When all of this is over finally, and Connor McDavid captains a Stanley Cup champion in Edmonton, I would like to return to the scene of the crime. It’s the top item on this 2016 review of 2015 deals. Yes. If this thing results in Stanley, the sins of the past will be forgiven. Why? That’s how it works.
Q AND A
- I forgive nothing! That’s your right as a fan. All I ask is that you take the entire record into account and not fade the sins of the past.
- What the hell does that mean? Ken Holland should be criticized for missteps. That applies to all managers.
- Glen Sather didn’t make any mistakes! The Miro Satan trade says hello.
- One trade in 20 years! You’re all ass all the time! I’m certain that’s true, but I insist you look at everyone’s record, not just what is in front of you.
- Fine. Worst deals by GM. Sather had few, but Satan was obviously going to score in the NHL and that was right at the beginning of his career. Kevin Lowe? I’ll say not making the Corey Perry for Mike Comrie deal. That would have been a game changer.
- What about Craig MacTavish? MacT was a good trader, his missteps were things like challenging Jeff Petry to be better and then walking him to free agency as the team’s best defenseman. The worst trade he made was Devan Dubnyk for Matt Hendricks, but the sin was in evaluation. Dubnyk was a real goalie, MacT didn’t think so. You have to be right on those things.
- We don’t have all day, so name the worst Chiarelli deal. I’ll go with the Reinhart acquisition because the draft picks could have grown with the cluster. If the Oilers had chosen Joel Eriksson Ek and Brandon Carlo, as has been rumoured, the entire decade rolls out differently. I think that 2015 draft, really the hour between the McDavid pick and the Reinhart trade, pointed out the fatal flaw in Edmonton’s team building at that time.
- I thought you’d say the Taylor Hall trade. Definitely second on the list and a tragedy. Adam Larsson was and is a fine shutdown defenseman, but you don’t trade a unicorn for him. I would also list the Ryan Strome for Ryan Spooner deal, you can’t send away that kind of talent and get nothing in return.
- Now we get to Holland. Worst deal. For me, it was the Duncan Keith trade. The player was far better than his numbers indicated, but even then Keith played protected minutes in his Edmonton season. The assets out (Caleb Jones, the pick that turned into Jeremy Langlois) were fine, but taking on the entire Keith cap hit should have fetched a first-round pick from Chicago. What’s more, the Blackhawks used that money to sign Seth Jones long term and that directly impacted the Darnell Nurse negotiations. It was a net terrible overall.
- Any others? The Andreas Athanasiou deal was costly and then the organization walked him because of the pandemic. I think the original deal was too much, but not signing him was the right play. I think he would have been open to more criticism had he signed Athanasiou.
- So, you like Holland’s trades? Mostly, yes. I think the team has improved smartly since Brad Holland became AGM and took charge of pro scouting. The deals for Mattias Ekholm, Brett Kulak, Adam Henrique and Klim Kostin have been net positive and have the team in position to contend for the Stanley Cup this spring.
- So, you think the organization has the proper structure in place? Closer than before, yes. You know, Tyler Dellow was in place in July 2015, and I do believe (no evidence beyond the fact the signing was an outlier compared to Edmonton’s own past) he impacted the signing of Andrej Sekera. That’s the kind of signing Edmonton needed then, and needs now.
- What have you noticed that is different? It’s endless. The Reinhart trade motivation came from his junior career, which was substantial and impressive. It did not come from the latest intel, that would have been provided from someone who could have reported on his difficulty adjusting to the AHL. Reinhart’s foot speed lagged badly in pro hockey and it was recognized by Todd McLellan right at the start of the 2015 training camp. Chiarelli kept talking him up, McLellan kept not playing him. I don’t think we’d get that situation now.
- What about Philip Broberg? I think the organization knows he’s ready, but Broberg’s development took a back seat this season. Vincent Desharnais won the available RH job and the lefties in front of him stayed healthy. Broberg is miles better as a defensive option than Reinhart in 2015.
- Who is the next general manager? No idea. I do think the team has come a long way in the last five years and ownership is unlikely to tear it all down. If I’m betting your money, it would be on the younger Holland. Perhaps Jeff Jackson has an external candidate in mind, but the people in place now are building a fine resume in my opinion.
The Lowdown hits the air at noon today, Sports 1440. We’ll talk to Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal about the importance of winning tonight’s game. So many things are going in Edmonton’s favor, we’ll chat about the Stars-Golden Knights and the Predators hanging on against Vancouver. You can reach me at Lowetide on twitter, in the comments section or on the Sports 1440 text line at 1.833.401.1440 directly.
Leon Effing Draisaitl
For me, he was right there with McDavid for players of the series.
His back track and work in the defensive slot the last 3 games was awesome – he broke up so many plays in the defensive zone. He wasn’t making his risky passes at the opposition blue but making smart plays and, holy hell my goodness, what a bull!
Oilers in five. That’s not me stating the result of this Kings series. That’s me predicting the result of the next round.
Kempe is unreal. Wish he was on the Oil, lol…
If you look at the stats, you’ll see that he and Fiala have a similar number of points, but if you watch them play, you can see that Kempe has significantly more skill, at least to my eyes.
