The Edmonton Oilers could occupy the penthouse suite in the Pacific Division upon return from this road trip. Edmonton won its division (Smythe) in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987, winning Stanley in three of those six seasons. The 1986-87 team was my favourite, the roster was incredible and the suspense (because of the 1986 loss) in the final (against the Philadelphia Flyers) was so palpable I can remember the feeling even today. I woke up the morning of Game 7 dreading what a loss might do, while also firmly believing the Oilers were the better team.
Grant Fuhr would finish with a .917 SP in the final. Ron Hextall had a .903 SP. Hextall won the Conn Smythe, Fuhr won the ring. That summer, all was right with the world. It’s a cherished memory.

Edmonton is in a good spot today, the next three games are winnable and a 4-0-0 road trip could land the team in first place in the division. There’s a sense the Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken (both 5-4-1 in the last 10) are falling, but the Vegas Golden Knights are 3-5-2 in their last 10 and that’s interesting, too. Edmonton is 8-1-1 in the last 10, and lead the division with a +28 goal differential.
END OF THE WHAC-A-MOLE DEADLINES?
Since the 2006 deadline, the Oilers have acquired a mixed bag of talent at the deadline when there was a chance to make the playoffs. This Oilers team is building and some of the moves (specifically Condors recalls) have provided a spark. Edmonton will need to add talent, but it’s becoming difficult to identify the primary area of need. It’s not a wac-a-mole deadline, as the quality in most spots on the roster is strong while being less than abundant.
What to do? Deal for a LHD? That would place Philip Broberg in the pressbox. RHD? There’s simply not much there. Center? You can never have too many, although the Oilers surely are reaching the breaking point. Wingers? If Holland can find someone like Ivan Barbashev that may be the way to go.
The problem is price. Ken Holland’s resume tells us he believes in the draft and the power of value deals. Read Daniel Nugent-Bowman’s excellent interview with the GM and it comes through in loud letters. If you approach the deadline with an idea that value deals and draft picks are extremely valuable, then you have your answer on Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway, hell even Vincent Desharnais. Those three men will occupy spots next season in Edmonton, and replace the value deals represented this season by Evan Bouchard, Stuart Skinner, Ryan McLeod and Klim Kostin.
If I had to guess, the big deadline piece will be a center. I bet Holland likes Ryan O’Reilly and Jonathan Toews, don’t know if either is realistic with the cap constraints. He MIGHT touch base on Patrick Kane, I’d like Chychrun or Barbashev for it’s unlikely. I also like Jake McCabe, but that gets into the Broberg-Holland conversation. The two things I believe Holland will do: Find a forward who can help the second and third lines if the coach loads up the McDavid line; and find some depth on defense.

Hell’s a poppin at the NBA deadline and the Raptors are out there making real trades! We’ll talk also Oilers-Flyers, deadline and more with Darren Dreger, our TSN Insider. Teeing up the hockey, getting ready for the Super Bowl, and the damned NBA flattens everyone with this trade deadline! 10-1260 text, @Lowetide on twitter.
Bill. Stop playing chicken with Chychrun. Just take Kenny’s offer.

when Desharnais was in the box and after Ceci had a pk shift they preferred the lefty Broberg over the righties Bouchard and Barrie
Great to see post surgery Kane scoring
Skinner solid
Interesting on a team with Barrie and Bouchard that it is Kulak who is the 2nd Defenceman over the boards in OT
you gotta love hyman even on what wasnt the GWG (should;ve been?:)
dude is just always focused on the net
hes obviously going to tail off as he ages
but that nose to the line is unteachable he just has it
I grew up being 5-8 y/o watching guerin smyth and weight and i guess that was how i was taught to play hockey lol
get it into the pads, drive to the net, and sink it
and i like hyman for coming from that mindset
people arguing etc about OT/SO etc
seems easy just add a shot clock 24 seconds or so before shot or change of possession
https://twitter.com/flutoshinzawa/status/1623773589429456896?s=46&t=Vi64CCqGJbOzKLUloHTlbg
People are suggesting Jake is getting traded.
