2023-24 Game 68: Oilers at Maple Leafs

by Lowetide

If life was fair and just, Zach Hyman would be the main topic of discussion on HNIC this evening. Hyman was an impact player in Toronto, the team slow-played, low-balled and acted indifferent about their winger, and the Oilers scooped him up for just money. He has 48 goals, he’s a hammer and a unique talent. Tonight is the perfect backdrop to discuss little old Edmonton, frozen winters, rows of refineries, working men and women plus gigantic trucks that only back in to parking stalls (apparently) stole a helluva talent while the Toronto Maple Suits bet on “coming home” being worth millions. Ken Holland won a high stakes game. DNB wrote about Hyman here this morning.

That’s a helluva story, you know. I’ve been watching Canadian drama television since John Vernon (from Zehner, SK) starred in Wojeck, and I think a television series about the Maple Leafs general manager trying to build a contender would be fantastic. Kind of like the movie Draft Day. You’d have to tone down Harold Ballard, though, no one would believe a character like that could exist in real life.

THE ATHLETIC!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN MARCH

  • On the road to: SEA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • At home to: PIT (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • On the road to: BOS, CBJ, BUF, PIT (Expected 2-1-1) (Actual 2-1-1)
  • At home to: WAS, COL, MON, BUF (Expected 2-1-1) (Actual 3-0-1)
  • On the road to: TOR, OTT, WPG (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: LAK, ANA (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 8-5-2, 18 points in 15 games
  • Actual March results: 7-1-2, 16 points in 10 games
  • Oilers in 2023-24: 42-21-4, 88 points in 67 games

The Oilers are +52 in goal share according to NHL.com, only Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche have done better. Hockey-reference has them at +51. You have to go all the way back to, well, let’s see, last year to beat that number. The 2022-23 Oilers were +69 according to hockey-reference. This is a Stanley level hockey club. That’s a fact.

LATH AND PLASTER

In the 1960’s, houses could be cold even when the furnace or fireplace worked. Insulation was a thing, not as efficient (or safe) as the world we live in today. My Grandpa built his house, the interior walls were lath and plaster. By the time I got around to landing on earth, the house was 20+ years old and there were parts of the house you could see the lath in places. Always fascinated me, dust and lath for all the world to see. Stayed that way as long as lived there. This was 1965-69 in the lower mainland in BC, past Haney a few miles. Whonnock. Thornhill. Maple Ridge. Plaster falling, lath doing the full monty.

My next memory of things falling off houses came in about 1971. We lived 17 miles north of Maidstone. I was doing my homework in front of the fireplace in the living room. We lived in a giant school house, the ceilings must have been 16 feet high I swear to God. Anyway, I took a break, laying on my back, looking toward the ceiling. Something fell, my Dad blamed plaster (lath was nowhere to be seen) and holy hell did it hurt and it was a long time before we got everything out of my eye. The moral of the story: Don’t live in the 1960’s, kids!

Both memories are surrounded by hockey. In the 1960’s at Granpda’s lath shack, I was surrounded by people when HNIC’s broadcast began. As the game wore on, the men would play some cards at the table, come over to watch if things got tense, and Grandma and I would have the best spots on the sofa. It was an old sofa, with lots of places for a kid to fall five feet into the cushions. Perfect. Grandma had this quilt we’d share, that’s probably the warmest I’ve ever been. It’s one of my favourite memories.

In Maidstone, watching HNIC became more of a solo project. Dad remained angry at the Maple Leafs for trading Frank Mahovlich, and my brother had discovered girls and would soon buy a car. It was lonely during winters there, hockey kept me company.

Sometimes, we would be at Grandma’s house (three miles south of Maidstone) and it would be good times again. She was my hockey soulmate, truth to tell. I can only imagine what kind of comments she would leave on this blog on a day like today. Grandma was a Leafs fan. She loved Grandpa, but was possibly more attached to Johnny Bower. I miss all of the people from my youth. I look for connections to them. There’s one at 5 pm Edmonton time, live from Toronto on HNIC.

