellness of his teammates. We need 10 more of him…that aren’t 40 years old. He is a “character player” that plays the game for pure love of the game.
I really don’t buy the locker room “issues” being thrown around…not to the point where the GM felt he had to bring in Keith to help in that area. Keith is not a vocal guy, he leads by example. Too bad he’s passed his prime and his examples are sadly evidence that you can’t play this game forever. This excuse of leadership was just bologna our GM came up with to justify his abysmal trade.
Well, you can’t buy the player out mid-season but, yes, the risk should be nil, presuming the contract is just for the rest of the year and for under $1MM (annual cap hit) – of course, the extended leadership group would have to be on board.
I’m not sure when he’d be actually free to sign though. First you’ll have the player/NHLPA grievance to deal with, then, potentially an issue with the other franchises who won’t be happy the Sharks get out of the cap hit and then, of course, the US bankruptcy courts and his creditors having an issue.
If he becomes a FA, Sign Kane for the rest of the season at a low number. Kassian will keep him in line! -).
Some level of risk is required to “save” the season.
Looking at the rels and it looks like Klingberg is pretty comparable to Barrie defensively, with similar PP offense but weaker 5v5 offense. Why is this the guy to spend a bunch of assets for, considering there’s zero chance he’s an Oiler past July?
He’s 3rd in P/GP for active defensemen in the league right now (Barrie is actually 8th which surprised me) so he’s a pretty good player. And just by my eye and watching the two players, I would take Klingberg over Barrie on my team every day of the week.
I didn’t mean to say we should spend assets on a rental…but I’d rather spend them on Klingberg over MAF or some of the other crazy suggestions out there.
I’d like to see a trade for someone with term but those generally cost even more to obtain. Plus we have KH overpaying for a guy like Keith, so I can’t see us hitting a trade out of the park any time soon.
Like OP said, there is value in shedding Barrie’s contract and getting a very good rental at the same time. Saying there’s zero chance he’s an Oiler in July is also an assumption…a fair one…but still just guessing.
Looks like trolly guy is already testing the new flag system
So, Dallas takes down the high flying Penguins (I was sure Penguins could fly) this afternoon and make a move up the wildcard standings at .581 by points percentage.
Woodguy had pegged both Dallas and Winnipeg as teams that could upset the Apple cart for Pacific Division teams.
Its looking increasingly likely that the Central will take both wild card spots since STL and MIN are locked in a battle for 3rd in that division.
Also of note, LAK have a home date tonight against the floundering Red Wings so should also move up while Vegas has a bit of a home gimme against Chicago.
EDM is right in it. One of 5 or 6 teams for 2 spots. ….. but if they don’t start winning, none of it matters ….
Probably have a better idea by mid Feb which way they are going.
Van has the Death Valley roadtrip…. if they survive it, they are 1 of the 6 teams
I can’t imagine Vancouver does well on that trip considering they won’t have played for two weeks and FLA, TBL and CAR being 3 elite teams firing on all cylinders.
Of course, the Oilers still face that road trip from hell as well.
The Flames certainly got a comeuppance this past week.
This post is about 20 games too early.
Perhaps.
Before the Stars win today, Dom’s model had 4 Central teams ahead of all Pacific teams except Vegas.
One caveat with Dallas is that they have a poor road record and that may be an issue.
And one of their best players requested a trade
and are saddled with Benn Seguin boat anchors
more issues than just poor road record.
NEW for The Athletic: Revisiting Oilers’ 2021 draft decision to select Xavier Bourgault over goaltending
https://theathletic.com/3057261/2022/01/08/lowetide-revisiting-oilers-2021-draft-decision-to-select-xavier-bourgault-over-goaltending/
Sometimes the obvious choice is the right one. Even if both Oilers picks turn out, Wallstedt still would have been the overwhelming right pick.
Same as Zegras >>> Broberg
I think it’s early to make the statement a fact, but the trend is going in that direction.
Yes, the team needed a top goaltending prospect, and one was sitting there for the taking. This was a huge miss, in my view.
And the goaltending problem continues to be unresolved for the foreseeable future.
I’m not sure how that conclusion can be made with respect to the 2021 draft.
You could say that about the Broberg and Zegras draft but not a day has gone where I wouldn’t have picked Zegras over Broberg.
This is just a later version of that
Not even after Broberg’s first 3 or 4 games where you could see he’s going to be a top 4 D?
Which has more value…a #1C or a top 4D?
In what iteration of the multiverse is Zegras a #1C on the Oilers?
Hardly the point…he’s an elite level prospect with the ability to play centre or wing.
Being offensively skilled isn’t necessarily the same as a good 1C
It remains to be seen if he has the size, two way play and faceoffs to be solid at 1C
“ Defensively astute and proactive, he sees the lanes that his opponents do and will do his best to force the puck along the wall where he is at his best. All-in-all, Zegras is one of those special buzzsaw-type players that can excel in key roles and perform under pressure.”
That’s framing things a certain way.
Borninagretzkyjersey’s point aside, we don’t know what either player’s ceiling is at this point.
If we’re looking at a Nuge level C and a Nurse level D then that’s something resembling comparable value.
“Zegras is an elite two-way forward that can play both wing and center. His pro-level mobility is the foundation of his game, supplementing an in-transition speed that shifts the pace of play. He knows how to get under the skin of opponents and will actively seek out opportunities to lay the body and create separation, all the while staying attentive to the unfolding play. This unique aspect of his game makes him difficult and frustrating to play against.
His ability to finish and create plays is undoubtedly the hallmark of his game, as he is one of the major dynamos of his draft class. He is a dangerous scoring threat anywhere below the blue line and his vision matched with his net-drive propels him into positions that create high percentage opportunities. Defensively astute and proactive, he sees the lanes that his opponents do and will do his best to force the puck along the wall where he is at his best. All-in-all, Zegras is one of those special buzzsaw-type players that can excel in key roles and perform under pressure.”
https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/424453/trevor-zegras
I liked Kaliyev more, but Zegras was obviously the top choice for Edmonton at No. 8 overall. Holland would have scouted the hell out of the guy, I’d give money to see Edmonton’s list before Holland arrived.
Kaliyev may be a more lethal scorer but it seems Zegras may be the more complete player.
Yes even then.
Fair enough 🙂
I am very happy with the choice of Broberg .It is questionable, at any rate, whether Zegras, a hot-shot American, would have wanted to be in Edmonton.
The mistake the idiots who were stranded in Mexico made wasn’t to go. It was not saying they were a professional sports team.
It’s become fairly obvious that all the players are going to test positive at some point – with them being in close contact with each other, on and off the ice, plus with the opposition on the ice, plus travelling, etc., it seems inevitable.
Sens game notwithstanding, with the break coming up, here is hoping that they just “get it over with” now. Of course, the hope is that, young and fit and healthy guys with full vaccination, that no one has any material illness or lasting symptoms.
It is weird to almost hope that they get it and get it over with but, presuming, no lasting medical consequences, it’s best for the team – like the flames.
The wife and I are booked for Costa Rica the last two weeks of February and a big part of me almost wants to get it now and get it over with. Of course, I don’t want it and I’m still being careful but I’d much rather get it now than three days before the trip which would kibosh it.
Other than when on the ice, players have plenty of control over acquiring Covid (or the flu). Quality masks and distancing has served my family and I well over the past 2 years. We know they are all fully vaccinated, which also helps. I find it interesting that this age range of healthy (and wealthy) men have such a high rate of infection.
Also, I’ve read comments inferring that (and I’m paraphrasing) Covid is a ‘one and done’ deal. I’ve known a few people (and heard of many more) who have had Covid at least twice. Is there information that says it’s a ‘one and done’ virus? If so, please share.