His mid-air deflection goal in Game 2 showed a Crosby-esque level of hand-eye coordination.
As I’m drinking a Scotch in celebration of the series win, I’m very pleased with the result, but I’m still wondering why the Oilers powerplay is getting so much praise tonight. They were a rather pedestrian 1 for 5 with the man advantage. 😀
Not sure if serious? Last 2 goals were within a couple seconds of the extra man coming onto the ice, still not in the play.
What’s that “swishing” sound?
Pretty sure he was using a little bit of sarcastic…
Ha! Amazing comment
This was a solid game. The only questionable calls to me were Fiala and Perry penalties, but they both cancelled each other out. They were patient almost to a fault in the first period, but it did pay off with the first goal. That 3rd period was incredibly well executed. No stupid turnovers in the offensive zone, taking some offensive chances but not risking it all and getting caught back on odd man rushes. i think they had the better chances by and large in the 3rd.
Credit to LAK (as much as I hate them), they have some skilled guys and are a legitimate playoff team.
Really happy to see the praise for RNH (finishing with > 1pt/game).
A seemingly rejuvenated playoff Kane has been a joy, with 3 even strength points in the series. If they could have operated on him earlier so that he would in time for the playoffs, that very well would have been the right choice, but it is always a risk.
Leading the Oilers in ES points this series was Hyman (5) followed by Bouchard (4). Hyman’s 7 goals in round 1 have him halfway to Pisani
I do worry about how the top 2 lines were neutralized even strength for the last few games (serving a blueprint for other teams). McDavid and Draisatil also had 3 even strength points, but we all know that 2 of them this game were really PPP. However, this came at a cost to the Kings, including the penalties drawn, and it will be a new series against a non 1-3-1 team.
Why doe’s Petriangelo get away with his BS again? Jackass.
Because Vegas.
Well as expected and that’s good news as the Oilers are finally meeting expectations. But it’s awful watching LAK. Good news is that they are at home and can take a few days to heal up bangs and bruises. They will need an equally ruthless approach to dispatch VAN or NAS and be in good shape to face a difficult opponent in the semi-finals. Next.
Just heard Blob Stauffer mention Dubois would only be a 1/3 buyout this summer….didn’t realize he was that young…buyout is less than $2M for next 2 years, then $2.7M, $3.8, $3.8, $3.8, $2.8 and $1M for another 6 years..
This would be a remarkable development.
There was a lot of chatter about a buyout over at the Kings blog (comments) during this series.
F-YES!
that is all
I had a feeling the Oilers were going to win this game. The look of dread in Doughty’s eyes in the pre-game interview. He had lost some confidence.
Yeah, I was really surprised by Doughty’s honest admissions about Oiler depth in the Spector article. A little like Sutter’s admission in the middle of the Calgary series that they couldn’t stop McDavid.
Next year we break out the brooms!
Yes, its a trend! Will the league give us the series in 3 games the year after, though?!? haha
w00t!
Kings are sure wishing they didn’t get that last single point in their last regular season game that popped them above Vegas and brought them another series with the Oil.
To be fair, they’re not match for Dallas either
Kings were dangerous to start the series but faded badly, and funny they could not solve the Oilers defensive game.
I loved the result, but didn’t love the Oilers game plan, I don’t think it played to their strengths.
I don’t know if we’ll see same game plan next series, but it looks like another tool they now have available.
I enjoyed the series, and I enjoyed Coach/Oilers adapting, switching up game plans to do what worked. Thanks Oilers.
4 (ish) PP goals is not exactly a strong recipe for success in rounds 2&3.
The commitment to defense is really the only proven path to glory
5 on 5 play drew lots of those calls, tho
Good point
Skinner was only slightly better than big save dave in this one.
Meh, Skinner was fine. Certainly better than he needed to be.
Whomever is next, Vancouver or Nashville, it should be a fun series. Colorado looks likely in the semis and they’re going to be difficult.
worth noting, the oilers beat the kings… again…
…again
And again!
So cool to see two teams go at it like that and then immediately switch gears to congratulating each other in the handshake line. Could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I read Doughty’s lips when talking to McDavid and he said “go win it now.”
If anyone missed the nonsense Kyle Clifford tried to pull on Boko Imama in the handshake line when the Marlies were eliminated, it was classless. Showing sportsmanship in victory or defeat is so important.
Except for Arvidson. Not sure you guys caught that on your feed. I had to listen to Leah Hextall, who spent a good amount of time praising the la kings penalty kill
what Did he do?
As the were lining up he was shouting F@$& you repeatedly to someone. Couldn’t see who.
I saw that too. What was he protesting? The obvious penalty Draisaitl drew?
Could have been. He looked pretty sookie in the handshake line up too
Considering Clifford and Imama had already shook hands in the line, I’m thinking that something was said to start those shenanigans. Still no excuse for it, but context is important.
Vinnie Desharnais is getting more expensive after every damn game.
I mean I love it, but I hate it. Know what I mean?
He was fantastic tonight, and I really liked Kulak too.
