2021-22 Game 28: Blue Jackets at Oilers

by Lowetide

The Edmonton Oilers requested the California Golden Seals, but the league is sending the Columbus Blue Jackets instead. The home side has a good record against CBJ, but these teams aren’t far from each other in the overall standings and this game could be loss No. 7 without being a shocker.

For Edmonton, scoring the first goal, staying out of the box, recognizing danger, crisp passing and stellar goaltending would all be useful tonight. Sometimes I have a feel for a game’s result morning of, but the spidey senses aren’t tingling today.

Are you ready?

THE ATHLETIC!

WHAT TO EXPECT IN DECEMBER

  • At home to: PIT (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 1-0-0)
  • On the road to: SEA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-1-0)
  • At home to: LAK, MIN, BOS, CAR, TOR, CBJ (Expected 3-3-0) (Actual 0-5-0)
  • On the road to: SEA (Expected 0-1-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • At home to: ANA (Expected 1-0-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • On the road to: LAK, SJS, CAL, STL, NJD (Expected 3-2-0) (Actual 0-0-0)
  • Overall expected result: 8-7-0, 16 points in 15 games
  • Actual December results: 1-6-0, 2 points in 7 games
  • Oilers in 2021-22: 16-11-0, 32 points in 27 games

It’s like reading half a book. This month is a tragedy at this point, and could continue on that road. A second act filled with losses would mean the ruination of a fine start to the season and a complete derailment of the Holland tunnel. Last summer was the year he had money, there’s not enough wiggle room in the coming summer to set things right.

Or, the month could plod along at .500 for the rest of the month, giving the Oilers a 4-4-0 finish and a record of 20-15-0. It would make for a boring set of middle chapters but set up a hopeful ending.

Or, and hold on to your ass, this team could rise up like a sleeping giant, and pillage the local townships leaving nothing but the bones. A 7-1-0 finish would leave Edmonton with a 23-12-0 record and a fan base equal parts fury and ecstasy.

I’d bet on one of the earlier options all day, save for the twin peaks that are 29 and 97. Those two men won’t be struggling forever.

ILYA KONOVALOV

You never know with goalies, and hold on to your horses, but the young Russian is adjusting to the AHL. Here are his save percentage splits by month:

  • October: two games, .857
  • November: four games, .873
  • December: three games, .941

He may never make the NHL, but Hockey Prospecting loves him, and those numbers in December are eye popping. Something to keep in mind.

OILERS FIVE-ON-FIVE SCORING (FORWARDS)

It would be nice to see secondary scoring, but that isn’t likely. I have some hope Warren Foegele and Ryan McLeod can post some scoring numbers, but the top two lines are going to do the heavy lifting and that’s not going to change.

Leon Draisaitl’s first nine games were all-world, and his second nine game segment was also impressive. Chances are he’ll recover in the next nine games offensively (this is all five-on-five).

Connor McDavid has been consistent over the season offensively, and his main wingers (Jesse Puljujarvi and Zach Hyman) have been fairly consistent.

Draisaitl’s linemates are having a miserable season, and at this point I think Nuge at center might be a good idea. His offense, even on a feature line, isn’t miles past Ryan McLeod’s offense. Perhaps, when Hyman is healthy, Edmonton should consider running Foegele-McDavid-Puljujarvi, Hyman-Driasiatl-Kassian, Benson-Nuge-Yamamoto, McLeod-Ryan-Sceviour. Thoughts?

OILERS FIVE ON FIVE GOAL DIFFERENTIAL

The beginning of the year was mostly positive, Nurse was a little shy of 50 percent goal differential but everyone else was riding the wave. In the second set of games, Nuge was the only regular above 50 percent, so 18 games into the year everyone was within a couple of goals of level.

The final nine games have been cray cray and we don’t know if the Wile E. Coyote free fall is at the conclusion or there are several frames to go. I’d like to see everyone healthy and at that point get a good look at the group. We don’t know that Markus Niemelainen can help win games on the third pair, but it might be time to try.

Looks like TSN will be showing CHL games starting next month:

Games of interest for Oilers prospects (barring any trades at pro/junior level):

Friday, January 21, 6 p.m. – Regina @ Brandon. Could Jake Chiasson finally return from injury before then? As a wise man once said, we wait. Also, some kid named Bedard plays for Regina. Hear he’s good.

Friday, February 25, 5 p.m. – Oshawa @ Kingston. Tullio’s Generals vs. Shane Wright’s Frontenacs.

Friday, March 11, 5 p.m. – Shawinigan @ Victoriaville. Even after missing time in the Q for the WJHC, could The Bourg crack the century mark in points? Could he even do it before this game?

All times are Morinville time.

OriginalPouzar

Also, William Lagesson, have yourself another solid night and looking somewhat dangerous offensively. 9-0 scoring chances (3-0 high danger scoring chances).

Genjutsu

Gotta keep him in the lineup, no?

jp

William Lagesson, have yourself another solid night

Agreed on Lags.