It’s NOT a one-time thing, looking more like the flu or common cold in that regard (and Omicron is getting close to that level of dangerousness) whereby one can get re-infected with different variants. Heck, the Oiler Captain has.
Without wanting to go personal or political on this, do you have any sources that can cite your position that Covid infection is “NOT a one-time thing” or is that just an off the cuff statement?
My latest understanding is that the CDC cannot verify a single case of reinfection after a legit Covid case.
Unless one is using a shield and an N95, Omicron is going to get you sooner or later. (I wear glasses and use a KN95), OG Covid was only a little bit of a aerosol. Transmission was mostly by small droplets. Omicron is aerosol since its R0 is like 4 or 5 compared to OG Covid of maybe 1.5-2. With OG Covid, I used just a surgical mask.
Omicron Covid has enough mutations that is it is blowing through the acquired immunity from OG Covid and blowing through doubly and triply OG vaccines. Acquired immunity from Omicronshould take the players through the remainder of the season.
I’m responding in general Godot not directly to you, the information we are given from our fearless leaders about masks bothers me, because it really has some issues that anyone that has to sell breathing protection knows. It is very simple.
Nobody, well almost nobody, wears a typical mask properly as to not breath environmental air and what it carries.
Unless a mask has a sealing face fitting face piece (silicone, latex etc) properly fitted, no facial hair where it matters, you are breathing environmental air.
Doubling improperly fitted masks makes it worse because air doesn’t flow through as easily and goes around it even more.
Not that anyone can breath ‘through’ a cloth mask anyways, not enough air flow.
N95 is easier to breath through but they don’t seal to your face, you can’t/shouldn’t use them for fumes for example if you’re spraying paint.
I wear a mask and everyone should, it helps a bit, stops us expelling larger droplets.
We do what we can, but unless you wear a proper fitted respirator you are exposed to the air around you.
As to hockey there is no way to stop them now with Omicron from getting exposed. Other than not playing at all. It is far too transmissible. Luckily the vast majority are at very little serious risk.
Much of what you’re saying is quite accurate, especially the part about non-compliance and facial hair.
However, an N95 is not an appropriate choice for respiratory protective equipment for activities like spraying paint, where an organic vapour cartridge would be more suitable.
Having nitpicked your post, I largely agree with your overall point:
Exactly that is what I said about vapour
KN95 are not the same as N95 from the research I’ve been able to do. They’re a knockoff version that people are accepting with no documentation or research because they seem close enough.
A legit N95 mask needs to have two over the head loops, as opposed to two ear loops, for instance.
For what it’s worth, I’ve obtained N95 user certification pre-Covid.
KN95 is the Chinese version allegedly the same
But they’re not. They don’t have the NIOSH required head straps and instead have ear loops.
It’s not up to me to certify that as adequate, only to point out KN95 is a counterfeit version of N95. And that they’re manufactured in a location with a conflict of interest (during this pandemic) as well as a longstanding, highly suspect record of quality control (not to mention IP) across industries.
I’ll check the hundreds I have about the head strap tomorrow!
I know. I use a KN95 (now with Omicron) because I am more likely to use/fit it properly than an N95.
I have a few N95’s around for situations which might carry more risk than say shopping in off-peak hours.
I am able to use scheduling to avoid larger crowds most of the time.
Since Omicron is undoubtely aerosol, masking really now is more just a signalling exercise than anything else, if it wasn’t that already.
Where are you going in CR? Are you flying in/out of Liberia or SJ?
I spent a month backpacking the northern half in my university days.
We are flying in and out of San Jose.
In normal time, we would do a bunch of research, rent a car and see the island on our own (similar to Hawaii, etc.) but, given the current situation, we’ve booked a semi-private tour with G Adventures – aside from the other 10 (max) in our group (will all be fully vaxed), i think it will limit our interaction with the general public and will be easier to navigate from destination to destination.
Tortuguero, La Fortuna, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio
I don’t want to start a medicine war on a hockey blog, so I’ll just point out a couple of things about this thread for those interested.
Can you get Covid and then catch another variant again later? Yes, this is well known. In fact, you can even look up all kinds of stats for % reduction in chance of catching omicron from prior infection vs from vaccine, vs from having both.
Godot says very often here that triple-vax doesn’t protect you from infection, but I don’t think that is true. I haven’t looked at the last 2 weeks or so of data, but initial results showed quite good protection from symptomatic infection if you get that third shot.
RE: masks. Be careful not to conflate the requirements are different for viruses than chemical poisons. You may need a fitted respirator to prevent slowly building up enough chemicals over ten year’s work as a painter. But, you’re unlikely to get sick unless you get over a certain dosage of virus in one short period. This changes the requirements massively, and enough that almost any mask helps a bit, and N95s help rather a lot.
->There’s a chart making the rounds these days trying to sum this stuff up. The chart is far from perfect, but does encapsulate part of what is happening here. It boils down to this: if you sit beside a sick person and you’re both unmasked, on average it takes about 15 min. to build up enough airborne concentration to catch it. If you’re both in surgical masks that fit just OK, it’s more like an hour. If you’re both in N95s that fit roughly (10% leakage), it’s more like 25 hours. A fitted respirator-style N95 with 1% leakage is around 2500 hours. In fact, my wife is an ER doc and they only wear the big rubber-sealed masks when they intubate an really spray out virus. The rest of the time they wear the same paper N95 that I do and the ER docs have mostly made it through months and months in air with much higher viral loads than you or I are likely to see.
-> Obviously these are avg. numbers and depend on fit and air flow and infectivity of the person and variant and yada yada yada. Still though, they show clearly how all masks slow transmission, and that’s all we really need to do. If we can change it so that each sick person infects on average 0.9 people instead of 2, we go from exploding case loads to a gradual fading.
Bottom line is that it does seem counterintuitive to those that use masks for chemical protection, but even somewhat leaky masks work pretty well for viruses.
Yes, the vaccines still help against the severity of the disease, but they basically have no impact on preventing infection or preventing the vaccinated from spreading the virus. Omicron has an estimated R0 of 4-5. The main purpose of a vaccine is to prevent infection.
The remaining benefit of the vaccines is a significant prophylactic benefit in preventing serious disease. The vaccines are now a “medicine” and not a “vaccine”,.
The “vaccinated” are participating in the spread. We are all effectively unvaccinated again.
Yes, exactly, that is the claim you are making that I said was incorrect. I asked you for proof of this claim last time you said this, in case I missed a newer study, but you haven’t given one yet.
FYI, the name vaccine doesn’t mean prevention of all symptoms, it just comes from the first disease the treatment was attempted on: variolae vaccinae (cow smallpox). You can’t just invent a new definition for a medical term and then make claims about how a medicine does or doesn’t satisfy your personal definition. It’s incorrect, but more important, dangerous.
And also FYI, effectiveness of 3 shots is very much in line with most vaccines that we use. For example, see this headline about Polio vaccines:
Normal people use common sense, rather than try to maintain a narrative that does not help normal people function. What is most important to me is whether the vaccines confer significant immunity from infection, not whether they prevent serious disease or not. The second part is important, but is far less relevant to how one functions. For daily functionality, what matters is whether the vaccines confer a significant level of immunity or not.
I take care of my father. I am no spring chicken myself. With all variants up to and including Delta I was fairly confident the vaccines provided my siblings and me with a significant measure of immunity from infection. It determines whether my siblings can visit or not, or whether they need to test before they can visit my father. It determines the kind of activities that I will or will not allow myself to do.
With Omicron, I, and I believe rightly so, have no confidence that the vaccines, even triply vaxxed, as all of us are, confer any measure of immunity or protection against infection. So it changes the behavior of my siblings and me considerably. Whether my siblings can visit or not, with or without a test, and what activities I am willing to undertake.
Whether the vaccine confers immunity or not IS the practical thing that matters. One can be not longer confident that vaccines do.
