I know you’re going to ask and the answer is there’s no way to know. The NHL drafted over 30 Russians who played in Russia in the 2021 draft, but with the state of the world today that number could be halved or more. A team like Edmonton, with just four selections, is likely to be risk averse and the chances of a player from the KHL or any other Russian league landing with the Oilers seems a distant bell. As always, the talent is there.

Russia and the 2022 draft
I have 14 names this year, and in a normal draft the talent here would fetch seven or eight names in the top 60 overall. Not so this season, simply because it’s unclear if these young men will ever play in the NHL. The times they are a-changin’ and an NHL-KHL relationship does not exist at this time.
These are talented young players, if Yurov was available at No. 29 for Edmonton the club should take him. It might be a trap but the risk would be worth it. He’s a quality prospect. Each of these 14 names has enough talent to be drafted, and it’s anyone’s guess if their names are called this summer.

I did not rank defenseman Dmitry Kuzmin (No. 82, Winnipeg Jets), defenseman Dmitri Kostenko (No. 87, Montreal Canadiens), right wing Stiven Sardarian (No. 88, Buffalo Sabres) who were chosen in the first 125 (my list is 125 deep each year). I did rank Matvei Petrov, but it isn’t like I featured him. He did make my top 125 list at No. 70 overall. There are several players I ranked who didn’t get drafted and at least a dozen players drafted who I didn’t rank. That isn’t unusual in any way. Russia is the hard place, along with the USHL, in identifying the cream of the crop annually.
BUILDING THE TOP 125
- RC Shane Wright (O). Peter Harling (Dobber) compares to Patrice Bergeron.
- RC Matt Savoie (W). Scott Wheeler: Inside the offensive zone, he’s lethal.

- LW Adam Sykora (Slovak). Impressive skill, one of the youngest players in the draft.
- LW Luca DelBelBelluz (O). Size, two-way ability, and an offensive spike.
- RW Filip Masar (Slovak). Speed demon, undersized and dynamic.
- LD Lian Bichsel (Swe). Big, mobile defenseman with two-way skills.
The list is nearing completion, we don’t have many miles to go. I’ll have the Hinterlands next, followed by the goaltenders and then finally overagers. That overages list could have a big impact on the final 125, there’s a bunch.
OILERS MOCK
Now that we have the totals, it’s a good time to look at where the picks went and what Oilers fans might see at this year’s draft. It’s ain’t pretty.
- No. 29 overall: RW Jagger Firkus, Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL). I’m using Sam Cosentino’s excellent list because Mr. McKenzie hasn’t released his yet. I have Firkus No. 12, not sure he’d be an Oilers target this season but he is an excellent prospect.
- No. 61 overall: Belongs to the Montreal Canadiens as partial payment for Brett Kulak (William Lagesson).
- No. 93 overall: Belongs to the Chicago Blackhawks as partial payment for Duncan Keith (Caleb Jones)
- No. 125 overall: Belongs to New Jersey Devils in the Dmitry Kulikov trade
- No. 157 overall: LD Niks Fenenko, Baie Comeau Drakkar (QMJHL). Colleague Adam Sherren is doing great work in the QMJHL, crunching numbers and working on possession results. Sherren: “Fenenko is showing as a strong draft eligible prospect for BC. They are a dismal team and he seems to be a consistently strong performer.” He is an August 2004 and posted solid numbers (62, 6-34-40) but is not highly ranked.
- No. 189 overall: LD Måns Forsfjäll, Skelleftea (SHL). He’s 20 on July 30, 6.0 and 178, mobile and a good passer.
- No. 221 overall: LW Eric Alarie, Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL). I ranked him high last season (No. 24) and he looks rock solid as a prospect one year later. He’s 6.01, 196 and elusive. I hope he gets drafted this year, he’s a 2003.
UPDATED NHLE’S
I included playoffs for Holloway, mostly because I think his linemates skewed (downward) his scoring totals in the regular season. It’s important to know where these players will land next year in pro hockey, with Broberg and Holloway the most likely to stick in the NHL at some point next year.
The amateur scouting staff is doing fine work with (by my count) five significant forwards and one defenseman in the pipeline and pushing. The team will need value contracts (that’s my article at The Athletic today) which could force Broberg, Holloway, Niemelainen and Skinner on to the roster earlier than hoped next season.
Edmonton is probably going to attempt trading some veterans (Tyson Barrie) or buying them out (Zack Kassian) in hopes of increasing cap room. I do not believe all of the valuable RFA’s will return. I also believe Evander Kane will sign elsewhere but included him here because I suspect the organization will push hard to sign him. There will be roster casualties.
LOWETIDE AND JAMIESON
The response to the new show has been amazing, and thanks so much for giving us a spin. We’ll have our work cut out for us today, 10-2 on TSN1260, with coaches and management speaking at 9 and our reaction immediately following. It’ll be a great day. Bruce McCurdy from the Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal will join us at some point on what will be a fluid and jam packed show. 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter.
Thank you for the work you do
But there is no reason to take your ball and go home over somebody’s words
You’re better than that
A good nights rest will help dude. Appreciate you.
Just getting to this, haven’t read the original post yet, but am sorry to read this. You have been a great friend to this blog and instrumental in getting the old ship going in the right direction.
We feel your pain. Zen is your friend and he’s not worth one iota of your mental energy.
Have a good sleep. Tomorrow is a new day and you are respected and appreciated here.
Your contributions to the site are greatly appreciated – I hope most posters feel the same way
One of the best and an absolute gentleman.
So everyone knows a Puljujärvi trade is possible. And LT has floated Lawson Crouse as a possibility a couple times. Is he a player we want? I’ve only seen him play a couple of times, but he seems huge and had speed and some skill too. It doesn’t seem like the worst possible result to me. Even though I like Puljujärvi and have been rooting for it to work our the whole time. Anyone have any info on Crouse?
24 year old 6’4″ 220 LW who scored 20G and 34P this season.