Guess that means Barrie had a strong game too. *checks* Yup.

Whether it’s Lags or Niemalainen or whoever, finding a partner that clicks with Barrie would be huge.

Reja

Nice to see the Coach put out the dregs with the open net. Tippett would of had Connor and Leon out there. That empty netter is going to kick start Foegele he’s going to go on a mini streak before Christmas. Remember you heard it here first also bench Yamo and free one of the few real shooters we have who goes by the name of Perlini.

OriginalPouzar

The coach had the 1st line out there…….

Admiral Ackbar

The dregs quickly changed once the G was pulled. The first line got the EN..

Perlini looked hungry/desperate tonight. And he had some success. Another look in the top 6 could be in order if he can put together some more good games.

Admiral Ackbar

I wonder how this game would have turned out if Voracek doesn’t make that bon-headed helmetless play. That 5on3 was a gift. Boy did they need a break. Finally.

OriginalPouzar

Similar to how we can wonder how the previous game would have turned out had Drai not missed the wide-open net when the game was scoreless…

Admiral Ackbar

You’ve been a real poopy pants with me lately. I’m celebrating the win and still the dig.

Don’t forget Lumbus’ two posts. Skinner played very well and even had some luck. A lot of things had to go right for this win. I’ll take it, but this wasn’t a 180 to previous games. It was the same team that got breaks.

OriginalPouzar

I’m not sure if you were watching but the last two previous games, in particular the last one against the Leafs, one could argue the Oilers were the better team and the tenders stole those games.

Harpers Hair

I’m not sure if you were watching (okay I’m sure you were) but the Oilers should have lost to the Penguins before the losing streak started.

The Admiral is right, the fortuitous helmet pop set the tone for the whole game when it resulted in a two man advantage.

The Oilers played well but they also had a lot of puck luck.

OriginalPouzar

The Oilers played well against the Leafs and the Leafs had all the puck luck.

Oilers had some puck luck tonight but were also by far the better team.

Oilers could easily have won the two games before this one with a little luck.

Harpers Hair

Shit happens…to every team.

The Leafs OWN the Oilers luck or not.

Admiral Ackbar

Relying on luck is not the way to win playoff series. I want to be positive too, and they have controlled the play for vast stretches but they still look their current record. Especially of late.

Genjutsu

Hockey is what it it is.

Luck driven.

Admiral Ackbar

Yet good teams seem to win far more than they lose. Are they luckier than bad teams? Or can we admit that there’s a non-luck component to winning…?

LMHF#1

If this appears true – you’re doin it wrong.

jp

Come on AA and LMHF, ‘luck driven’ doesn’t mean good teams don’t win more than they lose or visa versa. See Edmonton Oilers: 17W 11L.

It means they don’t win every game they should win, or lose every game they should lose.

OriginalPouzar

The Zack Kassian we saw tonight helps this team win hockey games. I saw him make one poor decision play deep in the opposition zone (a bad pass back to the point that was a turnover while he was trapped deep) but, other than that, he made good and responsible plays all over the ice and a few plus plays in the defensive zone and even a few battles.

Plus 2 at evens in the bottom 6.

I haven’t seen him play a game like that since early 2020, maybe later 2019.

He’s had a few “more prominent” offensive games but always with 2-way blunders/effort issues – not tonight.

Is it possible he gives a few more of these and they become “the norm”? A long ways from there I guess.

Victoria Oil

Trade him now while he’s on a mini hot streak. 😀

Admiral Ackbar

He looks like he actually cared tonight. I’m not sure what this means about his level of compete on ‘off nights’. I always saw him as thinking the game slower since the concussions but this could be simply a lack of effort. He still very much telegraphs most plays.

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

RNH and Yamo are in a real funk. They are both invisible 5v5.

When Hyman is back I would like to see:

Foegele McD Bison boi
Benson Drai Hyman
Perlini RNH Yamo
Plug Plug Plug

Give RNH and Yamo reduced minutes/competition and see if they can work things out.

Admiral Ackbar

Ha! Yep. That’s the classic 4th line the past few years…

flyfish1168

La Bamba

Munny 2.0

It’s over. Thank you.

delooper

Foegele 100 yard stare.

flyfish1168

Bison King is the 1st Star of the game

KnightRain

Pull the goalie. Send out Benson’s line. I’m not the praying type but..,

jp

Great to salt that away.

OriginalPouzar

Great pass by Jesse there…. on his second attempt to clear.

Munny 2.0

Two pretty good shifts back-to-back from the Jackets, Skins gives up a juicy rebound and the puck is in the net.

N64

That’s why they call me “Two Basket Skinner.”

Reja

Nice dump in Yamo you cost your team a goal.

Todd Macallan

Absolutely. He needs time on the 3rd line, hope Hyman is ready soon to take his place.

Munny 2.0

That was their worst shift of the game. They had hardly seen their own end

OriginalPouzar

The second line’s Corsi ranges from 23% (Nuge) to 43% (Drai) tonight……. Yamamoto in the 30s.

