Last night in Winnipeg, the Stan Bowman Oilers had a night. Edmonton’s tenth GM acquired Ike Howard, Atro Leppänen and Quinn Hutson over the summer and all three had a game. The most impressive player on the ice overall was Noah Philp, who made passes like Adam Oates used to back in the olden days. I have to say, my expectations of “Oilers at Jets” has been very low for several years, but last night was encouraging. Here’s a look.
Howard-Nuge-Kapanen played more than any other line at five-on-five, they were 6-7 shots, 0-1 goals and 32 percent expected goals. Nuge had a HDSC in the metric and of course sent that sweet pass to Ike Howard for his first goal as an Oilers player. I’m pleased the coach has Nuge with Howard, but wonder if Kapanen is the right third man. He’s aggressive on the forecheck and creates chances, but there’s also chaos and time spent inefficiently. Not sure where Kapanen fits, don’t think it’s wise that he’s on a line with a rookie.
Henrique-Savoie was a thing with a couple of left-wingers (Viljami Marjala and Rem Pitlick) rotating through. Henrique-Savoie went 2-5 shots in 10:10 and didn’t get much done. Savoie played just 12:07 at five-on-five, maybe they’re saving him for tonight? Don’t know. Even with limited time, Savoie showed he’s quality. I don’t think Henrique is a dynamic center offensively, but if this is the third line the trio should get plenty of opportunities against the soft parade.
Noah Philp had two assists, was money in the faceoff circle and made plays you’d see from a veteran. His two passes were sublime examples of creative hockey and impressive execution. I don’t think he clears waivers. As we get older, we notice patterns, and Philp’s game last night reminded me of Kyle Brodziak’s impact evening in September of 2007. I wrote about it years ago, and here is the passage that could apply to Philp:
On the night of Sept. 17, 2007, prospect Kyle Brodziak announced he was NHL-ready and blew away the competition. He scored twice, added an assist, played over 16 minutes, and over two minutes on both the power play and penalty kill. A team that badly needed responsible two-way forwards with some offence, Brodziak made the team and never spent another minute in the minors. He retired after 917 games in the NHL, his final season coming with the Oilers in 2018-19.
Atro Leppänen looks good to me. I’m not going to get all wrapped up in this because there’s no damn room, but I think Bowman might have found something here. Leppänen spiked late, and we had to assume he had all kinds of problems defensively, but he appears to be a good thinker as well as a fine passer and offensive asset. I am starting to wonder if Bowman might have to make room for this player at some point this season. Just a mild case of curiosity, no excitement at all. Very calm.
Quinn Hutson continues to do things that make him stand out in a good way. I have no idea if he’ll ever see the NHL, but he does so many things well. His puck handling and passing are strong, and he went to the net and made a dynamite tip for his goal last night. I’m putting him in the same drawer as Leppänen, although I don’t think Bowman will have to make room for Hutson this season. Maybe next fall, though. He’s going to have a pro career somewhere in the hockey world.
On the Lowdown today, our feature guest will be Kevin McCurdy. I’ll ask him about the coaching decision to put Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl on the top line, and we’ll discuss last night’s game before looking forward to this evening’s home tilt against the Kraken. Noon to 2pm on Sports 1440 and You Tube.

Tomasek looks slow, like not much faster than Corey Perry. Hope he can adjust to the surface, he has skill.
No harm in Lepanen playing in the AHL and getting used to the north American game but I’m anxious to see him in a real NHL game to see if he’s for real or a pre season star. Seems like a real high ceiling player. His defense doesn’t seem worse than Klingburg at this point. Such a fun player.
Clatterburg looked more composed than in his last game.
For a guy who didn’t play last year Regula is moving well… I’d like to see him in a few more games but waivers might be a real risk, he’s got all the tools.
A lot of guys seemed invisible, including Frederic.
Didn’t catch the game, but listened to all the pre game and KK’s comments.
Opened the stat sheet and a few big ol’ ugly -3s jumped out… wait that’s Freddy and…. no way and…. noooo way!
Mercy, if this isn’t a preseason story.
Makes me laugh.
Typical Oilers.
With the understanding that the competition has been early preseason calibre, through three games I have yet to see anything concerning about Leppanen’s defensive game.
Loaded up top line with top paring with two goals against on in-zone plays stemming from lost battles.
And Frederic has been almost invisible on that line.
I was thinking the same thing. He doesn’t seem to have any urgency out there. He should be the forechecker on that line, and he seems to be hanging back. I hope it’s just preseason rust or preseason effort. You’d think he’d be pumped up to show he belongs on that line. Chance of a lifetime.
