The Edmonton Oilers were the saddest of organizations from 2010 through 2015. The only day of the year the franchise could give the ‘high hat’ to the rest of the NHL was on draft lottery day. You see the spoils here. Connor McDavid at 1.50 pts-game, Leon Draisaitl at 1.17. Hell, Taylor Hall and the Nuge are sporting quality numbers more than a dozen years after their first NHL games.
There is some disappointment here. Kailer Yamamoto priced himself out of a sweet role on RW with one of the Glimmer Twins (most often Leon), or more accurately couldn’t cover the bet his salary increase required of him. There is success outside the first round too, in the person of Ryan McLeod.
You know, one of the reasons Edmonton’s drafts since 2015 are perceived as being poor is the logjam created by trades, free agency and those high selections. 97, 29, 93 are all still here, as is Darnell Nurse, Vincent Desharnais, Stuart Skinner, Evan Bouchard and Dylan Holloway. At any given time, depending on the No. 7 defenseman (or if the Oilers are in possession of a No. 7 defenseman), the homegrown Oilers combine for about 40 percent of the roster. That doesn’t include Sam Gagner, for your information.
What might we see from an organization that had a bunch of high picks, 40 percent of the roster already established as an integral part of the organization, and a fan base that didn’t think the amateur scouts were producing?

- Oilers in 2023-24: 29-16-1, 59 points in 46 games
The Oilers have put themselves in position to secure third place in the Pacific Division and could go even higher. The wins must keep coming. I’m confident in this team.
One of the things we’ll talk about tomorrow is the tweaks of the lines and pairings. I’m not convinced any of the adjustments will last, and some might not see the light of day. I do think Evan Bouchard is emerging as a bigger force at five-on-five, and a Kulak-Bouchard pairing with increased offensive zone starts might be an interesting wrinkle.
WHAT MIGHT WE SEE
From 2013-2022, a full decade of drafts, Edmonton has produced some of the best talent on the planet. No extra credit, of course, but let’s be fair and list all of the men who are currently in the NHL and their spot on team depth charts.
- Connor McDavid, No. 1 center
- Leon Draisaitl, No. 1 center (Oilers have two)
- Stuart Skinner, starting goaltender
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, No. 1 LW
- Taylor Hall, No. 1 LW (injured)
- Darnell Nurse, top-four defense
- Evan Bouchard, top-four defense
- Ethan Bear, top-four defense
- John Marino, top-four defense
- Ryan McLeod, No. 3 center
- Jesse Puljujarvi, No. 3 RW
- Dylan Holloway, No. 3 LW
- Vincent Desharnais, third-pairing defense
- Mike Kesselring, third-pairing defense
- William Lagesson, No. 7 defenseman
- Caleb Jones, No. 7 defenseman
- Kailer Yamamoto, No. 4-5 RW
This doesn’t include names like Philip Broberg or Phil Kemp. These are men who are on NHL rosters and active. So, over the 10-year period, the scouts have found 17 NHL players.
Of those, 10 are serving in what I call foundation roster spots (top two lines, top two pairings, starting goalie and No. 3 center). Four of those foundation pieces (Skinner, Bear, Marino, McLeod) were chosen outside the first round of the draft. In all, eight of the 17 (the previous four, plus Vincent Desharnais, Mike Kesselring, William Lagesson and Caleb Jones) arrived via a selection after the first-round concluded.
This does not include the myriad traded selections. I didn’t cheat to make it look good. In fact, if I started in 2012 and went to 2021, Erik Gustafsson and Jujhar Khaira (potentially) could have been added.
For me, almost all of the complaints about Oilers scouts are directly tied to trades by the general manager. Don’t like the fact that the Oilers passed on Jasper Wallstedt? Please point me to the scout who made the deal.
The Oilers drafting over these years hasn’t been perfect, and I’ll be honest it looks to me as though the kids in Bakersfield with the best chance to make a show of it in the NHL are rugged souls Max Wanner and Jayden Grubbe.
That understood, I’m thrilled at the smart draft bets that are Carter Savoie, Tyler Tullio, Maxim Berezkin, Xavier Bourgault, Matvey Petrov, Shane Lachance. You have to draft talent, and a big part of the puzzle is offense.
Math can help. It isn’t the only thing. I had Ethan Bear at No. 38 in 2015, based only on math. The Oilers had to go out and find that man, and they did. I know we all have our favourites but the draft is not a purchase at the store and it is not an exact science.
Every man who has held a job in NHL scouting has a track record that includes the good and the bad. Bob Green is often taken to task over Griffin Reinhart and that’s fair (even though he was a monster talent in junior). Green also watched over much of the success you see on the NHL ice across the league today. I believe he was all over Stuart Skinner (as an example) based on post-draft comments.