He’s an RFA with arbitration rights with a qualifying offer of about$2.5 million.
Can’t imagine Arizona lets him go without a sweetheart trade.
Quit your tantrum. Everyone knows OP is eccentric but he’s not stupid. You’re ribbing the GM and he’s showing that there’s some hindsight bias being applied.
Cannot pay Kane anything near $7 Mil … and max 3 yrs.
30 Yr Old Power Forwards generally don’t age well ….
If the playoffs taught us anything, Edm doesnt need MORE GOALS.
Take the $$$ and spend it on a Good Goalie and Kulak and another shut down D type
Kane will actually be 31 before next season starts.
A main part of the reason that the Oilers “don’t need more goals” is because Kane was scoring at a goal per game pace.
If anything, the series with the Avs tought us that we need more meaningful offensive contributions from the bottom six. McLeod should help more next year than he did this year. Holloway perhaps as well.
Thing is, if we “lose a top 6”, well, that decreases the “bottom six punch”.
With that said, I do agree with your contract parameters.
Kane is not valuable only because of goals. The goals are replaceable. It is the complete package. Kane has scarce attributes in a legit top line power forward package. There is a high maintenance aspect to the package. If McDraivid and the coach are fine with the high maintenance aspects of the relationship, and price and duration are not too dear….
At least we dont have to argue about how Good Benson will be …..
Now its JP, Bouch etc.. 🤣
Summarizing!
The Cataractes are only a win away from the QMJHL title and a trip to the Memorial Cup in Saint John, following tonight’s 5-4 OT win. The Bourg played a big role in the victory, picking up 2+1 and named first star for his efforts.
Shawinigan can clinch tomorrow night on TSN 5 @ 5 p.m. Bluffton time.
I watched the game, he’s got the Steve Shutt in him. By that I mean he seems to be in optimal scoring position and the puck finds him. That’s not a shot, he knows where to find goals.
Is it me or did Bourgault grow some since last September? Looked big out there.
Seems quicker, too.
I really wanted them to draft Wallstedt … but I’ll readily admit the scouts did nice bit of projecting with The Bourg … he stock has gone up since the draft.
Hyman Draisaitl Bourgault in October.
Kane McDavid Puljujarvi/Yamamoto
Holloway, Nugent-Hopkins, Yamamoto/Puljujarvi
XXX, McLeod, Ryan
Thank you Tarkus for your fan-tastic reporting on the prospects. I love your passion for this and and and you have miraculously extended my oiler LT season.Further points for your Carvel reference. I was married in the Carvel hall. Fireworks and bonus cameo train rumbling by. The earth shook in so many ways. Thanks again for your work.
Fluky goal wins it for the Cataractes!!!!
Cataractes heading to OT
Their top PP unit is all RH shots. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before.
I think NASH rocked
ELLIS, FORSBERG, JOHANSEN, SCISSONS, TOMASINO a few yrs back …..
But super rare for sure!
Read an article about trader Joe that reminded me of something.
Joe picked up Cogliano who had 4 goals and 15 points in 56 games for a 5th. He had two goals and 3 points in 11 playoff games until injured.
Hollanderelli spent a 4rth rounder on Brassard who had 6 goals and 16 points in 31 games prior to the trade. He played in zero playoff games despite multiple injuries and a Kane suspension.
Discuss.
Yep.
Cogs has wheels. Derek’s fell off a few years ago….
So curious why this post is getting down votes…..
I’m wondering the same thing?
I realize LT has had endless problems with the comments.
I don’t personally feel the upvote/downvote thing is a good idea. It just kind of makes it more like a high school cafeteria or something.
This place used to be so insanely good.
I get the problems with obsessive posters and willful trolls and everything else.
But I think just talking to each other without every fucking thing that is said being subject to vote-off-the-island judgement would be a lot better.
My two cents.
The easiest path forward is for posters to just ignore the “voting totals” – they are utterly meaningless and I remain shocked that adults bring them up daily – it boggles me why they care.
With respect (for what it’s worth, I agree with almost everything you post), I don’t think this is really correct. That “adults bring them up daily” to me means that they aren’t nothing.
I’m not saying this on behalf of myself – I used to be very active in the Oilers internet space but now am more or less a bystander.
I really do think that the vote feature does no obvious good and probably functions as a barrier to new people from posting comments. I think it leads to a net negative of what hardcore posters are left hardening their positions, and makes people we haven’t heard from reluctant to put themselves out there.
I’d like to see it ended.
I could be wrong!
Obsessive Posters and Willful Trolls.
A. Feed them to the lions.
Q. What would the Romans do?
I see what you did there
Probably because its cherry-picked to propagate a narrative.
Compare the Kulak/Chiarot trades for the exact opposite – Chiarot was awful for the Panthers.
I’m genuinely curious why you think that.
Not only do I not troll this website, but I spend hundreds of dollars each year out of my own pocket to maintain and host this website.
I also volunteer my time to maintain this forum.

One round earlier for a player that had MUCH higher production levels.
Not saying that Brassard was the “better target” at the time but you expressly brought up box-cars – Brassard’s were much better at the time of trade.
Trader Joe also picked up Helm ….
and Coliagno; both vets with speed. And a few other good picks up …
Kenny H has had a poor track record at the deadline for the Oilers …
The most significant pickup IMO was Artturi Lehkonen for a second round pick and a prospect.
“The move to Colorado has given him a new lease on his hockey life and he has taken full advantage, scoring six times in the postseason to tie center Nazem Kadri for third-most on the Avalanche behind MacKinnon (11) and forward Gabriel Landeskog (eight).
“It’s certainly been a little bit like a roller coaster,” said Lehkonen, who has 11 points (five assists) in Colorado’s 14-game march to the Final. “The chance to play for the Stanley Cup doesn’t come very often. You’ve got to make the most of it.”

I’d forgotten the ‘prospect’ was 1st round pick Justin Barron who went straight into Montreal’s lineup.