That they still provide significant prophylactic benefit against serious disease is important, but far subsidiary in everyday life to whether the vaccines confer a level of immunity.
The misleading narrative that doctors, the government, and the media are maintaining about the effectiveness of the vaccines against infection from Omicron is just stupid.
What matters to everyday life behavior and decisions is whether it confers significant immunity.
Omicron means my siblings and me have to change our behavior to protect our father, because the vaccines do not confer immunity anymore.
If the vaccines still confered immunity, the list of continuing care homes, and assisted living homes with cases wouldn’t be exploding. Once the vaccines were available, the numbers of homes listed was low, until about a week ago. You know,, ACTUAL EFFING DATA…from the most heavily vaxxed locations.
The way to think about and function with the Omicron variant is that everyone is effectively unvaccinated again. And that there is some “stuff” you can get injected into your arm to reduce the chance of serious disease.
I’m just going to let this statement hang here. So it’s either every doctor in the country has made a mistake interpreting the studies or you have. What do you think is more likely?
You are quite wrong about this, and I’ve sent you the data before, but you prefer to lean on anecdotal evidence because you misunderstand statistics and medicine.
Ah hah, here it is, you’ve been caught in a logic trap. You feel like you’re right because you’re asking the wrong question.
Vaccine effectiveness is measured as the reduction in chance of infection versus an unvaccinated person under the same conditions. Did you know that NO VACCINE gives you a zero percent chance of infection? In fact, some people study vaccines by administering them to monkeys and then shooting enormous viral loads into their nasal cavities to see exactly how much it takes to make them sick? They do this because no matter the amount or quality of antibodies, it’s possible to induce an infection. No vaccine can protect you from developing a symptomatic case if exposed to too high of a viral load.
As a hypothetical: say an average persons life gives them a 0.28% chance of catching a specific virus on any given day. If they are unvaccinated, 0.28% per day adds up to about 102% over 365 days: they are gonna get sick. If unvaccinated, it’s a 20% chance of getting sick during a year: they are probably not going to get sick.
Right now, we have Omicron which is incredibly transmissible and the community levels are so high that everyone regularly gets exposed to several sick people a week. So, that baseline per diem rate isn’t 0.28%, maybe it’s 2%. If the wave lasts 2 months, that’s adds up to 120% chance of catching it for the unvaccinated and 24% for the vaccinated. One person probably wouldn’t catch it, but across the millions in the country, you’d certainly see lots go breakthrough cases. So you see, the source of breakthrough infections isn’t because the vaccine is poor, it’s because the baseline per diem risk of catching omicron is extremely high right now. Even a 95% effective VE—about the max possible—would still be 6% per person in the above numbers, so you’d still see lots of breakthrough with omicron.
So, what does this mean for an individual person trying to skip the infection? It means mask and distance to reduce your baseline per diem risk. Why bother with getting the boosted vaccine then? Oh, it doesn’t do much, just drops your risk an ADDITIONAL fivefold!! And, on top of that, it reduces your chance of serious side effects like death by a much larger number!! Mask + distance + 3x shot and you’re almost certain to make it through this wave unaffected. At a community level vaccines are even more important, because their ability to reduce infections and slow the spread can prevent the collapse of our hospital system.

This vaccine is a massive MASSIVE success, way better than we had any right to hope it would work for mutated strains, yet you’re out here trying to convince people that it isn’t. That’s very irresponsible. Unfortunately, my wife spent yesterday in the ER caring for an unvaccinated young person that is probably going to die of Covid because the internet and airwaves are filled with misinformation from people who think they can skip a decade of training and still be an expert.
My point was around that while you get the difference, so many don’t and think a fabric or blown mask (N95, or two or three at the same time) keep one from possibly getting the virus, and they don’t, they slow things, is all.
Yes, exactly. Masks aren’t perfect seals and don’t make anybody superman. Luckily, they still make an incredibly enormous difference to any one person’s chance of catching it, and to the level of community spread.
Sounds like an awesome trip, I’m jealous. FWIW I understand how it feels like you’re asking to ruin your trip by locking down at home just to catch it when travel makes you more exposed.
High quality mask and some care in distancing though, and I don’t think air travel is that risky. I even hit trouble heading home after Christmas and was stuck in the airports for 24 hours by myself with a 3 and 5 year old. But, all three of us are vaccinated and we all have KN95s and were careful and we’re past the window for symptoms so we made it through untouched.
My brother went on vacation over the break and he was careful with travel but then dropped almost all precautions during his last week as the town he was in had a very low reported infection rate. Double vaxxed but got extremely painful symptoms for about 12 hours and then was fine. Unfortunately, this started 4 hours before his return flight!! So, an extra 14 days of hotel bills….
We were fortunate to go on an amazing two trip to Naxos, Greece, Istanbul and Athens in September and navigated numerous flights/airports and populous areas without issue.
The difference now is how easily the new variant is spread.
We both have three shots and feel highly protected against material symptomatic illness – my only concern is testing positive prior to one of the flights (in particular on the way there) out of nowhere,
You know that you can still be a carrier if you’re asymptomatic, right? And if you are triple vaccinated, right?
Yes, and?
I’ve been in Costa Rica several times and actually worked there for a few months on the Pacific coast.
Manuel Antonio is a very special place.
See if you can find the Hotel California.
Evander Kane about to become a free agent.
Again I ask:
To Kane or not to Kane?
If he signs super cheap on a true “show me contract”…establish market value with one of mcDavid/Drai…would be true Last Stop Texaco.
I think I would do it. Slats would have
I would as well as long as McD and Leon are onside.
I also think Slats would
EK would certainly change the dynamic on the ice for a team lacking finish, crust and size on two wings in the top 6
Oh I think that’s a tough one. Obviously has a skill set the Oil could desperately use. Apparently Sharks players couldn’t get him out of their dressing room fast enough. I think the only way (in my opinion) would be if his contract was low enough to bury in the minors if you had to. Not sure he would sign a contract like that???? Do we have a strong enough veteran leadership group in the dressing room????
Problem with E Kane is, as enticing as his physical tools are, the bottom line is he’s a bad apple. He’s had multiple stops along the way to buy into a team identity but he’s stubbornly entrenched in his me-first attitude.
Unless there were some display and guarantee of commitment to team buy-in I don’t come within a country mile of that clown. He’s an embarrassment to his physical gifts, to any organization he plays for, to the game, and worst of all… to himself.
Just like the Oilers, E Kane just cannot get out of his own way. So, he’ll probably end up here on a $3MMx2 deal. Because Oilers.
I wonder if it will be that easy re: contract termination.
Will the bankruptcy courts be fine with this?
Will the other NHL teams be fine with this – it’s a massive win for the Sharks to get out of the rest of that contract.
====================
Dan-Milstein-Hockey
@HockeyAgent1
We are aware of the Sharks’ decision to put Evander on waivers for contract termination. If he clears, we will file a grievance. The Sharks do not have sufficient grounds for taking this action
====================
Makes sense and, of course, there are two other potential challenges – the various organizations the bankruptcy court.
Anthony DeAngelo had similar ( although different) behavioral issues and was similarly let go by the Rangers (bought him out).
Carolina took a chance and seem very happy with him.
#BehavioralAnalytics?
The issues with Deangelo are very different than Kane. Deangelo appears to have learned from his mistake. Kane just continues burning bridges
I agree he has had multiple chances and even with a strong veteran group he still went off the rails. I would still give him a chance he is 30 now and needs to think about life after hockey. I would employ MacT to give him a talking to. He is an example of someone who turned it around.
But Deangelo wasn’t on his 4th team.
WPG players didnt like Kane
BUFF players didnt like Kane
SJ players dont like KANE.
Everyone deserves a 2nd chance, but not neccesarily 4 chances.
As LT often says – “you develop a past”.