TONIGHT’S GAME

I don’t have much to say about the actual game, it’s going to be wild and filled with skill and mistakes. Best goalie wins, probably. I hope to see these two teams in the SCF. Sure Canada probably doesn’t survive, but what a way to go! Here are the five-on-five pts-60 since the trade deadline:

  1. Connor McDavid 5.54
  2. Mattias Ekholm 4.49
  3. Connor Brown 3.22
  4. Sam Carrick 2.81
  5. Zach Hyman 2.67
  6. Leon Draisaitl 2.56
  7. Warren Foegele 2.32
  8. Ryan McLeod 2.32
  9. Evan Bouchard 2.13
  10. Darnell Nurse 1.78
  11. Adam Henrique 1.62
  12. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 1.62
  13. Troy Stecher 1.42
  14. Mattias Janmark 1.19
  15. Corey Perry 0.94
  16. Evander Kane 0.73
  17. Brett Kulak .63
  18. Cody Ceci .61

I’ll be interested to see if Vincent Desharnais returns, and if the clubs rests a veteran. I don’t ask for much from the hockey Gods, but would love to see Hyman get No. 50 in Toronto. Music!

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

Friedman saying Hill left the Vegas-Jackets game early in the 3rd with an injury.

Rondo

Told you so.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

Knoblauch’s big problem is that McLeod does not score like a 2LW (look at his splits against QoQ) and Kane isn’t grabbing the spot with authority.

This puts him in a dilemma. Send out Drai to fall into an offensive Black Hole, look at his non-PP points before Xmas. Or he sets three guys with no history of pushing the river and asking them to push the river.

Gotta give Drai more time with McLeod and Foggy. Just leave them together for like five games not 2.3 periods.

The key to all of this is McLeod finding another gear offensively. He’s close to being in the right spots. But it’s not natural to him. He’s gotten this far by being safe. Needs to be more like Hyman. He’s got the speed, hands and shot to do this.

hunter1909

Oilers need Draisaitl to centre the 2nd line.

Draisaitl is probably one of the best ever NHLers at making his linemates effective as top 6 players as anyone ever in history.

Give him McLeod and Foegele and suddenly they’re coming through in the clinch. Left to their own, these wingers aren’t good enough.

Aye, this is the way.

Play em and believe in it Coach KK!

godot10

The Full “No Mas” by Bouchard against Matthews on the 3rd goal against was a true marvel to behold, complemented by “Jazz Hands” stick waiving defense at opposing forwards all night.

hunter1909

OH OKAY SO SWEARING GETS YOU SENT TO HELL. I TRIED TO DELETE THE BAD WORD BUT SINCE AM NOT GETTING ANY RESPONSE OTHER THAN THE AWAITING FOR APPROVAL… BLAH BLAH BLAH

So what’s your deal? Bitch about everything? If you’re so brilliant why aren’t you employed by a NHL team? Your diatribe wears thin after awhile. Not saying you don’t make some good points but after awhile your nauseating

Boil-in-the-Oil

Didn’t we once refer to it as “Schultzing“?

Boil-in-the-Oil

Thought I’d revisit my comment … cheers LT, I was close (no cigar). Those were troubling times with our “star” defender… who loved to wave his stick on the ice, as forwards zoomed around him. Pretty sure he was happy to leave.

Tarkus

Summarizing!

Hyman was not the only Oiler signee to score his 49th goal tonight, as Stefan did the deed for his first as an Oiler prospect. It was also his 100th point of the season.

Lachance and Mazura were held soupless in losses. We’ll know tomorrow whether their teams get selected for the Frozen Four.

Day stopped 15 of 17 in a 3-0 loss. Flint will finish 8th and face either London or Saginaw in the first round.

Bling

I was at the game tonight, some thoughts below:

Oilers came out strong, particularly the first line. Lots of puck possession. That 5 man unit of the 97 line and Ekholm/Bouchard really work well together, even if they were a touch off by their usual standard.

I’m always surprised/amazed by how good the pros are handling wobbly pucks in high danger areas. The D in particular are just magic.

I didn’t like the first few power play opportunities. A little blah. Too bad, because it seemed to shift the game’s momentum.

Some general thoughts: I do worry about team speed. I found lines 2-4 to be quite invisible. Maybe I am being too hard on line 2. Kane seemed out of sorts. Tough to load up the top like against a good team, you really need Nuge to deliver. The problem is, the supporting cast have real warts.

Henrique, IMO, was quite invisible. I’m a little surprised he is being regarded as a possible shutdown C. I’m not sure how that will work against any team with any semblance of speed.

I’m not sure what Carrick brings.

Ceci and Desharnais, to my eye, just couldn’t make any plays out there. Felt like the play was dying with them quite a bit. Ceci had a poor look in the second. Time in his corner to make a play, iced it.

Definitely don’t want to overreact to just one game, but it’s hard to believe that the speed of Holloway and Broberg is not needed. For sure you need one of them in there.

FabioRoberto

Concur:)

Good atmosphere? Good time, other than?

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

I remember the icing play but other than that I thought Ceci played well today.

His cut opened up the passing lane on the Perry goal. He got a few shifts with Nurse and I saw them good.