No, it’s just a wednesday. It might be a chance of a lifetime if he was on a one or two year deal as he should be.
Leppanen/Regula are going to terrorize the AHL with their puck-moving. Regula looks like Bouchard style wise with his passing and Leppanen is more like a Hutson/Parekh style wise.
I’ll believe Regula clears waivers when I see it.
Eat bread! Mangiapane scores as Bouchard swoops around the net, feeds Mangiapane in front and converts his own rebound to halve the deficit.
Seems like the Oilers don’t like winning puck battles.
For anyone wondering, the Seattle player Šalé is Czech, and not Swiss.
So . . . . no cheeze?
Sure. Czech-y Cheese!
Very nice stretch pass from Regula – from the defensive corner to the offensive front side blue line to send in Janmark for a break.
Really liked Akey’s first period. He did take a slashing penalty but as Stauff said it was full value at least – he made it count. He’s playing with confidence with the puck rather than treating it as a hot potato.
Listening on 880. Only 5 shots after 16 minutes? Snoozer.
“Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Fisker Molgaard,
That is what I’d truly like to be-ee-ee.
‘Cause if I were an Oscar Fisker Molgaard,
Everyone would be in love with me.”
Hahahahaha. Love it.
McDavid and Drai out with 25 seconds left in the first period PK.
Ekholm looking “rusty” on his first shift – wow.
Congrats on your wedding LT, so happy for you!
Also, website looks fixed. All nice and clean. Awesome.
Yeah, Blue host came in and cleaned it very well.
NHLe for notable forward prospects and Leppanen according to the numbers I found.
Tomasek 25g, 59pts
Hutson 19g, 42pts
Beryozkin 15g, 42pts
Leppanen 13g, 39pts
Howard 19g, 38pts
Jarventie (23-24) 16g, 36pts
Marjala 5g, 36pts
Savoie 11g, 32pts
Maybe we shouldn’t be so surprised that Hutson is looking great out there. He outscored Howard in NCAA equivalency last season. Great pickup.
What was the source for these NHLe figures?
I’d be skeptical about Hutson projecting higher than both Savoie and Hutson, but maybe that’s just me. Given Jarventie hasn’t played in a metric forever, I think there’s some sustain for a critical eye toward those figures.
Hutson is two years older than Howard. Scored two points less in the NCAA last year than Howard, in one more game. Not sure how you’re arriving at that statement with equivalency.
Different divisions within the NCAA have different equivalencies. Hutson played in a more difficult division. I think I got these from the Dobber site. Jarventie’s numbers (as noted) are from 2 years ago.
If a player got 1 pt / gp, this would be their NHLe for the following NCAA Divisions according to Dobber Sports wesbite:
WCHA – 36 pts (.44e)
NCHC – 36 pts (.44e)
Hockey-East – 32 pts (.39e)
Big-10 – 27 pts (.33e)
ECAC – 23 pts (.28e)
That’s a pretty big difference from playing in one of the top 2 divisions and ECAC.
Oh yeah, they are 2 years apart. For some reason, I thought there was only 1 year between them. Howard should have a bit more room to grow, but being not far from last season, Hutson is still comparable and, at least to me, has looked like the better player so far in pre-season.
Atro Leppanen’s career trajectory is very similar to Brian Rafalski’s. They both had a great final year in Liiga with both winning multiple awards (All-Star, Best D, Golden Helmet, Most Assist by D, Most Points by D, Player of the Month award), while Atro also led the entire league in points and won the league MVP award. Atro also broke the record for most points by a D. Leppanen was 9 months older than Rafalski, but that’s pretty close when you’re 25. They both started the season at 25 years old.
Leppanen has a slight height advantage 6′-0″ to 5’10”. Rafalski played in the NHL between 191 lbs and 194 lbs while Leppanen is currently listed at 184 lbs. They’re both good, agile skaters.
They play a different style, but if Leppanen can improve his defensive game and competition level, he might surprise everyone. A lot of ifs. His NHLe from last season works out to 13g, 26a, 39 points. Every team in the NHL could use that kind of scoring from the back end. I’m excited to see more from him.
I had not realized that he shattered the Liiga record for points by a D-man. Or that he lead the entire league in points. Can he defend? Usually I’m skeptical about older Euro FA signings, but this one might just be a gem.
Maybe another Reijo Ruotsalainen? (Rafalski would be a dream.)
Even if he’s a Gostisbehere/DeAngelo type, those guys have value. And the signing didn’t cost us anything.
Some terrible news – from the Oilers:
What a gut punch.
🙏
Bob hinting HEAVY about using draft picks to acquire Mason Marchment and extending him. I have time for the player, but Seattle got him for a 3rd and a 4th… a 1st would be too much, no?