Are you sure.

Munny 2.0

Could be, I’ve been imbibing. I can recall some dominant shifts though.

Too bad we don’t have actual time. One of these days the networks will catch up to the third millenium, I suppose. How long have they had possession time on the telly for footer? Seems like two decades.

jp

I thought they had a lot of zone time too. Recall that group does NOT game for corsi. My eyes could also deceive though.

OriginalPouzar

Literally, the first time I’m notice Yamamoto for over a period as he carries the puck through the neutral zone…… he turns it over at the blueline and 15 seconds later its in the Oilers net.

Not good Kailer…

Jaxon

Yup, that was an easy play he didn’t make, especially when we was feeling pressure from behind.

Last edited 3 years ago by Jaxon
Admiral Ackbar

That one was cringe-worthy. He looks like a deer in the headlights lately when he’s got the puck. It’s crazy because not long ago he looked like he knew exactly what to do to manage the puck. Is that the difference between confidence and no confidence? Injury? Shot down too many times at the bar?

KnightRain

Goalie jumped before the pass. lol Everybody in the new universe knew that pass was coming! I woulda done the same. If I was that fast and skilled…

Munny 2.0

13 is probably going to be seeing all 8 of his misses when he’s lying on his pillow later tonight, but he’s going to be seeing that one the most.

Munny 2.0

Oh my god.

Munny 2.0

29 practicing his flop shot

Munny 2.0

That looks more like the Kassian we know and “love”

KnightRain

Shooting mentality. It’s gonna hurt tomorrow…

Munny 2.0

I think that was #10 from Debrusk… everyone drinks double.

Last edited 3 years ago by Munny 2.0
jp

I wonder what the zone time has been. Seems like the Oilers have spent a LOT of time in the Jackets end.

Munny 2.0

deft steal by Nuge, a relay from Drai and Bouchard has a clean look

jtblack

Can we get this Perlini for the next 50 games 🙂

Munny 2.0

Whirlini

KnightRain

If Benson or Sceviour score I’m gonna be a Scotch man til we hoist the Cup…wife will not approve…lol

Admiral Ackbar

Don’t let her steal your joy.

Munny 2.0

That’s a pity. Was hoping for the no-no.

But… rebounds

flyfish1168

Leon doesn’t look right. I wonder if he has a nagging injury

OriginalPouzar

Standard December Leon.

OriginalPouzar

Not the best post-faceoff-loss effort by Drai….

KnightRain

Thanks, Lowetide…

Munny 2.0

I’d like to see Foggy for one more game up with 97, even if Hyman is ready.

Brogan Rafferty's Uncle Steve

Put Hyman on the Drai line. Bump Yamo down.

KnightRain

I approve this move.

fishman

Wish we had a little more “Benson mentality” in our line up….

KnightRain

Am liking Bensons sandpaper. Seems to effortlessly piss off ppl. If he can score a little he’s a keeper

Admiral Ackbar

He does kinda have a face you’d wanna punch.

jp

That was as nice a weight as you’ll see on a dump in there by Barrie.

Munny 2.0

Lot of weight being dumped tonight

jp

Ha, I was thinking curling, but I can’t argue there.

Munny 2.0

L2 has owned their matchup all night

Munny 2.0

I’ll take 17:24 more of that, please.

Munny 2.0

look at that little Laggy go!

jp

Yeah, Lags… Different

Munny 2.0

Tippett has a sniper positioned in the crowd ready to down the first Dman who pinches deep in the final stanza.

Prairie_Sentinel

No more d-man injuries please, we’ve seen that show and it ain’t pretty

Munny 2.0

Well said on the Sweet Potato by both Stauff and MacT

Lol and Gene agrees.

KnightRain

Might not make it to the end of the game if I keep hearing “shooter mentality” but what a way to go! lol Just need Benson’s line to score to have my prediction golden!
Scotch doesn’t lie. Gonna need to make another trip to Costco.

Todd Macallan

Yes I hear Kirkland sure makes a fine scotch.

KnightRain

No complaints tonight! Blended slump buster. No card required

Whaler Slamamoto

Who had to point out this shooters mentality thing in recent weeks? Some things are better unnoticed. It’s all I hear now….

Chief Inspector

The pain had to be shared

Munny 2.0

After a Benson and a Yamamoto goal, please and thanks.

KnightRain

Damn. You said the S word…smh

Oil2Oilers

With the Oilers coming out of their slump in front of Skinner rather than Smith we are saved some unbearable commentary.

Also buys Ilya some more starts in Bakersfield, where he is heating up.

Paulie

Skinner seems much more poised and better positioned than Miko most of the time.

Munny 2.0

Gerta, you watching this one?

LMHF#1

Skinner tracking the puck well. Seeing and reacting to the tips.

Material Elvis

Nice reaction save by Skinner.

KnightRain

Skinners rebounds need work but his positioning and reactions are wicked

KnightRain

How’s that for evidence? lol