Clearly these people have just never had to take a flight out of Edmonton before.
At the end of the day the 3 best and most paid players are playing poorly
Not how you chase Cup. Leo banks 103K US a piece to tie them up. I don’t give a shit what or why
Stop talking about hockey and play hockey the right way and win games like you should
If a poor team is trying hard that should not affect the outcome very often. My kids like arm wrestling you know
I mean, complaining about 1st place 94 point McDavid and 2nd place 76 point Draisaitl in 52 gp while the Oilers are 8-0-2 in their last 10 is certainly 1 way to spend a Thursday evening.
Top teams don’t have excuses
Does anyone have an example of that not being the case?
Correct. Silver linings and glass half fulls are for teams on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Holland needs to send a message.
Do you have any examples of top teams in the NHL that play well every night.
Even the Bruins have lots to bottom 5 teams this season.
The Oilers are at the one-year anniversary of Woodcroft taking over as coach and are 4th in the league in points percentage during that year and made it to the final four in the one playoff opportunity.
Your personal picture of what top teams in the NHL are seems out of touch with reality.
I was thinking the same.
Oilers are also 8-0-2 in their last 10, 2nd behind NJD who are 9-0-1.
NJD has a 7 game winning streak, other teams are 4 wins in a row or less. Oilers are riding a 10 game point streak.
And, the Oilers are getting points even with McDavid and Draisaitl playing below their usual level these last couple of games. I am willing to bet they will bounce back prettty quickly to help keep the points coming.
The 1971 Boston Bruins(cough cough Ken Dryden) say hello.
VGK leading MIN 5-1 in the 3rd but Logan Thompson exits with an injury.
Flames fans are looking in their mirrors and see a no-playoff team with huge issues going forward. This is to their credit.
Hunter1909’s Season inside a season Update:
Tonight’s OTL means Oilers are now 10-3-3 in their 16 out of 30 game schedule.
Something deep inside tells us that they are going to probably split their 2 weekend games.
Do you think Oilers will split their weekend games: press thumbs up
Or Oilers will not split their weekend games: press thumbs down
There’s one word that kept coming to mind during that game…. woof.
They better wake up for the weekend games.
Provorov stood out for me, had more speed than I expected. Purely for his hockey skills, he’d be a nice add to any team serious about making a run this year or next, before he becomes a UFA.
Need to give some credit to Philly. They played well.
I thought the Flyers were awful..The volume of unforced giveaways and turnovers they failed to convert was mind blowing. It’s a true testament to their mediocrity that we managed to get a point.
I thought they played a solid structure game – there was very little clean air through the neutral zone for the Oilers skill players.
8 giveaways a piece though? I thought they played equally poorly. Credit to both goalies for keeping it close. I assume we are seeing some measure of reversion after pre-break high water mark. The problem with stealing games and loser points is it masks what might be a return to bad habits. I see coasting, weak forechecking, sloppy passing, but also stellar Skinner and Kane, reliable Hyman and RNH. Hope everyone’s right about McDrai, probably are right about McD, Drai is a mystery.
We really need McDavid and Draisaitl to shake off the hangovers
Flying back to Edm for a practice only to fly back east doesn’t seem like a smart move.
They were in the Caribbean before the All-Star game. They were on an Eastern clock for over a week. They probably stayed on Eastern Time back in Edmonton.
not an nhl player but an edmonton ex-patriate in halifax
i stay on AST time especially during winter and with securities being my trade
why yes i will take 9 am sunrise
think oilers more just all star hangover than anything do with time zone wise
When I first saw that they were coming back to Edmonton, I questioned if it made sense or was the smart move. When I thought about it though, if they didn’t, they’d be gone from home for over two weeks – I know part of it was a vacation and the work part was at the beach but they do have things like dogs and that does matter I’m sure.
You’re suggesting they don’t have anyone else to look after their dogs for a few days?
I’m suggesting they would like to see their dogs (among other things re: being at home as opposed to gone for over 2 weeks).