That’s a heave price.
Holland acquires Kulak for a 2nd and retained salary.
Zito acquires Chiarot for a 1st, a 4th and a prospect.
Discuss!
I don’t think it’s fair to frame the issue like this without acknowledging that Woodcroft and Manson had only been on the job for a few weeks at that point. Brassard is the type of player that would have appealed more to Tippett. When Woodcroft came up, he promoted (rightfully so) McLeod, feeding him more and more responsibility. Brassard became an afterthought.
In hindsight, it’s easy to roast Holland for that deal … but many here felt Brassard was a good depth pickup at the time.
The Kulak deal was very low key at the time it was made … many here wondered openly about spending a 2nd round pick for a 3rd pairing D-man. In hindsight, Kulak turned out to be great fit with our team and over-performed expectations. If he can be signed to a reasonable deal (between 2.5 to 3 million for 3 to years), that deal is going to go in to the win ledger for Holland.
Just for the sake of hindsight, I decided to revisit “Trader Joe’s” trade history on CapFriendly … here are some gems that I found:
O’Reilly for Grigerenko, Zadorov, Compher and Jeremy Roy
Shawn Matthias for a 4th round pick … Matthias would play 20 regular season games for the Avs
Eric Gelinas for a 3rd round pick … Gelinas would play 23 regular season games for the Avs over 2 seasons
Brassard for 3rd round pick in 2019 … Brassard would play 20 regular season and 9 playoff games for the Avs, and tally 4 goals and 1 assist
If I were to criticize Holland for anything, it’s that he’s traded away too many picks to plug holes. He’s paid too handsomely for players with name recognition (AA, Green, Kulikov, Keith, Brassard). But he’s held on to his first round picks at least.
The Lucic and Koskinen deals were major millstones when he arrived – if Chia doesn’t bone the the team by signing Koskinen to that albatross deal just as he’s being shown the door, they may have been able to offer Markstrom more money.
The Klefbom injury really set the team back after he arrived – it just can not be over-stated how devastating it is to lose a 1st pairing D-man on a team friendly deal to a career-ending injury.
He’s absolutely crushed it in the UFA market – Smith, Barrie, Ceci, Hyman and Kane.
And people here didn’t believe me when I said Koskinen would be out of the league next season
Take a bow!
Yep.
Very true.
I think we are all a little surprised that he appears to be doing it by choice. He’s not bombing out to the Swiss League, this is his desire.
Of course, this was due to his choice – no doubt he would be offered NHL contracts for next season.
Theres no way you could know this of course. The most logical explanation is he knew the choice was Europe or the AHL.
Given the objectively worse tenders, including worse and older tenders, that get contracts every year, no I don’t “know it” but its pretty much a certainty.
Hmm. Plenty of people agreed with this. I mentioned it a few months back. Lots of people scoffed. Lots of people agreed.
Count me as a believer … in that I never believed Koskinen was an NHL goalie after that 4 goals in 4 shots debacle a season ago. That will go down as the single worst performance by an NHL goalie ever. And that wasn’t a one-off either … he routinely would let in the first goal on the first 1 or 2 shots of the game. He just didn’t know what time the game starts. Perhaps he was just always in a different time zone … Switzerland will be better for him.
I missed the go-ahead goal but Bourgault got an assist on it.
Bourgault ties the game for the 2nd time – some chaos in front, Bourgault finds some soft ice in the slot, takes a pass and back-hands one into a fairly empty net.
Its being reviewed.
Its a good goal – d-man cross-checked the guy in to the goalie.
Kevin Weekes saying an Evander Kane contract with the Oilers will start with a 7 And with another team an 8.
https://twitter.com/zjlaing/status/1534658855233126400?s=20&t=QH5e7M9IDW0aBVOqbVbu6A
Doubt it. Too much baggage on the player to start with an 8. More like 6 from Oil 7 from everyone else
It just takes one desperate GM…and there’s always one.
Yep
https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/sharks/why-evander-kanes-oilers-playoff-success-might-be-good-sharks
Jason Gregor shared this
If this is right and Kane wins arbitration, it sounds like it will be a gong show because Sharks retain rights. If I understand correctly, 3 outcomes:
1) Sharks bring him back?
2) Sharks let him sign elsewhere. What he signs for AAV gets deducted from what the Sharks owe him. I suppose they could trade for rights to negotiate new contract?
3) Sharks trade him, possibly with retained salary
For full disclosure, Weekes said it would start with a “7” for the Oilers and an “8” for other teams.
I don’t imagine he’s even close.
Maybe.
But, there has been some fantastically low numbers bandied about in here. ( not you per se)
My bet is Weekes is closer than most in here.
If he wins arbitration, though, my point is that he will be guaranteed 7 mil/season, no more, no less. The only difference would be where he plays and which team(s) he gets his cheque from. Sharks can protect themselves by trading him to another team (maybe eating some salary in exchange for something in return), or they can let him sign with another team. In the latter scenario, he would make the same total amount, regardless of what the new team offers. So he would make his decision purely on the basis of where he wants to be. And the signing team most certainly will not be paying him 7 a season
QMJHL game on TSN and Bourgault ties the game, driving to the net on the rush, taking a Bourque pass and burying one low far side.
His 11th of the playoffs, for the league goal lead.
Thanks for that…I knew it was on this week but would have missed it entirely
When Bob asked Woody about any thought to reducing Nurse’s minutes further, flipping him with Kulak, etc. Woody did speak about multiple injuries to other players that we don’t know about.
I wonder if Kulak was a bit more then banged up.
“While its been a sprint, its been the time of my life” – Woody on his stint so far – then went on to talk about how appreciative he is.
Woody was also on Oilers Now – he wanted to speak to Leon. He said “ya” when Bob asked about multiple injuries.
“What this guy had to do just to get prepared to play a game and then to perform at the level he did – its the stuff of legends – that’s how hard it was just to get him ready to play those games.