Kane is a cancer in the room. Would think only a team with a very strong coach and locker room culture could ‘tolerate’ him. It’s not an accident that Winnipeg, Buffalo and San Jose could not wait to get him out of their rooms.
I dunno, he played 6 seasons in the Atlanta/Winnipeg organization.
Then he was traded to Buffalo with Bogosian for a 1st, Myers, Armia, Stafford and Lemieux.
After almost 3 seasons in Buffalo he was traded at the deadline (expiring contract) to the Sharks for a 1st and 4th. Then re-signed by the Sharks to a 7×7 deal.
Not quite being run out of town aside from the current departure from SJ.
In Winnipeg he definitely had issues. Had incidents in both the 2014 and 2015 seasons with teammates.
Also, if you saw in the release today where he was put on unconditional waivers that it was for an “AHL COVID violation”. So the guy misrepresents getting a vaccine, he’s supposedly learned his lesson, and goes to the AHL and has a COVID violation there pretty quickly. Is this really someone you want in your room?
Just saying ‘couldn’t wait to get rid of him’ might be a bit much since both his trades brought nice returns, and SJ handed him a big contract after test driving him in 2018.
I didn’t see the release, and agree continued violations are definitely not good. I’m also not suggesting he hasn’t had issues with his teammates and otherwise.
Still, if the financial commitment is small I’d at least consider it. The upside is huge.
That return was due to Chevy being patient and waiting for the right deal.
As per my post above, Kane asked for a trade every off-season from the time the franchise moved cities.
The talent level is as tantalizing as it is undeniable.
The problem is that the Oilers (seem to) lack a room/bench that can bring him alongside. If Jumbo and Marleau can’t, when Kane’s career was at an obvious crossroads, I don’t know who else could. Maybe Chara and Ovi. IDK.
It would have to be a very specific contract with very clear boundaries set and an understanding that there would zero tolerance and an instant waivers and buyout of the one year league min contract.
Apparently Kane was in Covid protocol while with the Barracuda and is accused on taking an unauthorized flight which the team is treating as a violation of his standard players contract.
Appears to be similar to how the Kings got rid of Mike Richards albeit with a small cap penalty.
That kind of makes it seem he hasn’t learned much.
He wasn’t run out of town in WPG, until he was.
He himself asked for a trade every off-season once the organization moved from ATL to WPG.
Kane wore out his welcome in that locker room after publicly known stunts like flashing wads of cash on Twitter (twice), and showing up to team meetings wearing a track suit instead of like a grown man in a suit and tie, per team policy. Recall that incident, where Big Buff threw his track suit in a locker room shower. Also, recall that they both moved cities with the team, so by that point Kane had already established a track record of his character amongst his peers.
Let’s not forget the time when he was internally suspended (for what, three games?) in WPG due to missing practice after staying up all night… playing video games.
In fact, he even bitched to the media about the team’s move from ATL to WPG, citing cultural differences at the city level.
Guy has skills, that’s undeniable, but he’s a tire fire. He’d be absolutely worthwhile if he’d learned a single life lesson by now, or if there was reason to think that the organization in EDM could rehabilitate him.
Hard pass.
Evander Kane is the Antonio Brown of the NHL.
And the commentators I heard said many teams would grab him in a heartbeat
It the price is low enough though there’s essentially no risk, only upside. Even if he hasn’t learned any lessons. I’d at least consider it.
We can get Kassian to keep him in line.
For those interested, here is a recent article on Savoie:

Thx for sharing. Good to see Carter recognizes what he needs to do and work on.

Oilers entering COVID protocol today: Yamamoto, Bouchard, Koekkoek, Perlini, Konovalov.
Best it runs thru the whole team, then they “shouldn’t” have to worry about it for the rest of this season
Hopefully Flurona doesn’t make its way too North America.
“Flurona” is just a concurrent infection of the flu and COVID. It’s not a new disease or a new variant. It can’t “make its way” anywhere.
Thanks Doc.
I tried and tried to get my doctor wife to say “I concur” because we just watched Catch Me If You Can, but she claims they don’t really say that. Yeah right.
Anyways, she says RENs is right.
Best to have everyone get it when you don’t have any games. And the acquired immunity should be solid for the rest of the season and the playoffs, since we are not likely to see a new variant for awhile.
Aside: The NFL doesn’t PCR test a player for eight? weeks after they have recovered. i.e Aaron Rodgers won’t have a PCR test until after the NFC championship game since being out one week with Covid. I’m not sure what the NHL policy is.
I believe the NHL is the same where tests are not recovered if recently recovered.
Marody never getting a chance on a team with a terrible bottom six is inexplicable. As DNB said, the Oilers have been outscored 2:1 with the bottom six on the ice.
Yes, plenty of teams have AAAA types who don’t get to play, but many of those teams have good bottom six players in place.
Putting aside the dearth of analytics in the org, how about the lack of imagination? They do the same thing over and over again and then point at the goalie when things go wrong. There is value in building and developing a good bottom six, but they don’t want to do the work.
Thing I’ve seen with Cooper over the years is he appears disinterested in playing away from the puck and isn’t physical. I get he’s skilled, but he’s got to put his head down and grind a little if he wants to fit into the bottom six before earning ice on a skill line.
I’d like to see him make it, but don’t see it happening unless all the stars align perfectly.
Why not let Marody come up and play with McLeod, and Benson?Could they be any worse than what we have been using?LEt these kids have a chance to prove what they can do!
Tippett just keeps playing the same vinyl record, whip Connor Leon and Nurse into exhaustion. No wonder we never tie it up late are with our Goalie pulled. He needs to give the bottom 6 more responsibility ( who’s playing good that game ) which leads to more confidence and better results. I like Tippett but I called for his job when we lost 5 in a row at home his refusal to line match and give others a honest chance is all I needed to see.
I’ve wondered the same about Edmonton’s failure to produce with their goalie on the bench. You’d think a lethal powerplay would extend to 6v5, but no. According to NST they have played 22:39 with their goalie on the bench so far this season & have produced 0 goals. 16 shots, a little below 45 per 60 which sounds like a lot until you notice that 20 NHL teams are north of 60 shots per 60 with the game in the “storm the Bastille” phase. Three teams are north of 100.
Edmonton is one of 6 teams with 0 goals scored in that scenario, but the one with the most minutes. Meanwhile Tampa Bay has scored 10 goals with their goalie pulled, in fewer minutes than the Oilers. (Minnesota leads the way with 11, but in 50+ minutes, suggesting extreme strategies employed by Dean Evason & co.)
7 teams, all but 1 of them elite, have a GF% north of 50% with their own goalie on the bench. The Oilers are of course mired at 0%.
More than once I’ve been left wondering if the lack of success is due to Edmonton’s top guns being gassed after playing 25 or more minutes by that point.
Has this been a problem historically for the Oilers? Playing the top guns a lot has been an issue for a many years now IIRC
I think Tampa has a set plan and Cooper has been there long enough to enforce that
I think all of the top teams have defined structure everywhere and it allows their players to play faster because they think less
I don’t see that the Oilers have much of any offensive plan, and if they do Tipp hasn’t been able to dial it in
That’s startling data. Wonder if the Oilers staff even realizes how putrid they are at the 6v5 game state.
I’m too lazy to look up my own data, but I’d wager Batman and Robin play >60% of the last 5 min when trailing by 1 or 2 and their shift lengths seem to get longer later in games. So by the time they pull the G they are operating at much less than 100%.
I seem to remember a few teams shifting their strategy to pulling the G earlier than most. Like with more than 3min remaining vs the traditional last min dash. Not sure if the numbers prove these coaches are ahead of the curve or not
Sounds like another nail in Tippetts coffin.
They had that chance in the preseason and as I recall, the results were terrible.
