The Edmonton Oilers are a 4-3 team in a 3-2 league. This year’s team has some real holes and it’s fair to wonder if general manager Stan Bowman can fill enough of them between now and the deadline. The team’s dilemma can be summed up in one player: Ty Emberson. He’s clearly a good young defenseman but that’s not the same as saying he’ll be a trustworthy player in the Stanley Cup finals. Edmonton has those questions marbled through the roster. On the other hand, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Darnell Nurse and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins all contributed handsomely to a win in Salt Lake City last night. Tonight, the club will have a more difficult test, this time in Denver.
The Athletic article today is about the original sin of the Connor McDavid era, and what followed. Article is here.
WHAT TO EXPECT IN NOVEMBER
- On the road to: CAL (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- At home to: NJD, VEG (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 0-2-0)
- On the road to: VAN (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- At home to: NYI, NAS (Expected 2-0-0) (Actual 2-0-0)
- On the road to: TOR, MTL, OTT (Expected 1-2-0) (Actual 1-1-1)
- At home to: MIN, NYR (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 1-1-0)
- On the road to: UTA, COL (Expected 1-1-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
- Overall expected result: 8-5-0, 16 points in 13 games
- November results: 7-4-1, 15 points in 12 games
- Oilers in 2024-25: 12-9-2, 26 points in 23 games
The Oilers are right around my predicted point total for the month, with an inviting schedule in December. The team’s 26 points in 23 games is a 93-point pace and we’re finally in the window of a playoff spot. Of course, more is expected.
THE NUMBERS
The first thing we have to talk about is the Ekholm-Bouchard pairing. The duo are now 19-18 goals at five-on-five, but running 60 percent in expected goals. The problem? November results (8-12 goals in the last 10 games) have skewed the view for the team’s most trusted defensive tandem. Puck IQ has Ekhom running almost 40 percent of overall time versus elites (7:21 a night) with Bouchard (7:16) in the range. Brett Kulak (6:01) and Darnell Nurse (5:54) round out a clear top four, and all of these men have a DFF percentage (smart Corsi, like expected goals) well over 50 percent. It’s cherry when it’s humming, but the top pair hit a rut and the steering’s a little off now. By the way, Troy Stecher is also playing larger than expected minutes and is just shy of 50 percent. Emberson, at 42 percent DFF percentage versus elites, is the only worry. As always, sample size reminder.
The forwards looked rusty early, and Utah has some fine players (the Bjugstad line and Sergachev pairing were effective versus McDavid) but the club takes way too many penalties to survive in this league. Need to iron that out.
I was happy for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, his goal was pure Nuge. Such a smart and industrious player, and he had the boots to keep that breakaway and hold it until a perfectly placed shot ended the game in Edmonton’s favor. Music! Nuge is my favourite player-type, smart two-way guy with enough ammo to land among the top six scorers on the team most seasons. If Dave Keon had a son who played in the NHL, he’d look a lot like Nuge.
The five-on-five HDSC’s last night were filled with role players. Adam Henrique (two), Vasily Podkolzin (also two, plus a goal, Bowman will want to invite him over for dinner because he’s making the GM look smart) plus one each from Connor Brown, Brett Kulak, and then McDavid and RNH. This team needs secondary scoring, perhaps last night was a sign it’s getting closer.
Not much to say about tonight, check the Avs injured list for improved health and after that it’ll be all about the goaltending for both teams.
Jeff Skinner started that play and almost finished it – would have been big.
Fantastic game, I liked it as much if not more than the Ranger game. Two very different ways of winning. Now let’s hold on to this for a bit shall we.
This extremely mediocre start to the season has Edmonton tied for 10 in NHL points at US Thanksgiving weekend.
You know at the end of game when someone wants get cute it’s nice to have Nurse out there.
Last 10 games:
Colorado: 6-4-0
Oilers: 7-2-1
Coming in to the game tonight, since starting 0-3, since October 14, the Oilers had the sixth best points percentage in the league.
Team win. Depth shone through.
Two good games in a row for Skinner. Good sign
great game on many levels. PK has healed. PP looked good despite not scoring.
“Hockey Code”?!
The puck went right to his stick blade and instincts took over, but he pulled his shot and didn’t even wind up. He even visibly sighed. It was also a split second past the horn. Avs were just grumpy and looking for any excuse to start something.
What
AVS were going full throttle with 1 minute left while being down 4-1. I think the Oil were just saying, you want to keep going fine and poured on some pressure to close the game. Exactly right, don’t take that garbage.