Holland did a follow up with Bob on Oilers Now.
When Bob asked if figuring out the tending was #1 priority, Ken acknowledged “yes” but also threw figuring out the Kane situation in there.
He knows that Skinner is raw and that Mike is a 1B option at best, if he comes back – he’s clearly live to the requirement to the issue.
He’s also very much live to knowing what the chances are of Kane re-signing and, if so, what the general contract terms will be and how that will be part of shaping the entire off-season plan.
Confirmation (from Spec) that the Oilers are on Kuzmenko’s list – his short list of teams he’s flow in to meeting with.
I’m missing something. Kuz isn’t big or fast. Doesn’t have a great shot. Decent defensively over there. This is what I’ve read as I was curious
He was a pretty good scorer but not anything that crazy
Is it because he only costs money? Hoping for a lucky home run? Will he want a top 6 role when it’s likely on good teams he’s bottom 6?
I agree, could not really care about the guy.
I’ve been expressing my “very guarded” position on him – not even a lock to make the team if he’s signed.
Of course, we are talking about a 1 year ELC (the only contract he can sign) so there is zero risk but for a spot on the 50.
Guys that score like he did often are NHL top 6 quality. Not sure about the other stuff.
1 year ELC is hard to not give a test drive
is he gonna be Panarin or Kaprizov? No but hey he may be one of those late bloomer guys that Tampa seems to always find
would it be enough to be Mikheyev?
I don’t get it either. Middling Euro.
He’s not a Middling Euro though. He scored 1.18 points/game in the KHL this season. #2 scorer in the second best league in the world.
For comparison with some guys who came from the KHL and had success in the NHL – age last KHL season, KHL points/game, NHL per 82 rates:
Andrei Kuzmenko (25) 1.18 p/g KHL, NHL ?
/
Alexander Radulov (29) 1.23 p/g KHL, NHL 82 23-35-58
Nikita Gusev (27) 1.32 p/g KHL, NHL 82 14-32-46
Yevgeni Dadanov (27) 1.25 p/g KHL, 82 25-28-53
Alexander Barbanov (25), 0.47 p/g KHL, NHL 82 12-30-42
(had a previous 0.79 p/g KHL season)
Artemi Pazarın (23) 1.15 p/g KHL, NHL 82 30-62-92
Kirill Kaprizov (22) 1.07 p/g KHL, NHL 82 45-51-96
Valeri Nichushkin (22) 0.54 p/g KHL, NHL 82 14-21-35
Ilya Mikheyev (21) 0.73 p/g KHL, NHL 82 21-21-42
These are ordered by age in their last KHL season. Not a complete list, but there’s some real successes there.
Just a reminder/prayer (my lips to Gord’s ears):
@PuckPedia
If Keith were to retire after the 21-22 season: –#BlackHawk would have a $5.5M cap hit in 22-23 & a $2M cap hit 23-24 –#LetsGoOiler would lose his $5.5M actual cap hit in 22-23 & instead have a $3.4M negative cap hit (cap savings), for a swing of $8.9M
Diocletian retired from the Roman emperorship, anything is possible!
Keith would never screw over the Hawks anyway, just nice to dream about
Wouldn’t be screwing them. It’s money that was negotiated in good faith.
Chicago would get hit with cap recapture penalties if Keith retires – $5.5M next year and $2M the year after that
So that’s not nothing
Keith is revered in Chicago, I doubt he retires and tarnishes the legacy he’s built in that city – he’d find someway to LTIR before he’d retire
I think he wants to play next year, but that’s just my opinion
Also a reminder that Keith has given zero indication that he’s even thinking about retirement and his year-end media avail didn’t provide any inkling in that regard.
$9MM of cap space would be great but there doesn’t seem to be any realistic chance of it happening this way – as much as Oiler fans try to “will it”.
— I would assume that going on LTIR has no implications for Chicago? Between Klef and Keith that’s 10$mm.
Yes, that’s correct – no ramifications for Chicago if Keith is on LTIR
Does Keith have a long-term full season injury?
Maybe Holland should put Kassian, Smith, Foegele and Barrie on LTIR too..
hehe….
One GM was quoted (when discussing LTIR)….”embrace it”
In our case, we know that Klef is going to make us an LTIR team next year, sure, add Keith and Smith and why the hell not LoL
because, at least for Keith, it seems he very much wants to play NHL hockey next season…..
I think there’s a very good chance Smith spends the rest of his contract on LTIR. I mean probably I should expect him to sound down in the exits, he has been in the past, IIRC, but he sounded more down and out this time.
Gregor intimated that the potential for retirement was discussed as between Holland and Smith when he signed. I think the contract was structured as is (back-loaded) to give the Oilers the cap relief in case Smith is done playing.
What I found surprising is he didn’t refute the assertion outright (him retiring)
The stock, easy answer would have been “I have a contract, and I have every intention to honor it” and if he changes his mind later, he amends his public statement.
And yes, I agree, I doubt it will be a straight up retirement – finding an injury – that meets an LTIR standard – to a 40 year old goalie with a long injury history won’t require a herculean effort
How does Edm get an additional $3.4 mil? Nvr heard of that
A negative cap recapture bonus given how much less in actual salary the Oilers paid Keith as compared to his cap hit.
Of note: if this ever did come to fruition, which seems HIGHLY UNLIKELY, the league probably would not approve the negative cap recapture bonus for the Oilers.
It’s the NHL’s math
Gary was very upset with some teams/contracts (Luongo,Shea Weber, Keith, among others) and the length of said contracts, that he deemed them eligible for cap circumvention penalties (even after approving said contracts in the first place)
This took place when the 2013 CBA expired, and he implemented term limits on future contracts (8/7 years) and other restrictions (50/50 rule on front loaded contracts) in the CBA going forward
The $3.4M represents (some sort of) calculation of the amount the Hawks circumvented the cap (as does the cap recapture penalties)
You’d have to google how the exact amounts are calculated – we’ve been discussing this issue since 2013 and I simply don’t remember
*edit-what OP said
Koski going to Switzerland, if that hasn’t been reported yet.