Funny Bissonness

The family and I took an 8 am flight this morning. The sports times on my phone didn’t update quickly so I thought the game started at 5 Pacific Time. I had a nap and set an alarm for 4:55. Missed the whole first period and woke up confused.

I think the Oilers took longer to wake up than I did. The Oilers can beat them 4 times out of 7. Once the Oilers got going they were the better team. Not Stu’s night. But I think Stu will be just fine. I have no issue with Pickard as backup, the man is solid and consistent. Stu is still my number 1, I’m a fan. Would’ve liked to see more physical push back. I liked the Janmark scrap.

godot10

This was 0% Stu’s fault. The Oilers were shit in front of him, starting at the top with McDavid and Bouchard.

Munny 2.0

They actually had some decent stretches. And then somebody would eff up.

McDavid was guilty on the 3 on 3 goal. Nurse on a goal, Boosh, Henrique. Just huge errors in crucial spots on the ice. But more than anything, for a bully team, they got pushed off their game early and hard.

This wasn’t about a lack of speed, this loss was about a lack of response in my opinion. They gave away a lot of mo on two powerplays where the Leafs completely out-physicalled them, gained mo from it and carried that play throughout the first.

In the second we came out strong and dictated a lot of play, started to match them physically. And then the gaffe and the goal and Leafs seized the mojo again. Someone below said it felt like the beginning of the season and the game seemed to have that shoot-yourself-in-the-foot feel.

Like they were feeling the pressure of the moment, playing in front of family and friends for bragging rights, when things went sideways…

Munny 2.0

Jackets with early 1-0 lead on the Kiniggits.

Munny 2.0

I am not convinced that running The Power Line is the best idea on the road.

With the other coach having last match, you’d think having Leon and Connor split would be the way to go. That has to be tougher on the other coach, no?

godot10

Yep. Knobby failed Coaching 101 today.

tapper

I turned this one off after the 2 Edmunson cross checks to Leon on the first PP. Kind of a clue as to how the night is going to play out. Thought there was a crackdown on those this year.

Thats exactly how Mtl got to the finals a few years back. Nothing magical or Cinderella. Just 3 D (Weber Edmunson and Chariot) playing under a different set of rules.

Nhl hockey is just more a sports entertainment than a professional sport sometimes.

teddyturnbuckle

I’m not starting Skinner next game. Pickard has earned every inch. He is actually outplaying Skinner at this point. Not putting this loss on Skinner but Pickard has been outstanding.

godot10

The fans always love the backup quarterback.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

Hard to think Holloway is worse than Carrick and/or Ryan at 4C. Not liking this Carrick experiment at all.

There’d be some decent pep on that like with CB and some snarl with the punchy Janmark.

KnightRain

Damn. Sure made it interesting!!! Had Laffs nation shitting a brick for the last 14 mins! lol Wish I woulda been able to watch the whole game but, man, that third was amazing!!!

winchester

Good try lads, you have the stuff, but poor game tonight.

Sanderson

Ffs Oilers. Know what? I hope you win this game, get to Ottawa, then get a 5am bag skate. Playing a full 60 minutes is a habit. If playing the Leafs on HNIC doesn’t make you do it, will the playoffs?

KnightRain

Laffs stopped skating, we started skating and their goalie broke trying to save his team…brutal…

delooper

Cold goalie with 3 mins remaining. There’s a chance.

KnightRain

BOOM!!! Fire wagon hockey!!! You wanted it, you got it!!! Drai with the finish!!!

winchester

We’ll now look who’s laughing

Munny 2.0

Drai gets us to respectability.

Let’s see if we can make those Leafs shake and fall

delooper

It looks like the linesman missed an offside call on the last play.

KnightRain

Janmark!!! Not taking any crap!!! That’s a real team guy, there!!!

winchester

That’s right, Domi being a dick. I want them to start the game not taking any nonsense.

godot10

He also didn’t stay with his mark on the first goal against. Set the tone for Oiler crappiness for the entire game.

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

I love Perry. Such a POS.

KnightRain

BOOM!!! Old school goes where the goals are scored!!!

Munny 2.0

Perryplay goal

Munny 2.0

Nice to see kane with a contribution

Diablo

They did score 5 goals in the third period of last game …

Scungilli Slushy

In that heated scrum a bit back Connor was the most aggressive at protecting

That is seriously messed up. Very seriously. Big boy pants time the rest of them

KnightRain

BOOM!!! Gotta get one to start a comeback!!! Hyman from his office!!!

Munny 2.0

High Man breaks the goose egg

813.52Ran

The Oilers don’t need five goals.