I miss the days when we could have a nuanced conversation. Where the bad was aggressively debated but there was also time to let the sunshine in and acknowledge the good. In the life of a franchise, there are many good and bad things.
Tyler Wright got fired, and I assume there were reasons. My list did not favour Dylan Holloway but he looks like a player. A real test of an Oilers fan today is acknowledging that the full record on Tyler Wright’s drafting for the Oilers is not yet complete. I’m not certain many of you reading this would agree, and for that I am so very sad for the future of nuanced discourse.

Good rebound win. Eventually. Had me worried for a bit but, just as they did throughout the streak, they got it done.
I liked the Pissy & Vinegar line (did I see that here somewhere?) of 29-91-90. Who didn’t, right? Interesting dynamic and not nice to play against. Looks like a salty playoff line…
97 is an extraterrestrial. How he hasn’t been secretly black bagged and whisked away to some underground, gov’t sponsored black ops site for genetic testing is beyond me… I was lucky enough to witness the rise and dominance of 99 and to now have a 2nd coming of that level of talent, in this city, in my lifetime, is truly astounding. The Hockey Gods have smiled upon us…
Mad props to Calvin ‘Don’t Call Me Captain’ Pickard. That is a man excelling in his role. Carry on sir!
Stauff said that Kane is now the fastest Oiler to ever to get 7 hattricks (fewest games).
Good stuff! He was due for a breakout game. On pace for 30ish with nagging maladies… Such a beauty.
Well you certainly can’t say we’re peaking too early. Even during the streak we had some fortunate outcomes from streaky play.
We know how to win… lot’s of room for improvement.
Took them two periods to remember how they need to play but atleast they found that extra gear. If not for those huge early saves by Picks we’d be done for. I would think the guys are pretty comfortable playing in front of him. They know he’s got game and I hope management recognizes this. No upgrade required. Goalies have been a bit underrated early in our streak but I think everyone knows that they’ve given us chances that we maybe didn’t deserve.
Sure liking the top two lines now! Third super fast! Once they get used to each other, they’re gonna be dangerous!
Not sure if I like these new D pairs, though. Dunno what was wrong with the old pairs, really…
Hopefully they still remember that it takes hard work and determination to win tomorrow night. Should take two periods to get going, you would think.
Funny how after years of soft goals, goals on first shots of the game and wandering gaffs, that a ‘competent’ back up is dearly appreciated.
Before Skinner, I can’t remember an Oilers back up that actually put up decent numbers.
Hats off to Captain Picard!
97 pass to Hyman was ridiculous.
Anyone else in the league and it’s the highlight of the week, but just another regular play for 97
thru a stick and 2 skates, all in angular motion – the man is a wizard
the slo-mo on it was ridiculous.
An alien skates among us. We are blessed.
Broberg to Pederson at the circles, cross ice to Lavoie for the PP OT winner.
Rodrigue with 40 saves on 42 shots.
Woof. Perry got away with murder out there tonight. There was a 2-on-1 in the third where as it was forming he interfered just enough with the second forward to thwart it.
This guy sure knows how to walk the line. We have a proper villain on our team. Kane is the bully. Perry is that guy that’s sneaky.
Nice to feel like the referees did us a favour for once. I wish they’d do it against a Colorado or Vegans for once..
Villainy has been lacking on this team for a long time. Welcome aboard Mr Perry!!!
This line will stick and easily be the most hated line in the whole league. You could probably find a centerman in the league who is more chippy than Drai but Drai’s style of play is also super annoying to play against. Dmen hate playing against guys who coax them into board battles they can’t win.
Perry might’ve got a pass tonight in Anaheim … a ll the more reason to be thankful for what he brings
He’s got a preternatural ability to sense when the ref is looking the other way before doing something completely filthy. Diehard Ducks fans must have just been flabbergasted that he just did to them what they watched him do to so many other teams when he was wearing their jersey through his prime years.
That was the single most deliberately dirty play I’ve seen an Oiler execute in decades.
Ladies and gentleman … The Worm.
Well they can’t all be Picasso’s but will take the win. That was a pretty ugly game. Hoping we see a better performance tomorrow night. I think I would like to see Perry stay on line 2 at least for a few more games. The D shuffle not so much.
Champs gotta win ugly sometimes
Oh the irony with all of this recent Kane talk.
Also, Perry’s slashing the goalie stick : p
That’s a big win going into LA tomorrow night
The hottest team in the NHL, even if they lost to the Kniggits.
Well, they did what they needed to do tonight (and absolutely nothing more).