God speed. I hope he does well and is happy.
Yup was rumored a few weeks ago
It was reported on ON weeks ago – people here called the report bogus when I said that a goalie who was no longer willing to fight for a job in the NHL, had no business starting a game in the playoffs.
Neither goalie was going to get our team to the cup, but I’m glad they decided to roll with the goalie who continued to battle even when everyone else said he was done. That’s not to say that I have any kind of malice towards Koskinen – but the NHL game just seemed to be either too fast or too much of a grind for Koskinen to handle.
As David Bowie once sang “Under Pressure”
Yep, I remember. It was quite the backlash of a report for some reason.
I had heard of the rumour but hadn’t heard any confirmation. With Bob throwing it out offhand, it sounds pretty solid.
I called it 6 months ago Mikko a star in the Swiss Cheese League. Switzerland is very nice place to raise a family, Mikko say hello to Shania Twain for me.
The Swiss miss fighting Bensons
I didn’t think he’d stay here at his age. Could have fun playing and be a star again instead of backing up here and getting crapped on
Likely make some decent coin too
How many here have been to any Swiss or Italian league games? I have, it is not even close to a US college hockey game quality and experience-wise. It’s a retirement village quality.
Lol. That’s a pretty incisive and descriptive turn of phrase. If that’s anywhere near as bad as it sounds…
I’ve watched the Spengler though. Didn’t seem completely awful. Although that’s the creme.
retirement village quality ? that’s probably why most recent top players (Kubalik, Suter, etc…) are now playing in the NHL…
As usual, Holland’s presser telegraphed a lot of information that many teams would usually hold close to the vest. He loves to talk and sometimes it’s perplexing.
I’d rather he took an Yzerman approach to things and gave the bare minimum. Keep the rest of the league’s GMs in the dark and not put yourself in the corner by revealing all of your intel and possible intentions.
Holland says anything and people complain.
Holland says nothing and those same people complain.
Lawton (paraphrasing):
Every team should go through an internal audit every two to three years, just to make sure operations are where they should be, and up-to-speed with modern practices. I know Katz wants his team to be a modern operation, so wouldn’t surprise me if there’s already some process in place like this.
(emphasis mine)
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.
Agreed, but Lawton is pushing his own business model there.
Hey isn’t that what Johnny Ringo said in Tombstone ?
Doc Holliday: Now I really hate him.
🙂
I’m your huckleberry
Lawton feels like Kane wil be back with the Oilers given the number of quality wingers available in FA, the flat cap, and Kane’s stated list of priorities (Winning, Lifestyle, Money).
I had not expected money to be #3 on his list. Maybe we can keep him, who knows?
I believe it all hinges on the Sharks outcome. If the NHL award a decision where the money works for Kane he would be crazy not to play with Leon and Connor for the next 3 years.
Theres gonna be lots of guys out there without the baggage. Not much cap space to be had for teams that players would like to play for
When/where did Kane state his list of priorities?
To Bob and Bob has referred to it more than once on his show. He did again today in the Lawton segment. I’m not sure that any particular significance should be given to the order though. I’d have to check.
Is that Bob’s thoughts on Kane’s priorities or did he state that Kane told him that?
If the Sharks lose, they retain his rights. Therefore it would have to be a trade for Kane.
Notice the empphasis on off-season work and internal development from HollyWood? Both insisted on how important this is in a cap world. Hopefully Ethan Bear is listening, he needs to claw his way back to being an every day player.
Ethan should be a cautionary tale. Probably no other player outside of superstar status has more demands on their summer time than Ethan does and clearly it is important to manage that time well, even ruthlessly. You can understand his desire to give back, but there were mistakes made.
Jay strikes me as a guy less likely to leave things to chance–or players to their own devices. No one asked the question but I would be curious to know if he has more structured off-season plans than is commonly provided by teams.
I really want to know how in the world you managed to obtain a copy of Ethan Bear’s itinerary?
Every Indigenous player has to live with different assumptions and while it’s not that they are “drinking Kickapoo Juice”, like Jim Neilson (according to his hockey card), there seems to be this overriding cautionary fable that Indigenous players are living charity cases. That they live in a constant world of distractions.
Perhaps the real question we need to be asking is why we make these assumptions, and do we realize that these assumptions are part of the pressure some athletes feel?
Somehow that notion that Indigenous athletes are foolish goes way back to the days of Tom Longboat. He was often criticized for wasting his time because he had this foolish notion of slow and rest days in this training, which was far from the norm of intense training every day.
As it turns out, Longboat was decades ahead of his time: frequent rest and slow, easy running is the cornerstone of elite distance running programs today. Longboat does not get the respect he deserves; there ought to be statues of the man all over the place.
After his first summer with the Oilers he talked about how busy his off-season was. We have heard many other athletes talk about how an increased sked away from their sport has negatively affected their training. I am in no way impugning a group of people linked to Ethan by their ethnicity, although you strangely seem to be taking the comment that way. Every new experience is a learning experience for everyone. That’s my belief. Your mileage may vary.
But you said: “Probably no other player outside of superstar status has more demands on their summer time than Ethan does”. Why did you say that if you were just talking about athletes in general? Curious.
Because he’s a spokesperson and role model (who also runs a summer hockey camp).
The player has talked about how busy his off seasons are, and how much demand of his time there is. And he reportedly came to camp out of shape the year before he was traded.
I got a feeling Kulak is gonna want a Ceci contract, which tells you what a freaking steal that Ceci contract is
If Kulak signs on it won’t be for a Ceci contract but it may mean he turned a Ceci contract from elsewhere.
We knew it was coming – Konovalov on waivers.