Also, what could go wrong running three rookies (two of whom have no better than average skating speed/skill) together?
Instead of pigeonholing him as bottom-six, we should look at him as middle six. I like to see him have a chance to be on Leons right side before Zack
Pretty good chance Marody is up for Monday with Yamamoto and Perlini out (if the game goes ahead).
If so I’d run:
Hyman-McDavid-Kassian
Foegele-Draisaitl-Puljujarvi
Benson-McLeod-Marody
Shore-Ryan-Turris
Familiarity for the young guys, Puljujarvi with Draisaitl since he’s gone a bit stale with McDavid, and since Kassian has had success there before.
With respect to the bottom 6 getting outscored 2:1, I would posit, that, recently, the bottom six has not been the issue – the issue has been the top 6 getting outscored and the PK.
Over the last 10 games, the Oilers are 7-7 in goals with Leon and McDavid off the ice.
The bottom six has been much improved in recent times.
I like it
I like Phil Kemp – he is a much better passer of the puck than he generally gets credit for – a beautiful stretch pass to Griffith last night for a clear breakaway.
Broberg didn’t have his best 2-game stretch and, to my eye, his ice time was down. I’m wondering if he’s banged up a bit. I hope not as, if he is, that’s kind of starting to be a trend with him. In any event, he did pick up an apple on the tieing goal last night (a boomer off the end boards that Hamblin stuffed in).
Lavoie was great last night – he must have had 6 or 7 shots. Its was a good bounce-back after an invisible game on Thursday. He did turn the puck over on the go-ahead goal (but it was a nice defensive play).
Marody was culpable on the 1st goal against last night – he flubbed a PP pass back to Broberg which led to the danger. It wasn’t a bad decision, he just flubbed it. I think the 3 points in the last minute of the game plus OT more than made up for it.
Yes, its time, Marody needs some NHL games and, with Yamamoto on protocol…….
I like to see Cooper on Leon’s right side before moving Zack there.
Kemp has been solid at every level I think he’s a smart player
For him it will come down to NHL skating, he doesn’t have enough else to justify a spot, like so many good younger players
Marody’s plight as well. Smaller player, not elite skill, non physical, not really cooperative with team goals (my skating is fine or whatever he said ) not NHL fast….tweener
Seeing Savoie’s name in today’s piece reminded me that I still haven’t seen any intel on why he didn’t play last weekend, injury or illness (or other). Denver doesn’t play this weekend either.
Speaking of Bourgault vs. Petrov, as impressive as Petrov has been, I’ll still keep Bourgault up a tier as I think is material that Petrov has another high-end producer on his team, in Brandon Coe who, while older, is right with Petrov in production (actually ahead).
On Holloway, I posted yesterday that, given Holland’s verbal a couple weeks ago, its not likely he plays in the NHL this season – Holland was fairly express that the plan was to have him in Bakersfield for the rest of the season. That was before I listened to Tippett after yesterday’s practice and he sounded quite giddy re: Holloway and spoke to seeing where he is after 8-10 games in the AHL.
“So you’re saying there’s a chance……”.
See above for info on Savoie.
I get mocked when I say this, but Holloway will be on the NHL roster prior to the deadline. That’s late March… he could get 2 months in the AHL first.
I agree if he’s healthy
Even as a rookie he’s a better player than a lot of current options and he’ll get game fit in that time
Been with this LT group for 15+ years. Greatful for it. Keep it between the lines gang.
On that note. Go get a goalie. Go get a two way top 6 winger so our players slot better into a balanced lineup. And go get an upgrade at D.
Someone mentioned Bear was 3rd paid last night. Yeah, that’s why they are a championship calibre team. On the Oil he’d be first pair. And that’s the difference between winning and losing. Players in their proper spot.
So you want a
GOALIE
TOP 6 WINGER
DEFENSEMAN
So what assets are you parting with for All that?
I’ve posted it a few times.
Varlamov and Mayfield from isles For Koskinen, 3rd and Lagesson
Brown and Holden from Sens
For
Barrie and Lavoie
Money works. Upgrade at LD and RD. Adds Brown to top 6 sliding down Puljujarvi and Yamamoto. Allows Nuge to play 3C .
Lots to give up but it works cap wise, it works for the other teams in the deals. Balances our lineup and gives us a shot for this year and next without hurting our active roster.
I see no reason for either OTT or NYI to take such trades.
The likely ask for someone like Brown is at least a 1st (see Coleman) and no combination of Barrie and Lavoie brings such value.
While the Isles are likely out of the playoffs (though, I doubt they pack it in), they get nothing of value in return. Koskinen is negative value so the 3rd pretty much covers them taking him. Then they’re trading a cheap and solid RD in Mayfield for a guy (if we’re honest) is a fringe Dman that’s unlikely to become nearly as good as Mayfield. If we had a player similar to Mayfield, would you not expect at least a 2nd in return? That’s without touching what Varlamov might be worth (he’s harder to put a finger on).
Beyond that, these trades would add 5mil + 3.6mil + 1.4mil to next year’s cap while only clearing 4.5mil- a net difference 5.5mil in additional cap hit next year. It certainly fills a number of holes but leaves the team in tough to re-sign Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, McLeod, and co.
I don’t disagree but would posit that part of the value is taking on the Varlamov contract and the $5MM for next season.
Niemelainen is on the ice for the optional today.
I just wanted to take a minute today to thank all the well wishers on this blog. The triple bypass was postponed until the Dec. 22 and turned into a 6 bypass. Sheesh. And Xmas in a hospital wasn’t much fun. Oth…everything went extremely well and I was released on the 28th. Positive thoughts from people I’ve never met really helped a lot through that miserable week.
Now I marvel at about 70 staples running a track from ankle to crotch and about 10 inches of stitchery center mass that might make a 19th century Parisian milliner proud. Thing is, I can’t be more thankful. Best life changing event ever!
Anyway, I’m under the impression (as of today) the UofS Huskies and Canada West are giving it a go through the pandemic…which brings me to Mike Babcock. My jury is out on a coaching change at this time, in particular this one, but where else can $20-30 bucks buy one a seat behind one of the winningest NHL coaches of all time?
If I’m able, I’m going to scout the dude over the next 6 weeks. I’d be great to get other opinions and suggest the opportunity not be lost for anyone else living in the Saskatoon area.
Now it’s time for another hit of dilaudid. No despair from me. The dope is way too good! (No I’m not an addict;-)
all the best to you Melvis, have missed reading your stories. Happy healing.
Very glad to hear your surgery went well. Can’t imagine how tough being in the hospital over Xmas would be. I am in the over 65 gang and have had a couple of short stays in hospital and admire the people who work there but couldn’t leave soon enough. Hope your rehab goes well and you get back to the lifestyle you enjoy!
Great news Melvis…I assume your surgery was at RUH….they do good work there. While living in Saskatoon I followed those Huskies for 32 years…they were in the “Old Barn” not that shiny new rink they call home now. I may just make the drive from RD over to join you watch Babcock.
i remember watching Dave King play in that “Old Barn”.He was a pretty big deal in the day. I might have had a few intermural games in Rutherford my own self.
Great! I’d been wondering if you’d managed to get in for this. I was worried you’d be delayed again until March as hospital bed usage is really starting to head upwards pretty fast.
Wonderful report! You rock, Melvis!
Absolutely aces!
Great to hear Melvis
I’m glad to hear that your surgery went well and hope for a speedy recovery. I don’t think Babcock is what this team needs but I’ve been wrong once or twice before. From my perspective it would be great to have Woodcroft get the rest of the season and see how it goes. Katz is not likely to want to give out another big coaching contract when the team is looking at an unknown number of empty buildings for home games anyway.
I like the idea of a woodcraft test drive if they decide to move on from Tippett. He knows the players and in my opinion has earned a shot as a head coach. I would like him to bring Manson with him!