I would say it has more to do with Woman. I do remember when I was young crawling over broken glass to see my Girlfriend. Taking a 5 hour flight where you can sleep is Childs play.
McD and Drai need to show up. Bad games from them both last two. Team seems to go as they go.
Oh well, gained a point on Seattle and Calgary and Colorado.
Hope they get their legs (and brains) for the weekend.
I’m ok with only getting a point. We don’t deserve even that. Good on Skinner. He earned us that point.
Can’t expect to only play 15 hard minutes and win a game.
Three questions for next game.
Do we learn from this?
Who starts next game? Stew was outstanding(shootout aside).
Does anyone come out? Ryan? Janmark? Foggy? I’d take out any of those three but Klim’s toughness keeps him in the game.
Quick turnaround – 12:30 ET start in Ottawa
I think I’d start Campbell then Skinner Sunday but we’ll see
I might throw Jesse in assuming he’s still an Oiler
9:30am start in BC – I may have to set my alarm LoL
After that stellar display, I would give Stew the start. Campbell can start the next two after that. Whoever plays best keeps it going.
I love the early weekend games. Lotsa day left afterwards. My wife loves em cuz it’s to early to have an adult beverage. lol
9:30?! I’m barely out of bed at that time most days. Will have to PVR the game the night before.
LoL…that’s what I’m saying about setting my alarm clock
And I’ve got news for you – the Sunday game is 9:30 am as well
I’d put Puljujarvi in for Ryan (or Kostin).
Ryan with the 7th forward on the PK so that shouldn’t be an issue. He’s the only natural RS center but was 3 for 8 on the draw.
I would take out Ryan as well. I like him and he’s a smart player but he does his best work lower in the lineup with less minutes. He shouldn’t be on a line with McDavid. Ever. It might be Jesse’s swan song game so why not give him a whirl with Connor for old time sake.
Too bad they couldn’t pull it out in the SO.
Not a great game from what I saw (about half of it) but I’m not going to get too down on a team that’s now 8-0-2 in their last 10.
Also gained points on Seattle, Calgary, Colorado and probably Minnesota tonight. Likely fall one back of Vegas, but overall they took a half step forward with the point.
Oilers lucky to escape with a loser point tonight.
Horrible game to watch. Flyers are the new California Golden Seals – they make you play down to their gutter level.
That effort is probably good for a 4-0 loss most nights
Agreed. Stew stole us that point. Nobody else came to play. Except maybe in the last 12-14 mins.
If anything, I think they elevated their game playing us. They skated hard, we’re physical and won most board battles. We had no answer except in the last half of the third.
If what the Flyers did matters at all there are problems
The other team doesn’t matter if you want to win. Maybe the Bolts or Bruins should create sweat this year
The Bolts lost the Panthers 7-1 and then lost to the Sharks.
The Bruins have lots to the Coyotes, among others in the bottom 10.
Its disappointing to have two lacklustre efforts coming out of the break but the idea (that you have posted) that, essentially, the team should be on their game for 82 straight and other teams do, doesn’t seem based in any sort of reasonableness.
missed opportunity tonight
Nuge makes that look easy…
I don’t understand why teams shoot first. Go second.
Stealth Nuge
Is it really possible the Flyers are saints and truly played a penality-free game
What a fine bunch of gentlemen
I don’t actually recall anything that should’ve been called, really. I though it was a call when McDavid went down but the review showed he just stumbled.
We didn’t make them work hard enough to take a penalty…
The most obvious miss was Nurse’s helmet being pulled off
Bob was apoplectic on the radio (while I was driving home) about 7 Flyers on the ice at one point.
Geez nurse. Making everything look hard…
nurse showing those soft hands this overtime
le sigh
I don’t often give credit to the goalie against the Oilers, because it’s usually bad shooting rather than the effort of the goaltender.
But tonight Hart is having a hell of a game.
If nothing else, Calgary lost, Colorado will lose while we get a point minimum. Sadly, looks like Vegas is also going to win tonight.