I’ve always liked Russian goalies going back to Tretiak. Khabibulin was awesome and especially Bryzgalov who was hilarious and had to be one of the best interviewees ever. Damn I really wanted this guy to make it and be our Shesterkin for the next half-dozen years.
Lots of speculation today that the Bruins are going to go in to full rebuild mode and that David Pastrnak is on the market.
One year left…$6.67 million cap hit.
40 goals and 77 points this season.
LAK?
😁👋👋
Byfield plus
Thats why that Hall signing was so perplexing when a rebuild was a big flashing sign on the horizon
For the lottery win
A lot of this will likely hinge on what Bergeron decides to do.
With Marchand expected to miss the first few months of the season, the Bruins would have a tough time being competitive.
I think McAvoy will.miss time to start the year also. BOS in tough til XMas
Yeah…despite the public posturing, there is a lot of commentary that the Bruins will take a few steps back and re-load.
Firing Cassidy is likely a tell.
x 100000
Pastrnak agent JP Barry on Athletic report: “I spoke with Don and David this morning and we don’t know where this report emanated from. We both have a solid relationship with Don and the plan hasn’t changed one bit. We will sit down in July and begin extension negotiations.”
You’re bad at this.
He likely picked it up from the 32 thoughts podcast.
Bruce Cassidy probably thought he had a solid relationship with Don as well.
I said “no buyouts”, but when I look closely at the numbers and at LT’s logic, I think LT may be right.
The buyout would save approx $2.5m off the cap in 2022-23
And the largest buyout cap hit expense, approx $1.8m would be on the 2023-24 cap which is in the year that Keith’s $5.5m cap hit is no longer on the books.
All of this combined with Ken Holland’s “stated” desire to continue to build through the draft makes a buyout a very real option…in fact “probable” imo
I’ve said in the past he would be a good trade candidate. I think Holland explores that option thoroughly before he goes to buyout mode.
Also, I think they’re pleased with Broberg’s mentorship of Keith this year and could well be looking at using him in the same role with Broberg. They could very easily feel his cap hit is well worth it.
Reaves is 35 and makes 1.75M. Kassian is 31 and makes 3.2M
He has far less skill than Kassian, 0 playoff points, Kass had 4. Kassian’s production using fancies is actually quite strong, he earns a good chunk of his contract with points
Kass can play anywhere in the lineup. Lots of players aren’t that reliable or consistent, it’s not like he’s some anomaly. They also aren’t usually very fast, big and tough and productive
This should be a tradeable player in a 32 team league. Especially after playoffs when many GMs think they need more toughness
The only kicker to me is his salary next season is 3.5M next year and 2.3 after that
There is a lot of ammo to use in making a deal
It would be better to retain a small portion than buyout
Barrie should get a solid return. At that salary with his production history. And that he was good and physical in the biggest showcase there is for hockey
That’s the Oilers following Oilers tradition.
There is a lot of group think/smear campaigning around Jesse Puljujarvi. People seem to be forgetting the positives:
1. As Woodcroft mentioned in his press conference, Jesse set a career high in points this year.
2. Puljujarvi was the only Oiler forward to receive a vote for the Selke trophy. Of note, he finished in a tie with Johnny Gaudreau and Nazem Kadri.
3. He had 14 goals and 22 assists this year playing on a paltry 1.175 million dollar contract. He was also PLUS 22. This is great value.
But ya, trade him for a third, he’s a bust.
I’ve only seen one poster suggesting he’ll be traded for a 3rd, and that appears more as a shot at Holland than anything else.
— when he was humming along playing on top line for that 20-30 games at a PPG pace before getting Covid there were many opining here that he would be a 5 handle and they ought to sign him now before price goes up : for real.
Yup, lots were giving him term at 4, 5, 6M back in the fall.
Key term: before getting covid
Interesting how different people interpret different things differently.
If I were to comment on group think and Puljujarvi I would state that the overwhelming thought is to keep Jesse.
The bottom line is if the coach and the core want him back.
I think it’s a cap decision
He didn’t come back from Covid and injury very well. He has confidence issues
Yama in the end played better. That being said I think Jesse has untapped potential. He is a unique player. He could be a dominant two way player. Like really dominant
Yama will get a bit better but I think at this point he is what he is, which is pretty good. But I worry about his ability to stay healthy. But I also worry about JPs hips, both operated on already
But if you had to choose because both want to be paid now, you have to take Mighty Mouse
Lots of buts in there. D- for composition
Per Rick D:
Kuzmenko has flown to LA and will be meeting teams in his short list.
I presume Oilers are in there but really no idea.
Also was good to hear Holland use the phrase “body slammed by Mikey Anderson”…..
Could you imagine if something similar happened in the NBA or NFL to a marquee player? There would be definite consequences. The NHL by not doing anything favors a Mikey Anderson over a Leon Draisaitl? Unbelievable….and Holland said nothing to the League or the Officials??
Also of note, Holland mentioned he doesn’t think anyone will need surgery but a couple of guys are “getting pictures” and then they’ll know for sure.
Nuge was dealing with a shoulder.
Jesse with a shoulder.
Yamo in concussion protocol.
of course Nuge is dealing with a shoulder lol poor Nugey
Jay Woodcroft is an Analytics aware “modern” Coach.
If Jay Woodcroft wants JP to return, JP will be returned.
SO… If JP does not return (at $1.4m) what does that tell us??
I don’t think people will be happy until there are large public hirings for an expanded analytics department and people go in front of cameras and sing Hosannas on High to analytics. Like many things that have turned strange these past few years, public performance is now required and probably more important than any actual effectiveness.
Clearly he, Holland, and the core don’t want him. Period.
JP was not willing to re-sign for $1.4M?
True.
I wonder how all that negotiation goes?
Do the Oilers tell JP’s Agent up front that they will not pay more than the Qualifying offer?
Do the Oilers set an arbitration number beyond which they will not keep JP?
Do they inform his agent of that number?