I am with you. I do have to remember that I was likely a minority in watching the Colorado stream and hearing the Avs’ commentators, so my reactions were coming from that. They were going on about the Hockey Code and how Henrique was a terrible bad man etc. (implying he deserved to be jumped like he was). I disagree with that greatly, due to the context and factors of the situation.
Oilers are a 4-3 team*.
*unless they are playing Colorado
That’s how we shut down to finish games. Keep attacking and be smart with the puck!
Eat a stinky glove, Ludvig!!
Nurse erased him! lol So happy the old Nurse is back! I missed him, greatly…
Skinners best game of the season
Yes VG. They have some top drawer talent firing pucks at him
woooooooooooooooooot!!
16 in a row here we come!
I would call that a “very professional win” on the road.
Write it down, bottle it, keep that recipe, boys!!
BOOM!!! Nuge with the gravy!!!
Nuge earned that one with, by far, his best game of the year.
He was very good tonight, in all zones.
Stuuuuuuuu
… and a Nuuuuuuuuge!!
Stuuuuuuuuge!
Huuuuuuuuuuuge!
Ooooh, Skinner got that puck behind the net with bit of time and space – with a 2-goal lead, well, Mike Smith wouldn’t have hesitated, that’s for sure.
The Condors PP may be the most ineffective thing in North American professional hockey!
I know the Avs have injury issues, but they are a very top heavy team.
That top is sure fun to watch though. The mobility and puck control is off the chsrts
Yep. The top line and Makar are sublime.
They do.
So do the Oilers: Kane, Hyman, Arvidsson – that’s some legit impact players out of the lineup.
That’s potentially 80-90 goals not in our lineup. Banana how much better our depth is and nobody talks about it…where will they play when they all come back, eh?
Remember when the Canucks gave Podkolzin away for nothing (and signed to $1MM X 2) because they didn’t have room for him and chose to keep the likes of Nils Aman on the opening roster?
Great PK work by Podz there.
Podz at 1 million >>> Holloway at 2.25
That was an epic dive. Even the homer Avs commentators were baffled.
Great block Emberson and great stick Ek for the clear.
Didn’t catch him, Louie. He hit himself and went down like the sniper hit him…
Ugh, unnecessary/careless penalties…..
By an important PK guy.
Podz with a bad back pass in the o-zone for a turnover.
McDavid tries to dangle at the opposition blue line and the puck goes back the other way.
Nothing close to bad came from these plays but with under 10 to go in the 3rd with a 2-goal lead, smarter plays might be warranted.
lol Makar is so scary with the puck.
Wouldn’t have minded Bouch winding up with the big clapper there….
Wow. Great third period. McD is flying.
I am liking Kap.
Could Podz have a Nikushkin-lite career trajectory?
Love the Viking – take no …
The high wrister from the point with traffic has become a higher percentage chance over the past few years Imo. If it’s lower half these G with their 2×12 pads just take everything low away.
Sometimes forget how strong Ekholm is. Flattened that guy with ease.
Drai definitely wasn’t held there….
BOOM!!! Kulak through traffic!!! Been waiting for us to go to the net all year!!!
Hell of a play by Jeff Skinner there to get that puck to a teammate with time and space.
I would like to hold the lead for the entire period.
Preference to extend it but, at the very least, hold through the end.
So nice that Darnell Nurse is good at hockey again!
He’s not as noticeable in a good way lately. D partners are so critical
So are forwards that back track through the middle of the ice and that has been much better tonight
Probably the Oilers best dman since returning.
Very happy for Podz as he seems to have gotten the gorilla off his back! Need to get Hyman back and get him going as well. To my eye Nuge has looked much better tonight.
Dunno what was ailing Nuge but he’s over it now. The rumours of his demise were greatly exaggerated, it seems…
Highest pace game since Carolina
That Utah team the Oilers beat last night are up 6-0 on Vegas…..
Samsonov has been a fish out of water
Omg. The sniper musta got him!!!
Well, yes, that was a punch to the face, even if inadvertent.
That should be a G int. Made little attenpt to avoid contact with skinner
Great Nuge Backcheck!!! Again!!!
Great backcheck by Nuge…..
That penalty brought to you by the hard work of Podz…
Nice kill!!! Thought it was a weak call on Perry.
Great kill!
Janitor needs to cinch up that chin strap
Nurse, so good.