Seattle also lost
Avs being blown out by the TBL (5-0) who had recently lost 7-1 to FLA then lost to SJS.
Flames lose in regulation to Detroit.
SEA down by a goal to Jersey with a minute left.
Vegas with a couple goal lead on Minny but half a game to go.
Vegas gained a point tonight, but they lost their starting goaltender. Not sure how bad the injury is yet. Plus they’ve been on a terrible run prior to tonight’s game since Stone got injured. With Thompson possibly out, it doesn’t look good for Vegas, which is good for Edmonton. Seattle is also on a bad stretch with 2 losses in a row and 4-5-1 in their last 10.
McDavid and Draisaitl won’t be slowed down for long. I expect them to explode with some big games again soon.
I’m surprisingly optimistic after a loss where they got outplayed by a not-good team.
dont tell harper
somehow the oilers are still the worst team in the pacific to him
What a save by Skinner
Well at least one Bettman point thanks to Skinner.
Sure hope Nurse decides to pass this OT lol
Ooh, didn’t see how close that Kane wraparound was until seeing the replay. Damn.
Did you see Kane raise his arms? That was going in. He looked really fast on that play, too.
Yup he looked fast.
Really glad he was able to get healed and back playing so he should be in top form well in advance of the playoffs.
Keep pushing here…the refs want to give the Oilers a PP
That Nuge line has been excellent this period.
I’ve seen them poor for quite a while but, yes, I agree, much better in the 3rd – two or three solid o-zone possession shifts.
Oh yeah, not saying they’ve been playing well generally, that’s part of why I mentioned it.
They do have some real nice skill to them though, at both ends.
Summarizing!
Petrov figured in both NB goals, picking up 1+1 in a 4-2 loss. He was named 3rd star for his efforts.
When is the last time the team formerly known as Broad Street Bullies went through an entire game without committing an infraction?
Ed Snider is crawling out of his grave
Finally some urgency!!! Keep it going!!!
Some form of game management is at work here
Oilers have to get a PP don’t they?
Apparently not….
Im cheering for the Flyers now. This team needs the lesson.
You just want to be ahead of the curve if the oilers lose. The broken hearted fan’s lament.
Lessons don’t require losses.
In the last calendar year, the team has the fourth best points percentage in the league and made the final four in the only playoffs.
They are 8-0-1 (now 8-0-2) in their last number of games.
That’s two sloppy low energy games coming out of a long break – its not good but I’m thinking this is a bit aggressive.
Gross.
Thought they are calling a penalty…almost lost my shot…gotta get another drink…
I think it was Sean McIndoe (but maybe another athletic writer) who once said that with how inconsistent goaltender interference is called, the best predictor is simply was the contact in the blue paint or not?
Ever since then I have using that as my predictor and it seems to be fairly effective for determining which way it will go.
For this one, definitely non-homer Louie’s case about Hart moving into Foegele’s path sounded pretty convincing to me but I assumed with the contact being in the crease it would be called back.
I also think Hart sold it at the end once he realized the puck was behind him.
You should assume ALL calls will go against the Oilers and you’ll seldom be disappointed.
Rightfully called back, sadly. Would be nice for one of those to go our way, but right call nonetheless.
Wrong.
This might get called back
Guy has to try get outta the way, right? Damn. No effort from foggy…we’ll see…
What??
To not hit the goalie.
He was literally in the process of shooting when he bumped into Hart.
I guess he could have aborted the scoring chance so he wouldn’t make contact?
Ya, I think that’s the rule – can’t drive the net and run in to the tender in the crease.
Not saying it should have been a good goal.
Foegele was called out for lack of effort in trying to avoid the contact.
That I don’t agree with.
BOOM!!! Hyman cleans up the garbage!!! Let’s see the challenge…
That’s totally goalie interference – that should come back.
Yeah I dunno if they let that one count.
Maybe Louie wasn’t the only one who over-did it with the cheesesteaks.
edit – LOL! Of course they score 10 seconds after I post that.