If JP’s camp accepts the qualifying offer, does it come with an understanding that JP will not be traded?
Yeah I don’t know.
I suspect it will be settled before arbitration though (ie – traded or a deal agreed to).
Without having watched, it’s possible the:
Is he part of the solution? ”Thats what I got to sort out”.
is based on what he’s willing to sign for.
If I was JP and was being asked to accept a low contract and a middle 6 role, I might want a second look from another organization to see if a change of scenery helps me become the player I hoped I would become at #4 overall. I hope he really likes being an Oiler.
I agree:)
$1.4MM is the required qualifying offer but very likely not going to be his cap hit next season.
With respect to the Oilers only having four selections, I do think, the 29th overall could be moved for a 2nd rounder and another pick.
Something in Holland’s presser made me think that the 2022 29th overall pick could be in play if the “right trade” required it.
Is the 2022 draft considered to be “deep”?
Will 29 return a legit first round type of talent? or not?
With respect to the Oilers only having four selections, there are many trade scenarios where they may have more, or less, picks.

Positives – Relative to his 2018 draft class, Evan Bouchard led all D in P/60 at 5v5 this season:
1.42 Bouchard
1.28 Boqvist
1.12 Hughes
1.10 Dobson
1.07 Dahlin
0.94 Sandin
0.94 Smith
0.75 Samuelsson
0.70 Miller
0.62 Fehervary
0.56 Durzi
0.44 Romanov
#notanNHLd-man
Some say he’s not even an NHL defensemen, those people can simply be mocked and ridiculed for all time.
BUT, the question really, if we are comparing him to this particular group, is how would they have performed in Bouchards exact position? Impossible to answer.
He is good. He is an Oiler. I am happy.
Yep.
GF/Team
EDM 290
CLB 262
VCR 249
NYI 231
BUF 232
Sandin was drafted 29th overall
Ty Smith 17th
Samuelsson 2nd round
Miller 22nd
Fehervary 46th
Durzi 52nd
Romanov 38th
The only players who are remotely comparable are Dahlin, Hughes, Boqvist and Dobson.
While Bouchard outscored them at evens it’s worth noting that a majority of his assists were secondary on a relatively high scoring team.
Sometimes D who rack up secondary points are getting lucky. Other times they are making great outlet passes that spring teammates for odd-man rushes. Good chance Bouch has more of the latter than average.
Evan Bouchard: $863K (plus a bit of performance bonus overage)
Quinn Hughes Cap Hit: $7.85MM
It’s great watching you defend your bad takes on Bouchard by saying that his performance is good because the Oilers are really good and other defenseman on the chart could have performed better if they were on the Oilers.
It’s worth noting you also believed that most of the other teams who the D on that list play for, were better teams than the Oilers.
How are your takes so consistently awful?
Just checked…Evan Bouchard and Quinn Hughes each scored 35 even strength points this season.
Hughes had 17 primary assists and 10 secondary.
At 5v5, where we started (no idea how we got off track there):
Bouchard 1306min
9G 10A1 12A2 31PTS
Hughes 1444min
7G 12A1 8A2 27PTS
’Not an NHL defenseman’ has more goals, more points, and the same number of primary points than ‘elite ones arrive early’ Quinn Hughes. Oh yeah, in 140 fewer minutes played.
Take that you fuckin’ hairball!
His cap hit is also $7MM less…….
And he even kills penalties!
Until his deal is up…when is that? Next year?
His next deal will be commensurate with his value unless Holland does another typical overpay.
Generally speaking, second pair D get paid considerably less than first pair D….likely somewhere in the $4-5 million range.
Yup, one more year.
Here is hoping Holland has the foresight to start discussions this off-season and maybe get him signed before he puts up 65 plus points next season.
Quinn Hughes has played 205 NHL games and scored 165 points
Evan Bouchard has played 102 NHL games and scored 49 points.
Not only did Hughes arrive much earlier he is scoring .80 PPG.
Bouchard is scoring .48 PPG.
One of these is not like the other.
LT has Kulak signed for $2M, how many think that is realistic? Myself, I think it will take at least 3×5 to resign, maybe 3.5×3 based on what he did for Montreal and us.
One can hope that after being on several teams in the last few years that he sees that the grass isn’t necessarily greener on the other side.
He’s a good fit for the team. He can see that he’s part of a winning culture. He’s local and was excited about joining the team.
I’m not saying he’ll take a home town discount but maybe he’ll be realistic about his terms.
From accounts, Kulak has really enjoyed playing in Edmonton and having his friends and family around.
I think he’ll be re-signed. I’m thinking around $3MM if its 3 years but maybe closer to $2.5MM for four years.
OP he’s a third pairing D. He jumped up a bit and was good, but Woody didn’t have him cover off Nurse while the ship was going down
He won’t get a lot more elsewhere than what he was at. He has no upside he’s a vet and 29 next season. Small bump maybe
I like Kulak. Gamer and he can skate. I’d rather go after a physical D whatever side Bro isn’t playing. Barrie for Mayfield Bro plays left ,saves ~ 3M
Woody intimated this afternoon that he was hurt which was a reason his minutes weren’t increased more.
He has clearly shown the ability to move up to the top 4 and play well, at least for short periods of time.
In order to sign for his peak prime years (which are now coming), yes, I think he’ll get a bump on his $1.85MM AAV.
I would also note that he made $2.2MM of real dollars this past season.
Every team with an elite Finish player in their core should be calling Holland he might as well of said. Jesse’s gone.
Just read Jim Parsons excellent summary of the Evander Kane grievance situation. Some thoughts:
Scenario 1: Kane loses the grievance outright. SJ no further cap hit. Goes to highest bidder, tough for the Oilers. Likely walk if other teams offer too much.
Scenario 2: Kane wins the grievance outright. SJ on the hook for full 7m x 3. SJ retains rights to Kane.
SJ keeps Kane? Not likely.