But that corner battle while on the PK in the 2nd?
Man. Alive.
Legendary.
Seriously. He has officially transitioned into the D-man where when you notice he is on the ice in our zone, a sense of relief takes over, instead of anxiety with Ceci or Nurse and you’re constantly saying out loud, get it out get it out!
Yeah, I love that you mention Kulak here as well.
I would be ecstatic if he played well enough in these playoffs to price himself off our team.
Refs were favourable this year.
Yes can someone explain that???? Especially this game!
Apparently McDavid has *finally* paid his dues with the refs.
It’s so stupid. The refs cost us the 2017 series against Anaheim, and put us in a position to make it difficult to beat Chicago and Winnipeg too. I was mad at the time, and now that I see what fair reffing actually looks like, I’m even madder about having burned so much daylight on the McDrai window.
There once was a man called Big Save Dave
Facing Bouch bombs, he tried to be brave
A great attempt he made at a save
But over the goal line his glove did wave
An even strength trap he sure did crave
His beard is currently free to shave
Off elimination, he could not stave
And now they simply call him… Dave
Brilliant
Bravo!!!
Occasional Save Dave
0-4 playoff record and .786 SV%.
Sort of a version of Casey at the Bat, or in this case, Dave in the Net…
Nice rhyme. Reminds me of this song for some reason.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL9rZF4Z7Lk
lol…. well done.
Rest up boys! Awesome dispatch of the Kings. Round 2 woohoo
Now for the two remaining Western series to go seven games…
I quite enjoyed Los Lobos after this one.
I don’t know much about coaching and structures and details and what not but I feel that each of Knoblauck, Coffey, Gulutzan and Stuart had a great series.
This coaching staff rightly deserves credit! Remember where this team was?????
Goodness but does Louie love him how the Kings play.
Talentless hack likes talentless hacks.
Harsh.
Yeah, I like Louie, and if I forget I just need to listen to a Boston game for example.
It’s 82 games so we get tired a little.
He is empathetic though. He knew LA was finished and tried to cover for them a little.
Only quibble with the game is Draisaitl should have had a hat trick.
It was never a series of equals. Not remotely close.
The Kings suck.
PLD finishing the series with the worst fancies of any King. Chefs kiss.
Pack your shit Rob Blake, you’re done bud. Enjoy the unemployment line.
Play La Bamba 😎😎😎
To reuse a great quote, “GIt yer shinebox, Robbie..”
I think the only time I felt anxious during this series was that flukey deflection to make it 4-3.
LA went all in to make their team worse this season.
And in the process saved Winnipeg from a years-long rebuild. Hellebuyck re-signed in Winnipeg because Cheveldayoff fleeced LA so badly in that trade. That alone makes the Jets competitive for years to come.
Congratulations to the Edmonton Oilers, playing for the Pacific Championship for the first time since… 2 yrs ago!
Well done. Rest up, don’t party too hard. Take next opponents seriously.
That team has proper looks on its faces. They haven’t won a damn thing yet, but one box checked on the way and everyone mostly intact.
As it should be.
Wow… pissy Kings
LoL…Arvidsson was not a happy camper
Enjoy your 6, maybe 7-8 days of recovery boys – well earned.
What amazingly played third period.
McD looked a little sore by the end of the game. That was a physical 5 games.
I can’t like this enough.
Fantastic.
that’s gold
This might have won the internet for me
Wow
Oh what a rush.Nothing Closer to the Heart right now
This Oilers team is full of Cinderella Men
Nice game, Oilers.
That’s all folks.
First Canadian team to the second round!!!!!
When the levee broke, LA had no place to stay.
The Oilers got goals off four sticks, and now the Kings are going to California with an aching in their hearts.
Woooooooooooi!!
Stairway to Stanley!
Heartbreaker for the Kings, but the Oilers will ramble on to the second round. Thank you!
How many more times will the Oilers leave LA dazed and confused? Dunno, but it’s good times (Oilers) bad times (LA).
Even with the GA, what a 3rd period. Extremely impressive.
On to the next one they are, on to the next one.
Kings dusted in 4 or 5 – check.
They learned.
BOOM!!! Eat it, Queens!!! Your season ends on a penalty, like it should!!!
Automatic goal?
that should be a penalty shot
Shouldn’t that just be called a goal.
I don’t disagree. I was going to type “penalty shot with no goalie, at the very least” than decided aginst it
Yes it should be
Empty net penalty shots are called automatic goals.
I thought the ref was going to even it up with a Drai embellishment
Refs didn’t want to sit thru 20 minutes of hat collection.
These guys sure play the “luck” card alot
Finish Them!!!
Kings first o-zone time in a while.
Nurse puts it in the net…come on man.
Surprised they haven’t pulled their goalie.
Clench time!
Kings are frustrated.
Oilers are forcing them to play hockey.
I actually like that PlayAlberta ad. The guy’s I-couldn’t-care-less shoulders bouncing as the OS wrestler gets suplexed cracks me up every time
This series is coming-out-party for Vinnie. So reliable. He is ask good as Eks in the corners, separating man from puck.I’d pay him whatever.