Happy to hear that Melvis did not leave the (Earth) building!
Looking forward to Babs reports
Wonderful news, I wish you a speedy recovery.
Great to hear it went well Melvis. Wow, you got a great attitude man.
And thanks for letting us know, I was beginning to get concerned.
As for scouting Babcock, can you hear if he berates his players? He was a total prick to Johan Franzen. Bully. Franzen has spoken about it.
I watched the Hurricanes beat the Flames last night. That is a legit team.
Bear clearly was the 3rd pair defenseman which feels different than some of the narrative I have heard on the oiler twittervese.
Was Foegele aquired with 1RHD or a 3RHD?
1RHD on one team is a 3RHD on another it would seem.
Bouchard would be 3RHD on that team as well.
Given a choice, you’d chose Bear over Bouchard?
Not at all. Bouchard is amazing. But hes young. Should be on third pairing yet. Bit I think 1RHD is better served in his future years.
Faux choice. The choice was Bear or Barrie.
Different conversation Bro.
The question I posed wasn’t what did Holland do.
The question I posed is, would “you” choose Bear over Bouchard?
If they are both being posited as legit top 4 Dmen, then the question has merit.
Hmmm not quite the $1.1M savings between Bear an Bouchard’s salary and the saving between Larsson and Ceci allowed the Oilers to upgrade to Barrie
An excellent read on the Hurricanes here:
https://theathletic.com/3057426/2022/01/08/why-is-no-one-talking-about-the-carolina-hurricanes/?source=user_shared_article
Bear is a nice player … but his upside is limited. He’ll carve out a career as a 3RHD on a good team (Carolina) and a 2RHD on a mediocre team (Oilers).
Foegele would be a 3LW on any team in the league.
This was a hockey trade.
I agree this a hockey trade because the replacement was ready….for $1.1M less.
Which one of these is not like the other?
2021/22
Bear 25gm 7 points,16.36 TOI/GM
Jones 13gm 3 points, 14.37 TOI/GM
Benning 31gm 5 points, 16.46 TOI/GM
Bouchard 34gm 19 points, 21.28 TOI/GM
He has been #6 d with very limited minutes for quite some time
but the key to immortality is being traded by the Oilers
Bear’s EV TOI/GP is 14:13, exactly the same as DeAngelo. Here are the D ahead of Bear:
Slavin 17:33
Skje 16:52
Pesce 16:15
Chatfield (only 7 GP) 15:53
Slavin and Skje are both LHD. Pesce is right.
Remove the guy with 7 GP, and Bear is tied for 4th in EV TOI, or tied for second amongst RHD, that’s on a good team with a deep defence. I consider Slavin to be a #1 D, and Bear is playing just 3 fewer minutes per game on average at evens than him. That’s three shifts, or one shift per period.
I’m guessing here but I suspect DeAngelo gets a bit of a push when they need goals and Bear plays more when they are leading.
Anyway. I think calling Bear a #6 D is disingenuous.
Averages for the season are disingenuous as it weighs what happened at start of the season equally to what is happening now.
Bear has watched his ice time drop. Dengelo has watched his ice time increase
Last 5 games
Bear: 14:29, 11:06, 15:43, 17:26, 14:29
Denagelo: 21:00, 22:27, 16:42, 19:03, 19:24
Also those 5 games were all with big leads with 6-3, 7-4, 4-0, 5-1, 5-3 wins. So the theory about the push is not true. Bear is a # 6D on that team currently
Also. Would Barrie even dress for Carolina? DeAngelo > Barrie.
Carolina chose to trade a serviceable asset in Foegele for Bear, when they could have had Barrie for free?
Money wasn’t exactly an issue, since they have $6 million lying around to offer sheet Kotkaniemi.
Bear’s ice time is “limited” to be available just-in-case Pesce isn’t available for a defensive situation. DeAngelo is the soft minutes assassin.
i.e. Bear’s TOI is managed for situational hockey. Like a good middle reliever in baseball.
Except those minutes are dropping
and is a depth pker now
Narrative.

A 2RHD. Carolina is just a contender with a deep roster.
My intuition tells me, that it is highly unlikely that if Tippett is let go at the end of the season, that Jay Woodcroft will become the heir apparent.
I just don’t see the organization having the patience to break in a rookie NHL Head Coach, given the perceived window to win before Leon’s next contract.
I think, if you are a Woodcroft fan, you might be hoping that Holland (for the first time in his professional career) fires a Head Coach in-season.
Then perhaps Woodcroft gets a shot to in a sort of “show me” opportunity that has been created by happenstance.
Last time we promoted a good ahl coach to the nhl at the end of his contract he bolted to another ahl team when the nhl job didn’t stick. Let’s hope your scenario doesn’t play this way.
Also I think I like Manson for assistant in nhl more then I like woodcraft for head coach.
There were a number of errors in that scenario including parachuting a captain in from a different organization that was no longer NHL calibre.
Holland did prompted Blashill from Grand Rapids to the Rec Wings so there is a precedent with Ken.
Uggg, terrible spelling…or auto spell check got me.
Holland did promote Blashill from Grand Rapids to the Red Wings so there is a precedent with Ken.
Auto misdirect is so much fun!
I think Kenny thinks goalies are mostly the same and coaches too
He’s right, but that shouldn’t mean you don’t push for the ones that aren’t the same
If I’m not mistaken, Holland’s position on tending is that that very elite are worth paying for but, once you get past the elite of the elite, there is a massive tier without much to choose among them.
I’m guessing $4.5M for Koskinen kills him.
Exactly
My question is how is Woody different than Tipp except younger?
They don’t need more of the Flattie / Tipp coaching tree.
Either a different style more energetic coach or may as well keep Tipp.
I like Woody and I would be just fine with him as the next head coach of the Oilers but I will continue to “warn” the community that there are things many criticize Tip for that seem to be part of his repertorie as well including, primarily, highly relying on veterans.
Esposito, Cracknell, Malone, etc. are highly relied up on in all situations for the Condors.
Last year Stanton and Gravel were highly relied upon and, even this year, Deharnais, not even on an NHL contract, is relied on over the likes of Kemp, Kesselring, Samorukov, etc.
I’ve read this summary of yours before.
I wonder if that’s a function of keeping the journeymen happy and to keep the bar at a certain level for the team as a whole. As in, you have to have the guys on AHL only contracts be willing to sign and perform consistently, so you have to give them enough rope to do so. This motivates the prospects to excel, while keeping the team’s reputation positive for those unlikely to see NHL ice time.
What about the average AHL coach and their deployment? More pertinently, how did Nelson dole out ice time in OKC? As I recall he also leaned on veterans to some degree…
It reflects the lack of depth at specific positions. I talked to a hockey guy once who told me his team (not the Oilers) would gladly overpay a center to play in the AHL by a bunch just so the position was covered during a time of weakness.
For example, Desharnais is RH D and Mike Kesselring, Phil Kemp and Filip Berglund also play the position. None have a great deal of experience, so Desharnais is there to make sure the team is competitive.
Same thing at center, where the Condors have a plethora of AHL guys. It spills over to the wings because the prospects (Lavoie, Safin, the now released Maksimov) aren’t pushing up.
Lavoie is pushing now, so the veteran AHLers will play less. It’s a balance imo, and for me Woodcroft has been excellent in developing the kids.
jmo
I don’t disagree with parts of this but this was also the case when the team did have a bunch of “real forward prospects” with Benson, Marody, Maksimov, McLeod, Safin, Lavoie, etc.
Even last season, when Lavoie was performing, he was not on PP1 – that was still Cracknell, Malone, etc.
With his recent uptick in play, Laovoie has not seen his ice time increase. Kesselring has been healthy scratched for Deharnais. Etc.