Why wouldn’t the Oilers want him? He has done well in the regular season but has been a non-factor in 3 consecutive playoffs for Dallas.
McDavid wants to see action from the team right f’n now. I suspect we’ll see Ken Holland-like trading of future assets for young guys.
Teams already plotting how to circumvent the new playoff salary cap rules.
One possibility mentioned is teams that are carrying two pricy goaltenders could sit their normal backup and put a cheap 3rd stringer on the roster.
The example used was Vancouver who could scratch Lankinen and use most of his $4.5 million to add another player.
What about scratching the so called Starter on paper. The Oilers are always ahead of the curve as our back-up is grossly underpaid for the responsibility placed on him.
ThecOikers are paying their goaltenders so little it wouldn’t make much difference.
This comes from an article at The Athletic, in case anyone wants to know.
Also, this is NOT new – I even mentioned not dressing Skinner in a playoff game if they in a situation where they start Pickard – months ago. I also mentioned that, if they used accrued space to acquire a significant player, a guy like Henrique may need to be sat, depending on how everyone is playing.
Next, this is not circumvention, its the ridiculous lineup structuring the league is forcing given their terrible decision to change how the cap hit of a player is determined in the regular season vs. playoffs.
Circumvention is the act of avoiding or cleverness or finding a loophole.
It involves a deliberate effort to go around a system, regulation, or barrier, often to avoid negative consequences
Sure, and that is not what is being suggested.
The NHL has implemented a “dressed roster cap” and benching a higher paid goalie or player is what they are “forcing” in certain circumstances to be in compliance.
Agree, Henrique is no longer dynamic offensively. One could argue his skating and defensive abilities are no longer dynamic either. Of all the third line centers currently listed on daily faceoff, how many does Henrique win the head to head matchup against?
Team 3rd line center:
ANA R. Strome
BOS Zacha
BUF McLeod
CAL Frost
CAR Stall
CHI Dickinson
COL Drury
CLB Coyle
DAL Duchene
DET Copp
FLA Lundell
LAK Danault
MIN Yurov
MON Newhook
NAS Haula
NJD Glass
NYI Pageau
NYR Parssinen
OTT Pinto
PHI Cates
PIT Novak
SJS Wennberg
SEA Stephenson
STL Suter
TBY Gourde
TOR Roy
UTA McBain
VAN Blueger
VEG Hertl
WAS McMichael
WIN Namestnikov
Not many! Unfortunately I think Henrique “IS” the soft parade if slotted at 3rd line center. Likely why KK has said, and so far played, RNH at center. Believe Henrique will either play 4th line center or on one of the wings.
I have not heard much feedback on the goaltenders, but via the radio it sounded like Thompson was making big saves?
he made a few big ones in the third, and didn’t have much chance on the goal against. Picks had a great glove save in the first
I was really impressed with that Marjala kid. Great offensive instincts as well as defensive awareness. I think we have a future player here.
I’m not a “more bigger” guy at all but he got thumped around pretty good last night to my eye.
Definitely some real talent and motor there – he’s got a chance but he’ll need to gain some mass I think – will be interesting to see how he lasts through an AHL season.
While McDavid may do what is “best for McDavid” there is no way he screws over the Oilers or his teammates. He will not just walk and be lost for nothing.
He knows the game, he knows the value of a #1 center and the impact of losing that piece of the roster for nothing. He knows the effect on his teammates. He will do everything possible to hurt the team as little as possible.
Whatever happens, I absolutely believe there will be a gentleman’s agreement in place where the Oilers will be able to recover asset value.
With this in mind, one can have much more peaceful thoughts.
Yeah. I guess, I mean…
I hope that manifests.
Maybe. Time will tell
If McDavid’s priority is contention, why would he want to weaken team he is going to? I’d have Edmonton recoup nothing or something akin to Marner’s return.
Sure if we wants to start his villian arc. If he wants to leave on good terms with the fan base, he makes sure there is some return.
Good point. I have no answer. But I just can’t see that attitude happening. At each step, even when 18 years old he has been a solid, respectful player who does care. I am 90% he stays anyway. Short deal not due to uncertainty but due to saving cap space so they can get better. 🙂And win.
His value was highest before July 1, it decreases with each passing day. If he decides or has already decided to move on from Edmonton, we will never get near good enough value in any trade between now and July 1 2026.
What is magical about this past July 1? Other teams cap room before this seasons free agency splurge or something else? And can you explain the mechanics of any trade scenario that could have occurred on or before that date?