SJ buys out Kane, cap hit is 2/3 of remaining (21m x 2/3 – 14m) over 6 years, or 2.667m/ x 6. Kane is FA, and can effectively double dip. Kane likely goes to highest bidder if offer too sweet for Oilers. Kane probably favors this outcome from a strictly dollar standpoint.
SJ trades Kane. Modified 3 team trade list. If Evander prefers the Oilers, he simply submits a list of the Oilers and two other teams too much in Cap Hell to be viable trading partners. SJ could be enticed if retention asked is less than the buyout pain. Offer say 2M retention on the deal and minor piece going the other way as we have the hammer. Net to EDM 3 yr @ 5M per for Kane. Net to Kane 3 yr @original 7M per. Net to SJ 3 yr @ 2M per hit (6Mtotal) vs buyout hit of 14M spread over 6 years. Evander stays off the market, money not a factor in other teams on trading list for Kane, comes down to hockey/lifestyle preference. I think Edmonton could sell him on this scenario, and SJ would grudgingly accept.
Scenario 3: Oilers sign Kane to an extension prior to the ruling. This is a grey area. If Kane loses, he is held to the Oilers contract, likely at less dollars than the 7M per. (I don’t see the Oilers going for 7M per, too rich for their cap situation). Kane wouldn’t likely do this as it removes his chance to go to market and also to potentially double dip if ends up bought out. Also, it is unclear if the original SJ contract or the Oiler contract would be ruled as in force by the NHL. Not going to happen, in my thinking.
Scenario 4: Kane wins, becomes FA. SJ off the hook for difference between the 7M per year original contract and whatever he signs for in the market. Oilers in tough if bidding war.
Conclusion: I think the play here is simple. Wait out the ruling, but talk with Kane and SJ on trade. Offer Kane best we can afford if he wins or loses and is FA. If Kane wins but SJ retains the player, offer trade with 2M retention, perhaps we can even get them to take Kassian/Barrie as part of a larger package as well (dare to dream).
Thoughts, my friends?
Thanks for the summary. Very insightful.
I just can’t see San Jose being interested in Barrie as they have Karlsson and Burns. Unless of course they offload one of them.
So strange this situation. Impossible to make any moves till a decision is made.
With regards to option 2, and Oilers having the hammer: Hollands skill with the hammer is his weakest skill.
Very true. I don’t think he’s seen the inside of a home depot in years.
I’ll take 4
Kane won’t get more than 7M from anyone, or anyone worth playing for
Kane seems like a guy that likes a nice friendly payback
Tkaturtle said some pretty rude personal things to Kane when they took those coincidentals. Then scored a goal
Struds mentioned later in the series Kane scored and on the ensuing face off Kane was slashing Tkaturtle and Matt didn’t know what to do. And disappeared
What if it’s option 4 and Kane says he’ll sign at league minimum, and the Sharks have to make up the difference? So the team can get more better players. He gets his 7, stays in Edmonton where he’s happy, Kenny has some extra money to waste. SJ gets a nice lost chunk of cap and a one fingered thanks for Kane
That’s some payback
If Jesse goes I hope its to a high value trading partner like Carolina or Columbus. I dont want to trade him but if we do…losing him is one thing, but not getting enough in return is another.
What is the appropriate return?
JP + 3rd round pick for Necas?
I’d go for that
Except there are two third line Cs already
Move him to the wing
That wasn’t exactly fuzzy bunny rabbits from Holland on Puljujärvi. He did say, though, that he was playing through a shoulder injury (so was Nuge). The verbiage made it sound like there is yet another round of disaffect or lack of connect or something to deal with. If that’s it for Jesse, I wish we weren’t in a position of selling low on the asset.
That shoulder injury was sustained in the last game…..
I believe there were other ailments that effected him over the last while.
Woody mentioned his previous injury being something that effected his skating.
I don’t think he was ever 100% after he missed time with injury earlier in the season.
The Theme song from todays Ken Holland Presser:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmgEe30e34Q
Trading Jesse is what a bad team would do.
The important thing is to come out even or win the trade. Do you feel they can do that?
We will disagree on what’s important
So tell me what is important?
Absolutely nothing you post about or try to frame lol
Sorry we can’t all be smart like you lol
Never claiming to be anything, yet I don’t approach this blog with dishonesty. Should try it out.
Lol
lol and I should be taking lessons from you on honesty?
Nice to see you admit it.
Listening to Friedman and Marek and Friedman talked about Jesse a bit and his contract – referenced Gurianov and how he accepted his qualifying offer at $2.9 and then he went on to say that a few people have told him that Jesse has a good arb case and he’s not sure how Jesse’s side or the Oilers would feel about that.
Of note, if Jesse does file for arb, it shields from offer sheets – they can’t happen (and opens up a second buyout window for the Oilers).
Of note, this was before Holland’s presser where he was fairly committal on Jesse’s future with the Oil.
I hope he just accepts his qualifying offer, but if he does file for arbitration, it will be fascinating to see if the arbitrators see the same “analytics” value that LT, Bruce, Woodguy and others see.
I think it’s incredibly unlikely he signs a QO for $1.4M.
And arbitration award would be interesting, and tough to predict. I suspect his boxcars and TOI get his number (on a 1 year deal) higher than folks here have been hoping/expecting.
There are only certain numbers that can be used as evidence in arbitration hearings and I’m presuming that on-ice analytics are not included.
LT on the Radio: paraphrasing “A move to another team might not be the worst thing for Jesse Puljujarvi.”
I remember when Jordan Eberle was dealt for Ryan Strome. They had a perfect third line center, but he was a shadow of himself in Edmonton…..and gave him away for Spooner…..Strome took off in New York…..Spooner…..where is he now?
Generally playing with Lucic and a “not ready” Puljujarvi – that would be a large part of the reason I would posit.
I agree that played a role in it, but I also believe that he didn’t feel valued and wasn’t happy. Didn’t his ice time get considerably reduced compared to the Islanders?