I understand why these deployment decisions happen and could easily see Woody/Manson playing Koekkoek/Russell over Lagesson, for example.
If Lavoie keeps playing like he has recently, his icetime will increase. One reason he might not be getting cherry minutes is what he’s doing in the defensive zone. The giveaway (unlucky I admit) for the 2-1 goal last night might be an example.
You could be right, and I hope we find out (and that you are right), but from my eye test, this hasn’t really been the case in the recent past (i.e. last season).
It will be very interesting to see how Holloway is deployed.
I’d say the other skills Holloway brings make him much more likely than Savoie, Petrov and Lavoie to get in the bigs sooner, assuming he’s healthy.
If he’s a younger faster version of Hyman that would be incredible.
I think he’ll bring better hands than Hyman as well
I’m dying to test the new red flag feature.
Godot, can you post something something about Zach Kassian. Please and Thank You.
.

Kidding Bro!
You’re a wanker!
Fire it up!
Yellow Flag!
You’ll have to do better (ie. worse) 🙂
Too soon!
Hold on. It’s coming.
Asking this question not to get you to change your chart, but rather to perhaps fill a gap in my understanding.
Is age not one of the most important data points when exploring things like the NHLE of prospects?
Is there a reason your chart does not include an Age column? Is it appropriate to assume draft year age for all of them is rounded to 18?
I would think even 6 months age difference would matter some.
For me, comparing NHLe for young prospects has little value unless adjusting for age.
Production as a 17 year old. vs. 18 year old vs. 19 year old vs. 20 year old in any league (let alone across leagues) is massively different.
Agreed. Hence my question.
Not in Edmonton so not sure the local reaction but has there been any pushback about postponing games and creating a competitive disadvantage simply for money?
The Oilers are in a dog fight with American teams who will have a normal schedule and the Oilers are choosing to add back-to-backs or 3 in 4s.
And the PA should be criticized as they are choosing money over safety wrt to working conditions.
Or is this oversimplifying?
The owners would prefer the money, that’s clear by now. And the NHL prefers the American market, they have the Canadian market without exerting effort.
It’s a great question. It’s seemingly very complicated.
Makes me wonder if these will become asterisked “Covid Cups* ” in future references.
16 teams make the playoffs, and it takes 16 wins to earn the Cup, so no.
So if you didn’t play well enough to be one of the 16 teams, you have no right to complain. And the 16 wins drives legitimacy.
Reaches into back pocket trying to grab red flag…..
.
.
Kidding bro. (you may be Godot to the others, but to me you’re Brodot 🙂 )
Well there is this 3 week break in February
I was thinking Gary must love this.
There are 5 Canadian teams that can push in the playoffs this season (I am including our good guys, who knows right?).
These postponements make it harder for them to go deep I think, cup and games gets to stay south as he likes it. For this season.
Tippett has made his mind up about Marody. If there is one thing we’ve learned about this coach is that once he makes up his mind about a player, that player is done.
If there are two things we’ve learned about this coach, it is that NHL vets can do no wrong, while rookies can never make a mistake.
Todd Tippett or Dave McLelland for next coach.
Yes, this is the part that must drive scouting and the farm team crazy. Spend all the resources to find a potential player and the NHL coach wont give the guy a chance once he makes up his mind. What a waste. Marody has done everything asked of him and still cannot get a sniff. He cannot be any worse than Turris.
Tippett is done here. It’s just a matter of whether he gets to finish the season. Given that we’re dealing with Tambellini I mean Holland and we have a clear break now with no firing, he’s going to finish the season.
Hilarious to me Stauffer saying pressure will be on to fire him if we lose to Ottawa. Because 11 straight losses with Tippett is okay, but 12 is the straw that broke the camel’s back
For the record, Tippett was behind the bench for 10 of the losses & 0 of the wins in the current 2-9-2 slide. But in many many places I am seeing him being charged with all 11 losses, as if he missed just the 2 wins. He in fact missed 3 games.
With the Oilers already mired in a 5-game losing streak, the first game he missed was the 5-1 loss to Toronto on Dec 14. Then he also missed the subsequent wins over CBJ & SEA. 4 games were postponed, then he returned at STL on Dec 29 & the club commenced another 5 game losing streak.
Lest we forget he also has an active 6-game losing streak in the postseason. So the real facts are damaging enough without need of embellishment. (Not aimed at you, dustrock, this is a widespread, albeit minor, issue. Suffice to say it’s been well over a month since he was behind the bench for a win.)
Nice post. Stauffer isn’t the only one saying it. The coach is either here or he’s gone. The results of one game shouldn’t make a difference.
As an Oiler fan, I know what’s going to happen. Tipp will still be the coach throughout this extended break, the team will come back, get hammered by Florida and then lose to Calgary. And then he will be fired.
This is the absolute worst outcome. If you’re going to fire the guy, do it now so the new coach has time to work with the team.
This is coming from a fan who really has no opinion about Tippet’s value as a coach. As an Oiler fan, I also know this is the way it works around here.
I hear what you’re saying, but this isn’t the old Oilers management. The current GM has no history of doing that sort of thing in his current role, or ever in his 30+ year career.
I get your sentiment and generally agree. But would push back on two fronts.
1) I’ve made my mind up about Marody too. Very Good AHL’er. NHL useful in a pinch.
2) Tippett has played Niemelainen, Broberg, McLeod, Skinner, Bouchard and Benson this season. That’s actually a lot of rookie presence.
He’s had no choice but to play those guys.
Well… No…The whole premise of the thread is that he’s not playing Marody.
Most of those was because he had to if he had a full squad how many of those players make the team?
Well, no Lee. he’s playing them ahead of Marody and other AHL vets.
Russell healthy scratched to start this season and last season in favor of Koekkoek
Kassian removed from the 1st line in early 2020 and the, again, once given a new shot at 1RW in the playoffs and failing.
Barrie moved to 3RD in favor of Bouchard.
Turris healthy scratched for half of last season and much of this season.
There are many examples of demotions for veterans on merit.
My two cents:
Abusive Flag is the worst. (Sorry Ryan, I know you are just trying to find an equitable solution) It relies on everyone being reasonable human beings, which is ironic considering it was brought in because everyone wasn’t being reasonable.
People will abuse it because of perceived slights, because someone makes them defend their incorrect views, because someone doesn’t agree with their politics or just because some people are jerks.
I know LT doesn’t have time to police the comments. Nor should he have to. But here we are.
How about this: If two people are going at it on here and you don’t have a dog in the fight, just scroll on. Don’t interfere. Don’t post calls for bans. Don’t post awful attacks.
As Dionne Warwick sang: Walk On By.
Do people have to abuse it? Is that inevitable?
If the narrative is a few runaway apples ruining batch from time to time:
Logically then it shouldn’t be too hard for community without requiring LT yo monitor can just put a cork on it for the night, more or less.
Present course not as desired. Can we collectively act like adults or is their likely a larger petulant child factor than perceived in most mind’s eyes?

This team needs a Stephenson or Rodrigues type trade but I’m guessing we’d be on the other side of that trade
Gabriel Villardi.
Last time we had that trade was for Patty Maroon.
Long overdue for another.
A quick update on that young man who died during the Brunswick game Thursday. When he fell, another player skated into him and the skate blade slashed his throat. Medical personnel were on him immediately and they got him to the hospital which is not too far away, but he did not make it.
https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/brunswick-school-teddy-balkind-hockey-player/
I remember when my kids were young playing hockey and they had to wear neck guards. They all complained like crazy. Finally when they got to the age that they no longer had to wear them you would think they had just been paroled from prison. In my opinion, every player should wear a neck guard until they play pro.
Prior to St. Luke’s, he played at the New Canaan Winter Club. My kids played at the Greenwich Skating Club. Played each other probably four times a year. The coolest thing was both clubs rinks were outdoors. This is in Connecticut, not really cold winters but what a lot of fun for players and fans. Outdoors with a light snow falling, fireplace indoors to warm up. Great memories.