Well, to be brutally honest…
If a guy is leaving a team…and knows he’s leaving already but can’t break it to people yet…
Why would that guy let the team he’s leaving, “stock up” off of the trade for him to make the team he’s leaving better? (Hope that made sense haha)
And if this said guy is honest about winning being the only “hold-up” right now…then letting a rival team stock up off of your talent, while your walking out the door, would not be a wise decision for him personally.
It would be wise for him to leave them with nothing and crush their contender status instantly.
That hurt me to write 🙁
Still hoping for the jersey contract.
Stu playing full 60 tonight.
Coach is looking for Mangiapane to play with Nuge for a bit here – planned on him playing with Nuge in Winnipeng last night but he was sick.
Coach again talking about not giving the young players big roles – they won’t start up the lineup but may earn it.
Asked about Savoie and points and coach said he doesn’t care about points but wants to see him win puck battles and make plays under pressure.

Team Canada and Team USA will play two Rivalry Series games in Edmonton as part of the lead-up to the 2026 Olympics.
Both games will be held at Rogers Place (home of the Oilers) on December 10 and 13.
Are the teams chosen by then?
I would assume so.
After announcing the first 6 players, they said the remainder would be announced “later this year”.
Are those not the women’s teams?
Yes, this is the women’s rivalry games (which they have every year).
This is right in the middle of the NHL season – its not the men.
————————–
Nope, not saving him (Hutson and Leppanen going back to back).
More verbal yesterday from the coach re: Savoie could play 4th line – better to work his way up the lineup than get tried up the lineup and not be ready.
Savoie has the ability to play up and down the lineup but, at least for me, that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be given opportunity up the lineup to start.
He is primarily an offensive player but, at the same time, he’s a complimentary offensive player not a driver of offence. Savoie is best suited to play his top game with other smart and skilled offensive players.
Who am I to question to coach but I don’t his early season management of Savoie – he’s made his decision on where he start and not even providing a semblance of real opportunity.
Maybe they feel Savoie needs more time in the minors marinating his game offensively. I myself don’t believe this but some sceptics say would it really hurt Savoie getting 1st line PP-PK in Bakersfield. Maybe even at the Centre position as Bowman may need a plan B if Connor is taking his talents elsewhere.
What is pre-season if not to see what young players can do when given an opportunity.
But alas, it seems the Oilers are determined to beat any offence out of players until they have a team of checkers.
Mcleod was sent down early, blew the doors off, was brought up and that was that. 50 points centre in the NHL now. Getting sent down early isn’t the death sentence some make it seem.
Leo sorta did it many years ago though out of junior.
The cream rises, showing management he doesn’t belong there ever again will not hurt development imo.
Bowie struggles with this love thing “Walks beside me/walks on by”.
So happy you are good with it, LT. Best vibes from your Arizona fan base.

That snipe by Howard was a thing of beauty. When’s the last time a Oiler forward had a one-timer like that? I think Lavoie had a couple of snipes like that but that was in the AHL if I remember correctly.
Other than Drai
Yes besides Leon I would probably say Eberle yet I think Howard is going to get better and better every practice he has Leon-Connor feeding him the biscuit. I myself would squeeze every goal possible out of Howard who’s on Value Village wages for the next 3 years and then possibly flip him as his wages and value will skyrocket with every goal he scores. If Howard can score on NHL Goalies then put him in a position to do this immediately.
I don’t know if Eberle ever scored a true one-timer in his life. The guy could snipe top shelf for sure, but he was the king of dusting the puck off.
EDM lineup vs. SEA:
Draisaitl – McDavid – Frederic
Janmark – Lazar – Hutson
Mangiapane – Tomasek – Jarventie
Hamblin – Samanski – Clattenburg
Ekholm – Bouchard
Lappanen – Regula
Millman – Akey
Skinner
Jonsson
Maybe testing Hutson’s “pro-readiness” a bit here given he played is the one guy that played in Winnipeg last night that will play 2/5 of the way across the country tonight (plus both rookie games and the split squad game).
Wait Leppanen too – two guys new to North American pro hockey that are unlikely to make the team but could impact the lineup during the season.
Looking forward to seeing all three on that third line and the 2nd pairing
It will be interesting to see how the new guys work out. I’m heading to Alberta tomorrow, which radio carries the games these days? For once I’ll likely be in range to pick it up in the car
Oops I see the game is tonight. So maybe I can get bits of Friday/Sunday games.
880 has the Oilers games with Stauffer and Moon.
Thanks
Drai – McDavid – Frederic
This line will have a low give-a-darn factor as they go take a scrimmage.
As much as I would like to see some kids play with some talent, perhaps tonight is not the best night
If McDavid isn’t signing, force a trade.