They did do what they needed to do though.
Good game by Kane. Big block by Vinny who had a high event game tonight. Dria was lucky he didn’t get called on that crosscheck with 3 mins left. Good comeback win just a bit sloppy.
Those hats came onto the ice so fast, they were basically in the camera view before he even completed the shot. Hilarious.
Zero chance Kane was coming off the ice without a hat trick there.
BOOM!!! A healthy Kane is a sight to behold!
Evander Kane Streak commenced
Good thing you quoted this or Original
Pouzar might have been pissed
Kane can still fire up the jets.
That was impressive. at the end of a shift to
Part of me wonders if the Oilers brought the attitude that they only needed 3 or 4 good shifts to win this game. Because they’ve been pretty awful. But good for Kane.
Citizen Kane!
Hatty for Kane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The 41st shot against Rodrigue results in the 2nd goal against – a shot from the point through a big screen.
2-2 with less than 5 to go.
Shots are 41-15 for San Jose.
Perry is starting to rub off on Leon now.
LOL
Leo was already pissy… Pissier? 😁
Stauff mentioned during the break that he knows Drai was playing injured for the first half of the season. He looks fully healthy to me tonight! Perhaps the break did him good (even though he had to lace them up in Toronto).
The Oilers have been really sloppy in the d-zone tonight.
Ekholm has struggled hard tonight to my eye.
Agreed, the puck is not his friend tonight
He has had a lot of company!
BIG shot block by Nurse – just more of the same from the big guy.
The team should think about taking away time and space in the last 8 minutes here……
Honest question: can we give up on Brown?
Yup. They should. There will be a better player available at the deadline for essentially nothing.
Yes please
Well he hasn’t helped the PK tonight…..
I get the premise of what they were trying to do in the summer, but yah its time to pull the plug. There’s 5 forwards in OKC that are more useful
No there surely are not.
I’d rather see a 34 year old Sam Gagner on a nightly basis than more Brown.
(I’d also rather see a Raphael Lavoie, but I dont think that’s happening)
Gagner was directly responsible for a goal against in each of the last two games he played.
He was alot better than Foegele tonight (who was on for a goal against at 5 on 5 and on the PK).
Brown had 2 shots on goal. Not bad.
They were muffins. Brown can’t shoot. And he seems allergic to getting into the crease where muckers like him go to score goals.
Send him to the pressbox ASAP.
These passes by Superman are something to behold …. 🙂
BOOM!!! Dynamic duo!!! You could just feel the urgency out there!!!
You could see that PP goal coming.
Executioner shot.
Could have scored 4 goals on that PP.
Neon Leon strolls down electric avenue to pull ahead.
BOOM!!! Hyman goes to the net for a Connor tap in pass!!! The guy just knows where to go!!!
Amazing. McDavid is such a crowd pleaser.
That’s a lovely tying goal. What a pass by McDavid, and Hyman was just where he needed to be.
What a frigging pass by 97!!!!!
Nice.
Hyman in the rough!
Maybe Oilers should be looking at Ryan Srome for a deadline acquisition.
Had some good legs tonight. 3L center
He’s a RHC/ RW . So he’d be a good fit. But makes $5M with term for 3 more years after this one.
man, I think Vinnie is our best d-man right now, in every aspect. Positioning, defending, passing, not making stupid decisions. Watch Nurse out there with him, he is a tire fire of decision making right now and Vinnie is somehow keeping it stable.
Geez this is tough to watch. Ducks winning a lot of battles.
McLeod is playing well.
Exactly. Getting out worked and out battled right now. That didn’t happen very often in the last few weeks.
Gotta get it in gear, here.
October
And the trees are stripped bare
Of all they wear
What do I care?
October
And kingdoms rise
And kingdoms fall
But you go on
And on
Maybe instead of blendering the backend who just went 16-1, the coach should have just got his team back up to pace after a ten day break?
Nah, he knows what he has in the regular pairs. This is a fishing trip to see what else may rhyme. Its a good idea imo.
Seeing some old bad habits creeping back into our game. Can’t forget about our own zone, fellas…
Great shot but what the heck is going on with our pk?
What happened to Gibson?
Lower body injury.
His balls shrivelled up… 😉 Oil haven’t been kind to him recently.
Ducks are starting to wilt under the pressure. Kane got the party started and the rest of the guys(mostly) decide to engage.
Wasn’t sure about Perry but starting to warm up to him. If we were playing a game against Kane and Perry on a line, I’d be screaming at the tv!
Im still screaming, actually, but in a totally different way! lol
The 2nd line and Bouchard are all over the offensive zone.
I think Kane & Perry make good bookends.