I cannot imagine what his family is going through. I know the hockey community in Connecticut is a strong one and is there to support them. May his memory be a blessing.
That is absolutely tragic,
His team mates must be devastated.
When Clint Malarchuk, Sabres goalie in the mid to late 80’s had this happen, the immediate NHL response and across the hockey world was that goalies started wearing neck guards. Today you don’t see that, I think this reactionary change only lasted about 4 or 5 years, but I could be very wrong.
If this was industry it would be a requirement etched in stone. It boggles my mind, why it is not that way. The Malarchuk scene still haunts me to this day.
My thoughts are with the young man’s family, teammates, witnesses, medical personnel who tended to him and especially the young men who were involved in this accident.
I remember neck guards being bulky and unpleasant but with the new technology I’m sure that very light and comfortable versions are available. It will no doubt be another expensive piece of equipment but one that should be required for sure. Whether it’s a skate blade or puck to the throat, bad things can happen in hockey games.
They are made of kevlar now and are not large or bulky at all. There really is no excuse. Should be mandatory like a helmet.
What’s going on with Drieder?
Who is Drieder?
Sorry, I can’t spell. Driedger, Chris Driedger.
Ah, Driedger. Good man, Driedger. He started very slow in Seattle, coming around now. He has a .915SP in his most recent six games, so I expect he’ll recover by the end of the year. A target for Edmonton? Possibly.
Last summer’s target.
There is a situation developing in Vancouver with Halak.
He is due a $1.5 million games played bonus when he plays 3 more games and there is speculation that Rutherford doesn’t want to pay it since it would applied next season as a bonus overage.
Halak is also apparently unhappy with a lack of starts playing behind Demko (and receiving the bonus money.)
Complicating things is a NMC but I imagine he would waive for the right situation.
Probably not a solution for a cup run but maybe a decent option to swap Koski, depending on how motivated Rutherford is.
Are you suggesting Halak to the Oilers as an option?
A long shot to be sure but could be a veteran upgrade.
Hoping for a successful and healthy rest of season in AHL for Holloway. He’s missed a lot of time
I would like to support Lowetide’s decision to limit the number of posts per user.
I have long grew weary and wary of the rants and the bickering.
For those who believe they have a whole lot to say and a whole lot to share, I would suggest they invest the time and money in their own blog.
That’s no longer in place, Bob. We now have a reporting system for abusive posts.
I feel like I should apologize for getting so excited yesterday about the possibilities of a board free from “the petty bickering”. I somehow jumped straight past the part where it would be sad and frustrating to have a limit on commentary.
It’s a “privilege” to take part in your forum however it is structured.
Hey everyone, there’s no longer a 3 post limit!!!
Instead, there’s a red flag at the side of posts to report inappropriate and abusive comments.
How do I give out a red flag?
You click on the offending comment. You’ll see the flag in the top right corner.
And what does a little green flag mean?
It means your comment will be reviewed by the George Baker Selection.
Are you colorblind?
How do you post a gif?
If you’re at giphy, you just click share then copy gif link.
Then you just post the link in the comments.
You’ve posted gifs before. I remember you posting this one.
Nevermind that. How do you pronounce it? I say gif.
The guy who created them calls them jif, the same as the peanut butter, but it’s morphed colloquially to a hard-g sound.
What I would love to know is how to post GIFs and photos. I’ve tried unsuccessfully so many times 😔.
*Edit – I need read everything before commenting, thank you Ryan!
You click on it, to the right of each post, at the top where the paper clip hangs out.
Wonder how many flags DSF would get for posting a receipe? 🙂
Those looked pretty amazing, I miss those.
We’ll see. Initially, there might be some people that come out gunning for him, but I’d imagine that gets old quickly.
None. He would get the flag for changing the recipe once the rest of us had baked the cake. He would get a flag for posting a recipe for butter tarts when the rest of us were discussing Barbeque. 🙂
Barbecued cake is the best 🙂
HaHa!
For the record, DSF is a lot like Randle. Too much of anything is not a good thing. 🙂
But alas, some people were born to live at the extremes, and inclusiveness means inclusiveness.
I wonder how many red flags would be handed out if Dennis King were the moderator? 🙂
Not only would there be no fans in the stands, there would be no players left on the field, and certainly no executives left in the front offices. 🙂
#ScorchedEarthPolicy
Dennis is a good man, very insightful. I’ve noticed a few comments about him on here recently, not sure why folks are mad at him.
Unvarnished truth is hard for some to handle.
I love Dennis King. Another brother who lives at the extremes.
Dude is funny and original. His insights are “vivid” and refreshing.
You should #*@%&ing have him on your @#$%@ing radio show for @$#%$^ing sure!
Wholly H E double hockey sticks. Does he ever flail the flesh off of Spector in public. (and other MSM personalities)
His schtick would be banned in places like China. (or Canada if not for the internet)
Dennis is a semi-regular guest on Sunil Agnihotri’s The SuperFan Podcast. His spots are always well worth a listen though not at work! Dennis tends to varnish his truths with colourful descriptors to put it mildly. And to this transplanted Newfoundlander his accent & certain turns of phrase make me smile (though often through a wince at the actual point being made).
On a recent walk I listened to 2 such podcasts, first a recent one (just before Christmas I believe) about the Oilers’ current woes, then the next popped up from back in October when they happened to be 5-0-0. I’ll give Dennis full credit, he hammered the undefeated Oil just as hard, & his cautionary words at that time bore the ring of truth in the retrospect of subsequent events.
This encapsulates my experience of Dennis’s work as well.
(encapsulates: express the essential features of (something) succinctly.)
Speaking of the ring of truth, Dennis is “very” hard on MANY main stream media figures. Some who are very close to you.
Do you find it at all offensive? Or does it more just come with the job/territory?
I find lots of anti-media commentary in general to be a little to a lot offensive. The whole “enemy of the people” schtick that has driven the narrative in some corners is beyond that into dangerous territory.
My coworkers both make their living in MSM, though not in the sports department. Our hockey blog consists of three distinct voices and a respectful relationship among the three of us. The opinions of outsiders are just that, opinions, and they are fully entitled to them. As am I to mine.
Your first sentence is indeed a straight forward statement of fact.
As an outsider, I can only imagine how it might affect me. But I think I would develop a sort of pack mentality, where I would default to protecting and defending my media brothers/family.
I also think I would become either desensitized to the “opinions” of outsiders, or worse, I’d be second guessing myself as to the meaning/intent of the myriad outsider opinions.
I would suppose you develop a trusted circle and lean on and enjoy those interactions and that aspect of the business.
Thank you for your time.
Dennis is a very knowledgeable guy. I got to know him here in years past and follow him on Twitter. Just the occasional positive comment from him would be great to break up the narrative a little. Most of what he says is true but every so often a ray of sunshine is nice.
So you might agree that too much of anything is a bad thing, 🙂
I think Dennis believes “he is the ray of sunshine” in an otherwise dim world.
Dennis deploys visible-light-disinfection to kill up to 99.9% of bullshit on surfaces
If Dennis were to read this ^ he might choose this as a tag line on his accounts.
“Dennis King: A ray of sunshine in an otherwise dim world”
Where dim is a double entendre for “dark/not well lit” as well as “dimwitted”
I don’t want to muddy the waters, but this could be an issue. The guy gets 20 downvotes for posting his name. Hopefully, people are mature, knowing they are creating headaches if they recklessly flag someone.
How many red flags before a post disappears?
This should work.
Initially I thought it was “downvotes” that would lead to posts being deleted or a poster in moderation.
This is more of a “report abuse” button and I am hopeful the community, as a whole, is mature enough not to abuse the abuse button.