Neither of the two rookies should be saddled with Henrique in any way.
Draisaitl is a center and may be the teams only true top line center this time next year, saddle McDavid with Henrique if he won’t accept a trade.
Mangiapane/McDavid/Frederick
Podkolzin/Draisaitl/Savoie
Howard/Nuge/Tomasek
Lazar/Philp/Kapanen
Draisaitl is not a winger, get your head out of your arse coach.
McDavid’s contract has a No Movement Clause. How would you suggest a trade be forced? How would this approach impact trade value? How would this outcome reflect on the franchise, particularly with respect to attracting free agents?
There’s all kinds of ways of doing this from friendly to nasty. Oilers will always spend to the Cap, money will always attract and having a good team with the likes of Leon and Bouchard won’t hurt either. McDavid is one hell of a player but let’s not put him ahead of the Oiler Jersey . Toronto actually thought Marner would resign as for Bowman I think him and his father have been around long enough to not fall for that one unless McDavid has a change of heart and signs by game 1.
Please list the ways of forcing a McDavid trade, from friendly to nasty. Please bear in mind the team has granted the player a No Movement Clause, so he holds all the negotiating leverage. Please tell me how you might approach this.
It’s as simple as McDavid giving Bowman a trade list of where he would prefer to go all the way to the other end of the spectrum. If word leaks out that McDavid is moving on yet won’t wave his no trade use your imagination. How is Tkachuk viewed in Calgary compared to Marner in Toronto? Both players wanted to leave 1 team was compensated the other was bent over and given the shaft.
I imagine McDavid does not need to submit a trade list to anyone; that’s why he negotiated a NMC-so he does not have to. Using your imagination, how does one prompt him to do so? What are the knock-on effects for the team? The locker room?
The only choice they have is not play him and that would be a very bold choice that probably means you don’t work again.
But I’m guessing Mcdavid would be livid if he was told he’s not playing this year and would accept a trade

The suggestion is to take steps to not allow an employee to perform his job as a tactic to get him to (a) sign a new contract as to not go to a competitor after his current contract is done or (b) waive a contractual clause negotiated in good faith?
Not only would the NHLPA be as up in arms as they’ve ever been, this could to lead to formal legal action against the organization.
Nastiest (and M.A.D), but:
Sit McD the whole season until he consents to a trade.
That option is nuclear, and not a good look, and by gum nothing I would endorse, but it is technically an option.
Nuge said he prefers C, and likes wingers that shoot. That third line looks right. The only concern might be that neither Tomasek or Nuge at this point are that fast
Right now everything is about making McDavid happy in Edmonton. Playing him with Drai will help with that.
ha!
Just a mild case of curiosity, no excitement at all. Very calm.
Same. Lepanen, Hutson 🤪
Nice to see Philp finally looking like a true NHLer. We still haven’t seen Lazar yet but keeping him as the 13th forward, seeing as he can play all three forward positions, could prove valuable. We may also see Henrique & Tomasek battling for the 3c position initially to start the season. I’m beginning to see a trio of Oiler veteran forwards as low hanging fruit (Henrique, Janmark & Kapanen) all three could be cap casualties.
Noah Philp has put Curtis Lazar on notice – as it should be.
Quinn Hutson is putting Roby Jarventie and James Hamblin and Max Jones on notice for first forward call-up.
Hutson seems to have the brain needed to overcome skill limitations. If he can be a depth player for the Oil (or be a guy they can flip for need this spring) then he is found money. I have to admit I am very pleased with his acquisition.
So glad that Philp is having the kind of camp that can keep him on the team. I am cheering hard for his success.
I think Hutson is probably a tweener. Curlock says his skating isn’t special, and that makes an NHL career very hard to see for a smaller lighter guy. He has the smarts and enough skill, but hundreds of guys do. Hamblin is in the same boat even if a better skater
If Jarventie can stay healthy he’ll be passing guys up the list, a lot of that coming from your scouting reports on him
I think his speed looks good out there and the scouting reports I’ve read on Hutson describe him as: “Hutson is an above-average, fast skater with excellent edges, allowing him to quickly get past defenders.”
Howard asked if he feels comfortable from the spot he scored his PPG and his responds “ya, I love bombing pucks from there!”
Tough not to like this kid. He exudes energy – seems to love playing hockey and being at the rink.
It would be great to add a guy that bombs them from the left side
Draisaitl-McDavid-Frederic
Howard-Nuge-Mangiapane
Podkolzin-Tomasek-Savoie
Henrique-Philp-Lazar
If Knoblauch is stuck on that first line, this looks like a reasonably balanced roster on paper to start the season with.