They just need two by Hyman to poke the Leafs in the eye.

813.52Ran

Check.

Scungilli Slushy

They post the stats and the Oilers are crushing

But you have to have offensive sense. Odd man rush and the puck goes trailer, the other two skate right past the net to be nowhere near the rebound

This is basic hockey, right? If you can’t set up well you don’t score well when it’s hard to

For years. FFS

Munny 2.0

Little puck management and where’s the backtrack tonight?

I mean we can poke fun at Henrique all we want but where the hell was the rest of the team?

Sitting in the OZone cheating for offense in the hope that Henrique can make the play. Been a lot of that tonight.

Those mental errors they’ve been building into their game these past few weeks are coming back to haunt them against a real team.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

I agree with the sentiment but not for that play.

They were all low in the O Zone cause the had full control and were cycling. Henrique took it back and bobbled it at the blue line.

That’s why everyone was offside lol.

Munny 2.0

Lol, that was not full control. THREE Leafs read it correctly. Zero Oilers.

SayItAin'tSo, Gretz, SayItAin'tSo!

Huh?

They took the zone with 19 seconds left on the PP, Henrique won the initial zone battle, reset to Bouchard, they cycled and had two ish shots on net and Henrique bobbled up a pass back to the point.

When he turned it over they’d been on the leafs zone for 25 seconds.

KnightRain

Sure glad I wasn’t able to catch the first two periods…I’ll watch the replay tonight but I bet it ain’t pretty…
Too late to have a scotch? Might as well. Sure can’t hurt…

delooper

It hasn’t been awful. The Oilers are playing okay, but this is a game where okay isn’t enough.

But there’s been a bunch of dumb little glitches. Bad passes, missed coverage, not skating for pucks that should be competitive.

KnightRain

Pk sure looked good…

Boil-in-the-Oil

Pardon me, but it has been awful. Blunder after blunder, 2 dead powerplays, 2 X 3-on-1’s, defence missing in action, forwards ignoring when defence has pinched… just awful.

W

Sister-in-law just texted that she has switched to wheel of fortune.

winchester

I notice two things, the first is that playing both your top centres on the same line allows Toronto to focus on them way too much.

Then we see the return of the playoff game that is effective, particularly taking out top two Edmonton players. As the panel suggested, the rest of the team has to be running some interference. I really did not see any effective hits by the oil.

last point, Toronto is getting quite a bit of energy from its youth. Oilers don’t have any.

Although this game is exposing some weaknesses, there must have been 59 bouncing pucks up for grabs and 58 landed on lLeafs sticks. One of those games.

813.52Ran

That was some fancy footwork by Bouchard to avoid getting in the play on that goal against. Pretty, pretty amazing!

oilinthepeg

Whole family are Leafs fans. C’mon Oilers, why you gotta do me like this!!??

Prairie_Sentinel

Aaaaand the Leafs will start the third on the PP

winchester

It is one thing to hammer a team 5-0. It is another to be up 5 goals and keep running their top players.

Some fights coming in the third period.

wait….probably get beat in those as well

wood99

I think when the game is going like it is tonight the coach could send some messages to his team…

Pretendergast

Scratch the Captain I heard that works.

wood99

I didn’t say get silly😃

fishman

As much as I HATE the Leafs they are certainly the better team tonight and are kicking ass. Also hate the fact it’s a Sat HNIC. Going to have to forget this one and be ready for Senators tomorrow.

Scungilli Slushy

So, I guess they still need to have learning lessons. Can’t win much that matters if you can’t play your best game most games. Kick ass reg season, sometimes, golf early, get paid. Very Leafs

Scottie beam me up

delooper

Call me crazy, but I feel like we’re seeing the positive side of the Toronto sports media tonight. More often than not, they’re really bad for sport, but tonight is different.

Over the past two days we’ve been drowned in fluff pieces about Hyman getting his 50th goal tonight. The Oilers have been drowned in feel-good, sentimental questions. It’s like they’ve been lulled into the Maple Leaf trap.

StixMalone

Ok coach make some changes. Start Pick in the 3rd. Split McDrai. Change the D pairs. Bench some players and show you won’t put up with the bullshit…..

Derek

The team commitment to defense is stunning.

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

My geriatric cat can play better defence!

Kert

Don’t say geriatric too loud or Holland will show up with a contract in hand.

Diablo

Whole team is getting embarrassed by the Leafs tonight.

wood99

We are not mentally sharp at all tonight. Mistakes all over the ice. At least it is a team effort😉

Scungilli Slushy

Stu is fighting the puck. Time to change
